Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - December 18, 2024 [TRex]

[Photo: Christmas Market in Braunschweig, Germany]

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT.

***

He did the thing: Man finds himself in sticky situation after licking frozen display at outdoor mall

One punter thought he would cool down by sticking his tongue on the sculpture, on what turned out to be a rather warm and humid day in the city.

But the moment turned out to be slightly embarrassing when the mans tongue became stuck to the frozen exhibition in the middle of a bustling mall.

The man was unable to remove his tongue from the frozen billboard despite efforts from a security guard who tried pouring water over the mans tongue to melt the ice.

Everything in Australia can kill you. Even the ice is a threat.

TRex likes made scientist type projects and this is one of them:

***

Yum! Goodies at the Nurnberg Christkindlesmarkt:

***

While the ONT makes no official restaurant endorsements (at least not until a restaurant shows up at the ONT offices with wheelbarrows of cash), Dave Thomas brings his own brand of Christmas cheer:

***

The ONT is looking out for you: Is the five-second rule true? Dont push your luck.

By analyzing bacterial transfer at less than a second, 5, 30, and 300 seconds, they found that longer contact times resulted in more transfer but some transfer took place instantaneously, after less than 1 second, thus debunking the five-second rule once and for all.

***

Drones? Did someone say drones?

Working the system:

Police in Vienna, Austria, are currently investigating the bizarre case of a couple who got married and then divorced 12 times over a period of 43 years in order to take advantage of a legal loophole that allowed them to receive substantial amounts of money. The elderly couple is suspected of having arranged every divorce strictly on paper so the wife could receive the 27,000 euro ($28,300) severance pay she was awarded after her first husbands death in 1981. They took advantage of a loophole in Austrian legislation that allowed widows to retain the severance pay as long as she was not married. Every two and a half years, she was to receive 2.5 times her annual widows pension, so every three years or so she and her second husband would divorce so she could receive the money, and then they would remarry.

Is Doof living a double life in Idaho?

The Idaho man who holds the most concurrent Guinness World Records added another title to his name by donning a blindfold and performing 41 pickleball serves in one minute.

David "Record Breaker" Rush said his journey toward taking the title for the most blindfolded pickleball serves in one minute began when he came across a video of the previous record, which stood at 23 serves.

This is not the first restaurant to feature a water menu, but you will never see TRex paying $95 to drink water from a Canadian iceburg. A fool and his money... something... something... something. Maybe the food thread can make more sense of this:

Maintaining three Michelin stars at the opulent Inn at Little Washington in rural Virginia is a never ending feat for its chef and sole proprietor Patrick OConnell. Always one to think outside the box, OConnell just introduced an extravagant water menu that gives diners (and nondrinkers) an ultra rare taste of underground glaciers from around the world. A bottled Canadian iceberg is the priciest pour ($95). How the Inn at Little Washington Retains Its Top Michelin-Starred Status

26 As I wrote the other day when I linked to it, it's not Christmas until you hear the Dropkick Murphys.

Was in a store today and heard that "All I Want for Christmas" song. If that's the one and only time I hear it, I'll count that as okay.

Not really any worse than Porky Presley singing "blue blue blue blue Christmas w w w without you..."

MiladyJo said she didn't mind the song so much, because the first time she heard it, it was this version:

34 Hey, TRex, back in about 1979, at Edwards AFB, I got to see a film of the first time they fired the 30 cal gun on the A-10. The bird had no deflectors above the muzzle, the escaping gases flowed upward over the fuselage, killed both engines which could not be restarted and crashed the aircraft. The pilot was pretty severely injured in the ejection.

57 In the news you can use department: do not use your microwave oven to warm up dead printer cartridges in an effort to revive them. I put the two cartridges in a Pyrex dish, popped them in the nuker, and set it for ten seconds. Within three seconds, they had emitted smoke and burst into flame. Hit "cancel", and put the dish in the sink, and ran water on it. To add insult to injury, the Pyrex dish went "tink", and the bottom fell out of it. Lots of printer ink went down the drain, though.

118 AOP the only (non-agricole) rum I could grab on the island in a short window was Flor de Cana 12-year. I say "only" not because it's bad but because the selection was poor in the only store open near the marina (French overseas territories love them some innumerable holidays). I was looking for a sipper. It was fine. Even lured a few people on the boat into the sipping rum world.

End of trip, same marina but not a holiday, turns out there was an incredible wine/booze store two doors down. Ended up picking up an agricole not sold in the US that I plan to sip - quite surprising because it's a blanc. But now I see what people are talking about with the vegetal and cane flavors that come through in agricoles.

Back in the early 80s, I recommended a ribbon re-inker to our accountant. I used mine a lot and save a few $.

The accountant lost money on it, though, when he dumped a bottle of ink on an expensive oriental carpet. Who could have predicted such a thing! Like AOP, he was excellent in his main field, but outside of that...😛

Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt whisky, one of a small number of whiskies in this style.[1] As of 2023, Monkey Shoulder is the world's third best-selling brand of Scotch whisky, trailing Johnnie Walker and The Macallan."

172 Here is an idea: re-invent the thermal printer. Rolls of specially-treated paper, with the glossy coating containing micro-encapsulated ink in black and three colors. The capsules would burst, and emit a dot of ink when heated and hit by a shot of UV at the precise right wavelength. So your printhead contains a heater and four tuned diode lasers.

The paper might be expensive, but you use only what you use, near zero wastage. And the printer itself has no consumables.

175 "but some transfer took place instantaneously"

_____________________________________

I got independent testimony from 3 non-interested third party witnesses. By a vote of 2 to 1, they have agreed in consensus that the above phrase does not apply in each and every dropped food episode. The "some" refers to incidences themselves, and thus, there are events in which no bacterial transfer took place.

With that in mind, the "5 second rule" remains in effect. Who doesn't enjoy a good game of chance?

Israeli/Russian deconfliction* was always very good in Syria, it was an ongoing routine operation.

Actually it is a mistranslation of the sarcastic French phrase "aiguë comme un bâton" or "sharp as a stick" relating to being poked in the eye is better with a dull stick than a sharp one.

255 Another interesting interview (on an arab channel) with Sebastian Gorka, incoming director of counterterrorism. He was asked about Syria, and pretty much said that there was never ever an instance since the founding of jihadi muslem brotherhood way back 100 years ago, when a jihadi, after spending a good portion of his life as a jihadi, murdering and killing infidels, all of a sudden turns and becomes a good guy, drops his beliefs. Never. Syria...

If you know Kim's writings, than you'll know me from his references to "The Layabout Sailor". Some mentions of accuracy and deadly shootingness, thus.

302 Six years ago today, my oldest friend's college-age son, youngest of their four boys, committed suicide. I always have contact with my friend on this day. Today he sent me a picture he found on Fazebook or somewhere that seems to be our feminized son, from whom we've been estranged (as well as son's two children) for over three years. Painful to look at, especially for his mother, my beloved MiladyJo. As my mom once said to my friends, talking about my older brother's estrangement from her, "I've learned there's more than one way to lose a child." Or a grandchild, I'd add.

Not sure that paragraph was clear or convoluted, but I'm not going back over it. Instead, I pray Jesus rebukes the diabolical influence in our world and his Spirit of Truth bring repentance and new unity in all difficult family relationships. 💖

On that less-than-merry Christmastime complaint, I will retire for the night. God bless us every one.

317 It was reported/leaked a few days ago that the IDF had finalized a plan for bringing holiday greetings to Yemen in return for their kindnesses. Probably a pretty comprehensive approach. This might be phase one. Not sure if the Houthis even have much air defense to take out, which is always phase one.

Two days ago, for the first time, the US did something semi-useful and hit some command/control target in the defense HQ.

I've been assuming this (failure to deal with the Houthis) is one of the outrageously egregious and stupid failings that Trump might quickly address in a month.

I really hope you see this, so it can maybe.... help.

I'm a fucking genius. I understand a LOT of what goes on, including in the human mind.... yet...

I missed that my daughter was suicidal. I saw her two weeks before she with... serious planning (where she wrote out who got what, and took pictures....).. decided that her life was not worth living. She even rented a hotel room so no one who she knew, would find her body.

To say I've struggled with this... would be a yuge understatement... I will never understand how this happened, nor forgive myself ... as maybe... just fucking maybe... I could have done something different.

I normally don't talk about this... but... the fact is that once someone decides to go? There is not a damn thing you can do about it if they are serious.

Misery upon misery. What I discovered not long after is that regardless of circumstance or the behavior of others, Jesus is still born on Christmas, He still comes for you and you alone, with you as an individual on His mind and in his heart. Holidays bring all kinds of emotional baggage. Follow the star anyway.

I know that feeling. Once the grandparents, aunts and uncles, and parents started to go everything changed. The big holiday gatherings just faded away. Christmas eve diner at my grandmother's was epic. She could make an old boot taste good. 25-30 people, enough food to feed an army, dozens of choices, and it all came out hot. Thanksgiving at my aunts was the same. It all went away. After my mother died the last of christmas went with her. It was her favorite holiday. Even non family related parties became less and less. I did find a solution though, and thats to start my own gatherings. Its the main reason I moved to a bigger house. Nobody does it anymore? Well fuck it, I'll do it. Make my own party, I always did. I have a few friends with no family left, or ones that are widows or widowers. Last week was the first one here. It was epic. House was decorated, and full of people actually having fun for a change. Like it used to be.

I think it is a growing phenomenon. Too many therapists out there affirming people's trauma. Your problems are not your own they are the fault of your parents you should remove these toxic people from your life.

And, yes, I have an estranged son. Over 5 years now. Not entirely over the anger and bitterness. I often wish for bad things to befall the therapist. That's not the right way to be, I know.

Well thats the thing. I could never do that in the old house. The house probably had enough room but would have been a little tight, and parking was a problem. You couldn't park on the street. The last 5 years in that house started to bother me. I did a lot of work in that house too, it was nice, and would be decorated to the hilt, but the christmas magic just wasn't there. Meanwhile if I asked around to see what my freinds were doing around the holidays it would always be the same answer. Nothing, I don't know, nothing to do, etc. I started wishing for a bigger house, I had dreams of a bigger house, but there was no way I was going to afford it. I would have needed a mortgage twice the size of the one that took 30 years to pay off. Then the miracle happened. (continued)

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at December 19, 2024 02:32 AM (VwHCD)

357 The miracle was this house. 5 miles up the road in a more expensive town, twice the sq ft, 100ft wide driveway for serious parking, and on the street if needed, and 4X the property just dropped in my lap for 18K more than I sold my old house for. Somebody up there answered my prayers. I always said if I had the right house I could have a Christmas party for all my friends that never had anything to do. It took 2 years to redo it, and literally almost killed me, but it gave me my second miracle. Seeing everybody having fun last weekend including a friend who has a wife in the hospital really made it all worth it. I finally understood I had a Christmas miracle. I was able to bring Christmas to those who needed it, and it was the first time in a long time that I felt the magic. Giving them Christmas brought it back to me.

Well its not even the house, it was just a way to bring christmas to others. That was just my way of doing it, but there are many other ways. I guess the moral of the story was there seems to be something about that whole gift of giving thing. In my case it wasn't the missing family as much as the missing celebration. I feel better about the holidays than I have in a long time. Not that I was ever sad, I still had fun, but the holidays just lost something.

Christmas markets are one of the few things I enjoy when I'm over here. Beer, data protection, and the occasional clear/speed-unlimited autobahn stretches pretty much completes the list.

366 Well! Morning, insomaniacals! 'Tis Thor's Day, and we are almost done with the last work week before Weihnachtsabend (Christmas Eve). Then I remember all those case endings and gigantic, throat-choking portmanteau words, and I'm glad for Spanish again.
