I'm gonna guess this was done during . . . the twentieth century? What do I win?
Sandor was born in 1893 and died in '76, so he saw three quarters of the last century. This painting is from 1927. I was going to guess "between the wars," maybe the early Thirties, so I wasn't far off. I kinda like it. There's lots to analyze. In 1925 Sándor Bortnyik returned to Budapest after a long trip across Austria and Germany, where he opened up a poster design workshop which remained active until 1938. The Twentieth Century in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza collection is the painter’s tribute to his times. The subject of the work is industrial progress and technology — a central theme for the avant-garde of the age. The composition shows an ambiguous space that recalls El Lissitzky’s Proun paintings, combined with the presence of the “New Man” symbolised by robotised boxers, which also links up with the Russian artists’ pursuit of an athletic male image.

From museothyssen.org: "The subject of the work is industrial progress and technology — a central theme for the avant-garde of the age. The composition shows an ambiguous space that recalls El Lissitzky’s Proun paintings, combined with the presence of the 'New Man' symbolised by robotised boxers, which also links up with the Russian artists’ pursuit of an athletic male image.
"For this representation of the 'New Man' Bortnyik also draws from the 'triadic figures' of Oskar Schlemmer and the mechanical anatomies of Willi Baumeister, both of whom he met while at the Bauhaus. Furthermore, the underlying vision of the world conveyed by this painting may be related to man’s solitude in an increasingly mechanised world, a theme found in the paintings of both Léger and De Chirico." Uh . . . I dunno what that means. But the painting is striking. The term "robot" had already been coined at this time -- Karel Capek's play R.U.R. premiered in 1920.
I wonder why the yellow robot boxer has to be supported by guy wires? Is he merely a workout bag for the one in the green gloves? The plane looks like a Ford Trimotor, from my dim memory of the Revell model kit, and the 'Net says the Trimotor began produciton in '25, so Sandor could have seen it. Practically everything in the painting (aside from the clouds in the blue sky) is straight lines and angles. Yet here's this flowing curtain, partly drawn back, between the robots and the desk where the guy is watching the plane. What's that all about?
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 12, 2024 09:43 AM (J2vNu) 60
I like that the box a just a bit askew from the stripe lines. Just something as innocuous as that can subconsciously change a viewers perception.
If you look at nature everything is random and does not line up symmetrically. So when you see a landscape painting where the trees are the same height or spaced apart equally or rocks are all the same size, subconsciously something will appear off to the viewer. This is very nice. Bortnyik painted this in 1927 so he had in his rearview mirror the horrors of WWI expressed in the vertical plane, now boxed in by history, showing the pawns of the world being assaulted and battered by the creaking aristocracies, politicians, industrial, and economic powers. The horizontal plane moves towards a different time, the future it seems, where a single man, no longer a puppet, is free to ponder this future where humanity is uplifted by the lessons of the past applied to a soaring potential represented by the aircraft.
Verdict: Double Plus Good. Because of the morning art thread I have come realize that my wheel house is not the past masters but the modern works, 20th century on it seems. This preference most likely came from my love of photography and the great 20th century photographers bolstered by an equal love of 20th century American music and 20th century literature. All these resonant with me because much of it is understood from living through its second half. Thanks CBD for all this though featuring more French lesbians painted by French anarchists would up your game. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram at December 12, 2024 10:15 AM (e+6P0) 180

While I appreciate CBD introducing us to such a variety of artists and styes, I have to say, today's cubie abstraction really makes me appreciate classical paintings. I come here looking for a hearty three-course meal, and instead there's triscuits and cheese. And discount wine. Boxer boxing a dollish robot, with a box, and an airplane with a guy walking away. @292 I sympathize with your viewpoint, but I often think of myself as having a place in a world that has still life and cottages. And yes, I sure as hell remember the Nazi war criminal yelling 'Put me in the picture' in the first Night Gallery!
It's too soon to say whether it will become a genre, but Kincade's poke-a-hole-in-it lighting technique did have some artistic imitators. For several years at the end of the career of the old Official Artist of The Air Force Academy, there was an extra-cost version of The Class Painting (which has its own hidden mythos each class) with LED's to illustrate the night view of the biggest campus anywhere. Now that is one special type of wall art for sure, but it was striking as hell. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at December 12, 2024 11:02 AM (zdLoL) 324

300 If these drones are as big as some are saying they are, they are not just some amateur or survey drone.
Posted by: fd at December 12, 2024 10:52 AM (vFG9F) I keep hearing the phrase "as big as a minivan," Not sure what that means. But you can buy commercial drones for agricultural spraying that are 10 feet across right now if you have the money (about $20k) But I suspect these drones are being used by law enforcement and that is why they fly with navigation lights and the government doesn't want to talk about them. Not sure the law in NJ but some states have outlawed the use of drones by law enforcement. Posted by: blaster at December 12, 2024 11:03 AM (xhfG9) 326
"Hash browns, scrambled egg, and bacon bits. Forget the pizza sauce and use sausage gravy instead.
Breakfast pizza!" I've never understood the "otherism" that's employed about breakfast. Why not just have *pizza* for "breakfast pizza" rather than pretending we have to use entirely different ingredients? That's one of the things I like about Whataburger--you can literally order any one of their hamburgers at 6 in the morning if that's what you want. You're not restricted to the "breakfast" menu. France is bankrupt "The French Revolution resulted from two state crises which emerged during the 1750s–80s, one constitutional and one financial, with the latter providing a 'tipping point' in 1788/89 when desperate action by government ministers backfired and unleashed a revolution against the 'Ancien Regime.'" 27 This painting is from 1927. I was going to guess "between the wars," maybe the early Thirties, so I wasn't far off.
When aircraft engines were relatively heavy for the power they produced, the wings had to be pretty close to them at the front for balance. As they lost weight and gained power, the wings-engine distance could increase to a long nose like a WWII fighter. This painting represents the notion of a plane with a heavy, low powered engine from the 20s. Posted by: Ray Van Dune at December 12, 2024 11:30 AM (gfztU) 335
