Music Thread: Brazilian Music? Who'da Thunk It!

deadcrocs.jpg

And who knew that Garrett is a Dead-Head!

Speaking of The Dead, I am no fan, but out of their hundreds of discrete songs and thousands of chaotic concert versions, there are several that I really enjoy. And click the Croc photo above to hear my favorite. Yes, I have linked to it before and I will link to it again! I am nothing if not repetitive!

I didn't listen to much music this week...but at dinner one night we were serenaded by a Brazilian musician who did some very pleasant stuff. Normally I am not enamored of live music during dinner...it's either too loud (GET OFF MY LAWN!), or it is discordant...or both!

But this guy had volume down pat, and it was all quite pleasant. And new. Of course you can measure my knowledge of Brazilian music in picograms.

This is the guy: Nicola Són

***
This is just fun music. I don't think it is particularly...musical...but it is nonetheless a pleasure to hear. Occasionally.

******
Southside Johnny And The Asbury jukes are the best band you have probably never heard of.

***
On the other hand, everybody has heard of The Beach Boys, and that is a very good thing, because they deserve the attention. I love them. And you should too!

***
Bob Dylan. He's a tough one. I love his early stuff, and the knock on his voice is almost completely unfair. But as he aged, his voice decayed, and so did his writing. If you want to hear what I mean, just try to struggle through all eight and a half minutes of "Hurricane." Excellent music, awful, insulting, apoetic (is that a word) lyrics, and beaten about the head with RACE! is an unlovely bonus.

But here? He shines!

***

Well, that's it. As I said, I didn't listen to much music, although I did eat sweetbreads twice, so there is always something positive in life!

1 Thx CBD.
The only exposure I had to Brazilian music was when I saw David Byrne and his band Rei Momo at the Bardavon theatre good show.
Saw Southside Johnny at the Palace theater in Albany when I was in college. The balcony started moving from the people dancing and the management moved everyone downstairs

29 I would group Boston, the Beach Boys, and the Ramones...why? All bands that came up with a instantly recognizable sound, based in earlier sounds, but yet completely different and unique, that became very popular (arguable with the Ramones, who were never that popular while active) but could never vary from that sound without not being very good and so often get sneered at by technically based music critics.

One of the first songs my guitar instructor taught me. My friend and I were setting up at a friend's party, and while he was fiddling with the sound, I started riffing on it. The audience caught the reference from the elevator scene from The Blues Brothers movie. We owned them from that moment..

--------
Definitely some great stuff. Ol' Bob comes across as rushed sometimes because he's trying hard to get the tune out sometimes. A lot of his single cuts sound like he's just doing them for the first time, instead of the eleventy-times it took to get them right in the studio. (Or maybe he was satisfied after 3 takes.) I really like "Don't think Twice" because the first time I heard it was a cover by Peter Paul and Mary from their first best-of album. They got the feeling and pace down right, and of course it sounded better than Bob singing it.

Yeah, I though he was from Louisiana or Florida at first. Turns out that's not the case. I them together around 2014 and Quinn, while in awe of his mentor, would get a bit cheeky on guitar. It was then that Mr. Guy what stop his clowning and school Quinn about who was the master and who pipsqueak. There love between them was apparent.

Ripple. And Ripple's big problem is that it's by the Dead. If Ramblin Jack Elliot or Guy Clark or Van Zandt or someone similar had written and recorded it then it would probably be regarded as one of the best songs of the 20th century.

As it is it's just the Dead's most well known song.

148 Oh musica brasileira is great, big part of that incredibly vibrant culture (no sarcasm on this use of "vibrant"). My knowledge of Brazilian musing is frozen in time, but that's hardly a problem, as so much is classic/evergreen.

MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) covers/covered a wide range of popular music, but not really what we consider "pop" music. More stuff that people will recognize, at least the melodies from the older stuff (bossa nova). Anyway I doubt it's change and when I spent a long time there it was great. I only saw Gilberto Gil live, among the then-big names.

The band was a mash up Kim Wilson (Vocal - Harp), Larry Taylor (Bass), Barrelhouse Chuck (Piano), Kirk Fletcher (Guitar), Richard Innes (Drums). They were a pretty good bar band (OK I nearly died because that band was off the charts).

Chuck and I made a connection that night and all night long he would give head nod when he was going to show off - it was hilarious good fun. Later that night he gave me a signed CD. He passed a couple years later.

234 Zydeco is neither fun, nor music.

It's an abomination: A scraping squeaking Frankenstein's monster, with all of the worst parts of rockabilly, bluegrass, and some sort of French-German folk sh*t crudely stitched together.

The one thing about New Orleans that I hate. By comparison, the 100 degree heat with 100 degree humidity by 7am with pervasive vomit stink from the night before is charming.
