Otterly Cute Cafe

homealoneseaotters.jpg

You probably don't know this, because you're not Sea Otter Experts like I am (and nurse ratchet is), but sea otters are compulsive fans the Home Alone franchise.

Male sea otter asks humans for help, because his girl is stuck in a neck by the dock. The couple are reunited!

Sea otter check-up.

Pup squeals as his mom grooms him.

Meanwhile, here's an evil river otter bringing suffering and hatred to the world.

I think the difference is that river otters have shorter hair which appears smoother and better groomed, whereas sea otters have fluffy, spiky, unruly bed-head type hair.

And of course, river otters are evil. For some reason.

Grooming the chinchilla, if you'll pardon my French.

Cute dogs greet their master.

Separation anxiety.

ICYMI: Woodcutter's apprentice is a raven.

Even robots are worn out by Friday.

We knew that Her Majesty's car would not pass the emissions test and could not have the registration renewed so long as the Check Engine light was on.

The light went out while she was driving this morning, so she went in and had it tested. It passed. So the entire difference between Pass and Fail was whether the Check Engine light was on. Is this stupid or what?

70 >>Clearing the check engine light is why I got a code scanner. Thing is worth it's weight in gold

A few ago I was heading to the airport at 0 dark 30 when the check engine light came on. Made it to the airport and then back home after the trip. I went to the local NAPA to get it decoded and it the scanner said I had a bad thermostat and the warning light was "permanent" meaning it wouldn't go off until the thermostat was fixed and someone who knew what they were doing reset the computer.

Made an appointment to get it fixed at my local mechanic. He buys the part and the day before the appointment the light goes off. I didn't want to leave the guy hanging so I had him change the thermostat anyway. He then tells me that the computer has no record of a fault occurring.

I miss simple cars.

Something will fail in the near future, but the car ran a self-test and didn't find the issue, so it cleared the light. They don't check for stored codes, only if there are any issues. And the CE light won't necessarily fail it, unless it's an emissions failure. Then, you're screwed.
Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at December 06, 2024 07:57 PM (Zz0t1)

I've just picked up a fault in the AE35 emissions unit. It's going to go 100% failure in 72 hours.

There isn't one. Or if there is, it also supports some essential function, like the ECM. The emissions test stations usually plug into the car's diagnostic connector, to read trouble codes, so even if the lamp itself were disabled, the underlying code would be there. Best work-around? If your car has a problem that causes it to set a code after a few hours of driving, buy a cheap code reader, and use it to clear all the codes 5 minutes before entering the test station. And pick a time when you won't have a long wait.

Spoiler alert: If the check engine light is yellow and it's not flashing, it's emissions related.

I'm dealing with one in an older vehicle right now that is likely the charcoal canister at the gas filler neck (emissions, btw), but it's an expensive fix to chase and I don't want to drop the tank or raise the bed. I assume shops can pinpoint it a bit better, but it's all just guesswork at the shadetree level.

227 The last Check Engine light I got, I had AutoZone readout the codes for me and then looked up the code numbers.

Motor was down on power and it idled rough (er than normal).

Codes were pointing to a vacuum line problem though it acted similar to a coil malfunction. I have had to replace 6 of the 8 coils over the 20+ years and 240K+ miles.

So anyways, my mechanic takes it in and calls me to say the vacuum lines have disintegrated due to age and high mileage. Cost to replace was less than 1/3 of the cost of a new coil. Not a bad outcome, all things considered.

Yes. Usually the code reader will report a code, or series of codes. The code numbers are mostly standardized across makes, too.

Another thing to look for: broken or cracked vacuum hoses under the hood, and going to/from the evaporative emissions charcoal canister, if it is located elsewhere. Rubber hoses can get weathered and crack, and the molded nylon "hard lines" can become brittle and snap. Many of these can fail without any observed loss of performance, but just one can screw up evap emissions system, and throw a code. Just a simple eyeball inspection, and run your hands over them.

269 186 My check engine light started displaying a while back. Took the vehicle to AutoZone first. Really nice dude plugged in and said "could be almost anything but emissions control is most likely the culprit". I then took it to the dealership. Same diagnoses. They recommended having the entire system replaced. Screw that...I don't have that kind of cash on hand. Meanwhile, I'm certainly not going to be able to pass the godforsaken e-check. The thing that pisses me off most, is that the vehicle has been running just fine.

Posted by: Notorious BFD at December 06, 2024 08:37 PM (mH6SG)

Look for an OBD2 scanner on Amazon. There are two kinds. Some come with an actual display readout. Others are just a module you plug into the OBD2 port and connect to a phone app via blutooth.

The scanner will give you a code. You can look it up on the internet to find out more about it and what others with your model car ran into.

It will also let you reset any fault codes. However, you can't pass an inspection that way. Put like 50 miles on the car so it has history. If still clear with no faults, you should be able to pass the test. The one I bought was $20 and I use a free app.

They have him on video throwing the bottle away, so they know which trash can. Now, they probably have fingerprints, which they can compare to the bottle.

Some guy on FOX earlier was talking about that. You see in the security video touching a door handle. Yeah, they'll be a bunch of other random prints on that door handle and others, but if match what you find on the water bottle.

You know he stayed in this room over here, apart from the Stabucks, touched this way over here, and now this water bottle in the trash. You determine his prints that way.

I was listening to some former NYPD Inspector FOX has on -- I liked him, and first saw him on Gutfled.

He says that the trope of a professional hitman is mostly a Hollywood creation. Contract killing is a thing, but it ain't like the Hollywood trope. You know, the smooth, suave, ruthless killer type who never makes mistakes.

He said if it was a real hitman, you'd never know it.
