He started hibernating a month before everyone else, and stayed asleep for a month after the other bears woke up. He was eating less and less, and sleeping more and more. I use the term "Yard Sign Calvinists" to describe these people because they absolutely believe in the utter depravity of man, but they also believe that they themselves are saved, and being saved, they can do no wrong. This is why, for example, when a diary is found by Biden's daughter pointing to child abuse, the person who goes to jail is the one who published it, not the perp. It's why Obama and drone strike civilians because he's one of the Elect. They usually don't identify as Christian, but they very much believe in a Higher Power, the Arc of History, Karma, etc. Right now, they are have an existential crisis because Trump won. Because they are Elect, they don't believe they should suffer. They have no concept of purification through suffering, they hate suffering, they avoid it at all costs. They are entitled NOT to suffer, EVER. You, me, the Deplorables, we will suffer eternally, not them. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at November 29, 2024 05:16 PM (ZOv7s) 54

I’ve been chased by a lot of things, women with knives, moms with cars, a pissed off girl with a fork, and people with guns. But I think the most terrifying was a bear. There’s something about an animal that can eat you. They are deceptively fasts and black bear can climb trees. There is nothing you can do but fight or flight. Neither is a great choice.

You did! I wonder what the bears and the wildlife did during your storms. Do you think they knew where to go to be out of harm's way?
Posted by: nurse ratched ------ I have no idea. I've often wondered about that. While years of hunting innured me a bit to the plight of wildlife, in recent years I have become a great deal more sympathetic. Constantly looking for food, the constant fear of becoming food, constantly seeking shelter, probably frightened a good deal of the time. We have had incredibly good, clear weather since the storm. One thing that I and the neighbors have noticed is increased activity by birds. Loss of nesting, perhaps. I'm certain that hundreds and hundreds of squirrels also lost their nests. Funny thing, though. When Winter really sets in, Ontario gets cold, and snowy, and it stays cold. Here in Alberta, we get breaks. When the warm Chinook winds hit, temps can go up 50 degrees in an hour, and the snow melts like a mofo. Trees get fooled into budding out early.
