84 Ole Miss won the Egg Bowl yesterday, so there's that to be grateful for, at least for a few of us. Many cowbells have been set aside in grief, while "Hotty Toddy" is intoned far and wide as the levels of intoxication reach record, near-lethal heights. Among Rebel fandom, the only two matches that count are the Egg Bowl and the face-off with LSU. Since the latter rarely secures a win for Ole Miss (despite generation after generation of freshmen convinced that they invented the slogan "Geaux to Hell LSU), the former is where one pins one's hopes and dreams. And this time, Ole Miss came through.

88 Well, I just successfully "built" (for some value of "cobbled together") an LED hand lantern. Used one of those LED strips salvaged out of a busted "corn cob" high-bay lamp. The strips run on 18 volts DC. I had an old English-made fluorescent hand lantern, made to be run on eight "D" cells. It was nicely made. but never too bright, and LED's give way more lumens per watt. So I gutted it, mounted the LED strip on the plastic card that had supported the sockets for the wee 8W fluor tube. Removing the black plastic battery holder left enough room for 12 "D" cells soldered in series to be placed in the space, with a wad of paper towel to keep them from rattling. It lights up just fine, and my little el-cheapo multimeter says it is pulling 50 mA. That's a whole 0.9 watts of juice.

When I was a soph in high school and we moved to our new house, one of the first things I did was check out my step-father's bar. Liquor cabinet was locked, but pull out the drawer above it and you could reach down to open the door.

I didn't drink then. I just liked figuring things out.

Years later, I suspect my six-years-younger sister may have used the same technique for less innocent reasons.

Patel is quite outspoken, and could prove problematic to the Senate Shits, of course.

For instance, just this week Patel publicly called zuckerberg a "fraud."

While it's true, it's not helpful to the image of an unconfirmed nominee for Director.

Found the lock stuffed full of toilet paper so the door would just pull open and saw a rather shady dude wandering around the property and looking my way.
Pulled the TP out and called the front desk to report it and the guy.
Next day when checking out the Indian guy (dot not feather) at the front desk accuses me of being in league with the scumbag.
I got visibly angry when pointing out I reported what I found and asking if I was in on it why would I report it then show up to pay the next day.
Wasn't far from coming over the desk when he backed off.
The look on my face probably had something to do with it at that point.

After a period of "discussion" about this I was given a new room. It had hot running water and an entrance door that would spontaneously all night. Yeah.

The first thing he did after shutting off his alarm clock was to light up a cigarette.

The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy. They can go find another “sucker!” There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America.

230 Well, I just successfully "built" (for some value of "cobbled together") an LED hand lantern.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at December 01, 2024 01:21 AM (XeU6L)

Dealing with property damage, mostly. Some soggy flooring and drywall on the lower floor, which is basically a walk-out basement, as I understand it. Some minor damage to eavestrough from tree limbs. I think he got the fallen tree damming the pond removed. He will be flying back to AZ this week.

357 I was going to drive the '99 Suburban to Red Deer, about a 60 mile trip, to do some shopping. Got about a dozen miles into the trip, and turned back. The steering was much worse than it had been before. Instead of a slight steady pull to the right, it was becoming impossible to maintain a straight course down the middle of the lane, it would dart to one side or the other. Constantly felt like I was over-correcting. Almost like one of the pivot points, steering box, idler arm, or ball joint was seizing in the cold. And I know damned well I got every fitting to take grease when I worked on it a couple of months ago.

In my experience leftists expect to repeat a talking point they saw in the FNM and to wow everyone.

They are then shocked not only is everyone else already aware of whatever the talking point is, but thinks it is stupid.

Had a lefty aunt, my mother's older sister, who lived in Alameda, CA and was a big lefty. She moved out there way back in the '50s I believe it was, and got thoroughly indoctrinated.

She seemed to think we believed the way we did because we were just stupid and ignorant and didn't know the facts, and so she would try to inform us of the "facts". She couldn't understand how anyone could disagree on her "facts".

Mostly, for the sake of peace and family, we just tried to change the subject. Lefties are like this.

I don't think so. Vehicle had an out-of-Province inspection at a reputable shop. Worn tie rod ends and/or ball joints would be a hard fail. I am leaning towards "bad steering box". And I have a known good one in another chassis. Substitute a known good one, ensure that box is on dead center when wheels pointed straight ahead, and check all other pivot points for binding while steering box is out.

Yes, there is a big truck shop not far away, run by a friend. I can do the steering box swap myself. I have a hoist here, so it is not a daunting job. I have to make one Suburban fit for the road trip to AZ. The other one, the 2008, which I used to go to Texas in October, with ZERO trouble, has developed a driveline rumble which is probably a U-joint going bad. I will put it on the hoist tomorrow, and drop the driveshaft to check it. That is a real easy job. And I probably have a good NOS U-joint on my shelf. If not, the '99 will make it to town to buy one. If the '08 gets the driveline rumble cleared up, it will be my ride to AZ, as it was last Winter.

407 Probably a debate already settled upstream, but they may be a compromise here acceptable to all sides. As it currently exists, the UK is styled "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As a geographic feature, both the UK and Ireland make up the British Isles, which include various smaller islands off the coastlines of Great Britain to the North, East, and Southeast of Britain.

So, everyone debating the topic is correct. For a real challenge, go take a look at the Holy Roman Empire as it originally existed - a patchwork quilt of polities that the Holy Roman Emperor was barely able to contain, then examine the mess that modern Germany has become as a result of unification. For even more fun, have a go at the enclaves and exclaves sprinkled throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. It startles and amazes one how the Dutch and the Belgians manage to keep track of it.

If things break right for me I still have time a last house that I have always wanted. The degree of difficulty for me I am 1500 miles from any blood kin here New Mexico - I would love to live in very rural area but I have nobody to fall back on except for an ad-hoc group of people that are at best short term help. This tempers my choices. My compromise is Las Cruces, pop. 120,000, a lovely small city that has everything I need and mostly everything I want, a proposition that is diminishing over time. This is reality and when I think with precision I find my current situation is about right - everything is close and everything I love, the beautiful land, is minutes away.

If a new U-joint fixes the '08, and I am fairly certain that is the problem, I will use it for the road trip. It's good on fuel, comfy, and has a great heater in it. If one U-joint is bad, I will replace both, since it's easy enough while the drive shaft is out. If it is transfer case or rear axle, that will cause me some head-scratching.

425 If things break right for me I still have time a last house that I have always wanted.

Truce is with Lebanon only. And that's hardly holding up, with Lebanese returning back to S. Lebanon before they're supposed to and Hizballah using returnees as cover to smuggle back weapons and themselves.

There's a reason why this is a 60-day ceasefire.

I find it peculiar, provided I understand matters, that prior to the 6 day war all the Arabs in Gaza were Egyptians and the Arabs in the West Bank were Jordanians. And then, when the Israelis won those lands in a war dumped in their laps, suddenly all these Egyptians and Jordanians became oppressed Palestinians whose land was stolen from them. More peculiar is that Egypt and Jordan wrote them off them off instead of bringing their citizens home. Am I close the bulls-eye here?

Inaccurate. Jordan put all 1948 fleeing Arabs into refugee camps in Judea and Samaria because they wouldn't give them Jordanian citizenship. Egypt did the same with the Arabs who fled to Gaza. Same with Lebanon and Syria.

The world supported the UN's Muslim and Pan-Arab lobbies to keep all these refugees and decrepit camps. I remember seeing them in the early 70s. Third world huts with no modern amenities. That only changed after the 6-Day war when Israel provided for flowing water and electricity and then they started tearing down the hovels and putting up normal homes and buildings.

And yes, they all must go. Don't care how.

Yes, "E" matters here and I regularly forget to use that correctly. As an American of Swedish and Bohunk ancestry I am generally not up to speed about the social complications found in that part of the world. I like Orange and Mickey booze as my simpleton mind now operates on the level of the average McDonald's employee. 458 I would have liked it, would Leon Uris have lived into the era of the Abraham Accords, and the soon to be Abraham Accords II eras.

Even though fictionalized in novel form, his historical back-story for Exodus and The Haj, have proven out in damn near all of my diligent reading of the histories of the Promised Lands.

But he didn't live long enough to document the era of the Self Loathing Jew, the hopelessly democrat Jew, the Jew who berates Israel at every given chance, and many chances not given.

Odds are though, 50/50 as to which camp he would've been drawn into. His writings tell me that he was a mensch, of accurate historical conscious. His culture and timing though, suggest he would've fallen into the camp of Leonard Bernstein Jews, Black Panther parties, and all.

I'm not qualified otherwise, to judge or assess. Members of the Horde who are of the Tribe though? Do please weigh in?

Most of northern AZ is going to be 2000-3000 ft above what you're used to, and that translates into much cooler temps. Jamison and Bushmills are two of my favorites. An interesting Whiskey, a Scotch really, is distilled in Santa Fe, NM. The distiller learned his craft the in the Scotch distilleries and then he moved to New Mexico. Alas there is no peat here so he substituted mesquite smoke and dang, it is good. There are not cheap though, $65 for the 92 proof, $85 for the 120 proof. The name is Colkegan.

I recently exchanged words with a prominent tech leader (you’d know him) who was bearish on the U.S. despite the election results. His forecast didn’t convince me, so I remain confident that we’re charting our own path toward a new chapter of great meaning and progress.

While it may seem gloomy to many right now, breakthrough moments often emerge from periods of apparent darkness, much like Samuel Eliot Morison's description of 1492 at the beginning of his Columbus Biography, Admiral of the Ocean Sea:

"At the end of the year 1492 most men in Western Europe felt exceedingly gloomy about the future. Christian civilization appeared to be shrinking in area and dividing into hostile units as its sphere contracted. For over a century there had been no important advance in natural science, and registration in the universities dwindled as the instruction they offered became increasingly jejune and lifeless. Institutions were decaying, well-meaning people were growing cynical or desperate, and many intelligent men, for want of something better to do, were endeavoring to escape the present through studying the pagan past."

Good times await us -- take a step

I'm really enjoying this weather station. I can see all sorts of interesting things that happen. It was slowly cooling off, got down to 25.5F, radiation cooling mostly setting up an inversion. A few minutes ago, however, a little breeze picked up for some reason, about 2 mph roughly. That stirred things up and it warmed up to 27F pretty quickly.
