Anyone else have fun in their childhood years helping out with the milking and have barn cats standing around waiting for you to send a jet of milk right into their mouths?
Good memories. The other parts of the milking, not so much (Cows kicking milk pails over, the milk getting sullied and having to be thrown out, or put in a serving dish for the chickens when that happened, and how much that toughens up your hands, because wow do you need some hand strength to do that correctly.) A lovely bucolic scene but not overromanticized. The woman to the left has an expression that says this is work even if the setting is pleasant. (And where the hell is my lazy husband with those milk pails.) I especially like the gnarled tree in the foreground. Aside from the artistry in painting it with its rough bark, twisted branches, and the leaves that remain, it gives a feel that this is an activity that is timeless. The sky has that brightness that precedes actual sunrise. Just a very pleasant, effective painting.

Yep. I Like it. It's a bit richer tasting than cows milk. I knew a family where all the children were allergic to cow's milk and they started a small herd of goats. They turned it into a small side business. I delivered grain to their farm and they shared the milk and cheese and I got to play with the babies. (Baby goats are like puppies with strange eyes but just as playful.) Posted by: JTB at December 05, 2024 10:00 AM (yTvNw) 138
I have a copy of a mid 19th century cartoon labeled The Milking. It shows a cow, and on one end a man labeled “Plaintiff” is tugging on it. At the other end. A man labeled “Defendant” is pulling in the opposite direction. In the middle a well dressed man labeled “Lawyer” is seated on a stool, milking the cow.

The actor: Robert Mitchum The scene: The character has been drinking. A lot. Goes to milk the cow. Winds up trying to milk the bull. The result? Shirley McClain character becomes a widow. Again. Love that movie. Lots of big names. Dick VanDyke, Dean Martin, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Gene Kelly, and Shirley McClain. And the wonderful Margaret Dumont. The film was released in 1964. Miss Dumont (Groucho Marx favorite straight woman) died of a heart attack in March of 1965. She was 83 years old at the time of death. So she was past 80 when she was in What a Way to Go! Prohibition was a bad idea badly legislated and badly enforced. But it didn't spring up out of nothing. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Americans drank a staggering (so to speak) amount of alcohol. Men would, literally, live at bars and even have their mail delivered there. There were real societal ills that came from it. What made Prohibition really bad was that the threshold set by the Volstead Act was very low. Had it allowed wine and beer and come down more on the hard stuff, it might have brought the law less into contempt. Even so, it cut the rate of alcohol-related illness considerably. The amount of alcohol consumed per person per year, if I'm not mistaken, still hasn't reached the pre-Prohibition level. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 05, 2024 10:19 AM (dxSpM) 195

GPU and CPU prices have been going up for years without the tariffs.
GPU prices shot up like a rocket during the crypto boom because everybody and their mother wanted to start a BitCoin or Etherium farm. When that ended, along came COVID and prices stayed high because everybody was at home with a government check and money to spend. After that, Intel, AMD and Nvidia decided that if everyone was gong to pay the inflated prices they might as well keep them that way. Which is why an RTX4090 is going for close to $2000 (with an original MSRP of $1499) and the $5090 will probably start with an MSRP of $1699 and end up selling for $2499. Now they blame AI for the prices. They’ll blame Trump by the end of 2025. Posted by: SpeakingOf at December 05, 2024 10:29 AM (6ydKt) 238

That was a pre-planned hit on Thompson. Note the length of the silencer. Note also that the silencer back pressure appeared to interfere with the action of the pistol on each shot. My guess is the shooter went to central park and disappeared into one of the tunnels, changed clothes and appearance, walked out of the park and vanished. Professional killer.

The worse smell I ever experienced was when we did a fundraiser cooking BBQ chicken for lunch plates. After it was over a couple days later doing clean up there was an ice chest of uncooked chicken that was left outside . When I opened the chest it almost knocked me out.

We don't know the motive or politics of this person. But if bigshot Party cronies like like this jerk are now vulnerable, that's a good development. It might chasten them a bit, and be instructive for them.
There has to be a point, somewhere, where these unseemly power goblins make themselves hated by all and sundry. Maybe we're getting there. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 05, 2024 11:00 AM (2Rf9G) Posted by: Bulg at December 05, 2024 11:01 AM (v6JzV) 384

>>Lefty YouTuber Kyle Kulinski had a recent video on the shooting basically saying he's surprised it took this long to start, there should be more assassinations of evil capitalist healthcare CEOs, and it's the natural response of the people oppressed by our evil, backwards, for profit, human-rights denying healthcare system.
Never mind that our flawed but functional and competitive healthcare system was totally f'd up by Obamacare regulations -- by design -- in order to have it all collapse, ushering in single payer. But sure, blame it all on greedy CEOs like a good lil' Commie. Posted by: Lizzy at December 05, 2024 11:01 AM (u1uWe) 386

What's a "memecoin?" Some kind of cryptocurrency?
-- Yes. They are stupid as shit. Worse than "tulip fever." Pepe, Doge, Shibu are a few long running ones. Basically, take something popular, make a gif or image of it. Pay a few of another crypto to have it "published." And pre-sell it before listing on an exchange; billions, trillions. It's all rug pulls. Every time. But everyone hopes they'll be the first to sell at listing--when they're always the last: You can't beat the computers. Take the meme P'nut. One guy turned like $300 into $50 million. Don't feel sorry for the idiots that lose--it's like playing the lotto, with even worse odds. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at December 05, 2024 11:04 AM (rNE21) 391
Sounds like someone with an axe to grind. Could be ideological, but it was well thought out and executed, which speaks to motive and either a personal or fanatical interest. BTW UHC has the highest claim rejection rate of all insurance companies.
Posted by: Marcus T UHC is garbage.
