Tech News

  • AMD's fastest CPU, the recently announced 192 core Epyc 9965, just received a 33% price cut. (MSN)

It still costs $10,000, but that's not a bad price for that powerful a chip.

No scores on CPUBenchmark for this chip just yet; the fastest chip they have listed is the 96 core Epyc 9655P.

  • We don't need to fear Skynet. Just mention Jonathan Turley and the whole system will reboot. (Tech Crunch)
Users of the conversational AI platform ChatGPT discovered an interesting phenomenon over the weekend: the popular chatbot refuses to answer questions if asked about a "David Mayer." Asking it to do so causes it to freeze up instantly. Conspiracy theories have ensued - but a more ordinary reason may be at the heart of this strange behavior.
This was circulating on Twitter, but Tech Crunch actually did a bit of digging:
Which brings us back to David Mayer. There is no lawyer, journalist, mayor, or otherwise obviously notable person by that name that anyone could find (with apologies to the many respectable David Mayers out there).

There was, however, a Professor David Mayer, who taught drama and history, specializing in connections between the late Victorian era and early cinema. Mayer died in the summer of 2023, at the age of 94. For years before that, however, the British American academic faced a legal and online issue of having his name associated with a wanted criminal who used it as a pseudonym, to the point where he was unable to travel.

So that's why there are restrictions on ChatGPT disseminating information about these individuals; they're victims of various types of identity fraud. But why does it crash?

Because AI is itself a fraud:
The whole drama is a useful reminder that not only are these AI models not magic, but they are also extra-fancy auto-complete, actively monitored, and interfered with by the companies that make them. Next time you think about getting facts from a chatbot, think about whether it might be better to go straight to the source instead.
ChatGPT behaves like nightmare hodgepodge of nonsense held together by duct tape and an inflated share price, because that's precisely what it is.

  • AMD's upcoming Radeon 8800XT might be dramatically more powerful than the current 7800XT. (WCCFTech)

Claimed numbers put it 45% faster on ray tracing. But 45% faster than the 7900XTX, a much more expensive card.

And it's also claimed to compete on non ray traced gaming with the RTX 4080, another much more expensive card.

But the question of how much the 8800XT itself will cost is open. If it is also a much more expensive card, none of that means anything.

7 Pixy, are you still *here*?

If so, can/will you tell us plainly, what's the deal about Vic not being on the Absent Friends List?

Seems petty, IF it's just a cob thing from the past.

Vic was a beloved and regular commenter, and gave us plenty of news over the years. I have no idea whether he was ever banned, but think probably not...

Can/will you do it? I mean, put his name on the list? Or explain why not?

9 Evening to Pixy and other late toilers, and morning to all the early risers of AoSHQ! It's Tiu's Day again.

My week looks odd. I was busy catching up yesterday, as always after a holiday. Tomorrow p.m. I visit with my doctor and discuss various blood sample readings -- my own, that is. Thurs. evening I have to decide if I want to go to a retirement party being given by the guy who hired me at my previous job twenty-two years ago and whom I've known since. At the end of a long work day, going to a party, even just putting in an appearance, is tough.

17 Intel and Pat Gelsinger being given the sudden heave-ho with the announcement coming a day late:

"There's no word as to the reason. Short notice like this is often for health reasons, but Gelsinger was doing customer visits and photo ops just last week."

Intel's made too many missteps and mistakes during this recovery, and consumer and business faith in their ability to produce a reliable product is down. Their latest CPU release had lackluster performance numbers, so much so that it did less well than a previous release of CPU. It got absolutely shellacked in all of the major tech reviews. Meanwhile, their main competitor (AMD) just keeps pushing forward and making huge leaps and bounds.

At some point Intel's Board of Directors was going to decide that the fish rots from the head, and it was time for a new head because something is fundamentally wrong at their company. They used to be the undisputed king of CPU production; no more.

That point appears to have been on or around November 30.

Anyhow, that's my guess as to why Gelsinger finds himself launched from Intel like a stone from a trebuchet.

46 The Register:
https://is.gd/BpFWE0

"Broadcom loses another big VMware customer: UK fintech cloud Beeks Group, and most of its 20,000 VMs

A massively increased bill was one motive, but customers went cold on Virtzilla, and OpenNebula proved more efficient
"

Broadcom is counting on its biggest customers being unable to move for the next 3 to 5 years, and being able to pay the insane price increase for licenses that they demanded of their customers once they bought up VMWare. A 10x time price increase with more than 10% of your customers staying means increased profits, at least in the short term.

Broadcom's past acquisitions and treatment of products and services indicates that their business model is based off of doing this again. It kills most interest in said product, and over time they bleed customers of it down to almost nothing, but they seem to be counting on finding another popular golden goose in the 3 to 5 year timeframe and strangling it as well.

Now given that I'm desperately clinging to a Broadcom chipset cable modem that works solidly, specifically because three Intel Puma chipset modems have been absolutely and utter hot garbage, I'm ... conflicted now.

There was, however, a Professor David Mayer, who taught drama and history, specializing in connections between the late Victorian era and early cinema.

Now, that's a course I would have liked to take.

But, speaking of AI and such, when I fired up the laptop this morning, there was an offer from google to create an AI chess set. The Egyptian one came out pretty well, but the 'silent movie' version. . .

I probably should have just said 'movies.' In any event, it almost makes me wish I had a 3D printer to make my own bespoke chess pieces.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke

Now THAT would be an interesting topic to have a serious and properly-researched discussion on.

I bet the majority of teachers are, at best, mostly indifferent to ChatGPT. I'd also bet they couldn't tell you that specific name and would just say "AI" when asked. Same as government employees everywhere, so long as it doesn't threaten their pension, they're not going to worry too much about it unless there's documentation requiring it. And then they're still not going to worry too much about it anyway.

It would be neat to know the details about knowledge of a topic from that specific group responsible for that specific thing.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke

Yeah, I suspect 20% of teachers have some awareness of it outside of being required to use university-supplied programs to attempt to detect it being used.

But - same as was mentioned in the "documentation requiring it" point above - if they're not required to have the kids use the software (that the university subscribes to, sets up, and requires), they're probably not using it. Well, unless it threatens a pension.

The student loans check clearing being THE most important thing. If actions are taken to potentially improve academics but also reduce applications and student loan checks, then people might stop applying, and the checks might stop being automatically sent to the universities. That's a risk academia is not willing to take.

Some of my colleagues at work have adopted the deal of putting their pronouns in their email signature lines. Fortunately no one has ever tried to mandate that we all do that. They might well be surprised at the pushback from some quarters.

On the other hand, these people, often Ph.D.s, went all in for the Sniffle Scare and its associated hoaxes. Maybe there would be little pushback.

Chat GPT is a tool. I've used it in the brainstorming phase, and it helped give my brain the kick in the pants it needed to go really inventive places. But anyone using it to write for them is an idiot.

I have a friend that manages 20 something interns, and she says the number of times she's caught interns using ChatGPT to write their analysis or summaries for them is maddening. If it was her decision to make she'd fire them, all she can do is a stern warning.

Larry Correia has a great take on it. ChatGPT is soulless, so it can only mimic human thoughts and speech. If you are using it to write your book for you, you are robbing yourself of the funnest part of making a book, the drafting phase. Instead you skip that and go to editing phase, his least fave part, and you have to edit soulless writing into something that sounds human. Might as well just write the darn thing. Good analysis.

ChatGPT can be viewed as a tool for people over 50 or so because many of us can also put our phones down and not care that much since we knew a "before" time. For people born in the 90s it's not that easy because it's all they've ever known. They've had internet, and then internet connected phones, their entire lives. It's part of their thinking. That's not said lightly, either. It's part of HOW they think. They have to use it, either to figure stuff out, or to have entertainment to relax in order to figure stuff out. If nothing else it at least needs to be nearby and available. If not, that will be the primary focus.

ChatGPT will be similar. It's a novel plaything for us, but for people who know nothing else it will be part of how they think.

That's why I support 2+2 = 5. Damage it at the core level to save our kids.

I look at it the same way that I do about allowing calculators in schools.

Once the device takes over the role of calculating the answer, the mental skills necessary to detect a mistake deteriorate.

Hence cashiers who can not calculate the correct change to give you.

And teenagers who blindly use the device to add two whole numbers, and when there is an entry error, they blindly write down the answer given by the device which is a whole number that is a lesser value than either of the two whole numbers being added.
