Daily Tech News 24 November 2024

Top Story

  • Elon Musk is directing harassment towards individual federal workers. (The Verge)

    Is he indeed, O Verge?

The example cited - the only example cited - is of Musk suggesting that Director of Climate Diversification at the International Development Finance Corporation was a "fake job".

Now, "climate diversification" in this sense means recommending alternative crops to grow to make the food supply more robust against short and long term changes in weather.

Which is a task that could easily by filled by a fairly small book.

And in this case, it involves making those recommendations to other countries.

    So, never mind "individual workers".

USAID, its 10,000 employees, and its $50 billion budget: Afuera!

Tech News

  • In a small bit of welcome news in the never-ending shitfest that is Australian federal politics, the government has abandoned one of its attempts to strangle free speech across the entire world. (ABC)

The so-called "misinformation bill" would have set up the government as the arbiter of truth, and anything untrue would have become illegal speech. The bill did not specify how this was supposed to work; it just legislated it into reality.

And now it's dead for the current session of Parliament, and the left-wing Labor government is likely to be out of power before Parliament votes on any new legislation.

Still moving forward is the government's Won't Somebody Think of the Children Act, which bans minors under the age of 16 from using social networks, though again it never specifies how this is supposed to be achieved. This has the support of the nominally conservative Liberal Party and is likely to pass in some form, even though it is obviously completely unworkable.

That's the same party that previously wanted to ban encryption, claiming that Australia's laws superseded mathematics, so this betrayal of conservative principles comes as no surprise.

  • Lenovo's ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 uses the new CAMM2 memory module in place of SO-DIMMs, but with a twist. (WCCFTech)

Not only does it use the new, more compact modules, it uses LPDDR5X memory rather than regular DDR5.

This reduces power (LP = low power) and also runs faster at 7500MHz.

This is particularly welcome as AMD's Zen 5 laptop chips don't support regular DDR5, so without these modules, laptops based on those chips would not have any path for memory upgrades.

  • I don't remember if I wrote about this - the story is from six months ago - but yes, LPDDR6 is on its way. (Hot Hardware)

LPDDR6 promises initial transfer rates of 10.6GHz and eventually 14.4GHz, which is not dramatically faster than the best LPDDR5X chips available now.

Except that the bus is also 50% wider, and instead of fetching 8 words at a time it fetches 12.

Which makes 288 bits, which is not very useful for 64-bit computers, so the extra 32 bits at the end is used for very strong ECC (DECDED guaranteed).

    Which makes 10.6GHz LPDDR6 90% faster than 7500MHz LPDDR5.

This matters because current integrated graphics solutions from AMD and Intel are bottlenecked not by the chips but by memory speeds. Apple's higher-end M-series chips have (as far as I can tell) 256-bit or even 384-bit buses, and AMD's upcoming Strix Halo chips will also have a 256-bit bus, but regular laptops only offer 128-bit memory.

So when LPDDR6 arrives we can expect a big jump in integrated graphics performance.

(My new laptop has DDR4 memory running at 3200MHz. So... Yeah.)

  • Can ChatGPT-o1 complete a junior front-end developer's task? (Charbel Ghossain)

Well, yes, if you aren't worried about it working properly.

The code produced for this example sort of works, in that it doesn't break the page. But on a scale of 0 to 100, it only does anything at all for the range from 20 to 80.

  • It is shockingly easy to jailbreak LLM-driven robots. (Hot Hardware)

This is not shocking. LLMs are notoriously insecure and unreliable.

Simple solution: Don't fucking build LLM-driven robots.

  • Who the heck is the M4 iMac aimed at? (The Verge)

It's a lovely piece of engineering, but the screen is too small for serious work, the memory cannot ever be upgraded, and the network speed is limited to 1Gbit when even the Mac Mini has a 10Gbit option. And Apple has long since abandoned monitor mode, where an aging iMac with a perfectly good screen could serve as a monitor for another computer.

Which would all be forgivable if it were cheap.

The 10 core model with 16GB RAM and 512GB of SSD costs $1699.

  • Does GitHub Copilot improve code quality? (GitHub)

    Yes, says GitHub.

    No, says literally everyone else.

26 Evening and morning, early risers and Sunday toilers! I'm taking it easy this morning thanks to my bruised (?) rib, so coffee and breakfast, no workout. Outside, 53 F., the kind of temps I've been waiting for since March, and I can't really enjoy them. Grrrr.

Dreamed something last night about leaving a party, going across from the office building to collect a woman (who was neither Miss Linda nor my date), and walking with her, only to lose her down a corridor where a family I'd known in grammar school lived (in an apartment, now, not camping in the hallway). I told them it's impossible to drink all evening without getting dirty or sticky hands, and they found this to be deep wisdom.

Later I woke in what was supposed to be my apartment, but it was profoundly changed, with the separator between living room and kitchen torn out, panoramic windows in the front, and my coffee maker sitting on my ironing board. And there was a dachshund there, not mine.

39 Caught an article over at Slashdot this morning about Meta trying to force Apple and Google to do age-verification on anyone downloading from their respective app-stores. (This ties in with Pixy's information about the Australian government trying to prevent anyone under 16 from accessing social media.)

In the United States, SCOTUS has repeatedly affirmed the right to anonymity as being part of freedom of speech. How does age verification square with anonymity? It doesn't.

"Oh but it's just companies doing this" - then it's not a legal requirement and Google and Apple can tell Meta to pound sand.

"But we can require big tech to do this via regulation!"

Ah yes, but SCOTUS recently gutted the Chevron doctrine, so regulation that doesn't have the power of an actual act of Congress (ie, a law) behind it is moot and can be ignored, and once again Google and Apple can tell Meta to pound sand.

"Then we'll make a law requiring age verification."

And that law would be utterly unconstitutional based on repeated SCOTUS decisions.

40 "Accidentally threw out the fruitcake" made me think of this story in the little paper which I picked up at the Amish market:

Some neighbors of my grandparents gave them a pumpkin pie as a dessert. As lovely as the gesture was, it was clear from the first bite that the pie tasted bad. In fact, it was so inedible that my grandmother had to throw it away.

Ever gracious and tactful, my grandmother still felt obligated to send the neighbors a note. It read, "Thank you very much for the pumpkin pie. Something like that doesn't last very long in our house."

As part of the last night's dream scenario, too, I recall I was trying to straighten my place up when some people, apparently maintenance guys, appeared at the door. The longhaired dachshund tried to trot out. One of the crew said, "We're not allowed to touch him; call him back." I did, though I can't recall the name I used, and he did trot back to me. In the dream I concluded that he was a pedigreed dog and well-trained, whoever he belonged to.

93 Last night we watched the David Mamet thriller The Spanish Prisoner from '98. Campbell Scott (George C.'s son), Steve Martin (playing it absolutely straight, and very well), and the Ricky Jay character actor who has been in a lot of Mamet films all contributed to a superb quiet crime film. Rebecca Pidgeon (no relation to Walter), Mamet's wife at the time, has a wonderful turn too, and one of my new favorite movie lines. Someone asks her how she's been, and she replies, "My troika was pursued by wolves."

How good was the movie? I didn't move for two hours, afraid I would miss something.

I need to see more of Mamet's writing or directing projects. The only other I've seen was his '87 House of Games, with his then-wife, Lindsay Crouse. Another tale of con artists and their world, and of an everyday person being caught up in it.

Imagine being so humiliated and pissed off at losing a game of Call of Duty that you sic the SWAT team on your opponent,

173 The hackers were not able to listen to conversations on encrypted applications, like those carried over WhatsApp or Signal. Nor could they read encrypted messages, such as those sent from one iPhone to another over Apple’s iMessage system. But they could read regular text messages between an iPhone and an Android phone, for example, or listen to phone calls over the ordinary telephone networks, much as the government can if it has a legal order.

So the hackers got the US ORDERED back doors.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 24, 2024 07:52 AM (omVj0)

SS was always a SS taxes pay SS benefits plan. That is collections in any year equal payout that year. There was a buffer called the SS trust which was a stack of IOUs. So since around 2009 (it has been argued earlier than that) the trust have been sold off to pay.
Current taxes + Trust Sell off = Promised Benefits.
In or around 2033 the Trust will be ZERO.
So then the formula is
Current taxes + Zero = Promised Benefits
Current taxes = 77% or Promised Benefits.

I'd hazard a guess that 86.7%+ of 14 yos think they are vastly smarter than their parents, who are old, doddering, and confused by modern marvels. Then years later, around age 22 - 25, there is a sudden flash of understanding that their parents were pretty danged smart after all. It's the nature of 14 yos.

227 fd. If your wife is the only child taking care of mom she has to come to the conclusion that things need to change. Hopefully before her mom is harmed in some way. I finally had to speak with my mom after she fell in the parking lot of her condo complex. She had her dog on a leash, was trying to carry a box from her mailbox and using a cane. I was the only living child and took the initiative, my husband backed me on the decision. If there are other children involved maybe a sibling pow wow is needed.

230 211, the Brits used to drink it in droves. There is a reason sherry casked Scotch is so famous and considered to be a traditional Scotch. The Brits had so many sherry casks left over from importing sherry, they aged their Scotch in it.

Á dirty little secret. The Spanish stopped exporting sherry in barrels, only in bottles. Now the Scotch Makers have to recreate these barrels because people are used to the flavor. Now they buy barrels and pour cheap sherry in them for a few months so they then can fill them with scotch whisky.

Actually, I should do the story, but I don’t think by writing is up to the level of the great people who post here.

To the best of my knowledge, used casks with a market are disassembled and shipped to their buyers for reassembly.

I know that's done here in Israel, both for import and export of old casks.

Interesting. That makes sense.

Extrapolating that a bit. You could just soak the stays in a vat of conditioning sherry (maybe even heat it and pressurize it) rather than filling individual casks.

242 235, I hear ya. But it was actually many decades ago with the Spanish wanted to protect the name Sherry and they stop selling the wine in barrels, it is only sold by the bottle. The barrels used to create Sherry are useless because they are used for 100 years or so, and the barrel offers nothing to the wine. What we call Sherry barrels or the barrel used to ship it to the UK, But that has happened for many decades.

No, the scotch makers want to re-create the flavor of Sherry casked whiskey So they buy super cheap Sherry or type of Sherry resident that they create two “season” barrels, To give off the Sherry flavor. I am not saying it’s fake, but it is a bit fake. The real reality is is the best we can do.

Posted by: Quint at November 24, 2024 08:39 AM (gKpOq)

243 When Scotch makers say they use various Sherry barrels now you know the truth. They are not sourcing barrels that Sherry was aged in, except for the ones they use specifically to make their whiskey.

They build their own barrels and they “season” Them with cheap Sherry or a Sherry must that they create. Sherry barrels never met the barrels that Sherry was aged in because those never leave Spain. Sherry barrel used to ship Sherry to the UK, But that hasn’t been done in many many decades.

I hope I’m clear now. I know I screwed up, but I get to the point of it lol. No, the horde knows about Sherry barrels whether they asked or not.
