Gun Thread: Less Than Robust Content Edition!
FUNdamentals
We all know you cannot have fundamentals without fun, but did you also know you cannot have fundamentals without mentals? That's right, guys and gals, there is a bigly mental component to shooting, and in order to shoot well, you need to have the right mental attitude. Q: Weasel, how do you define "shooting well"?
A: Short Answer: Knowing where the bullet is going when you pull the trigger, and having it go there.
A: Longer Answer: Shooting consistently and predictably and showing reasonable improvement over time. You can call it lots of things but it all boils down to the same outcome, and that is consistently placing shots where you want them to go. Notice how I did not say "shooting well every single time?" Unless you're in combat, when shooting you are really just competing against your personal best and whatever benchmark for a swell day at the range you have set for yourself. Sounds great and easy-peasy Weasel! I have a brain so how do I get there, you ask? Well one sure-fire way is to practice while focusing on good solid fundamentals. Hell, I'd even be happy if you simply didn't practice reinforcing bad habits. But with that said, you need to be on top of your mental game too. Whatever your skill set, you need to have a positive mindset. You need to be confident and have faith in your skills, whatever the level. I have talked about this before, but I have seen guys lose a match simply because their head was not in the game. I kid you not. If you drag your shit to the range and are just going through the motions, you might as well stay home on the couch. You need to be actively engaged in what you are doing with a clear idea of what you are trying to accomplish and a set of measurable objectives for each practice session. If what you are doing isn't working, STOP and figure out what is going on. Don't try and make up for a bad stuation with an increased volume of fire. Go back to your fundamentals and make sure you aren't doing something goofy. Take a break for a few minutes if needed. I have never once seen a shooter improve a bad day at the range by using improper form harder or faster.. Dealing With An Angry Range
I would like to tell you otherwise, but no matter how proficient a shooter is, everyone has a bad day at the range from time to time. Lord knows that I do. It happens and you just have to deal with it. Most of the time there is a cascading effect and you go from bad, to worse, to wondering why you even bother. Don't miss the opportunity to get some benefit out of a disastrous performance though by taking notes and trying to identify what happened.
If starting over in a range session and re-focusing on fundamentals doesn't work, then perhaps it's time to pack up for the day. Sometimes the range is just angry.

I do plan on hitting the range in January.
And Weasel you are so correct about bad days at the range. At the last MoMe my rifle could not hit the proverbial broad side of the barn.
What did I do? I put it aside, helped others out with what they were doing. And later made my way over to the handgun for a little shoot and scoot which was waaaaaay fun.
No practicing of fundamentals here. Just keeping my head down and getting through the rest of the year.

Before I start, I want to thank GWB who reminded me last week that I just haven't built the necessary muscle memory yet, so slow down....
Range day today (which was very crowded)
Went thru the fundys, willed my hands/arms not to move, and repeatedly (with each shot) told my self to slow down, and
*no shots off the paper plate
*no shots off the 6 inch red target on the paper plate
*generally 4/5 shots landed in the 3inch circle (which was the goal). When they didn't I could review and revise and see good results.
So, a good day at the range. Very encouraging as there was finally some consistency, and I felt more confident and comfortable shooting.
Of course, I reserve the right to revoke all of this after a future exercise...

I have seen guys lose a match simply because their head was not in the game.
And that ain't just guns. Taco-ing* a training flight or checkride because you left your head somewhere on the ground, instead of in the cockpit with you.
(* "Unsatisfactory" is simply a "U" on the record, and that looks like a taco, and the military has to find a way to make everything ... different. So, you "taco" a ride when it's considered unsatisfactory.)
Don't try and make up for a bad stuation with an increased volume of fire.
There are times, though, when just saying "EF IT!" and firing through a couple of magazines while mad at the target can get get the fuzz out of your brain. (Though, screaming incoherently while doing so will get you a visit from the RO.) Just get the disconnect over with and get a little gunpowder therapy in your system. THEN calmly pull your target in, throw it away, and start fresh.

Hello, Weasel! Went to the range today w/ sharon (willows apprentice) and Iris. I didn't do fundamentals, but I did do some hands-on forensics w/ my B&T Station Six and my new B&T Glock 19 Hush Puppy to test whether a B&T Station Six could have been used in the murder of the United Health Care CEO in NYC. Both sharon and Iris participated as testers. If you're OK w/ it, I can provide a more technical analysis here.

I was at the NPS shooting range at Salt Lick Kentucky in the Boone national forest one day when a guy drove up and pulled out a S&W .500 magnum revolver and commenced firing. He was shooting at a target at 25 yards and not coming anywhere close to it. I was at the other end on the three benches and he was hitting the dirt in front of my target. I picked my stuff up and left. I left my target stand and target on the range. I was not going to ask for a cease fire to go and get them.

Glad you asked! Remember I had my sights set (heh) on a S&W Model 10 a few weeks ago? Didn't find any I liked at a price I liked, so after some intense internal debate I am now the proud owner of a Model 19 Classic .357 Combat Magnum. The price was right, there's a rebate, and she is gorgeous - except for the hideous key safety (or as someone called it, "the Hillary Hole"). I'm willing to overlook that for everything else. Merry Christmas to me!

For the AR10 one of the Geissele SSA E’s or the SD if you want a flat trigger. If you can find it, the KAC 2-stage match trigger is one of the best IMVHO

Whatever trigger you choose, is it compatible w/ your AR-10 lower? Since DOD never adopted an AR-10 battle rifle platform, there's really isn't a "MILSPEC" standard for everyone to fall in on. As an extreme example, I don't think the trigger groups for an KAC SR-25 and H&K MR 762A1 are interchangeable despite the fact that the SR-25 is a close copy of the M110 DMR and the H&K is a civilian copy of the M110A1 DMR.
Does anyone have input on specific models?

Just for perspective on life in Canada, I'm watching the worst horror and slasher movies I can find.
A lot of time, all crap starts breaking loose and 'The Weasel Question' comes up.
"Do you have a gun?' - The Weasel Question. I just always think of you, when I'm watching a movie where crap is about to get real and people want guns.

I was at the NPS shooting range at Salt Lick Kentucky in the Boone national forest one day when a guy drove up and pulled out a S&W .500 magnum revolver and commenced firing. He was shooting at a target at 25 yards and not coming anywhere close to it. I was at the other end on the three benches and he was hitting the dirt in front of my target. I picked my stuff up and left. I left my target stand and target on the range. I was not going to ask for a cease fire to go and get them.

I am below the "expert" level of many of the Gub Thread posters, but if you are an "intermediate" and have an interest in learning about those cartridges in particular (or about cartridge characteristics in general) I recommend that video.

If someone is hitting a different lane, I think the range officer at our local state range would intervene. They tend to stay on top of things.
I mean, they're friendly and professional, but if someone's tearing up topsoil they would likely sidle up and say "Hey, shoot that often?"

Range report: reloading bench addition: Due to the length of time it will take for the new barrel to come in, I finally broke down and finished putting together a reloading bench.
Thanks to the superior reloading guidance of weaselsan gunsei, my first trip out with my loads, I managed an ES of ~22 fps. To say I was surprised is an understatement. I also managed a decent group but, unless I can repeat the group, it will remain what I think it was, a fluke.
One of the things I ordered was an RCBS bullet removal die, as I've got components I need to break down and get ready for reuse. No way I'm going to toss perfectly good Norma brass. Anyway, as I was pulling apart some of the ammunition which was loaded for me, I was shocked at the amount of force it took to pull the bullet from one lot. I sort of assume whoever sized the ammo did a poor job of resizing the neck, as some of the other stuff came apart quite smoothly.
Next weekend will be the true test of ammo as I've loaded. And, I'm like a kid with a new toy. So many permutations to try.

For details about the Station Six, see the Gun Thread of December 18, 2022, complete w/ pictures of the pistol (w/ bolt open and closed) and the suppressors for it. Bottom line: I think it's highly unlikely a B&T Station Six was used based on today's field experiments. Here's why:
1) The shooter's actions on video don't match the actions required to cycle the bolt on the Station Six. To operate the Station Six one must grab the bolt at the very rear of the receiver, twist it to the left, pull the bolt back, push it forward and twist it to the right to complete to bolt closure. This is a four-step cycle of operation that takes more time than the shooter does on the video.
2) The Station Six (by design, like its Welrod ancestor) usually requires you to invert the pistol in order to allow the spent casing to fall out. You're supposed to catch the spent casing in order to not leave any evidence behind. The video of the shooter doesn't show him doing inverting his pistol at all.

I managed to get Mrs. Splunge out to the range with me yesterday. She loves picking up brass, and insisted that I call her the "Brass Wench" in all Gun Thread posts mentioning her.
She can sure shoot her little Glock, and somehow manages to shoot her little .38 revolver even better. I would not have thought that tiny barrel was good to 10 yards, but I thought wrong.
Meanwhile, she examined my targets and said "you're like a horseback rider who just rides around the arena. You need to get out and compete."
Not that I'm that good, you understand, just that the time to start improving by doing that kind of stuff appears to have arrived. 11 months of weekly range trips have gotten me past the basics. If you're going to believe the Brass Wench, that is.

IIRC, a genuine antique cap and ball revolver is an antique, and not considered a "firearm" under Canadian firearms laws. Reproductions, nope. A repro flintlock long gun is OK, repro percussion rifle, nope. Genuine antiques that are shootable are very expensive, as a consequence. And certain antique cartridge firearms* are OK, if made before 1898, IIRC. Mauser C96? OK. Webley Mk I? OK. Try and find one.

I tried a couple of rounds, didn't chrono it, just noted it shot as expected because the bullets were seated very deep in the case.

The new "Classic" has a 4.25-inch barrel with a red insert on the front sight. I know there are purists who will turn up their noses at this iteration, but GunBlue490, some of whose videos have been featured here and who is a certified S&W armorer, has a video out with evidence that the new one is a significant upgrade in many respects.

One thing on gifting a gun....
Some FFLs will get really hinky about you buying a gift for your SO as a straw purchase. Some of them are more jerkish about it than others. (A bunch are very good, though.)

One of my last indoor range trips, first shot the guy next to me takes out the target carrier. Then he fires at it on the floor. Chaos ensues. I’m done before this guy shoots someone.

Thanks for including the black powder segments in the post. Not surprised about the flintlock at 200 yards. I've shot in informal muzzleloader silhouette competitions, offhand at 25 to 100 yards. The further the target the bigger. The 100 yards target was a bear about 6 inches wide and 12 high. This was with patched round ball and it was not unusual to get 5 or 6 hits out of ten. (Sadly, 1 or 2 out of ten was also not unusual.) The flintlocks, even properly tuned ones, have the slightest delay in ignition compared to percussion which calls for a longer, steadier hold but that's part of the fun and challenge. I think there was about an 8 inch drop to hit the center of the bear.
I never tried those targets from a rest. Wonder if my score would improve.
BTW, my flintlock was a 50 caliber with a 36 inch barrel and buckhorn rear sight.

IIRC, a genuine antique cap and ball revolver is an antique, and not considered a "firearm" under Canadian firearms laws. Reproductions, nope. A repro flintlock long gun is OK, repro percussion rifle, nope. Genuine antiques that are shootable are very expensive, as a consequence. And certain antique cartridge firearms* are OK, if made before 1898, IIRC. Mauser C96? OK. Webley Mk I? OK. Try and find one.

PSA has figured out that I have other priorities for my budget right now and really, really trying me.
PA10 lower for $179 and upper for $429 means a full up AR10 for 600ish bones (plus mags, optics, and sling).
And then they had to show me the Heritage Model 92 and the creek has a lever gun shaped hole in the bottom. Very reasonably priced.
Darn you PSA!

3) My B&T Station Six has pretty picky about ammo. Today, I fed it American Eagle 147 grain FMJ with a flat nose. None of us could get the Station Six to feed properly with this ammo.
4) Although the B&T Station Six uses 9mm 1911 magazines (9 rounds), the B&T user's manual says to load a maximum of only five rounds in the magazine. If the shooter cycled six rounds through his pistol (three empties, three live rounds), that's more than B&T tells you to load into a magazine, assuming it feeds properly.
5) Purchasing a Station Six requires you to file an NFA Form 4. A suppressor comes with the pistol. The total cost is about $3,000 for the pistol, "training" (baffled) suppressor, "operational" (wipe) suppressor, and the two NFA tax stamps required to buy them.
6) B&T Station Six pistols are NOT widely available or stocked. I'd be surprised if there are as many as 2,000 in the whole country. A scarce, expensive firearm requiring NFA tax stamps to purchase (plus a waiting period) seems an unlikely for an assassin.
For the above reasons, I think a regular semi-auto pistol with a suppressor (possibly non-commercial and w/o a Nielson device) is the more likely culprit. (End)

Any of you on the Book Thread will recognize this point, but I think it's on topic: The US is far closer to German culture than English. Germany has a gun ownership rate of 20%, Austria is at 30%. German self-defense laws are far better than England. Germany has a hunting culture based on conservation and citizen participation; England's is entirely based on estates.
Canada *should* be closer to the US/Germany, but the elites are very English in the notion that firearms are simply bad and self-defense is forbidden.
If you look at the Anglosphere (NZ, Australia, Canada, UK) the US sticks out like a sore thumb. We are not with those people.

That movie started a lot of interest in percussion Hawken repros. The fifty caliber ones are probably the most common. Used ones, if you know what to look for and look out for, are pretty affordable. (Percussion caps are starting to be more available recently but the cost still makes long time shooters wince.) Many states don't require background paperwork like for modern guns but that varies.

Forgot to mention that I tested my second batch of .45 ACP reloads this week. Ran flawlessly this time. I had increased the seating depth reducing the overall length of the cartridge and increased the crimp just a bit. Who knew 2/1000 of an inch could make such a difference?

It’s a process that works with time. I was inventorying recently and determined that my supplies will now out live me. I then specifically added all my reloading stuff to my gun trust so that it does not go through probate.

Van Owen, what projectile are you using in your 45? Just curious. For cost reasons I use lead (Missouri Bullet, BHN 12, 200g SWC) for most everything, though I do load some 230g FMJ for my self-defense ammo "duplicate" or training rounds.

The Mark 27 is a Glock 19 fitted with a threaded barrel, light/laser (Surefire X300 seems to be a favorite), and Trijicon RMR red dot sight. Note that the older pistols (Mark 23, 24, 25) have not been retired from service. The Glocks are supplementing them, not replacing them (for now).

A very brief perusal to check on the pool temperature indicated availability has returned (for basics) of components, but prices remain unfortunate. Of course, I haven't left a grocery store for less than $50 in months (whereas just a few years ago that meant meat, alcohol, or something else pricey in the mix), so basic powders being 30% higher than I recall is no surprise. Primers seem stuck at double or more the old normal price of $0.3 per.

SOBVO, try it with a high pressure load like 9mm!
.45 is very forgiving. I blew out a 9 mm round when the rifling on my FPC was engaging the round early and resetting it deeper.
I had to do a chamber casting to figure out what was going on. Completely different rifling engagement than the S&W pistols.

Just a reminder that one of the most effective training tools out there are snap caps.
You can practice loading and unloading. Clearing the chamber due to a misfire. Dry firing. Testing magazines and mechanisms.
Whenever I buy some ancient, cobwebbed, corroded heirloom, I first get the snap caps (or dummy rounds) for it, because you don't want to work those problems out on the range with live ammo.

I figure if I somehow exhaust my stockpile I'll just start reloading 54R. Many guys have success loading softer recoiling stuff that's good out to 200yds or so, which checks all the boxes.

Iris and sharon also tested out my new B&T Glock 19 "Hush Puppy." This "Hush Puppy" comes with a slide lock, milled out slide to accommodate an Aimpoint Accro P2 red dot sight, and a small (3" length) "Hush Puppy" suppressor. The Aimpoint Accro really aids accuracy because it's set low enough in the slide to allow the iron sights to co-witness the red dot. Shooting the pistol with the slide lock engaged allows for maximum quiet by stopping the noise of the slide's movement. The "Hush Puppy" suppressor does a really good job for its size and weight. Using subsonic ammo, it reduces the noise of a 9mm to that of a .22LR. The suppressor uses wipes, so its effectiveness begins to drop after about ten shots. We put five shots through the "Hush Puppy" suppressor today. Sharon and I had one each. Iris had three. Using the slide lock and suppressor together on a set of new wipes creates a partial vacuum in the barrel and suppressor. This makes racking the slide harder compared to an unsuppressed pistol.

The difference between paintballs and sim-munitions is that sim-munitions allow trainees to practice loading, firing, aiming, and reloading their issued weapon under pressure in addition to "force on force" training. Note that sim-munitions require trainees to wear eye protection and heavy clothing (if not body armor). Taking a hit to bare skin will break the skin. A hit to a covered part of body can leave you with a bruise or welt. Weapons modified to shoot sim-munitions cannot shoot normal ammo.

And those were the clips that were not edited out for their promotion. Given the number of women at the line, I'm guessing DEI had more to do with who got to demonstrate firing the Sig.

Range time with #1 son, MAE and LazyMessenger. We shot a variety of pistols, and with every one of them I challenged myself to have a consistent trigger pull, smooth and straight back. I was able to shoot straight.
Son #1 has shown tremendous improvement. He can pick up just about anything and do fairly well. He also has been dry firing at home with his red dot. He figured out what low left means.
Fun time at the range. It really is therapeutic.

If you load in batches or single stage, not progressive, you can do a lot in an easy chair while watching TV or listening to music. Decapping, resizing, and priming is all mechanical. The time I don't allow distractions is when loading the powder charge. Once the bullet seating die is adjusted correctly, you can go back to the easy chair.

Landon's B-17E flight that flew into the attack at Pearl Harbor, originally the guns for the bombers were supposed to be shipped via cargo vessel to Pearl. But plans were changed and the machine guns, packed in Cosmoline, were loaded into the bombers' bomb bays. But due to the fuel requirements, no ammo or gunners flew on these planes. So they were still defenseless against the Japanese.

One thing the Modular Handgun Competition was supposed to fix was the wide variety of handguns that proliferated after M9 was selected to replace not just the M1911, but all of the numerous .38/.357 revolvers and other one-off handguns in DOD in the 1980s (Mark 22 Mod 0, M15 General Officer pistol, modified M1911s made for the USAF OSI, etc.). As we know, the M9 itself failed to meet this goal as first SOCOM, the investigation units (CID, NCIS, OSI) and others went their own separate ways. We'll see if the M17/M18 is any more successful than M9 was at becoming a universal handgun for DOD.

I opened up a can of my 20 year old freeze dried Spaghetti and meat sauce to see how it’s faired .

Hmmm. For some reason picked up a Skrewball whisky at the check-out a few years ago (think the company's actually based here). Just one of the little 50ml airline size bottles. My first gun was a Dixie Gun Works replica of Boone’s rifle. 50 cal round ball over either 70 grains of 3f or 90 of 2f. Fantastically accurate and pretty flat shooting out to 100 yards.
I hunt with a.54 percussion Lyman now. Slow twist, so it’s round ball again. Just shy of 2000 fps at the muzzle and again, pretty flat to about 100 yards. That and a brace of BP revolvers have introduced a lot of folks to shooting in general and BP in particular.
The AR guys are always surprised by how accurate they are…

262 ... Modern guns only shooters often think muzzleloader targets will look like you used a blunderbuss loaded with nails. Unless you are shooting past 100 yards or need fast followup shots, a slow twist muzzleloader can do it all. Even a patched round ball in a smooth bore can be damn accurate at 50 or 60 yards.

I've been hunting in Pennsylvania's flintlock only season since 1978. I use T/C .50 Hawken loaded with patched round ball over 90 grains ff. I've got deer out to 125 yds with this load. I like shots at 75 to 100 yds because I've found that at close range the deer will sometimes jump at the flash charge resulting in a miss or bad hit.

I have a Ruger Mk IV/.45. This is a .22 with a grip angle similar to a 1911 Colt. I also have a 1911 Colt in .45. I am happy with both guns.
