The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

In the grand scheme of the monstrously out-of-control spending to which the federal government is addicted, foreign aid is not huge, but it is perhaps the most offensive! Americans in dire need after natural disasters are nickel-and-dimed by officious and process-fixated federal disaster organizations like FEMA. Hell, there is a federal department specifically designed to assist Americans with navigating the labyrinth! The Disaster Assistance Improvement Program. That's nuts! And trying to get federal assistance through various other programs like the VA or Medicaid or the dozens of temporary assistance programs is a descent into a Catch-22, or a Russian novel!

Sending our tax dollars to foreign lands while simultaneously borrowing trillions of dollars each year to fund the federal government is an obscene insult, and perhaps America has had enough!

Musk Signals Support for Eliminating Foreign Aid

[...] Musk wrote that DOGE “will address this with full transparency for the American people.”

Ramaswamy also weighed in, saying that “Much of U.S. foreign aid isn’t even authorized by Congress.”

Humanitarian assistance is just one form of foreign aid the United States provides. Others include the direct provision of commodities and equipment, technical assistance, funding for infrastructure, and support for foreign governments and international organizations.

According to the Congressional Research Service, Congress appropriated $66.1 billion in foreign assistance for fiscal year 2023.

One of the clearest signals of a government that is out of control is multiple streams of funding through multiple departments to accomplish the same goal. We have overlapping programs that simply pump money into foreign governments and NGOs without oversight. And while Congress may have appropriated money for foreign aid, the people who decide which countries get it are more often than not unelected bureaucrats with a clear agenda that does not mesh with the desires of the American people.

And even with clear direction from Congress, it's mostly wasted! $6,000,000 in 2022 to boost Egyptian tourism?

When the security of Ukraine's border has a higher priority than our own border, something is broken. When Americans have no clean water three months after a devastating hurricane, something is broken. When our bridges are falling down and our roads are crumbling, something is broken.

Absent a clear national security need, there should be no foreign aid dollars spent by Congress until our own budget reflects the needs of Americans first.

I truly, truly hate that particular analogy when the left is trying to pass some horrible new tax bill: "it will only cost 25 cents a day! That's less than a cup of coffee! Can't you spend 25 cents to help those in need?"

But if you propose cutting taxes and say that it will be 25 cents per day back in people's pockets, they scream that the world is coming to an end.

That is true.

But TBH that's still not the problem with housing costs exploding.

A) When you increase the population of the country it increases the demand for housing. Which means higher prices

B) When you put restrictions on construction for environmental and safety reasons you increase the cost

C) Every Bidenbuck the government spends increases inflation, which is running at over 10%/year.

So, yes people should be encouraged to save money better for big purchases...but we need to make the government stop intentionally making the problem worse

82 A view from DU:

"The absolute worst part of Biden not getting reelected

We have disinscentivized good governance and will therefore quite likely never get it again. Biden, with the smallest majorities an incoming President had in the modern era, governed in an amazing way. We got gun control, an increased child credit, a massive infrastructure program, a foreign policy that weakened our enemies and ushered out a dictator whose family had been in power since the Nixon era and the moon landing was actual news. We also got a cabinet that did their jobs with no drama or corruption. We got the highest economic growth in my lifetime, increased salaries to the middle and lower classes.

To take one example, Biden did a much better job on the economy than Reagan but since Reagan ended inflation sooner he won 49 states. Why will anyone bother with governance ever again? In Democracies you get the government that the public deserves, well, we apparently deserve crappy governance."

148 The Global Poverty Act was a bill in the U.S. Congress co-sponsored by 84 Representatives and 30 Senators. Introduced and sponsored in the US Senate by Sen. Barack Obama(D-IL) as S.2433.

The Global Poverty Act would have required the U.S. President to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to further the United States foreign policy objective of promoting the reduction of global poverty, the elimination of extreme global poverty, and the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of reducing by one-half the proportion of people worldwide, between 1990 and 2015, who live on less than $1 per day. This would require the United States to add 0.7 percent of the U.S. gross national product (23 billion to 98 billion a year) to its overall spending on Humanitarian Aid. This bill has been endorsed by Habitat for Humanity, Bread for the World, RESULTS and CARE.

The bill passed the Foreign Affairs Committee in July 2008. It was never scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor, however, and died at the end of the session.

If our regulations on docs prescribing any pain medicine above tylenol are why the kid sought out mind-changing illegal stuff, then yeah, he probably had the wrong target, since it was the feds who blocked proper pain management, not insurance companies. And ultimately, made him go nuts either from the pain or the pain's solution.

153 I think we're better off with Assad in Syria than whoever these "rebels" are.

These idiots who are behind the "syrian rebels" made Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen WORSE with their bullshit "regime change" "for democracy."

Insty had a pretty good article making the case that Assad was the last reliable leg of any Iranian influence (the Houthis are not reliable), and kicking it out is ultimately an even more entertaining result of the Hamas raid on the music festival.

207 NEW: Luigi Mangione had a back condition that was so bad that having physical relationships "with his back condition wasn’t possible."

The update comes as left-wingers are fantasizing about having s*xual relationships with Mangione.

Police say that they found a 262-page manifesto on Mangione taking responsibility for the m*rder.

According to R.J. Martin, the founder of a co-living community in Honolulu, Mangione opened up about his back condition during his time in the community.

"His spine was kind of misaligned," Martin said, as reported by the New York Times.

"He said his lower vertebrae were almost like a half-inch off, and I think it pinched a nerve. Sometimes he’d be doing well and other times not."

After a surfing incident, Mangione told Martin he wasn't in a relationship because "he knew that dating and being physically intimate with his back condition wasn’t possible. I remember him telling me that, and my heart just breaks."

In the 262-page handwritten manifesto, the writer admits to the m*rder and says they acted alone.

"To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone," it says.

It was an attempt at mind control, basically breaking and rebuilding personalities in an attempt to create operatives.
There is a lot of unverifiable chatter about it, but what I have heard it originally was a German WW2 project brought to the US, and in the 50;s and 60's attempting it with psychedelics, and that moved to earlier German research finding that it was most notable in people with early and severe abuse experience, generally being brutalized as a child makes people more malleable. There were also rumors that the people who survive such treatment have higher IQs though I can't see many people being particularly stable after that brutalization at an early age.
Now the rumors are that it was a way of creating sociopaths who will respond to directions, and that we are seeing the outcomes today.
Much of the rest of the rumors are distressing because of the level of abuse and brutalization that is implied.

217 >>>No I think that was the $1000 toilets.

Eh, I take any outraged media reports of "scandalous" military spending with a grain of salt. Not that I believe there isn't waste, but...

Example:

In the spare parts "scandal" of the 1980s, it was reported by The Washington Post that the Navy was paying Lockheed just over $600 for toilet seats for its P3-C Orion aircraft. That wasn't actually true. The $600+ was for the entire toilet system, which included the fiberglass enclosure, the chemical waste disposal pan/tank and the toilet seat.

The funny thing is, I flew that aircraft for the Navy at the time and the rule in my squadron and, in fact, every P-3 squadron Navy-wide, was that any crewmember who took a dump in the toilet during a flight would be the one who disposed of the contents of said toilet during post-flight. That rule was a big incentive to either go before manning up for takeoff, or hold it until after landing. Consequently, those $600+ toilets were hardly ever used.

The goal would be to pass this by early February. This would reserve the much tougher puzzle of tax reform for the second reconciliation bill later in 2025. So far, so sensible.”
