When we had the Best Cat Ever euthanized at home, the vet pointed out as she was doing the job, the other cats were arrayed around him, facing outward.

She said they were guarding him. Which is exactly what it looked like. Calm, alert, purposeful.

65 Thanks for including the Landseer. I love his animal paintings and the backdrops, landscape or not. The colors he uses and the details of the poverty of the shepherd (rough wood textures and worn textiles and the simple coffin) form such a poignant veil that enhances the sadness of the scene. The realistic image and pose of the dog in the circumstance tears the viewer's heart out. It is haunting.

70 Morning, Art Folken,

Yes, depressing, but also encouraging -- that an animal would actually miss you. Dogs have been known to do this. Not sure about cats.

Linda swears that my big red tabby Arizona went off his feed and literally got sick when I left him with her for a month during my move to CO. He liked her okay, but there was Linda's cat (he hated other felines), the new surroundings, and, she keeps saying, "He missed you."

She also said that when she lived with us in '98-'99 in Denver, every afternoon about 4 pm Arizona would walk over near the door and sit there waiting. He knew what time I got home. That I might believe.

Li'l Bit, the dilute calico kitten I brought home from college, quickly made friends with incumbent red male tabby Rusty, and they sat together and played together. When he died about four years later, after I'd left home, Mom said Li'l Bit trotted all over the apartment for most of the day, calling and apparently looking all over for Rusty. Clearly she missed him.

She certainly missed Mom after she passed. Li'l Bit went into shock and hid from me. Took her three weeks to come out from under the bed and sit with me at last.

114 Story on the local news today about a homeowner in an affluent area bitching because some thieves cut down and stole her 7 foot fir tree that was decorated on her front lawn.

Two things:

1. It pisses me off that there are stupid animals out there that would do such a destructive, selfish, and ultimately transitory, short term act.

2. I am filled with a bit of schadenfreude, because this Karen appeared to be an AWFL who probably voted Biden, and I am sort of glad because this may wake her up.

So cognitive dissonance, a little.

173 158, Texas A&M has always been a conservative school. University of Texas has always been a lefty school in a really weird lefty town in the middle of Texas.

I do think Texas A&M is not as conservative as it used to be, because in many ways every institution in this country has moved left over the years. If we are going to start bashing Texas A&M, it is kind of like bashing Trump for not being as Trumpy as he could be versus everyone else. It is still a conservative school and being a state school that is an extremely difficult thing to do.

For sure, it is not like it used to be even back in the 90s. In the 90s Texas A&M wasn’t conservative. It was right wing and you throw in the boozing. It was an awesome combination. And no one respected the military like Texas A&M. There’s a reason that people like Margaret Thatcher, Helmut Kohl, George Bush, etc. would go to that school back in the 90s.

At low altitudes radar, especially the ones used at airports, cannot distinguish aircraft (or drones) at distance. They're lost in the ground clutter; trees, hills, buildings, etc.

To be tracked, like on Flightradar 24 or ABSDexchange the drones would need a transponder. I'm not aware of a FAA rule mandating this.

Speculation seems to be that they're commercial drones being used to do surveying or something that requires several to be in the air at one time. Whether this is a legal, sanctioned "test", individuals or some outfit just fucking around is all debatable.

Anything flying with flashing anti-collision blinkers is flying under FAA regs and is a known aircraft. The ones firing weapons are helicopters on military training missions; firing their chain guns with tracers. That eliminates 99% of the reported drones.

I've heard them called Basque Shepherds. Probably a regional thing. Or maybe a sub-breed within the larger population.

Australian Cattle Dogs have sub-types, including Blue Heelers and Red Heelers. Red Heelers are descended from a line started by a rancher/breeder in Queensland who crossed a standard Collie with a Dingo (who ate nobody's baby) and are sometimes called Queensland heelers (mostly inn Queensland)

Ratings at CNN continue to crater and it has fallen behind the Food Network and the History Channel with primetime viewers. That is not necessarily true. It may or may not be flying under FAA regulations depending on what it's doing (speed, altitude, location, etc.) It is certainly not "known" to the FAA unless it is transmitting a location/alt/speed and other pertinent info and has filed a legit flight plan.

One thing is certain about these drones; they're not abiding by the various FAA laws and those instituted by city, county and state governments about who can fly them, under what conditions, where and when.

Top Russian Cruise Missile Engineer Gunned Down Near Moscow – Reports

A senior Russian cruise missile engineer was shot dead near Moscow, with Ukrainian media reporting he was assassinated by Ukraine’s intelligence.

Shatsky was deputy chief of design and head of software at the Moscow Experimental Design Bureau Mars, which develops automatic control and navigation systems for satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles. Mars is part of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

Exiled opposition journalist Alexander Nevzorov, who first broke the news of the assassination, said Shatsky also oversaw upgrades of Kh-59 missiles into the low-flying subsonic Kh-69 versions.

The Russian military is known to use Kh-59, Kh-69 and Kh-101 missiles against Ukraine.

Several Ukrainian news outlets, including RBC and Ukrainska Pravda, reported citing anonymous sources that Shatsky was gunned down as part of a “special operation” by the Ukrainian military’s HUR defense intelligence agency.

Someone on a Reddit sub that deals with drones thinks these are being used, perhaps illegally, to do some sort of nighttime mapping or surveying. There are applications, like LIDAR that benefit from this as there's less ground clutter (people, cars, etc.) moving around and LIDAR doesn't need light to "see."

Other uses that don't rely on light include surveying in spectral ranges outside the visible spectrum and the aforementioned "radar" technologies.

More likely is a bunch of nerds out to get YouTube, Facebook and TikTok clicks.

260 Anyone who has ever read any of the vast selection of UFO literature will have heard about UFO "flaps". A "flap" is a sudden huge increase in UFO reports, for no apparent reason. Perhaps one particular incident got traction in the press for some reason, and a sector of the general public gets motivated to look more closely at the sky than is their wont, and sure enough, they see stuff they don't understand, and report it. Press reports it, and the cycles repeats. Eventually, people get bored with it, and the flap dies out.

Same thing happens with bus plunges.

we are due for another Occupy Wallstreet, which will be underemployed "elites" like Taylor Lorenz looking to lead the oppressed masses to a world where those underemployed elites will find themselves employed by managing those oppressed masses.
and there is a lot of misery in the health care industry. Financialization and stakeholder approaches make sure the focus is on the money side, and the fraud, waste and abuse makes sure that everyone pays through the nose, and the Obamacare rules make sure there are no competitors to undercut the corps and giant hospital systems where patients can get lost and neglected.

We are going to wind up with our own French Revolution here, with a complete collapse of the health care system, and it will kill me.like as not.

Just saw a clip on instagram of what is purportedly a drone in the middle of a road somewhere in Jersey and had traffic stopped in both directions with emergency vehicles all over.

264 Another dog story. I always have coffee and cream cheese on sandwich thins for breakfast. Charlie the poodle likes cream cheese so when I empty a tub, I give it to him to lick clean. This morning, however, Charlie decided not to wait until I emptied the tub. I'll have to put the tubs further back from the edge of the island in the future.

I would not put it past the Feds to use some of their drone assets this way to feed the flap, and distract the public's eye from all the scumbaggery going on, pre-Inauguration.

That is pretty much what I thought early on. Our social mechanisms are being probed. Someone is harvesting all the data from all kinds of sources to see how this affects and propagates.

If the federal government denies something that something is happening and it is bad for the American People.

and

If the federal government says something is happening that something is not happening and it would have been good for the American People.

The Big Shots probably don't like drones. Assassination being at the top of the list as a reason why. Somebody is trying to provoke an excuse to severely limit if not ban them. Someone shoots down a legit drone, or a shot down drone falls on someone or something, and the game is on.

276 I guess terrorism does pay after all. United CEO says health care system is “flawed” and needs reform.

Theoretically I agree, it is flawed. It is in need of reform. We need way the fuck less regulation. But what this guy means of course is it needs more govt and eventually a full takeover.

Well done Luigi. You’ve accomplished your goals. Spit.
