For some reason the father reminds me of Bluto in the Popeye cartoons. Mom bears no resemblance, however, to Olive Oyl.
This is nicely done, from the expression on New Dad's face to the bowl of gruel at the mother's bedside and Dad's leather case on the floor. It looks oversized, as if it holds specialized tools that are longer than could be contained in a regular dispatch case. I suggest, too, that the child is a boy. "Ne" (your mind can provide the accent over the "e") is the male construction for the past tense of "to be born" in French. "Nee" is the feminine form, once seen in the full names of married women, preceding their maiden name. "Lucille Gill, nee [born] Dalou," for example.
Or it might just be a generic use of the male form for either a boy or a girl. Qui sait? Garcon! Another Cointreau, s'il vous plait! Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 17, 2024 09:42 AM (J2vNu) Posted by: nurse ratched, garbage at December 17, 2024 09:42 AM (mT+6a) 62

A lovely scene, simple but poignant. The purity of the white cloth contrasts with the darker, rougher weave of the husband's clothing. Gill really captures the textures in the wood, the man's leather apron and the cloth. The painting captures the feel of the nativity: rustic surroundings and no opulence but the healthy baby is the center of the scene and their attention.

From some subversive French web site: This painting follows a personal tragedy of the painter who lost his own child aged six months in 1880. The artist was able to draw inspiration from his own face for the figure of the worker.
From another subversive French web site: [Gills activities included] Chansonnier, singer-songwriter, cartoonist, poet, caricaturist, painter, communard. Geesh, the guy in 1960s hippy mash up terms was Robert Crumb, Frank Zappa, Abbie Hoffman and Charles Bukowski all in one. He also was locked up in a mental institution about the time he made today's painting. His body was found in a shed in 1885 in the Charenton area of Paris. Right on. Another classic crazy 19th century French artist. Verdict: Double Plus Good Painting Verdict: His cartoons were better. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram at December 17, 2024 10:08 AM (e+6P0) 190

My first husband had beautiful chocolate brown hair with one tiny blond spot at the back on the right hand side. Our son has the reddish blond of my family with one tiny brown spot on the back, right hand side.
Hubbymayhem and the girl spawn both have black hair. Well, Hubbymayhem it used to be black. Now it's mostly silver when he doesn't shave. He shaves his head regularly and looks ten years younger. He turned 60 on Saturday. My hair? Very dark blond, very light brown, and throw in some lighter reddish blond.. Oh and don't forget the grey! Biden Commutes Sentence of Billionaire Hamas Leader’s Terrorist Brother | Nick R. Hamilton, Slay News Lame-duck President Joe Biden has commuted the prison sentence of Islamic terrorist Mufid Abdulqader. Abdulqader is the half-brother of Khaled Mashaal, the billionaire Hamas leader, Breitbart reported. He was convicted of funneling money to the terrorist organization. Abdulqader’s clemency came among a slew of others from Biden this week. With the stroke of a pen, Biden issued 39 pardons and commuted the sentences of 1,500 convicts. Among those released from prison are drug traffickers and cartel leaders. Abdulqader was convicted in 2008 along with four others of using an American Muslim charity, Holy Land Foundation, to fund the terror group with its donations. Also named in that case was the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Notably, CAIR had a hand in softening the Biden-Harris administration’s stance on anti-Semitism. Some believe Abdulqader’s was about more than mercy. The release of Abdulqader comes as hostage negotiations continue following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. What are the odds? Posted by: blaster at December 17, 2024 *** Not too bad. The birthday paradox, also known as the birthday problem, states that in a random group of 23 people, there is about a 50 percent chance that two people have the same birthday. In a larger group like the audience in a nightclub or theatre, the chance goes up quickly. And we have more than 23 people here. (Right?) in a random group of 23 people, there is about a 50 percent chance that two people have the same birthday.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius Wolfus, why 23 people? That's a weird number. Posted by: Bulg It's easier to calculate the other probability, that everyone in a group has a different birthday. First, think of it with dice. If you roll one die, it can be any number 1-6. A second die roll will NOT match 5/6 of the time. A third die roll will not match either of those 4/6 of the time. A fourth die roll will not match any of the previous three 3/6 of the time. So the chance of rolling 4 different numbers on 4 dice is (5/6)x(4/6)x(3/6)=0.278=27.8%. The chance of NOT rolling 4 different numbers on 4 dice is one minus that, so 1-0.278=0.722=72.2% Birthdays work the same way, with 365-sided dice (ignoring leap year). For two people, not sharing a birthday happens 364/365 of the time . For three people, it's (364/365)x(363/365). etc. And the chance of two people sharing a birthday is one minus that number. That number gets below 0.5 (50%) when you get to 23 people, (364/365)x(363/365)x(...)x(343/365) = 0.492. 1-0.492=0.508. A 50.8% chance two people in 23 share a birthday. I read somewhere at somepoint that a long time ago it was felt that baby girls often look like their Dada's. To prove parentage...especially to fathers wanting boys, and not be rejected.
For me, firstborn and all female, there was no doubt at all who my father was. I look much more like him, as do others born after me and through my Daddy DNA. It is apparently strong. I see it in photos of others, this same deal. Sons look like mothers, girls look like fathers. My brothers look more like my mother. Of course there are many girls who look like their mothers. But in this painting you can see that he's inspecting the child for his own imprint. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at December 17, 2024 12:13 PM (gi+MR) 449
