Apparently many people's mileage varies, but the fall of the Assad regime is a calamitous blow to the Iranian axis of intimidation and aggression. The 2nd in a few months. Israel devastating Lebanese Hezbollah (and earlier, Hamas, though that was less important) was the first. This one - which also is close to an existential blow to Hezbollah - is big.
Tehran itself may be in danger of change, with a new US administration in the offing - one not committed to the insane, indefensible, inexplicable Obama/Biden policy of accommodating the mullahcracy. Their axis is shattered, their credibility is nil, and Israel strikes them at will - without response in the latest instance. The glass might be .000000000075% empty, but not sure how people are seeing that. Posted by: rhomboid at December 07, 2024 10:32 PM (1m82a) 58

Heh… roller skates.
As a young'n middle of the last century, I tried on the skates that clamped on my PF Flyers. Once. Didn't go far. I think they didn't stay on well. And I'm fond of modes of transport that include brakes. Fast forward to early this century, and I and the three kids all got in-line boots. I was surprised to find I mastered them immediately. Some experience water- and snow-skiing probably helped. We enjoyed going to the park (in town, not on our country driveway) and skating around and around… until that day… Posted by: mindful webworker - rocker and roller skates at December 07, 2024 10:54 PM (OVBTn) 108

…there was a steep hill with a turn right at the bottom. I saw one kid zip down and, to my great surprise, zip around the turn like a pro.
Then a second kid zipped down, made the turn, and I heard a scream. Dad, being an idiot, immediately headed down the hill, and about half-way down I realized I was unlikely to make that turn and was going too fast. I threw myself off the path, trying to land on my butt with feet out front, but instead flipped over head-first and cracked my head on a rock. Only time I was ever glad I was wearing a helmet! I actually blanked out for a moment. Third kid was at the top of the hill, certain he had just seen most of his family wiped out. Fortunately, I was the only one injured. I walked down and found one kid delighted to have successfully made the turn, and the other, who had screamed, had merely fallen safely after turning. I never went skating again. I also had all kinds of toy soldiers from The Civil War to the American West to WWII, both Kraut and Jap sets. Built model airplanes and one ship (which got 'sunk' with firecrackers). Had an original GI Joe, with tripod machine gun and a Jeep. Boys not receiving such toys does have an effect on our military, and not a good one. Also, Christina Hoff Summers says boys are being taught in our schools to be girls, not boys, as girls are easier to teach. That's another problem. Really there's a war on boys/men at every turn. There are no “good guys” in Syria; it’s like Alien vs Predator, fun to watch but you don’t want to be on either side.
Still, do not mourn for Assad; he was the willing conduit for all of the weapons shipments from Iran to Hezbollah all these years. His fall represents the collapse of Iran’s Axis of Influence, and it could easily lead to the fall of the Iranian Regime itself. Jensen still has a website with lots of cool stuff. When I wrote to them, upon inquiry as to a replacement glass window availability for a #75, they sent that, and they sent a box full of parts and accouterments and gee-gaws for mine. “Take what you want and send a check” and of course I bought everything. A little Penzoil oiler, fuel tray, power take off pulley, etc. I think Distilled water is best for these. Esbit tablets are the easiest fuel to use as well. These can be tough to find. I decided early on in the Ukraine Russia thing that I knew absolutely nothing about it and I never would because everyone involved, or anyone who talks about it, has reasons to lie about. Ukraine was voted one of the most corrupt nations in the world before the war and a lot of the US Taxpayer money being 'spent' over there is likely in Swiss or Cypriot bank accounts. And Russia has been lying for so long they tell the truth only by accident. All the US and European politicians have ulterior motives, secret plans or really dumb 157 move check-mates that will save the world for democracy that fail after one side or the other does something they did not plan in those 157 moves. Can everyone involved lose without screwing us?

I can’t find good Mexican Oregano, maybe they switched to growing weed or something. Even the fancy spice houses just have the leaves, kinda musty and stale. The good stuff should be bright green and really strong. It was one of those few some spices that don’t go stale.

What is remarkable, 7 Dec ‘41 attack
By February strict rationing is already in place. Five (5) car tires is all you can have. Civilian production of consumer goods shut down “for the duration”. Everything. No more cars, radios, bicycles, motorcycles, refrigerators or anything. Even buying a tube of toothpaste meant turning the empty one in. They were made of metal in those days, tin/lead and recyclable. Even the 1946 and 1947 cars were re-badged prewar designs, I think it took a couple more years before they got tooled up. Britain didn’t fully end rationing till 1954 and were in rough shape economically Posted by: Girl On Skates That Day at December 08, 2024 12:12 AM (1QxHi) 281

Girl on Skates, even more surprising is that Germany didn't begin serious rationing until well into the war. Possibly not early 1943 ("total war" policy), but not much earlier. Unless my memory is getting aggressively worse. Some juicy scandals in Berlin involving big shots cheating on the system. Some were actually punished.
Japanese had experienced fairly extensive rationing since 1937 or shortly thereafter. In a society far far less prosperous or materially rich than the US. Germany actually had a per capita income significantly below the US prior to festivities commencing, something else most don't know. Posted by: rhomboid at December 08, 2024 12:16 AM (1m82a) 288

Its not perfect, and if you don't know the history beforehand it may be hard to follow cause it goes really fast from Pearl to Midway and touches on everything Navy related, and I seriously doubt the real Dick Best was anything like the movie Dick Best but the visuals are awesome and as far as big scale war movies go it is the most accurate I have seen although of course you can pick holes in it. One of my all time favorites and a really good example of what could be done with modern CGI if there was only a market for depicting actual history rather than the actions of comic book characters. Posted by: rhomboid at December 08, 2024 12:16 AM (1m82a) Just look at two popular consumer tech items of the era: automobiles and radio sets. USA had many brands of cars, and the cheaper ones were affordable to nearly anyone with a steady job. Also, many, many brands of radio sets, consoles, table models, portables, ranging in price from very cheap to extremely expensive. Germany had several brands of luxury cars, but practically nothing affordable for the wage-earner, and much the same thing applied for radios. The Nazis introduced cheap cars (the VW) and cheap radios. Few VW cars ever got to their intended market, but the "Empfanger" radios sold in the many thousands. Forgot who asked, but some of the basics of the Uke-Rus thing are not hard to follow. Specifically the key thing, the location of the line of contact (front), who controls what, and related trends and issues.
And the super-simplified summary is: Russia has advanced, glacially and carefully, westward and northward, in a never-ending series of small scale engagements for towns villages and cross-roads. It's been evident almost from the start, or at least from 2023 when the slapdash Russian army started to shape up, that Ukraine can't stop Russia from taking territory, or continuing the war. Entirely a question of Russian will or decisions. One can track the day's action and state of the line of contact at various sites online, both pro- and anti-Uke. Most "press" and social media focus is on spectacular/unusual crap that is not really material to the outcome here (small cross-river attacks by either side, drone/missile strikes on value targets or deep in the rear). The key reality is the boring, snails' pace ground war, and that's really only had one trend for a very long time. Posted by: rhomboid at December 08, 2024 12:24 AM (1m82a) 302

One big difference between WW 1.0 and WW 2.0 the allies made no pretense of respecting any patents or intellectual property as the term is known today. Whole mountains of paperwork and blueprints and research notes were scanned and microfiched and more or less stolen, under the terms of what they called “intellectual reparations”.
The Soviets for their part did the same thing, sometimes picking up whole factories and moving them lock stock and barrel. One example of better technology being acquired was in the case of audio recording. The germans had a lot of success with wire recorders and tape, something new. And their microphones were quite good. RCA and Bing Crosby took a big interest in high fidelity, and the post-war improvements from both American and captured technology is quickly evident in just a couple years. By the 1950s recordings were being made that hold up well even today when played on suitable playback. Posted by: Girl On Skates That Day at December 08, 2024 12:29 AM (1meqy) 309
It was Sinwar what killed Syria! Sinwar decided to launch a mad suicide/homicide attack on Israel, in the hopes of dragging everyone in to it. He got Hezbollah in it with him; and first Israel destroyed Hamas, and the they destroyed Hezbollah. It wasn’t apparent that Hezbollah was the group actually providing internal security as Assad’s army fell apart, but that’s what happened.
When Hezbollah’s leadership was destroyed, the rebel groups realized there was nothing left propping Assad up, especially with the Russians too distracted to intervene. The speed and overwhelming Syrian support for this revolution is what made it so fast. Posted by: Tom Servo at December 08, 2024 12:29 AM (W6hoT) 310

Goatweed, no. The army has mostly disintegrated (possibly entirely, by now). Hezb has desperately tried to exit to Lebanon. Not sure what's happened with other key regime-allied militia. Mostly likely they're cutting their own deals with the new sheriff. Several regime army commanders did some version of defect/disarm and leave with safe passage in the past week as the tide rolled south.

During the 1980s Japan Inc. hysteria the one detail that has stuck with me was an interview with a Japanese CEO that ran a company that made rubber O rings and belts. His assertion that the USA would go into decline when it no longer had the ability to make them and lost its institutional memory about all that. He had great insight.
Then came Clinton and the WTO China decision and our blind corporate stupidity that the Chicoms would ever left them take over the Chicom economy; the lessons of the opium wars, it seems, were well learned. The Chicoms have scooped out our guts over the decades. Trump, as I see matters, gets this deeply hence the the tariff strategy to return manufacturing and the related institutional knowledge back to the USA. This is an existential battle; lose this and we become a colony of the Chicoms. We may already be there. Trump's four years are not enough - it is essential that what he starts continues for the decades. This highlights why I think he is mostly jumping a couple generations to people like Vance, Hegseth, and Gabbard to fill the key roles of his administration. Trump's 1st term legacy was SCOTUS and his 2nd is a MAGA that is generational. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram at December 08, 2024 12:56 AM (e+6P0) 338

Tom indeed - it's even worse for Hezb than the probably decisive loss of their land logistics corridor. Syria - host to a massive IRGC presence - was Hezb's training and coordination heartland. Rebels apparently granted some safe passage for some IRGC elements to vamoose, but there's little doubt ending Iranian influence (too weak a word - Syria had become a proxy in every sense of the word) is a central rebel policy.

Posting with the IBM Thinkpad T43 again. Just spent an hour building the 12 volt power supply into a minibox. Put fuses on both the 120 volt AC line, and the 12 volts out, so should be safe to use. I will donate this rig to JT if Ben Had tells me he has wifi at his facility, and if nobody else comes up with something newer and better. It's running Linux Mint 18.0, which is "end of life", and no longer supported, but their newer versions don't support a 32-bit machine. It works to read and post on AOS, what else does it need to do?

True story: In college, I was in the library working on some paper and took a break. I was at a carrel so looked at the shelf. Found a LIFE mag from '56. It had black and white photos of the Olympic water polo match between Russia and Hungary where "the pool ran red with blood." They did succeed in cutting into and rescuing some number of crew from the Utah. Had to abandon many more. Study and read of the relays of torch operators, the poison fumes from the cutting and the expenditures of Oxy/Acetylene supplies. And that was just ONE ship. Cutting though a battleship's bottom, even below the armor belt, was not a task lightly undertaken. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 08, 2024 02:38 AM (Xo+UM) 429

Sad, sad, sad... Posted by: JQ at December 08, 2024 02:33 AM (YoCnN) Well, there had to be air pockets, or the trapped sailors (mostly engine room hands?) would not be alive to tap. To do it right, you would have to build an air lock, say a box like a phone booth, and secure it to the hull with an airtight seal. Then cut through the hull inside the box, so the air bubble inside the hull cannot escape and make all the trapped crewmen drown. This sort of rescue has been done. So, as I understand matters, we have a fellow Moron in a tough spot. How about this. I have a Surface Go 2 with a keyboard in mint shape worth about $200.00. I would donate that under two conditions:
1) Somebody ponies up for a charger. We can work together on figuring that one out and getting it to BenHad. 2) That a few of you pay forward collectively a matching amount of kindness to people that have need. A giving tree: *boom*. A neighbor in need: *boom*. Your imagination: *boom*. My bank account: *BOOM BOOM BOOM*. I will consider this accomplished once I fulfill my commitment. Get my drift here? I am not big on contributing to standard charities - I pick my battles so to speak and this is one I would do in a second. So you know I am serious last year I bought the big wish list Christmas gifts for a couple single mom's kids. Other years, it is other things. Help me out. She could have felt around with her foot (keeping her head in the air pocket) and found the open door, and then made the decision to grab a deep breath, push down, and swim out the door opening. Either she was unconscious, or totally in panic mode, and unable to think her way out her predicament. Teddy got out. If he had not been a scumbag, he could have gone back and rescued her. This video is about the discovery of human foot prints at White Sands National Park, some 45 minutes from where I live, and the counter evidence that the breathless news reports that they show humas arrived in North American thousands of years earlier than is understood might be somewhat premature. Plus some claims that they were made by big foot which I found to be utterly true. I am not sure where this leaves Australia but I am feeling all sporty that they deserve being stuck with Perth.

"I do recall roller skating rinks. Used to be a local one I would go too occasionally. It's gone now but the building is still used. It's a farmers' market now. Some fine local Western PA cuisine is in there. I frequent it a lot when I visit up there."
When I was growing up in 1960s-era Chicago, there was a popular roller-skating rink called "Rainbow", on north Clark street. Decades later, when it was torn down, authorities discovered that someone - presumably the Mob - had buried the corpses of some of their victims in the crawlspace under the rink. We had no idea what we were skating over, of course. Posted by: Nemo at December 08, 2024 08:13 AM (S6ArX) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.0828 seconds. |
