25 BTW, Juneteenth is real. Any day that marks the end of slavery in the US is worth celebrating, particularly by Republicans and conservatives, since we made it happen. However, slavery didn't entirely end until the passage of the 13th Amendment in January 1866. Fun fact: the last state to free its enslaved persons was Joe Biden's Delaware.

The whole 1619 Project/George Floyd/Juneteenth shit is about creating a "foundational mythology" for what leftist Black Nationalists hope will be a new black nation carved out of American territory.

1619 is something akin to the rape of the Sabine women. Juneteenth is black Independence Day and the martyring of St. Floyd of Fentanyl is the start of the revolution. They've even got their own retarded "National anthem" in Lift Every Voice And Sing.

The Nativity led to the Slaughter of the Innocents, so I'm going to say "protecting the innocent" doesn't work. Family reunions take place in many contexts. Christ did not sacrifice Himself at Christmas, he became Incarnate of the Virgin Mary. Easter was when the Paschal Sacrifice took place.

So no, I see nothing relating to Christmas there.

I mean, you could go off of the apocryphal Book of Armaments, where the Blessed Beretta 92 was employed during the time of the Maccabees, but that's totally different.

NBC, Nov 19:

"President-elect Donald Trump is now receiving intelligence briefings after having declined them during his campaign, according to a source with knowledge of the matter and a former U.S. official.

The briefings from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) began shortly after the election, in keeping with a custom launched by President Harry Truman at the end of his tenure, the sources said.

“ODNI is acting consistent with the tradition, in place since 1952, of providing intelligence briefings to the President-elect,” an ODNI spokesperson said.

The office would not comment specifically on whether Trump was actually accepting the offer of the briefings.

One of my Top 10 all time movies. And it’s really just a story about a family getting together at home and trying to have Christmas together.

The best part is watching Peter O’Toole trying to overact and upstage each other constantly. Why it works is that by all accounts, the real life Henry and Eleanore were exactly like that. She tried to kill him more than once and he didn’t divorce her, he just shut her up in a castle.

"closest guy friend", assuming he's not gay, is a man who is trying to have sex with her. Again, assuming he's not being a bitchy gay man, he's just trying to cock-block the guy so that he can continue failing to get out of the friend zone.

181 You never answered the question whether Rudolph , Frosty the Snowman, It's a Wonderful Life are Christmas movies.
Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at December 13, 2024 10:52 PM (tK3Zm)
---
I haven't seen Frosty in (mumbles) years, but Rudolph is explicitly about Christmas, being based on a Christmas song.

What Christmas song is Die Hard built upon?

It's a Wonderful Life is a deep exploration of faith, and - to my recollection, does not feature lots of people being killed in taught action sequences.

Die Hard is a story about a hostage situation that is set during Christmas. It has no Christian themes, no moment where a character chooses to be more Christ-like, or contemplates the miracle of the Incarnation. The Charlie Brown Christmas runs rings around it in that respect.

It's a fun movie, but no one can seriously argue that you can plop kids down in front of it and say: "This will teach you the true meaning of Christmas. Yippie-ky-yay, muthafuckers!"

183 There was a film I saw in theater in my youth back in the early 70's

"Lawman" Burt Lancaster plus a number of well-known western actors. But the thing that caught me was how gory it was. Almost has if Sam Peckinpah had directed it.

Particular is the scene where Lee J. Cobb puts a pistol under his chin and blows his brains out the top of his hat in full reveal.

Don't know why I'm sharing this...must be Friday.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe has strong Christmas vibes not only because Father Christmas shows up, but because of its Christian themes.

I enjoy Gremlins, and I don't particularly mind if people want to call it a Christmas movie. 250 Henry is a role I've wanted to play for a long time. So I know the play well.“.

I just about know it by heart now. A reason it resonates so much is that that the actions of that one nuclear family, that handful of characters, dominate our collective history even now, 900 years later. Henry II established England as a dominant player in European history. Eleanor was one of the most powerful women of all time. Richard exemplified the spirit of the Crusades, and yet his folly led to John , whose misrule led to Magnum Carta and Parliamentary Government. Oh and as a bonus, all of the Robin Hood stories.

So I guess the problem is the definition of a Christmas movie. What is it? If it happens in late December, has holiday music in the background, is it a Christmas movie?

Does the plot or theme have any impact on this, or is setting the decisive point?

Oh, good. I saw this reference several threads back, but too late to add my comment. Now I can.

I was able to sample the Dvorak keyboard on my Radio Shack Model I, using an alternative keyboard driver. I played with it enough to see that, after a while, I probably not only could transit from my QWERTY training, but likely could type faster.

I didn't want to have to change all the keys around, or put Dvoradk stickers on them, so I didn't stick with it.

Now, if I just had a keyboard that had character displays which could be changed in software, I… am probably too many decades more set in my QWERTY ways to try again.

It was a while before Alaska, purchased in 1867, really became part of America. Originally organized as the Department of Alaska, the area was renamed the District of Alaska in 1884 and the Territory of Alaska in 1912, ultimately becoming the modern-day State of Alaska in 1959."

The parallel between Christmas 1944 and trying to get settled after the war is lost on us, but a very real thing. Demobilization hit a lot of career officers hard, such as the general.

So the idea that all the troops should have a reunion to cheer him up on Christmas - the anniversary of their great battle and his relief - fits.

Even Wonderful Life had angels and praying, and people going to church after VE & VJ days, but, no Christ, no cross, no creche to be seen. Hollywood secular. (Must be the movie mogul joos' doing.) 1) Younger Wayne, even though the age difference between him and Dickenson is laughable.

3) The Ricky Nelson- James Caan split is probably the one exception.

It was traditional to take a pagan holiday and Christianizing it. Fir trees and noticing the days getting longer was not part of the original Jewish or early Christian holidays, even though Channukah, about the miracle of a day's worth of holy oil for the temple lasting 8 days could fall around that time like this year.

Its the first time since the move where I have absolutely jack shit to do, and my biggest problem is deciding what guitar to play...loud.

I'm just reflecting on the "meaning of it all". If anyone didn't see earlier, my cousin, the retired meteorologist who used to run the NWS station at GSP (Greenville-Spartanburg airport) here died suddenly this morning.

He just keeled over a chair in his den this morning, less than an hour after we texted earlier. What were we talking about, my weather station data for the morning.

I mean, boom, he's gone. He was just 75.

So... I started posting on every post, that this was clearly a Paid for Ad campaign... and woke....

Suddenly after 3 days... I am suddenly seeing NO Witcher posts at all...

What a Co ink E Dink!

He had lost his wife a little over a year ago (she died a month before my father). She had some long term health problems, and went down slowly over the past couple of years.

That reminded there is a significant actuarial risk of death with losing a spouse that lasts around a year+, then tapers off. And this is all-causes, including accidental death (a grieving person can be distracted and not paying attention as normal).

I'm not sure of the autopsy rules in this case, but I'd sure like to know exactly what cause of death was. Sudden cardiac thing is what it looks like.

Saw a video from Syria. There was a bombed out building; basically some floors but few walls. People had their hands tied behind their backs, no blindfold, and were told to jump off a floor into a pit with other bodies, maybe a story or two below. As they jumped, they were shot in the air in the back. Sometimes further shots had to be done once they landed in the pit. Muzzies are tortuously creative killers.
