34 From the MET

This painting is a pendant to Weir’s earlier The Gun Foundry (1864–66; Putnam County Historical Society), which depicts the interior of the West Point Iron and Cannon Foundry in Cold Spring, New York. That foundry produced more of the Union Army’s heavy artillery and Parrott guns during the Civil War than any other. Forging the Shaft, painted ten years later, represents the same foundry’s dramatic fabrication of a propeller shaft for an ocean liner.

Just looking at this, I can feel the heat in that space and hear the roar of the furnace. I'm guessing that actually being in this place would be nearly unbearable.

86 This is one powerful painting. The scene itself, forging the propeller shaft for a ship, is an unusual subject. The darkness relieved mostly from the furnace and glowing metal sets a mood of the effort needed for the metal work. The detail of the support structures is solid and massive although mostly in shadow. The relatively small figures ande their placement in the lower part of the painting emphasize the strength required to manufacture such large pieces and the cavernous facility needed to house them. The colors, mostly dark, are not dull or muddied but almost vibrant within the brown spectrum.

Weir did at least one other foundry scene similar in power. Oddly perhaps, his still lifes and landscapes are delicate and light. Interesting artist I want to learn more about.

119 Ok, here goes....We're undergoing an audit by the FAA and getting ready to stroke the airworthiness certificate for a modified heavy jet (a BIG heavy jet, not some company cruiser). We have to generate the associated limitations for said big heavy jet and the MIDO has to bless them before we issue the certificate.

One of the limitations MUST be you cannot use the aircraft for banner towing.

Seriously.

House data = "any electronic mail or other electronic or data communication"

They're also applying this section to any pending matters.

Basically if somebody was trying to subpoena emails of a member of congress because of a potential crime or something, this would allow them to quash such a subpoena.

It's only been people like Paul with a small but dedicated base making hay of this. Elon Musk trumpeting how fucked the "budgeting" process is could be helpful.

I swear, returning to 2007 spending wouldn't be cutting the federal government to the bone. No one outside of the federal government would feel anything. And it seems like it's just kind of generally accepted wisdom that we could probably do it.

It's just that those in power...don't want to do it. And the people out of power simply don't prioritize it as a voting issue, especially in primaries.

Good to see Republican leaders have learned the right lesson from Trump’s massive win (which also dragged House and Senate Republicans across the finish line). That lesson, apparently, being "voters love supporting the Establishment and business as usual, and don't want anyone agitating for change or disrupting the status quo". Yup...well read.

294 Fun Fact ... this is, kind of, how you cast a billet. Steel or Aluminum. Except for one really key point.

You cast them vertically. Because the way the artist drew it - and granted, he doesn't know shit - flies in the face of basic physics. Firstly, gravity.

That's how you create a really, really warped shaft. It'll bow - it must bow - as drawn. And worse, it'll bow every time you move that chain. Which is even worse.

I've worked on the machines that cast billets. Its a "drop floor" - if you can conceptualize that. The molten material flows through a fixed set of rings - for lack of a better term - while a controlled drop of the floor the material hits moves away from the rings. The material really is plasticized for a bit - it cools while it forms.

No. Nope. She texted, and had phone calls and a private conference with a witness. A witness she knew was represented by counsel. And who asked her if she should notify her lawyer or not. Cheney said not. That shit would get any lawyer anywhere disciplined, potentially disbarred and potentially charged with criminal witness tampering. It's literally insane behavior for an attorney or judge to do this.
