Greetings loyal and fabulous HORDE! The picture did not come from a web search or an AI bot. I took the picture with my Samsung S23 [not an endorsement] as I flew the last leg of the last rotation on the last day I was legally allowed to fly for a major airline. We were at 35,000 feet headed eastbound, somewhere over Tennessee at about 0600L. The sunrises are one of the things I miss, even after flying a red eye. There are, of course, some things that I don’t miss.
For example, I don’t miss the freekin’ gunfire. WTH? Spirit, Jet Blue and Southwest. You already have heard the stories but please, just stop! Now, I must admit that Haiti is really no surprise. It is a failed state. But Dallas, as far as I know, hasn’t failed yet. So, I was surprised that Southwest was hit as it was taxiing out at Dallas Love.
The cockpit of a Southwest Airlines plane was hit by a bullet at Dallas Love Field Friday night, sources and officials told WFAA.
So, I wonder if the airlines will start offering stylish Kevlar uniform items? Maybe Kevlar wrapped seat cushions for the peeps? You know, we should remember the experience of our Vietnam vets, eh?
The potty proposal by the European aerospace giant is part of ongoing work into what the aviation industry has dubbed Extended Minimum Crew Operations or eMCO for short.
Extended Minimum Crew Operations is a euphemism for single-pilot operations in which just one pilot is at the controls of a packed widebody aircraft during the cruise phase of flight.
e=MCO. I can’t wait for the memes. What does the HORDE think? Good idea or bad idea? Having flown single-seat fighters and multi-crew transports for over 50 years, I think it’s a decidedly bad idea. Two humans are the minimum for a reason. It’s usually true that one pilot can handle everything when operations are normal. But that’s not why they get paid. They get paid to handle everything when things go wrong, as they inevitably will at some point. Predictably, the alarm bells are going off right now.
Suggestions considered by the pan-European agency included asking pilots to deliberately dehydrate themselves before starting a lone shift at the aircraft controls, as well as requiring them to eat a high-protein, low-residue diet to mitigate the risk of them needing to defecate.
The agency also looked at other outlandish solutions like making pilots wear adult diapers, or equipping cockpits with disposable urine collectors.
And y’all think riding in coach sucks. It will be interesting to see where this goes, but with AI seemingly invading every aspect of our existence, I’d say that eMCO is only a matter of time.
It’s not just the airplanes where the shenanigans are in the works: MEET AIMEE
"It starts with a digital control tower. So that is where we replace the out-of-the-window view from the traditional tower cabinets above us. That information, because it's now digital rather than an analogue view, means that we can send that information through processing. And that processing is done through our digital artificial intelligence engine, which is known as AIMEE."
It is a brave new world, eh? I wonder what happens when AIMEE becomes self-aware. I saw a movie about that once. And obviously there’s a stable supply of electrons coming from all those wind turbines, right?
BTW...off topic…what is it with lefty socialists loving rape and suicide?
Rape and Suicide Increase With Religious ‘Nones,’
"Truscott’s analysis showed a very clear correlation between increases in the rate of Americans identifying as religious “nones” and rape and suicide rates."
Now be honest, HORDE, if you are not old enough to watch, don't click!
If it isn’t rape and murder with those people, it’s global thermonuclear war, I guess.
"BREAKING: Secretary of State Antony Blinken announces "every dollar we have at our disposal will be pushed [to Ukraine] between now and January 20th" when Trump takes office."
Isn’t this called “poisoning the well”? It seems like all the lefties don’t like it and call it a logical fallacy. But I think it seems accurate here. BIDEN: “Hey, Don. Good luck with your next four years. Too bad about WW3 that I started.”
It’s like the left has determined that if they can’t rule the world, they will leave no world left to rule.
From fertile creative minds, perhaps early in 2025 (OFP).
In response to Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton’s post on Truth Social that Trump was “prepared to declare a national emergency and will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program,” Trump replied “TRUE!!”
Texas Land Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham on Nov. 20 sent a letter to the incoming Trump Administration offering over 1,400 acres of newly acquired General Land Office (GLO) state land in Starr County, Texas, for the construction of deportation facilities and staging areas to carry out the Trump Administration’s plans to deport illegal immigrants beginning in 2025.
As Texas Land Commissioner and steward of over 13 million acres, it’s been my promise to all Texans since assuming my role at the GLO to use every tool at my disposal to gain complete operational control of our southern border,”
Giddy up, muchachos and muchachas! Oh, and all the jihadis and TDA gang members too. Bye.
But what about the other border? We seldom even consider it and the news…well, the “news” certainly doesn’t care. I found a nice little essay in The Free Press, The Other American Border Towns, by A.M. Hickman.
Seven months after the roaring success of the Woodstock festival in 1969 in Bethel, New York, a handful of concert promoters would begin an attempt to “take over” Churubusco to host a three-day rock concert they called the “Churubusco Live-in.”
The town’s attorney, J. Bryon O’Connell, warned: “That live-in will turn into a lynch-in. People up here aren’t used to long hair. They don’t fool around with legal niceties and they’re not going to put up with any nonsense from college students. If they come up Route 189, they’re just liable to get shot.” The hippies did not, in the end, come up Route 189.
‘Merica.
BTW, did you notice the temp? Two degrees warmer in Canada. That’s some tough living.
Speaking of tough living, I’ll admit I am a Taylor Sheridan fan. I don’t know how he does it or how many writers he has working, but his stuff is everywhere. It also seems that he is onboard with keeping America the ‘United States” and not “fundamentally transforming:” it into something else. His opinions are sometimes not so subtly worked into the dialog.
Billy Bob Thornton is a riot as a main character and this scene went viral immediately after it showed:
You know the writing is on target if it invokes a lib uproar and reddit poo-storm. "It's 100% propaganda".
Pretty much everything in it, starting from the opening scene, is so [far] from reality it's ridiculous…They could have made a good, realistic show, showcasing some of the history of the oil patch in Texas. Instead, they went with pure fantasy. Even though I'm in the industry, 4th generation from my family in O&G, I don't appreciate them turning the show into a puff piece for big oil. It's 100% propaganda, almost every line of dialogue.
Well, I’m sure the writers have taken some artistic license here and there to make it more entertaining. I mean, that’s kind of their job. But the “pure fantasy” part? In the opening seconds Thronton draws the difference between “clean energy” and “alternative energy...nothing clean about that”. I’d have to say I’m with Thornton on that subject. And is the commenter above trying to say that oil is not in everything? Really? From what I’ve read, the 20-year operating life span mostly seems to be through liuck. And don’t get me started on the migratory bird Cuisinart angle. Buck Throckmorton typically gives the horde pithy updates on the industry, so stay close.
Also, yes, his writers like the f-bomb and other spicey language which gets a little grating at times. But sometimes there is just a gem that pops into the script that could be missed. In the credits of season 5, episode 9 there is a tribute to “the loving memory of Billy Clapper”.
Immediately, I had to look him up, but I suspected it was the steel outfitter craftsman that made the cameo appearance.
A legend in his field, Klapper started to make bits and spurs full-time in 1968. He was specifically known in the cowboy community for his one piece spurs, the very same piece that catches Rip’s eye in the episode. He was also one of the few remaining spur makers to be trained by Adolph Bayers, another legend who made bits and spurs from the 1930s to the ’70s. Over the course of his long career, Klapper made 682 different spur patterns and 816 different bit patterns, according to his obituary. He was revered for his artistry and for his ability to replicate old designs from other makers.
Klapper died on Sept. 10 of this year at the age of 87. He is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Yeates and Elizabeth Wilson, and six grandchildren.
Here’s a very nice video of Billy describing his craft. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
Rest easy, cowboy.
Close it out with a little music, eh? Who would have thought there's even a song about Pampa, Texas, Billy's home town?
Thanks for riding along, HORDE! Keep the blue side up!
Roger, out.

The smears against @PeteHegseth are downright pathetic when you think about them for more than two seconds:
- A sexual assault allegation for which he was never charged because police determined the woman's story to not be credible.
- Claims from anonymous sources that he sometimes, occasionally, every so often, drinks alcohol.
All of it is a joke and it's happening because he serves as a threat to one of the most powerful interest groups in Washington DC: The multi-trillion dollar defense lobby.
Pete Hegseth is not a DC insider. He's not a guy who kissed a lot of ass to become a whatever star General. He's somebody who actually served in their failed wars and wants to do something to stop the gravy train and the wokeness at the Pentagon. I'm sure most of the rank and file of the military are excited that he was nominated. That's why they're trying to destroy him.

Trump should keep his campaign apparatus raising money and running ads, and dumping huge amounts of money into any challenger's campaign, even if he's not ideal. Have Trump personally and vociferously campaign for them. Let the pilot use the regular biffy in the forward cabin. Really, both chairs should be occupied, so that one pilot. can relieve the other as needs require. If they "must" go to one pilot, hand over control of the aircraft to a qualified pilot working remotely from a console in an office building (we steer oil wells that way, now). Remote pilot could have readouts from all the cockpit instruments, plus a camera view out any of the windows on the flight deck. One "remote" pilot could probably handle biffy breaks for several different airplanes, by having the live pilots schedule their breaks in 10-minute time windows.

Sean Davis @seanmdav 29m
Sources with direct knowledge tell me this story is nonsense and indicate they’ve had enough with games being played on Hegseth’s Defense nomination by Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
One source said Graham, who has never found a war he didn’t want other people to fight, spent the weekend crying to Trump about Hegseth, while Ernst has been running an inside-the-beltway campaign to knife Hegseth.
Sources say the WSJ article touting DeSantis is a key part of the Ernst/Graham operation to torpedo Hegseth because of his foreign policy views and opposition to endless, pointless wars.

AOP, I think (something I never knew about) that a president can, indeed, compel a congressional recess, when the two houses cannot agree on one, and one house has recessed.
"in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper" (Article II, Section 3).
So the House could go into recess, when the Senate refuses, the president can adjourn them both.
Possibly I have this wrong, I know it has been discussed for the past month or so by knowledgeable scholars, but language seems pretty plain to me.

Suggestions considered by the pan-European agency included asking pilots to deliberately dehydrate themselves before starting a lone shift at the aircraft controls, as well as requiring them to eat a high-protein, low-residue diet to mitigate the risk of them needing to defecate.
Great idea. The lone pilot could have kidney failure because the kidneys might not have enough water to process the protein. After the pilot becomes incapacitated the passengers might wish they had flown Boeing.

A few weeks after the election and closed door meetings with Trump, Thune expressly said he would allow this to happen.
A couple of days before Thune announced it, Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA said on his podcast that TPUSA could easily go into South Dakota and because it is such a small state, population-wise, it would be easy to run a primary operation.
Since then, Charlie Kirk has spent a week or so at Mar-A-Lago, staying there as a guest. Charlie is now a good friend of the entire Trump family, Don Jr and Charlie talk all the time on their respective podcasts.

Graham went apes**t when Trump rescinded the DACA EO, on a Saturday he lived in front of the cameras and fulminated about taking emergency action. A few weeks prior to the '22 mid-terms, he introduced a ridiculous bill - which nobody of importance was calling for or had even mentioned - to re-nationalize the abortion question, after SCOTUS's historic/long overdue dumping of Roe. To my knowledge, in his long undistinguished career he's had zero profile on abortion beyond the de riguer platitudes and free votes. And he comes out of the blue with that idiocy in the heart of election season.

Good thing I don't work at an airlines maintenance hangar.
'Cause 1 Apr 24, there WOULD be a 737 or Airbus hooked up to a jetway.
And it would have painted on it, all of the standard makings for Crew Egress Systems (ejection seats). The red outline of the "blow-off" hatches above the seats.
The yellow triangle symbols warning of armed ejection systems inside. The yellow directional arrows with "RESCUE" in capitalized black letters, pointing to imaginary panel access holes for ground crew to "open up" the cockpit for crew rescues.
And of course, matching red "blow off" hatch paintwork over each cabin crew seat, in the bargain.
A bit of creative foam core board and silver & grey and green oxide paints, some gorilla tape, and I could make the pilot n' co-pilot seat resemble a Martin Baker or ACEES II units.
Odds on any given flight, at least ONE passenger would know enough to notice, and then the hilarity would begin.
OF COURSE the flight crew would notice, right? ...Right?...RIGHT?

167 I've had more fun with this weather station of mine watching all that stuff, and comparing with the others around the area.
Last night, it cooled off rapidly at sunset. It was a smidge below 30F at 7:30PM. Then, wind picked up, and temp starting rising pretty fast. It got back up to 39F in 45 minutes, and was still around 34 at midnight. Then it slowly cooled back down, low of 23.5 right at sunrise.
The reason for that was some cloud cover moved in and interrupted the radiative cooling process. That was responsible for the wind, which stirred it up as well.

Any motorcycle rider out on a country road on a cool, crisp day, can tell you instantly of the temperature differences with every rise and fall of the road.
On those days when you can see the kitchen smoke lying damn near motionless, lazily wafting away from the vent pipe on the house, neither rising nor falling, but just...drifting...away.
THOSE are the temps and conditions in which the rider becomes at once, the most accurate Human Weather Station, excepting for every blue water sailor yet at the helm.

190 I expect I'll get below 20F, maybe a good little bit before sunrise.
Another thing that amazed me was how fast I warmed up after sunrise the past few days (but not this morning). Temp went from 25 to 40 over the 8am hour. That's the solar irradiance.
Our eyes have pretty amazing dynamic range, such that a full Moon can seem bright, yet still handle noon in summer. Orders of magnitude different in radiative flux there.
So the difference between radiation at sunrise, vs when it kicks in during the 8am hour here now is not obvious to the eyes.

196 Interesting thing with that rapid warm up period is dew point increases just as sharply for a while, then, boom, it crashes.
That's the inversion layer "burning off". The surface heats rapidly under the inversion layer, warming up moisture. Then, boom, it "bubbles up" and starts mixing with the upper air. Temp increase then levels off, and dew point drops.
It didn't do that this morning so much because of cold air advection (that's my cousin, the retired meteorologist, who explains all this to me).

Old C-130 Nav here. My favorite flights were low level night flights with just enough moon to see. It was especially beautiful in the winter. All grey and white and dark. Best flight was dropping Marine LRP guys at a bunch of different 'DZs'. The weather was delta sierra and the DZ's were soccer fields on the edge of town, a HS football stadium, things like that. Very unconventional and a challenge. It was a blast. The next best was my Special Ops Low Level I (Day) qual flight in the Philippines. We joined with a couple of A-10 escorts, and flew over the jungle really low. I could do no wrong that day. My pilot was the Wing DO and on our wing was the Squadron CO. We won all the bets that day. The DO asked me where I wanted to be in the Wing and he's make it happen. I went to the Airlift Control Element as an Ops Officer. Best. Job. Ever.

I think really not that many. Might be something that happens in episodes as certain species migrate through the windfarm area. Automobiles and airplanes strike birds, too. Really, it's bats that are most likely to fall victim. They hunt insects, and the windmill blades sweep up insects and concentrate them. Good hunting for bats. They can see, and avoid, the blades, but what they cannot see are vortices that trail the blades. They fly into a low-pressure zone aft of a blade, and their little lungs hemhorrage, and they die.

I was with Dad one time, when he picked up a 'hiker. We were going to Spokane. The guy had a wooden sign, with "SEATTLE" routed into it. He was active duty, on leave (so he said) from Army. Dad was former Air Force. They had a good long chat...
Got the fellow another 100 miles closer to his destination anyway, and dropped him off at the I90 junction.

There were big one-cylinder spark-ignition engines, too. Ran on light crude, or casing-head gas, or straight natural gas. Such things are still used when a new field is being developed, until enough wells are on line to make it cost-effective to run a power line to the field, and electrify the pumps.

Drones don't have lungs. Turbulence might upset them. I don't know if drones have any self-righting routine. In any case, you would probably want to fly the drones well below the circle made by the blades, and scan the ground downwind of the towers, too. A stricken bird won't necessarily drop like a rock; might flutter vainly, and be carried by the wind as it loses altitude.

What happens to a department when the cabinet level official doesn't get approved by the Senate? The President still has all executive power invested in that office right? If there is no Secretary of Defense appointed, POTUS still can override, at least officially, career bureaucrats, right?
I'm no legal scholar, but it seems like the Senate can block the power of a nominated delegate, but not the words of POTUS himself on purely executive issues.

Hegseth seems like a good pick from Trump.
He gets it when he talks about removing all the woke from the military and ending the pointless wars so we can rebuild our forces.
But Hegseth will be the SecDef and that’s a big responsibility in today’s world, especially considering the nuclear aspect.
He’s got a few strikes against him if you look at it objectively.
He’s young. He’s a TV presenter (good on screen but how about in the Situation Room?). He’s never led a large organization, certainly nothing like the behemoth U.S. military.
And if all of these stories circulating about him aren’t complete B.S. then Pete’s got some serious baggage he’s going to have to unpack in front of the world at the confirmation hearing.
If he makes it to a hearing he might surprise everybody and come out a winner.
I like the guy and wish him luck but it looks like they are about to give him the push like Gaetz.
We’ll see how it plays out.

You know, hitchhiking has really fallen off. Most people are leery of picking up hitchhikers, and the way many hitchhikers present, I don't blame them.
But we have a perfect tool now, to remedy that, the smart phone. How about a smartphone app, that would put hitchhikers in contact with drivers willing to to give a ride? Kind of like the load-share boards that truckers use. Both drivers and passengers would register with the app, and be subject to some basic vetting, like have a fixed address, have a cell in their name, be able to give a couple of in-country references. And have a destination address, too.

I can envision what the app needs to do, but know nothing about how to make it happen. You would have to have an iron-clad liability disclaimer, like, "we make every effort to vet both drivers and passengers to ensure criminals and insane persons are not acting as drivers or passengers, but no system of vetting is perfect. Ultimately, you have to go with your gut." "Ensure that pickups and drop-offs are done at visibly public places, with some safe sheltered area where passengers can await onward transport." The app will auto call both drivers and passengers at intervals during a hitch, and drivers and passengers should answer, and state that all is well.

Hegseth will be gone by the weekend if they are substantially accurate and if not, it is going to one bumpy confirmation. The one-sided picture painted of him is he has gone through life as a drunken frat boy that played grab ass every chance he got. That kind of Comanche warrior wildness might make for a great field commander or a human missile pointed at the DOD deep state but it is hardly the right stuff for running the the vast American war machine, especially with the world sliding towards a world war. Hegseth has certain attributes that would make him an excellent barbarian administrator who could make meaningful changes in the DOD but there has to be more to him than that. It's not clear at this time that there is and with all the other things swirling he is certainly looking like a slim to none chance nominee.

I see these nomination attacks as the opening artillery shots intended to blow up Trump's second presidency by the Left. The barrage to follow Is going to be scorched Earth. As a practical matter it seems to make sense to move on from Hegseth and replace him with a person with rock solid qualifications, such as Bondi or DeSantis DeSantis. Trump has 2 years to make effective changes throughout the entire federal government; he doesn't have time to mess around with the Hegseth circus. I don't like any of these preemptive smear campaigns against Trump nominees but that doesn't matter. The reality is Trump has made two miscues, he corrected one perfectly and now he has a chance to correct the other one before the elephants starts stomping. Desantis could be a great pick.

Trump's nominations were intended to generationally change the bureaucracy hence picking young fire brands like Gates and Hegseth. I think it was a brilliant strategy and still do. Having worked on essentially start-up projects a couple times, the key skill is not so much what you already know but what you could figure out going forward. Hegseth seem to have that quality and I think he could have grown into the position but that's my speculation. Now that it's become a circus, Trump needs to find somebody else that can fill that slot that doesn't come with all that.

February, 2015—states that, at one point, Hegseth had to be restrained while drunk from joining the dancers on the stage of a Louisiana strip club, where he had brought his team.
No toga? Come on New Yorker, put some lipstick on this pig.
Hegseth being at a bar in the early-morning hours of May 29, 2015, while on an official tour through Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, drunkenly chanting “Kill All Muslims! Kill All Muslims!”
WTF? Is Blasey Ford back on the smear campaign payroll? That is quite the cartoon being sold here.
Blumenthal...“Much as we might be sympathetic to people with continuing alcohol problems, they shouldn’t be at the top of our national-security structure.”
Dude, you had exactly zero fucks about Kamala acting drunk for 4 years as VP. Spare me
In January, 2016, Hegseth resigned from Concerned Veterans for America...a mutual decision.
Then the article goes on and lays out a bunch of anonymous smears that he was pushed out cuz he was drunk all the time.
Wash, rinse, repeat. This reeks of Kavanaugh all over again. Again, what matters here is what Trump decides to do and that will be our answer. All this other stuff, pack sand.

Farmer - No. Wish I could help though. You have your hands full, I know. So much of life seems to land on us all at once. It's damned debilitating and frustrating. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Got a long day today: dr.'s appt. in the afternoon. If I get out in time, I can come straight home. Beyond a certain point, though, it makes more sense for me to stay near work, miss the rush hour traffic, and have some dinner, then drive home.
So Trump's cabinet picks are being slandered again in the "news," huh?

>>>as I flew the last leg of the last rotation on the last day I was legally allowed to fly for a major airline. We were at 35,000 feet headed eastbound, somewhere over Tennessee at about 0600L. The sunrises are one of the things I miss, even after flying a red eye.
How bittersweet! Thank you for telling us the story.
