Good evening, Horde. Welcome to the ONT: Low Expectation, Pinch Hitter Edition. The always awesome TRex Hobby Thread the other day rolled my brain embers around a bit. I haven’t written in years, and this may be a reminder why, so here is your “give it a twirl” filler ONT. I eagerly await my prestigious 7th-place participation ribbon.

Wistful memories of Christmas lists. Over-the-shoe roller skates that didn’t get much use as I lived on a gravel road. How about you, Horde? What was on your list as a little?

At least they still have their hair. The self-indulgent, network media remains in Denial Status, continuing to play act as if their voice still matters. While they retain some reach – albeit to a microscopic and shrinking audience - they no longer convey a relevant message. I am enjoying their ramped up pissiness and obliviousness to being on the wrong side of history. I suspect the behind the scenes whispers will come in curdled and quick when the money dries up as the masses no longer wobble and quiver and advertisers close their checkbooks.

I received this book as a gift after my father passed away. It's filled with writing prompts—some a bit repetitive—but overall, it offers a great format and tool for sharing random stories, family history, and anything else a parent might find useful or fun. I read through it twice before starting to journal. In total, it took about 18 months to complete before giving it back to the little ones. Highly recommend!

I do recall roller skating rinks. Used to be a local one I would go too occasionally. It's gone now but the building is still used. It's a farmers' market now. Some fine local Western PA cuisine is in there. I frequent it a lot when I visit up there.

70 We used to have a sorority exchange that we held at the roller rink . The first 45 minutes to an hour it was nice laid back couples skating , groups of girls laughing and skating with each other ,etc.

Then my frat brothers had to ruin it by turning the exchange party into a roller derby party . The girls hated it as I did because girls !! But bros before hoes and I could not resist joining in.

Big bro & I had to take turns using Mom's old metal rollerskates-- the kind you tighten with a key-- and they always rattled loose while skating. Street was too rough, so we stayed on the sidewalks.

No broken wrists, but plenty of skinned knees and palms!

84 My boys had "Heelies " when they were in grade school. They were tennis shoes with a single, wide rubber wheel on the heel. They would run on the balls of their feet, the heels down and toes up and they would glide around. Costco was a favorite spot because the cement floors were so smooth. We would go to the empty aisles and they would have a blast until an employee would frown and make them stop.

As a young'n middle of the last century, I tried on the skates that clamped on my PF Flyers. Once. Didn't go far. I think they didn't stay on well. And I'm fond of modes of transport that include brakes.

Fast forward to early this century, and I and the three kids all got in-line boots. I was surprised to find I mastered them immediately. Some experience water- and snow-skiing probably helped.

We enjoyed going to the park (in town, not on our country driveway) and skating around and around… until that day…

I threw myself off the path, trying to land on my butt with feet out front, but instead flipped over head-first and cracked my head on a rock. Only time I was ever glad I was wearing a helmet! I actually blanked out for a moment.

Third kid was at the top of the hill, certain he had just seen most of his family wiped out.

Fortunately, I was the only one injured. I walked down and found one kid delighted to have successfully made the turn, and the other, who had screamed, had merely fallen safely after turning.

I never went skating again.

Daisy BB guns are no longer a prized Christmas gift. I can't tell you how many toy weapons I had, from metal cap-shooting cowboy pistols, complete with holster, to a heavy wood and metal-barrelled WWII-style rifle that had some heft. I also had all kinds of toy soldiers from The Civil War to the American West to WWII, both Kraut and Jap sets. Built model airplanes and one ship (which got 'sunk' with firecrackers). Had an original GI Joe, with tripod machine gun and a Jeep. Boys not receiving such toys does have an effect on our military, and not a good one.

Also, Christina Hoff Summers says boys are being taught in our schools to be girls, not boys, as girls are easier to teach. That's another problem.

Really there's a war on boys/men at every turn. Not the nanny-fucking kind of 'men', either. They're the {ahem} epitome of masculinity.

It only took Obama and Clinton two months to turn Gaddafi from friend to foe...and then Obama comes out and compares the rebel protestors in Libya to US Revolutionary War heroes. My sons' Catholic elementary school went full-on girl power around the time the older one was in 5th grade. Short of pulling them out (which a lot of parents did) there wasn't much you could do.

My counter was to send them to an all-boys high school that focused on turning boys into young men. It was money well spent.

253 I can’t find good Mexican Oregano, maybe they switched to growing weed or something. Even the fancy spice houses just have the leaves, kinda musty and stale. The good stuff should be bright green and really strong. It was one of those few some spices that don’t go stale.

What do you guys do for Chili powder? I notice that it does go stale, or at least gets kinda weak/off. Fresh Ancho and good chili gives a wonderful color too. Red, not Dead.

Jensen still has a website with lots of cool stuff. When I wrote to them, upon inquiry as to a replacement glass window availability for a #75, they sent that, and they sent a box full of parts and accouterments and gee-gaws for mine. “Take what you want and send a check” and of course I bought everything. A little Penzoil oiler, fuel tray, power take off pulley, etc.

I think Distilled water is best for these. Esbit tablets are the easiest fuel to use as well. These can be tough to find.

Its not perfect, and if you don't know the history beforehand it may be hard to follow cause it goes really fast from Pearl to Midway and touches on everything Navy related, and I seriously doubt the real Dick Best was anything like the movie Dick Best but the visuals are awesome and as far as big scale war movies go it is the most accurate I have seen although of course you can pick holes in it. One of my all time favorites and a really good example of what could be done with modern CGI if there was only a market for depicting actual history rather than the actions of comic book characters.

I lived one block from the Mecca so that is where I went. I only went to the 5 Spot for special occasions like Christmas Eve dinner. My last meal in Seattle was the the Mecca. I paid the cook $25.00, in addition to the meal, to make me perfect dive bar meal. I was not disappointed though it might have been better if I didn't get him hammered over at TS McHugh's before and during his shift (he would sneak over from the Mecca for a double whiskey).

My Dad knew all the boat teams and because he was a machinist he used to make custom parts for all the teams. Over the years, as a kid, I got to meet all the crew chiefs. In the 1980s my Dad and Chuck Hickling, the last great solo builder and driver, hung out together all the time. The last year that Hickling drove I was part of the pit crew. After that Hickling and I would have knock out Thanksgiving fights because he was a complete asshole when he got drunk.

Just look at two popular consumer tech items of the era: automobiles and radio sets. USA had many brands of cars, and the cheaper ones were affordable to nearly anyone with a steady job. Also, many, many brands of radio sets, consoles, table models, portables, ranging in price from very cheap to extremely expensive. Germany had several brands of luxury cars, but practically nothing affordable for the wage-earner, and much the same thing applied for radios. The Nazis introduced cheap cars (the VW) and cheap radios. Few VW cars ever got to their intended market, but the "Empfanger" radios sold in the many thousands.

The key reality is the boring, snails' pace ground war, and that's really only had one trend for a very long time.

I think we grew up together with the exception I built my first skateboard with a total lack of parental supervision let alone knowledge. Looking back I think there was a de-facto policy: if I wasn't screaming and/or bleeding that needed intervention I was pretty much allowed to free range with trying to kill myself. We went to Grand Teton and Yellowstone and continued east across Wyoming and South Dakota all the way thru to Sioux Falls, south Omaha and then home via Denver and the Rockies and I-15 south thru 'Vegas, baby!'.

413 Posting with the IBM Thinkpad T43 again. Just spent an hour building the 12 volt power supply into a minibox. Put fuses on both the 120 volt AC line, and the 12 volts out, so should be safe to use. I will donate this rig to JT if Ben Had tells me he has wifi at his facility, and if nobody else comes up with something newer and better. It's running Linux Mint 18.0, which is "end of life", and no longer supported, but their newer versions don't support a 32-bit machine. It works to read and post on AOS, what else does it need to do?

True story: In college, I was in the library working on some paper and took a break. I was at a carrel so looked at the shelf. Found a LIFE mag from '56. It had black and white photos of the Olympic water polo match between Russia and Hungary where "the pool ran red with blood." It was weird randomly finding that issue but personally important for some reason. Solidified my commie hatred, too. But the nuns got me on that road early in life.

They got some out who weren't submerged. But with the sunken ships, there was simply no rescue. I can imagine, if on guard duty, the hammer pings slowly dying out would haunt you.

They did succeed in cutting into and rescuing some number of crew from the Utah. Had to abandon many more.

Study and read of the relays of torch operators, the poison fumes from the cutting and the expenditures of Oxy/Acetylene supplies.

And that was just ONE ship.

Cutting though a battleship's bottom, even below the armor belt, was not a task lightly undertaken.

Well, there had to be air pockets, or the trapped sailors (mostly engine room hands?) would not be alive to tap. To do it right, you would have to build an air lock, say a box like a phone booth, and secure it to the hull with an airtight seal. Then cut through the hull inside the box, so the air bubble inside the hull cannot escape and make all the trapped crewmen drown.

This sort of rescue has been done.

Did they ever determine if she even tried to escape? I think the front door of the car was open. She could have felt around with her foot (keeping her head in the air pocket) and found the open door, and then made the decision to grab a deep breath, push down, and swim out the door opening. Either she was unconscious, or totally in panic mode, and unable to think her way out her predicament.

Teddy got out. If he had not been a scumbag, he could have gone back and rescued her.

460 There was an excellent one in Springfield, OR. Skate World. It had a brand-new blue floor (fiberglass?) that was sooo smoooth, it was difficult to go slow, LOL.

Now the old Skate World building in Springfield has been made over into the "praise and worship" style Joy Church. Wonder if they still have the disco ball?

Yes must be our ages, I was born in 55. I had no nuns involved but my Dad was raised on a farm. In 64 when we lived in a Democratic neighborhood he proudly put up an AuH2O sign.

469 This video is about the discovery of human foot prints at White Sands National Park, some 45 minutes from where I live, and the counter evidence that the breathless news reports that they show humas arrived in North American thousands of years earlier than is understood might be somewhat premature. Plus some claims that they were made by big foot which I found to be utterly true. I am not sure where this leaves Australia but I am feeling all sporty that they deserve being stuck with Perth.

When I was growing up in 1960s-era Chicago, there was a popular roller-skating rink called "Rainbow", on north Clark street. Decades later, when it was torn down, authorities discovered that someone - presumably the Mob - had buried the corpses of some of their victims in the crawlspace under the rink. We had no idea what we were skating over, of course.
