I grew up in an old house where at night I could hear the mice chasing each other from on wall to another. All night the patter of little feet. Now my newer house doesn't have any creatures stirring. I guess its the walls are full of something, or they don't like me.

I finally bought a Beelink mini-PC. A Beelink Mini PC AMD Ryzen 7 5800H. It's up and running, fairly easy to set up. The downside? I ordered it with Linux Ubuntu OS. It came with Win11 Pro. Installing Linux on it is easy enough but I'll give Win11 Pro a spin. I suspect I'll be putting Linux on it in the next week or two.

Cats can hear those wall mice from the other side of a huge barn. I've watched my cats reacting to, what is noiseless to my ear, drops of water falling a couple of inches from a container to a sloping porcelain surface (sink).

Posted by: Puddleglum, I think you'll find that Windows 11 is mostly Windows 10 except for the parts they moved around so the graphic artists who make icons could justify their salaries. The two things that really annoyed everybody right out of the gate was they trashed the start menu and taskbar. Since the initial Windows 11 release they've added folders in the top level start menu area which solves many problems and they brought back a few essential features to the taskbar so mostly it behaves just like Windows 10. I really find it to be mostly a drama-free Windows experience which may or may not be a problem depending on your your preferences. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram at December 05, 2024 05:39 AM (vO42M) 68

Posted by: fd All this is becoming far more complicated. Andrew Cunningham over at Ars Technica has fussed around with this extensively and it's becoming trickier to pull off. One of the big downsides is if you get a major service pack release, you basically have to reinstall the entire OS and all your applications. So while yes, you can install Windows 11 on a machine without a TPM 2.0. I think you'll find it to be a major pain of the ass over time. Posted by: Biden's Dog Microsoft has announced extended support for Windows 10 after October October 2025. I believe consumers can get that in the $30 to $60 for a year range. I don't think exact prices have been announced yet. Businesses are still able to get multiple years. I think I'm going to take advantage of this for my Windows 10 machine so I can milk another year out of it at which time it will be almost 10 years old. At some point you just replace these things right? 10 years is a good run. So yes, while I'm annoyed that Microsoft for their goofy restrictions as a practical matter many of the machines that can't directly upgrade are beginning to age out. WTH? I have never encountered a problem with pinning anything on the task bar or showing up in the start menu. On occasion a task bar or start menu icon will get confused and disappear and then I have to go out and reinstall that. All software products make design choices that either expand or limit what you can do. I stay away from Apple products because they are so locked down and I stay away from Linux because I don't want to fuss around in the machine at that level. The visceral passion computing devices elicit from people is really interesting to me. I get it; they are such integral parts of our lives anymore that what we use and how we use them become a reflection of who we are as people. I can assure you when I was putting floppy disks into a machine to get it to run many years ago that never was on my mind. What I can say, setting aside our biases and preferences, is the machines and software we have today coupled to the internet has to be one of the most spectacular societal and technological changes to ever hit human society. I also believe that we're just getting started and that the next hundred years are going to be mind-blowing. To have essentially lived my entire adult life in this incredible period of time has been a hoot and I'm most grateful that I was blessed with this.

My first experience in San Francisco was in 1971 when a friend and I were hitchhiking down the West Coast during my quasi hippie/ Jack Kerouac period. When I got downtown and saw the city hall building I realized how hicktown Seattle was at that time. I was also shocked that how many people were sleeping on the sidewalk in seemingly high as hell. But went with building a full PC instead, because I wanted to be able to upgrade and use a real graphics card instead of relying on an iGPU if I wanted to play games. They are still selling Ryzen 7000 series stuff but the also sell models with the new Ryzen AI 300 series chips that are out now, but pricier. Beelink probably has a few, as well. >Also, support for Windows 10 will end next year
It's a ten year old consumer OS. Let it go. Also, I just installed Win 11 Pro on a pair of Lenovo Think* from 2017 and it went fine. The Windows 11 hate is just Windows 8 all over again. >the VPN client my company uses cannot be pinned For inexplicable reasons, enterprise VPN clients are universally written by people who have never seen a Windows system, much less coded for one. @176/Daniel Ream: "The Windows 11 hate is just Windows 8 all over again. "
For 8 it was trying to force a UI that was built for a tablet interface on desktop users. Steve Ballmer got rightfully panned for this (and the shrieking monkeyboy dance at the beginning of a conference that leaked onto YouTube really didn't help him either.) For 11 it's Recall, advertising, AI, and the attitude of "We can spy on you and we can use everything on your computer, and we'll force it all into the cloud." No you shitweasels, copyright is a thing, and you can't just EULA your way around it. So maybe the same user hatred, but for all new reasons. The ONLY reason I have Windows 10 on a separate box is tax software. I turn that thing on once a year, do hours and hours of updates, install the new version of the software, do my taxes, submit them, and then it gets turned off, unplugged, and goes back on the storage shelf for another year. Linux Mint can do major updates in 10 minutes or less. Microsoft can take hours without any sign of what it's doing (or not doing) and with barely any drive activity showing on the Drive LED on the front of the computer. Microsoft has lost the plot. @179:
I agree. Linux Mint is a joy to use - closest Microsoft analogy would be Windows 7, which IMO was Windows' high point. Cinnamon is an excellent DE, and IMO better even than Win 7. You could put it on grandma's machine and she should keep right on trucking. Everybody, but particularly conservatives should be flocking to LM, for multiple reasons (far less spying, free, far less malware, free, deprives the evil Dr. Gates of funds, did I mention free...?). But yes, you'll probably have to keep Win 10 on some old box for a couple of minor things. Tax software is a good example, tho if you're willing to do it browser based (not an endorsement) then you can get around that. But there's also some smaller hardware devices where the damn manufacturers are still stuck on Windows drivers only.
Actually in my last 3 years I only *had* to resort to Windows for one purpose - taking PearsonVue online exams. Hilariously, that included my Linux+ certification. Yes, I could not take the Linux online exam on Linux, I had to take it on Windows. Posted by: Qwinn at December 05, 2024 08:12 AM (I3XdN) 182
Hmm, it could just be a political play, but the pardons for chiffon and Cheney make me think 'depriving civil rights under color of law'- or whatever it is called, I am not a lawyer.

@180 & 181/Qwinn: I converted both my mother and my wife from Windows XP straight to Linux Mint (I believe it was version 18 at the time). I've got them on 20.3 currently, and it's running absolutely rock solid for them. They use Firefox, Thunderbird for mail, LibreOffice for documents, and SMPlayer for multi-media. Their needs are met and I tweak anything either of them needs from an admin perspective.
Tax filing via a browser: Not unless there's literally no other choice, and even then, I'd probably just start paying a tax preparation service to do my taxes every year if that were the case. Had to take your Linux exam on a Windows computer: I hope you shared that with the company you were paying for your Linux certification course. That's a ... rather bad look on them. *laughs* Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at December 05, 2024 09:30 AM (O7YUW) 184
