  • Elon Musk's new ideas for improving government efficiency are not in fact new. (The Verge)

    Do tell, O Verge.
Though DOGE isn't a real department - and may in fact just be President-elect Donald Trump's way of placating Musk by giving him the appearance of a real job - it represents a long-running right-wing attempt to gut the civil service, a plan the incoming administration fully supports.
So it only appears to be a real job, but the administration fully supports it?
In any case, Musk and Ramaswamy have proposed cutting "thousands" of federal regulations and determining the "minimum number of employees required at an agency for it to perform its constitutionally permissible and statutorily mandated functions."
    Awesome.
This time around, it's not clear whether the courts would stop Trump, who, in his first term, nominated more judges to the federal judiciary than any of his predecessors and will inherit an extremely friendly Supreme Court. And as Musk and Ramaswamy noted in their explanation of how DOGE will function, the incoming Trump administration has something new at its disposal: the recent Supreme Court decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, the landmark case that overturned Chevron deference.
    Better and better!
The goal is mass deregulation - a weakening of checks and balances and a major cut to basic government services, all in the name of concentrating power among a small group of plutocrats.
As opposed to the way things are now, where government regulations are the primary tool for concentrating power among a small group of plutocrats?

We have nothing to fear but the Left's recursive function:
power = f(regulations). DOGE it seems: liberty = f(-regulations)

This is not going happen easily.

Here's one badly in need of a performance review -based purge, given that vote counting is still going on for House races in California.

The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) supports state and local election officials in their efforts to ensure accessible, accurate. and secure elections. EAC develops guidance to meet the Help America Vote Act requirements, adopts voluntary voting system guidelines, and serves as a national clearinghouse of information on election administration. EAC also accredits testing laboratories and certifies voting systems, as well as audits the use of Help America Vote Act funds.

49 Ben Had,

Kittens have hit the 5.5 month age mark.

While Margo is still around 5.4 pounds, her brother, Frog is right up against 9.0 pounds.

The Norwegian Forest Cat half is really beginning to show, with both of them having long and bushy tails, fur beginning to grow out from between their toes, and several other physical and behavioral traits emerging. Can't keep either of them away from water, as they love to play with it.

Both of them have been running and chasing each other since about 4:30 this morning, and I have Thunder-hooves going across the TV room ceiling.

Almost forgot how much 'fun' kittens bring to a home.

Mass deregulation actually strengthens checks and balances. It prevents an unelected "civil servant" from forcing his preferences on the populace with no permission or oversight from the people's representatives.

95 Since we're doing an Organ Recital this morning (pancreas, liver, etc.): My blood work came back. Still I'm a little anemic. My blood glucose is normal; but my A1C is still elevated. ???? What can cause that? Three months ago my doctor seemed to think the anemia and A1C reading could be connected.

I'll stick with the no sugar/lower carb diet anyway. I've lost weight and completely eliminated the heartburn that sugar and corn syrup products used to give me. Enormous improvement.

109 WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Reuters) - President-elect Donald Trump is considering tapping Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, to be a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to four sources familiar with the transition plans.
Grenell, who served as Trump's ambassador to Germany and was acting director of national intelligence during Trump's 2017-2021 term, would play a key role in Trump's efforts to halt the war if he is ultimately selected for the post.

To me, shrimp and seafood is much more a meal to give thanks for and with.

Last week I asked her what she wants for her birthday on 12/1. She says, "I'm thinking." I warned her that it's now too late to order anything online, so it had better be something I can get from a store here.

115 I don't often do this, but I want to mention a brand of in-ear headphones that I have been using during my (almost) daily walks.

Amazon is running deals on TOZO brand stuff, and for their price point, I couldn't be happier.

Their noise cancelling ones address my big resistance to wearing stuff that blocks out noise, for safety considerations while walking.

Transparency mode actually brings in the ambient sounds around you while walking, so you hear cars, people and other noises that give you an audible sense of what is happening around you.

Switch to noise cancelling mode, and they drop your ambient noise by as much as 45db.

Anyhow...just thought I would share.

Well, last time I was there, they had upped their game. They had three or four checkout lines open and have done away with a lot of the self-checkout stuff -- too much shoplifting, I guess.

On the other hand, they have some of the car detailing supplies, and the deodorants (?!), locked behind glass. Jeez.

If you saw all of the Karate Kid movies, you'll probably enjoy Cobra Kai.

They're pretty good at bringing back previous villains and allies. It's in its last season and about 5 episodes away from ending. The strain is showing in the effort to come to a grand finale involving everyone, all heroes and villains alike, but eh, you've come this far why not?

CK is basically a kind of soap opera with lots of fighting. I've enjoyed it as light entertainment. It's so far been the best attempt to resurrect a dead franchise that I've seen.

BONUS! No woke nonsense beyond some grrrl power stuff.
DOUBLE BONUS!! Everyone gets the stuffing beat outta them and some point.

Check it out.

As it goes along they bring in more characters from the movies. For instance, the original Cobra Kai owner/sensei asshole reappears and Elisabeth Shue kinda makes an appearance as Daniel’s ex-girlfriend.

It’s a fan service show for 80s kids who wanted to be Daniel-san. And it does that part well.

But it does get kinda Cali-Woke in parts with the younger generation on the show.

No Pat Morita though, cuz he died.

236 Since this actually somewhat tech-related, I came across an old issue of Analog magazine published in 1973. There was an article about "mini-computers" and the marvels of the integrated circuit.

Some of these "mini-computers" only weighed 33 pounds and could be put on a desk!!! (This is back in the days of the "main frame" computer that occupied an entire room). However, there was debate if a "mini-computer" could ever be made small enough to fit in the palm of the hand; a novel was criticized for using such impossible devices.

What we now take for granted was literally science fiction 50 years ago.

241 I especially like how this part shows a profound ignorance of how the federal government works:

"The goal is mass deregulation - a weakening of checks and balances and a major cut to basic government services, all in the name of concentrating power among a small group of plutocrats."

Shrinking the Executive Branch and it's swarms of officers is "weakening checks and balances" and "concentrating power". The author might be surprised to know that the C&B come from three co-equal branches, not one extremely powerful branch.

Also: We've made no significant technological advancements in generations except making things smaller and faster.

We're in a rut. People are beginning to notice that it's a self-induced rut because our gatekeepers in science and physics don't want anything upsetting their grifting applecarts, so no new research or ideas are pursued/allowed.

It's been mentioned here before, but remove screens from homes and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart from 1970s homes except for some interior design choices.
