30 Unitl I zoomed in, my first thought of the portrait was, "Ypung Elizabeth Taylor." On closer inspection, maybe not, though she has that same coloring. That Cupid's-bow mouth makes me think of some actress, but not a name.

Anyway, this painting certainly delivers an emotional effect. The watered silk of her dress, the texture of the red pillows, the highlights of her dark hair, the smoothness of her face and arms . . . all very nice.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 16, 2024 09:34 AM (J2vNu)

31 I like how color and pattern are used here. They contrast but not in a bad way. They are different enough to be visually interesting but still unified. There's also a unity in forms too. The shape of the couch is matched by the woman's pose, for example. This is a flattering portrait that is interesting to look at and full of personality.

Posted by: Kris at December 16, 2024 09:34 AM (EwaUh)

32 The mademoiselle's wry grin suggests that couch ain't just for fainting.

48 It was, in fact, the large bright red pillow on which Countess de Lancey is resting in the picture that created the controversy. This work is all about fabric and colour: white satin, green drapes, a scarlet cushion and crimson silk which shocked viewers at the time. Carolus-Duran would have done better to “refrain” from “setting off fireworks”, remarked the critic of the Salon in 1877. The model’s white dress likewise gave rise to comments such as that it was “blotched with shadows”, the “folds are artificial" and the "colour is dirty". The Salon’s critics were unanimous in their disparagement of the painting. Nevertheless, this extravagance of colour and luxury corresponded perfectly to the model.

Thre's a playfulness to her expression that prevents me from saying, "This is what Steinbeck had in mind when he described Catherine/Cathy/Kate the psychopath and later successful madam in East of Eden." Kate's cathouse, we were told, catered to fetishes and kinks (though Steinbeck doesn't use those words). It was not the cathouse you went to when you wanted to laugh.

95 Well, if he was trying to get across the idea of a hot to trot saucy wench, he succeeded. The woman's pose, matched by the flow of the chaise, makes the painting. Her direct stare at the viewer certainly catches their attention. After that, the vibrant colors and details of her dress start to come out. The way he blends the skin tones on her face, hands and breasts, like delicate porcelain adds to the effect of a woman of leisure who might be up for adventure.

A stunning and effective portrait. I do wonder what the woman will think of it in her old age.

It's was some starlet, Jamie Lee Curtis IIRC was asked why she finally went topless in "Trading Places"(?),

her answer was along the lines of- "I wanted to show off in my prime, when everyone wants to see me. Not go nude later on when nobody cares."

Which I thought was a pretty sensible answer for a starlet to have as a 5-10 year career is about the max for most.

152 Alice De Lancey 1849–1913, American
Occupation: Courtesan; art collector

Alice de Lancey (Julia Tahl) was the owner of the French painting 'Washerwomen on the Banks of the River Touques' or 'Le Pont De Deauville – Laveuses', in Glasgow Museums.

One of the great Parisienne courtesans of the Belle Époque, the American-born Julia Tahl changed her name on arrival in Europe to the more alluring Alice de Lancey.

From a wealthy Baltimore merchant family with German roots, she travelled to Europe in the early 1870s to complete her education. Achieving notoriety as an accomplished seductress, she threw herself with abandon into a wild society life, becoming, within a short period of time, one of the most notorious 'horizontales' of her time.

Amongst her many patrons was Baron Antoine D'Ezpeleta, whose companion portrait, by Carolus-Duran, Alice bequeathed in her will to the Petit Palais. Both portraits are still on display.

154 Acquiring part of the Louveciennes Estate, formerly owned by Madame du Barry, the mistress of Louis XV, she furnished it with a costly collection of works of art. With an unabashed love of luxury and easy living, Alice de Lancey then embarked on a scandalous affair with Count Nissim de Camondo (1830–89), an enormously rich Jewish financier, whose family owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire and who had established themselves in Paris in 1869.

Edmond de Goncourt scathingly drew the historic parallel between Alice and her predecessor Madame du Barry, by stating: 'The ironic interior of Louveciennes, once home to Madame du Barry and now lived in by Madame de Lancey, and where Louis XV is replaced by the banker, Camondo'.

The painting she owned. now held by the Glasgow Museum:

199 Democrats have got to get nasty. Trump rose to his political position via lies and intimidation, backed by a massive propaganda machine that turns out falsehoods and conspiracy theories faster than they can be debunked.

Civility in politics is no longer a viable course of action.

It is not a symmetrical situation. Can you imagine if a dem took classified docs? They would be in Guantanamo as we speak.

Playing under the Marquis of Queensbury rules won't work with the current gaggle of Nazipublicans. The only "reaching across the aisle" I want to see now is with a 2x4.

Democrats are still in love with the high road and the pursuit of purity and sainthood while millions struggle to survive

Apparently, democracy's Catch 22 is that you can't do anything undemocratic to save your democracy. Our only hope is if Biden takes his SCOTUS pre-approved immunity out for a spin.

In part, "Charles Auguste Émile Durand, known as Carolus-Duran, was a French painter and art instructor. He is noted for his stylish depictions of members of high society in Third Republic France."

Nice new week opener. Thanks.

I just received my reorder of Bimectin, the same stuff, from Valley Vet Supply. Once this crisis is over, you can order some of the horse paste. $8.99 per tube, and each tube is enough to dose a horse, so the human dose by weight is pretty small. Each tube lasts a while.

Elites versus the common masses. Society elites could carry on their decadent ways as long as they kept them on the down low.

But Catholicism and piety were often the ways of the poorer classes despite the French Revolutionaries attempts to destroy the Church.

A bifurcated society resulted from the French Revolution and this meant an uneasy and turbulent period of French politics and society from the Revolution until the rise of Charles DeGaulle as President.

From reports that I have seen, Nanzi and the United Health CEO were engaged in irregular stock transactions resulting in both appearing to gain from private knowledge. Think the CEO was being questioned as being involved in insider trading. He dumped about $15 million in stock just before a federal antitrust investigation of UHC was announced. Nancy bought $14 million in options (risky) on a tech firm shortly to be used by UHC to combat its databreach from the Black Cat. She made 31 million bucks pre tax from it.

I'll tell you exactly why she hasn't been elected, and it has absolutely nothing to do with rubbing the general electorate the wrong way. R votes in the Phoenix area vanish, and aren't counted because the McCain RINOs would rather have a Democrat win than a conservative.
