Ace of Spades Pet Thread, November 30

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Something scary for the pet thread. I'm always concerned on those rare occasions when our little Ony kitty ventures outside.

VERY scary.

Not all cats are the same.

Meet The PetMorons

lucy christms.jpg

I've encouraged Christmas pics of our fur friends. So here is Lucy!!!!

Nurse ratched

Lucy looks lovely by that tree. She is a fine inspiration for Christmas photos of our fur friends. Though not all of them may be so well-mannered next to a tree.

duncan n kitt.jpg

On the left is Kitty and on the right is Duncan. Kitty was staying with us due to a family emergency. At one point, she walked up to Duncan while he was on his bed and climbed in with him. When I sent the picture to her owner, she said "She doesn't even let Milo (The dog that lived with her) get that close!" She was even more shocked to learn that Kitty initiated the contact.

NR Pax

Thanks for taking good care of Kitty. It's wonderful that she felt safe with Duncan. They look great together.

Snowdog's dog Boco. His fourth home but he's a keeper.

Sounds like Boco is a great companion. A permanent home with Snowdog is a wonderful change in his life! But maybe he is not so sure about having his photo taken.

HONORARY PETMORON

We don't usually include people in photos of our PetMorons, but this photo was not just snapped yesterday. It comes with a compelling story (below).

Trixie 50.jpg

Greetings!

AoS Lurker "RS" here. Please forgive the intrusion, but I was perusing my photo files, including those digitized a few years ago when my mother (age 91) passed away. Anyway, please excuse the length of this missive, but the attached 50+ year old photo brought back many memories, which I wanted to share with someone of like mind.

First, a few words about my mother. She was definitely not an "indoor" pet person, by any means. Although she was born into humble circumstances in Alabama, she grew up with a code: the extent of one's monetary resources were never to be an excuse for a) bad English grammar; b) bad housekeeping or c) bad behavior in general. My dad used to joke that Mom kept the house in a condition in case the British Royals showed up unexpectedly for High Tea.

Anyway, thus did I grow up.

Needless to say, the idea of pets, especially dogs, was a non-starter. Dogs were messy. they shed hair. They ruined furniture. The thought of a dog would send my mom off to bed with a three day migraine.

Yet . . .God has a sense of humor.

As it happens, I developed a medical condition which medical science could not diagnose. It got to the point where the doctors were speculating that I would not see my high school graduation. So, in an early incarnation of "Make A Wish", did my dad appear with a mutt puppy, whom we named "Trixie."

Mom, of course, had rules, my medical issues notwithstanding. I house trained the dog: I vacuumed the house three or four times a week. We had throw rugs in every room where the dog was allowed.

All went well and Mom mellowed out. In fact, When Trixie shuffled off her mortal coil, we wound up getting dogs numbers 2 and 3 and adopting stray cats (Dad was a cat person).

Oh yeah, obviously I survived the medical issues to be able to write this 50 years later.

Thought you might like to read. Again sorry for the intrusion and the length.

Thanks for the weekly Pet Thread and keep up the good work.

Cheers!

I am so happy that the photo of Trixie brought back those great family memories. Looks like she was a treasured friend. So glad you survived the medical condition that stumped the doctors, too.

11 We rescued two male cats at that same time that were almost the exact same age, but were not littermates.

Of course, they were best buddies.

The black cat was the "mostly outdoor" cat, but his orange tabby buddy would join him outside periodically.

However, the orange tabby loved to go out in the snow. He would run around and pounce until his paws and belly fur were soaked, and then you might be able to call him back into the house.

The black cat would never go out into the snow, despite the orange tabby giving him the body language signal for, "Come on, let's go play!"

As K.T. says, "Not all cats are the same."

12 So on Wednesday I took old Joe into the vet for a checkup. He's old and feeling it so vet and I talked about end of time procedure. He's also gave Joe, a 19lb small terrier mix, his mandatory 3 year rabies shot. On Friday, Joe woke up blind.

21 On Friday, Joe woke up blind.
Anyone else experience this?
Posted by: Diogenes at November 30, 2024 03:46 PM (oh9qJ)

Sorry this happened. From a cursory search, I am not seeing blindness as even an uncommon side effect of the vaccine.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at November 30, 2024 04:02 PM (bss/y)

22 Diogenes,

Sorry to hear about Joe!

Is your vet still open today? If so, call and tell about the blindness.

Some dogs can be allergic to the rabies vaccine (or the adjuvants). This is usually seen on their FIRST vaccination, or late in life as they have had many rabies vaccinations.

I personally have never heard of blindness subsequent to a rabies vaccinations. However, swelling at the injection site and also around the face are fairly common. Perhaps inflammation and swelling in Joe's head have put pressure on his optic nerves, resulting in temporary (hopefully) blindness?

If you cannot get a hold of your vet, and you are worried about Joe's immediate condition, you might try some benadryl. It is generally well-tolerated by dogs. The correct dosage should be around 1 mg per pound. Make sure benadryl is the ONLY active ingredient in the dose you might administer.

*** I am not a vet, but have several close friends that are vets - and we frequently discuss the biology of animal diseases and the appropriate care. I also looked up benadryl for dogs on the internet, which is certainly only a semi-reliable source. A little inflammation relief effort might be beneficial.

23 Hooray, the pet thread! Nice to see Nurse ratched's Lucy. If Lucy has been featured before, I'd missed or forgotten it.

With those long legs and leanness, Snowdog's dog Boco could almost be part fox.

Daughter's cat Kismet continues to recover from the tail-otomy and the wounds on his back. Keeps getting out of his collar and cone of shame, but doesn't seem to be molesting the wounds.

Our Malinois Daisy loves more than anything to fetch a ball. She runs like the wind, but for her it's barely a lope. I like to fake like I'm throwing the ball one way, she'll run that way, then I'll call her attention and throw it 'way far the opposite direction. She punches and holds down the Turbo button for that.

I think Ace recently featured this in a cafe post, but Daughter had already sent me a link for it, saying, this is what Daisy needs:

Nurse, Lucy looks a lot like Trumpy.

I liked the cats in snow. We're freezing today in my part of Canada. Snowflake still went outside for over an hour. Trumpy has been very happy to sleep all day. It's been 2 solid months since the cats have been staying here.

We had Christmas in November with our friends. The kids decorated the tree. I got a good laugh when I welcomed them to the house and told them they get to visit their cats.

I asked the kids to fetch the cats for party tuna fish. One brought up Trumpy gently. Bit little kid gentle isn't THAT gentle.

Snowflake .... 8.8 pounds.
Trumpy ..... 10.8 pounds.

Not too bad.

Everyone have a happy week.

35 It's been amusing to see how Precious the Bichon reacts on her walks in different weather which has been quite varied recently. Apparently, different temps and humidity levels and wind conditions bring new scents to her. Unless she REALLY has to go, she gets too busy sniffing to do her business. Between her age and short legs she isn't fast, but she is 'dogged' (sorry, couldn't help myself) in tracking squirrels or cats across the grass. She'll be walking along then suddenly cut right or left to pursue her quarry. The best move is when the breeze comes from behind her. She looks back over her shoulder, realizes she's going the wrong way and does an immediate 180 degree turn.

Yes, when it comes to Precious, I am easily amused.

47 Nurse, Lucy looks like she owns the place. As is usual among loved house cats.

My Dagny La Siberienne is on the cushion next to me, grooming; she was there when I got up. She is still joining me almost every morning when I brush my teeth or when I shave, sprawling atop the bathroom counter and receiving strokes and gentle talk. Is this her idea of showing affection? Maybe.

Big black Stirling still likes to occupy my lap once or more a day. He's so big now that his head can rest in the crook of my left arm, and his rump is down near my knee. And then there's his tail beyond that.

51 Our dog would bark at any owl in our trees.. One day, she was just staring upward at huge Great Horned Owl. Owl was staring back at her.

If I'd had a photo of that moment, I'd add thought balloons for both:

Doggy-- "Hey, you're big enough to play with!"

Owl-- "Hmm. You're too big to eat."

52 I mentioned this on last week's Pet Thread, but I got it in late, so some of you may not have seen it. About ten days ago, while Miss Linda was visiting the cats and I was at work, Stirling *turned the window air conditioner on*. Yes, it was sheer chance that he put his paw on the right spot on the front panel; but still, as Miss L. said, "I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it."

The real test of cleverness would have been if he did it again later. And he hasn't.

55 Regarding snow: My late part-Coon, Arizona, got to experience snow briefly during the snow spell we had before Xmas in '89. I went out with him into the little patio, enclosed by a high board fence, that we had at that apartment. He padded around in the cold, seemingly unfazed, and turned his big muzzle up to receive flakes on his nose. I got cold before he did and ushered him back inside.

The late Marie-Antoinette, the smart black medium-hair, was not as pleased. In Denver I let her out onto the little patio I had there. She put a a paw into the white stuff, winced, withdrew it, put another paw into the snow, pulled it back, and looked at me as if saying, "What the *hell* is this???" She didn't have the pad-protecting paw tufts that Arizona and my Siberians had and have. When I first took her for a walk on her harness and lead, the walkways in the complex were dry of snow, and she stayed away from the white parts as she trotted along.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 30, 2024 04:55 PM (omVj0)

56 Back from outdoor ramblings. Temp barely above zero F. I got the white Suburban started; in fact it started easily, considering it lacks a block heater. Let it warm up, dove it a couple of miles, and made a cardboard radiator shield for it. Might help the heater put out better.

Did a little snow blowing, and took the batteries out of the tractor and one car that will winter over outside, and put them in the heated shop.

Pogo dog is curled up on the floor beside me here. She went outside earlier to attend to business.

We dared not have one until I was twelve -- not because of my health issues, but because our landlord said "No pets" and Mom was sure our upstairs neighbor would peach on us if we got a feline. The moment they moved out and Mom was sure of the new neighbor, she adopted a red tabby kitten we named Rusty.

Yes. Vaccinations are required by law in Seattle. As is registration and licensing.

Lucy has a chip, which she got when she was spayed. Her vet makes certain the chip has my current info when she gets her usual check up. If not for her thyroid medication, I'd take her in every other year, or if we had an issue.

She sees regular medical care far more often than I do.

Scared Lucy. She was napping on her heating pad under the big tree.

67 I need to take Cat in for his rabies sh0t. Problem is-- never know when he'll show up, so might miss whatever appointment time.

None of the nearby vets do "walk-ins" and the shelter vacc clinic is suspended while they remodel.

68 62 Little Dagny Sophia is still here next to me. I stroke her and she rolls on her back, inviting me to pet and lightly scratch her belly. Not a trap; she truly loves it.

Lucy the Fink will let me stroke her. Then flop on her side. Then lift a hind leg so I can rub the belly. Sometimes it's a trap. Sometimes she starts purring loudly and turns to jello.

Nurse, it sounds like Lucy's traps are better than those Admiral Ackbar spring on us.

70 Stirling and Dagny's vet has sent me a rabies reminder for him. She received hers for free at a local rescue group's event; I don't think any of them will offer such a thing during the holidays.

71 Oh, finally we get to see Lucy!
What a handsome girl she is.
Even if she is a fink, LOL!

72 I am having issues leaving food out for the cats as the grackles are eating it. The new stray, Hank, comes by irregularly. Still has a problem with his eyes. He does seem to enjoy being petted. Pretty sure he was some ones's pet. He and Troubles aren't friendly, so I try and make sure he gets a chance to eat when he shows up.

Troubles has remembered why he wanted to come into the house. He used to sit patiently looking at the back door. Now he stands up and bangs on it. We are all settling in for colder weather.

73 Loved the pets today, great stories and even a Rabbi joke. For what more can one ask?

It took me a long time to get that joke. Which may explain a lot. Have a nice evening all.

77 mindful,

I am pretty sure your birds are killdeers.

They are typically shore birds, but I sometimes see them working in the short stubble after we have cut the native grass for hay at the farm.
