The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

Outlook-image009.J.jpg

Good morning Horde. The first Saturday of December. Are you preparing for the Holiday? If so, you are in my prayers.

An annual event at Casa Misanthrope is The Fabulous making yours truly several fruit cakes.

Which reminds me, I'm not the only one who likes brandied fruit cake.

*****

Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in New Holstein)

1. This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2. Be nice. Be kind. No jumping on the furniture or Ace's shelving.
3. Running with sharp objects? Almost time for a new deductible, just sayin'
4. Have a nice weekend.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

10/25 – Mental Block requests prayers as his prostate cancer journey transitions from active surveillance to deciding between two treatment options: a prostatectomy or 6 weeks of radiation combined with hormone therapy. Treatment will begin by mid-December.
11/21 Update – Mental Block started six months of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) which stops his body from producing testosterone. He starts radiation therapy on 12/4, which will be 5 days per week for 6 weeks.

10/26 – Teresa in Fort Worth asked for prayers. She got some troubling and totally unexpected medical news on 10/25, and is being referred to an oncologist to see where she goes from here. She said she is freaking out because this wasn’t even on the radar. It was found while being tested for something completely unrelated.
11/8 Update - It turned out to be bile duct cancer, which has locally metastasized into the liver. The plan is for 3 rounds of chemo starting after Thanksgiving, and then surgery in February or March. This is a rare cancer (8000 cases/year), and aggressive (5 year survival rate of 2-3%). Teresa plans to fight as hard as she can, but this is the situation. She appreciates the thoughts and prayers.
11/19 Update – She saw the oncologist. Without treatment, she might live 6 months. With chemo and surgery, she might make it 12 months. Maybe longer if she’s lucky. She’s eating all the desserts and buying all the yarn she can in the meantime.
11/23 Update – Teresa will be getting some help at home. An attendant will be coming to the home to take care of Rebecca, and also keep an eye on Teresa. The attendant has been through chemotherapy herself, has worked for the agency for a long time, and was looking for a more permanent placement. She can come 6 days a week, starting the Monday after Thanksgiving. What a blessing for the entire family!

11/8 – Jim in Kalifornia could use prayers. He was scheduled for laparoscopic surgery to clean abscess(es) and add drain.
11/16 Update – Jim was released from the hospital on 11/12. He still has the drain, is on 2 antibiotics and an antifungal for another 12 days. His anti-rejection regimen was reduced to allow him to fight the infection(s), but at a potential risk to the transplanted kidney.
11/23 Update – Jim is hospitalized again, receiving IV fluids, since he still can’t drink more than a few sips of water. He is on stronger antibiotics.
11/26 – Update – Jim is home again.

11/8 – Ron asked for prayers for his mother, who lost her vision and also fell. They are hoping for a medical procedure in the near future to restore (some of) her vision, and that the fall didn’t injure her too badly.

11/9 – SD requested prayers for her husband, whose kidney function is declining. They had a scare when an ultrasound suggested a mass on his right kidney, but thanks be to God, the CT scan said it was no mass, just an irregularly rotated lobe of his kidney. He sees a nephrologist on 12/3.

11/9 – tbodie Lurker sent thanks for the prayers. Tbodie had follow-up surgery on 11/6, and it went well.

11/10 – Farmer asked for prayers for Julie, who went to ER and almost died. She had “septic shock with multi organ failure secondary to perforated gastric ulcer with kidney and liver failure”.
11/16 Update – Julie was taken off the ventilator for 3 hours. Her eyes were open and got real wide when she saw him. So she is still there and coming back, slowly but surely.

11/13 – NR Pax requests prayers for his friend’s family. They have to sell their home and move because the local drug dealers have been making escalating threats to them.

11/13 – R asked for prayers for his mother. She lost her vision and she fell. They are hopeful that a medical procedure will soon restore some of her vision, and that the fall did not injure her too badly.

11/13 – Nightwatch needs prayers. His sister Kathleen suffered a massive stroke and is in the ICU. This news was given to him 2 hours after he got home from his wife’s aunt’s burial, and a week after the untimely passing of his nephew at age 34.

11/15 – Pooky’s Girl asked for prayers for Lil Pooky’s possible abdominal hernia.
11/19 Update – His hernia is pretty minor and can be fixed laparoscopically with a single stitch. Surgery will be in mid-January. Please pray that Lil Pooky will have minimal discomfort until then.

11/15 – Notorious BFD asked for prayers from those so inclined, after Notorious BFD’s brother-in-law passed away unexpectedly.

11/23 – Screaming in Digital gave a mom update, and sent thanks for the prayers. Mom had to go to ER last week due to unusual confusion and weakness. It was a UTI. Thankfully she didn’t need a transfusion for anemia and there were no injuries from her recent fall. She is also getting set up for home health services.

11/23 – Jewells sent an update. She has been taking ivermectin for 2 weeks, and the only side effect is extreme fatigue.

11/30 – Tonypete offered prayers of thanksgiving - #4 son and his wife have announced the (estimated) May arrival of their first baby. They are all so thrilled.

11/30 – PabloD asked for prayers. He is currently on a two-week heart monitor and waiting for more tests. They are not sure what’s wrong. He is praying for faborable results, or at least a clear answer as to what the problem may be.

11/30 – DiddlySquat requested prayers. After doing his normal weighted leg lifts, his foot went numb, with pain down his calf. He’s had constant pain and many sleepless nights for the last 6 weeks. He’s finally scheduled for a nerve test EMG.

11/30 – Megthered asked for prayers for her son-in-law. He had stepped on a nail, and it became infected. They took him to the hospital, and they did surgery to try and save his foot.

11/30 – W offered the following prayer, as a follow up on the election:
“Almighty and most merciful father, we thank thee for the great blessing you have heaped on the citizens of the United States. We thank the Lord for protecting President Trump from the assassin’s bullet. We thank the Lord for providing a fair and just election, and for the great electoral victory which you have granted us. We offer thanks for your guidance during the electoral contest, and humbly beseech thee to continue providing each of us and our leaders with courage and guidance so that we might crush the wickedness of the swamp and establish justice and moral rectitude in the United States.”

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

10 Prayers up for those that have asked us for them in the payer list;
Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and
Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking for help in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God!

Prayers up even for all "our" politicians who have decided that their 10% graft and power are still far more desirable than their honor or integrity, may they see the error of their ways and repent!

And lastly, prayers up for our future President Trump, keep him safe from harm and may the many forces of corruption and evil arrayed against both him and our country be made ineffective and come to naught!

35 It is absolutely essential in this season of joy that we remember to trust in God, and understand that this is a spiritual conflict, not a materialistic one. In this time, the unseen have revealed themselves in a way I never imagined possible. Open displays of satanic symbols by the ruling class, blatant exploitation of children - who ever thought it would happen?

Getting fixated on personalities or lawsuits and such is exactly what the Enemy wants. Instead of following up our victory, the devil wants us to squabble and fight amongst ourselves. We must not fall into the trap, but instead press home our advance with growing confidence and faith. (con't)

Monday is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, transferred from Sunday. It's a Holy Day of Obligation unless your diocese has dispensed you from it. Our Lady is the Patroness of the United States, by the way.

39 Look at how much the world has transformed! The frickin' University of Michigan, bastion of wokeness, the Berkeley of the Midwest, has utterly repudiated DEI statements, declaring them incompatible with the principles of free speech and free inquiry.

Just did it, out of the blue (heh).

The point is that the tide has shifted, and we all can feel it. We feel a lightness, a happiness, a joy that we have missed.

Embrace it, expand your prayer life, look at new devotions, maybe go to an extra service. Treat Monday as a Holy Day of Obligation (I will be, silly bishops).

44 And yes, we must fight, fight them on every front. Not one step back, everyone to the front. Hit them on every side, make their every move an agony, their every waking moment one of fear of the Lord.

Look at all them, the entire establishment in Washington now begging for pardons. Has there ever been a more transparent display of guilt? But Biden's autopen won't save them from the fire that awaits. Even as we press home our assaults, we must remember we are called to convert, not destroy. Repent, be saved, and join the Body of Christ.

This must be our message. All these celebrities finding God may be a scam, but sometimes scams become the truth, and when they find praise and welcome, and frankly how much kinder Christians are than their wokescold fans, the conversion will become sincere.

December 8th is the usual day of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is on Sunday this year. If I've got this right, ordinarily attendance at one Mass would suffice. But Sundays in Advent are also Feasts of the 1st Class and Rome has said we can't have two 1st Class Feasts on the same day and so Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday and the obligation remains.

However, your bishop can dispense the faithful in his diocese from the obligation. Galveston-Houston has done so, but other dioceses have not. I'm going anyway.

Thinking about my wife's father, who 83 years ago today had a front row seat to history, on board the U.S.S. Nevada at Pearl Harbor.

68 We remember Pearl Harbor because it was a pivotal moment in the modern history of America and the world. How America responded to Pearl Harbor would determine the outcome of the Second World War. But more than that, it would determine the fate of a dream that freedom and liberty could endure in this world. It was a collision, not of two navies or two countries, but of two ideas. On one side, a nation in the midst of an era of repression and nationalist aggression. On the other, an idea, not even two centuries old, that people should be free and able to govern themselves.

I try to do that as well. I love the daily Masses once school is in session. The kids belting out the hymns is the best thing ever. Also, watching the general melee during the sign of peace cracks me up.

My granddaughter is now in the parish preschool, so I'm going to try to find her and wave on Monday.

She is so amazing. We got out the nativity and as we set out the figures she said "Oh! There's Baby Jesus! I love him so much!"

I actually welcome mass pardons. A mass admission of guilt for crimes that would have been hard to obtain convictions on.

And then a Truth Commission to force out the details under penalties of perjury. Break the wall of silence. I'd focus on J6 with focus on the Grandmas and Tourists who were thrown into Nancy's Gulag Archipelago.

It will break the Leftie Ds for a generation. Let us pray.

The lovely Mrs. is a daily Mass attendee and I've been trying to do that as well. Daily Mass attendees fill about half the church and the average age is in the late 70s so it's pretty crazy. These old ladies will get out of their pews or cross the aisle to hug and kiss everyone.

I had that happen at my old house. Chest freezer would lose power do to a short in the power line (which ultimately had to be replaced).

I got a chest freezer last fall and put it in the basement, so that I can keep an eye on it and if it fails, its in the coolest, most insulated part of the house.

We dip into it frequently, so that also mitigates the danger, but you never know.

Pro tip for those thinking about getting one: fill up the empty spaces with water jugs, which make it run less and act as emergency cooling when you lose power.

December was interesting, because for the band concert, we played Hannukah carols and in art class we made dreidels.

I didn't know I was part Jewish, or I probably would have paid more attention to it. Back then, Halloween was secular, and even the Jewish kids had costume parties and gave out candy.

Alas, the wokescolds in my home town last year declared Halloween to be insufficiently inclusive, which is why the grandkids are going to Catholic school.

The interesting thing about those studies is the action fenbenzadol and related molecules have. In lice and worms it blocks the absorption of sugars (sort of, it is more complicated than that but I failed biochem 103) and starves them to death. In the models, the cancer cells operate on glucose (mostly and it depends) so they are also starved.

For one of the history classes in high school we visited the local synagogue, and they had these black "back up" yarmulkes in the lobby, which the guys put on so we could do the tour. I stuck mine in my backpack and sometime later in my radio production class I pulled it out and put it on.

That was the day we were doing a "package" show, where we had to include a script and the vinyl, wrap it all up and then someone else would perform it. So being an obnoxious senior I loudly asked, what was acceptable, a bag, or what?

The student assistant said: "Wrap it like a Christmas present!"

The teacher looked at me and then back at him and said: "Dave, can't you see he's Jewish?!"

The Jewish kid next to me almost died laughing.

Truth be told, that spring I grew out my hair and was testing to see what kind of a beard I could sustain, so when I put it on, I looked pretty ultra-Orthodox.

I don't know, I think a lot of people are just getting worn out with being angry and hating on themselves and their country. Trump's plan for a massive patriotic party in 2026 sounds awesome.

I think most of the people pushing DEI hate it just like we do, but they're too afraid to do anything. The fact that an uber-liberal college like Michigan would drop it because the faculty requested it speaks volumes.

Michigan State's new president is a dude with no pronouns in his bio and at the start of the fall semester was pushing a civility initiative about having respectful discussions and debates and putting your feelings aside, so that was even before Trump won.

The tide is clearly turning.

Reminds me of the I Love Lucy episode when the Ricardo's and the Mertz's took a road trip to Hollywood for Ricky's screen test/movie. Lucy was invited to model in a fashion show, but she fell asleep by the pool and was painfully sunburned. The Don Loper original she had to wear at least looked like burlap and she was very uncomfortable.

In my high school class around 1970, was a cute hippie chick named Lulu Ballantine. She wore a burlap minidress made from a flour sack. Long and leggy, she looked good.

223 Homemade fruitcake is so much better than storebought. I’ve been baking them ever since I was intrigued by a recipe that called for apricots and almonds and light raisins. There’s so many variations too. This year will be chocolate fruitcake with dried figs and other goodies. All of them doused with brandy, or kirsch, or Grand Marnier, or Kahlua, whichever fits your recipe.

Also a good idea to soak the nuts, raisins, etc. in liquor before you add to batter.

Over the past few years I've been collecting surplus firearms and I've noticed that the Japanese stuff just does not do as well as the German, even though it is much less common. Some of the auctions are really impressive, including papers, flags, swords.

I think a big part of the reason is that the Pacific was not a good fight. It was pretty awful, and the Japanese were so culturally alien and the combat so nasty that when the vets came home, they didn't really have anything positive to remember.

Europe was different. You could go in leave in London, Paris or Naples, you may have even visited the Old Country, taking in famous tourist towns and such. My grandfather spent a weekend in Paris right after the liberation and he always had a twinkle in his eye when he talked about it. In the Pacific you might to to Pearl, or even San Francisco, but it wasn't the same.

[The result was the Germans made a landing, but a cruiser sortie so smashed the German fleet that they had to evacuate the beachead, losing 150,000 troops in the process. Decisive British victory.]

Some of my extended family were in the Pacific, but I never met any of them.

I will say that after writing Walls of Men, I have Strange New Respect for the Japanese because at one point they tried to fight in the Western "Civilized" fashion, but the Chinese didn't really do that, so they went feral.

China actually dynamited the levees holding the Yellow River back, wiping out thousands of villages just to slow the Japanese advance. I mean it worked, and the Japs lost a ton of troops and equipment, but that kind of callousness was not unique in Chinese history.

The Japanese fanaticism is also a bit exaggerated. The troops were told we were savages who would torture them to death, so they fought to the death. This was why the wounded killed themselves. They were totally brainwashed.

I actually drink more Japanese beer than German these days. Had some Asahi last night while watching "You Only Live Twice."

285 230 I encourage people to approach medical advice with a healthy dose of skepticism, whether it comes from a doctor, your grandmother or some rando on an internet comments section or a slick clickbait web headline. Seek knowledge, understanding and wisdom, not validation of what you want the answer to be.

Caveat emptor

This is excellent advice! Thank you muldoon!

The IDF was using captured Kar98ks and flying late model BF 109s for a while. I guess you get used to it.

I would think there would also be an aspect of "you tried to kill us all and failed, now you are gone and repudiated and we are using your stuff for defending ourselves from more irrational hatred"

289 If the movie Raid on Entebbe was accurate, the Israelis used a duplicate of Idi Amin's Mercedes limo. In the movie, the car does not start immediately, and is cursed by (actor?) 'G*ddammed German car'.

292 Hi, Braenyard

Late response. Yes; I am home - only in the hospital from about 6:30 Friday night to 1:00 Saturday morning. I think I will feel better once the antibiotic kicks in, but I plan to be at church tomorrow. I'd hate the miss the 2nd Sunday of Advent. I like have the Advent wreath lite and singing Advent carols. Have a blessed weekend in case you do see this

295 I am forwarding a request for prayer from Sean Dietrich on behalf of Morgan, a sophomore in college who has an illness that is undetermined which has resulted in her spending the last year in the hospital. She was just flown down to a children's hospital in Atlanta to see if any of the doctors there are able to diagnose what ails her. Please say a little prayer for her, as well as for Sean. Both good people.

300 Hey there would you mind sharing which blog platform you're working with?
I'm going to start my own blog in the near future but
I'm having a tough time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.

The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I'm looking
for something unique. P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had
to ask!
