Isn't that what shot glasses are for?
A lot of people think a shot glass is one oz., when it's actually 1.5 oz. I had TG dinner at my sister and BiL's house, and he's just starting to get in to cocktails. He asked if I would like a Manhattan, to which I of course said yes. Unfortunately, and unknown to me, he used two shots of a cask strength rye, which I was not expecting. Thus, I had close to two Manhattans instead of the one I expected, and felt it. Needless to say, I then passed on the wine with dinner. Posted by: Archimedes at December 08, 2024 02:21 PM (xCA6C) 47

Commands is a bit strong. A lot of sellers put high prices on them. But in any thrift store, or even consignment antique mall, you can find vintage pyrex at lower prices than new pyrex. (In consignment stores you will often see vastly varying pricesan order of magnitude sometimeson the same exact item in different booths.) In case you were wondering:
Vintage Pyrex is considered better than newer Pyrex because it's made from a stronger, more heat-resistant glass: Vintage Pyrex is made from borosilicate glass, which is stronger than the soda-lime glass used in newer Pyrex. Borosilicate glass contains boron trioxide, which gives it a lower thermal expansion coefficient and higher heat resistance. This means that vintage Pyrex can withstand big thermal shocks, like going directly from the oven to a cold countertop. You can tell the difference between vintage and new Pyrex by looking at the markings on the bottom. Vintage Pyrex is labeled with all-caps "PYREX", while newer Pyrex is labeled with all-lowercase "pyrex". You can use vintage Pyrex in the oven at temperatures up to 425ºF... Posted by: Oddbob at December 08, 2024 02:20 PM (3TtIR) Well, if you must know, I am kidding here, leastwise as far as being able to see any monazite crystals. (a Thorium-bearing mineral) But monazite, and sometimes uraninite do commonly occur as scarce accessory grains in granite rock. And pink granite is anomalously radioactive due to K40 in the pink potassium feldspar that gives it its pink color. It amuses me no end that greentards who vehemently oppose nuclear power are happily installing large slabs of radioactive rock in their kitchens. It would be fun to wave the probe of a scintillometer over those pink granite counters. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 08, 2024 02:29 PM (EElO8) 67

FWP: Having a broken pinky toe and no crutches.
Had a kid birthday trip to the mall yesterday. Spouse got me a complimentary wheelchair from the mall, which he needed to b/c they placed them as far away from any entrance door as possible. Then, he pushed me around stores. Let's say it's a good thing I don't work for the federal disability department. There was ONE store that was probably ADA compliant for a wheelchair that we went in - the Pro Sports Jersey store. All others were mediocre to bad - we almost took out 3 displays in Williams Sonoma and a store employee literally had to move 3 floor boxes just so we could leave (and it's good I could move my leg, b/c if I couldn't, I'd have speared that leg anyway leaving WS)...a few stores, I told the spouse not to bother going in but he felt bad. Thankfully, this is temporary. But man, stores need to space out - not sure how strollers, wheelchairs, crutches, or scooters handle them... It is much more difficult to achieve a spark under compression. We can’t see that - so we want to see a good snappy spark in the open air. Posted by: Common Tater at December 08, 2024 02:42 PM (cUWlp) 100

Can I put more gas in it and it'll be fine now? Or do I need to get all of it out because I assume with the way the tank is setup the gas on the bottom...which will be the oldest gas...gets used first?
Posted by: 18-1 at December 08, 2024 02:37 PM (oZhjI) Pouring in fresh gas will dilute the nasties in the dregs of the old gas, and the tank will fine. But the carburetor bowl will be full of the worst part of the old gas, and that's why it won't start. Best course of action is to remove the carb bowl (often a single central bolt), dump it out, and flush with aerosol carb cleaner. If that's not practical, you could try priming the carb through the air intake. An aerosol can of the "flammable" brake cleaner is good for this. Starting fluid is kind of drastic in its action; the engine hammers hard running on it. I always shut down my snowblower by turning off the fuel valve, and letting it run until the carb goes dry and it quits on its own. Keurigs -- Are they worth it? Or are they a stupid kraut scam?
Im inclined to the scam side. I only just started drinking coffee last year (dont ask); I have a drip coffee maker; my dad has a Keurig. Both require filling with water before making coffee. Both require regular cleaning. Both take about as much time to make a cup of coffee (they both have to do the same thing: heat the water and then drip it through the coffee grinds)and so the Keurig takes about twice as long to make my two cups of coffee in the morning. One advantage to the Keurig is that everyone can have a different coffee flavor by choosing their own pod instead of using the communal carafe. But thats got to be contrasted against the greater amount of time it will take to brew each cup one after the other, rather than all at once. Old stale oxidized gasoline will burn, but just because it burns doesn’t mean anything. It turns to glue when the engine cools off. The carburetor is the least of the worries. It basically cements valves, lifters, and piston rings down tight.
The next time you go to start the engine - on a pushrod V8 they all turn into Pretzels, as the exhaust valves are all frozen shut with tar. Oops! Don’t do this. I saw ruined engines because of $20 worth of juice. Same with Anti-Freeze. Posted by: Common Tater at December 08, 2024 03:03 PM (cUWlp) 152

Don’t forget Salt. Cocoa (and Chocolate) needs salt to bring out the flavor, like many foods.
I mix up Sugar, Cocoa powder, and a big pinch salt for every serving, and then make a thick paste with a little water. Heat this up till bubbly, it tempers Cocoa a little bit or whatever, without being in the presence of fat globules. It also mixes easy. Then mix in Half and Half and proceed as normal, heat till scalding. Add Cinnamon or fresh Nutmeg. Make it a little sweeter and add a healing tablespoon of freeze-dried coffee, and you’ve a fine Mocha. Milk is OK, Evaporated Milk is a distant 3rd. Condensed Milk works handily, you’ve Cocoa and nothing else needed. Powdered Milk is the Achilles heel of Cocoa. Nido or Peak makes it palatable. Notice at the grocery, the Communists are always substituting Skim Milk in their Chocolate Milk. This is Wrong and Should Be Punished. Bring back truth in labeling. “Ice Cream” can’t read like a fucking chemistry set ingredients list. Among the worst offenders are “Natural” and “Homestyle”. I have a snowblower that’s 12 or 13 years old. I never do any maintenance on it. I can’t remember the last time I changed the oil. I use regular 87 gas in it. I don’t use any additives or anything. Throw gas in when it’s needed. Over the summer old gas sits.
And every winter it starts up (sometimes after many tries the first use) and does what it needs to do. Granted I use it on average 5 or 6 time winter. That’s how many snowfalls require e blower vs using a shovel. But still, a lot of this emphasis on using this or that gas or obsession with maintenance….i feel is somewhat overblown. —— Yup. You have no clue. Hint: it depends on the gasoline cormulation, among other things,, and temperature. Gasoline spoils, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. But it spoils. In carburetors, it boils off the light ends when it sits. Because vapor pressure doesn’t factor in sealed fuel systems in cars and trucks. If you have no problems using year old gasoline, count yourself lucky. Fresh gasoline gives better performance, way before it bricks your motor stale gasoline starts to stink to high heaven. It is overblown, but there’s no downside to using good fresh gas when an engine is being difficult. Now that’s a fact. Posted by: Common Tater at December 08, 2024 03:53 PM (cUWlp) 216

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at December 08, 2024 03:02 PM (d9fT1) I object to this, everyone knows a proper cocktail involves vodka and tomato juice; or rum, Coca Cola and lime juice. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at December 08, 2024 03:43 PM (SBwvE) Agreed. Plain old petroleum gasoline will eventually evaporate off the light ends, and the dregs can oxidize and polymerize into a tarry varnish, too. Seen a lot of it. My snowblower has 120 volt AC electric starter. Fill it with fuel, choke it, hit the primer button a few times, and then the starter button. It usually fires off right away, but extended cranking is possible, if it has to be done. Once warmed up, easy restart via the recoil handle if I have to shut down to clear debris from the augers.
