The Parting Cheer

Henry Nelson O'Neil

From The National Maritime Museum:

This large-scale painting, both ambitious and complex in conception, is the key mid-19th century image addressing emigration. Rich in interpretative material, it focuses on the reactions of those left behind on shore. The scene is set along the Thames although the artist has deliberately denied a precise geographical location. Groups of figures, in a mix of gender and social class, are shown on the quayside as an emigrant ship departs on the far right. Red and blue shirted sailors are shown cheering from the deck of the ship and from the sides of the rigging. They wave hats and arms or stretch out to maintain the links with shore for as long as possible. Partly in shadow, a group of emigrants look out from the deck below. They are subdued in contrast to the scene around them. Some wave handkerchiefs towards the people on the quay, but are otherwise passive participants of the scene on the shore. A steam-tug guides the emigrant ship away from land; its red funnel spewing out the dark smoke, which spreads over the scene. The increasing expanse of water on the right places a physical separation between the ship and the quay.

45 It's an effective painting. The event itself has a strong emotional context and O'Neill makes it vibrant with his use of color and the feel of activity. Each character has its own posture and face and is further distinguished by their varied clothing and social status. I can imagine it would be hugely popular in an exhibit as it is designed to catch the viewers' eyes.

Apparently, O'Neill was part of a group that disliked the Pre-Rapaelite school. That seems odd as many of the techniques of brilliant color and realistic detail. Maybe he wanted the Pre-Rapaelites to take a strong social stand instead of dealing with literary and mythological subjects. That would fit in with the Charles Dickens feel of that time where the current culture 'should' have been more compassionate. Of course, that makes O'Neill a cultural idiot even with all his obvious talent.

74 O'Neil was also a novelist, though with an axe against the pre-Raphaelite movement. "These included his futuristic fantasy Two Thousand Years Hence (1867), which portrayed Britain in the year 3867 as a frozen wasteland excavated by an archaeologist from New Zealand. The archaeologist uncovers evidence of the decline of British culture in the nineteenth century [.]"

Sounds a tiny bit like John Christopher's novel The Long Winter, about the advance of the next Ice Age in the very near future and its effect on Britain and the world.

I think part of it was that crime was still so unusual that people *wanted* it stopped and had an expectation of the good guys doing whatever they could to stop it.

Society was eventually conditioned to accept that crime is normal, and that criminals shouldn't even be put in jail.

Not any more. When I lived over there in '88-'89, I had a nice two-bedroom place near the ferry with hardwood floors, high ceilings, and two window A/C units for $300/month. I'll bet such a place now would ask seven to ten times that.

I was offered a free Mk II S-Type by my landlord in NJ. I had to waive it off because I didn't have a garage. He also offered me a free sailboat from the 1930s. Looking back the best way to own an S-type is to replace the engine and drive train with a hot Japanese engine tranny and tune the suspension to balance the ride. This way you could count on getting to work in the morning.

Volvo has been pounding the safety angle for decades. I question whether it worked even then, let alone now. Volvos were slow sellers until they found a nice design style that looked a bit different than the competition, and they finally started building reliable vehicles. So basically, they started being successful when they started selling cars that looked desirable and worked well. Shocker!

I miss the days when they advertised cars for their styling and for the driving experience, not just for safety and connectivity. The 2011 Buick LaCrosse brochure emphasized the car's power and handling; the one for my '16 has only one page on that, but three or more on the optional safety systems and telling you how your car and phone could talk to each other.

Still, the Volvo ad you mention is better than the recent Buick ads with the little old lady saying, "That's not a Buick!!" or with twentysomethings going "I don't see a Buick" when it's right in front of them (because, we are supposed to conclude, of their preconceptions of what a "Buick" looks like).

Apparently Paul Newman liked them too. He had one 740 wagon that he swapped the engine from a Buick Grand National into, and another Volvo wagon with a Mustang V8.

I think Saab was connected in its early days with the aircraft industry, yes. Certainly Rolls-Royce made aircraft engines like the Merlin that went into the RAF Spitfire and the U.S. P-51 Mustang.

Dunno. I think there was a different crew at that Butler rally but do not know if that guy was bodyman for Trump there.

Trump's call, don't literally care as he has more motivation than we do to ensure he gets a functional agency. He literally has skin, guts, and life on the line while the peanut gallery has none.

Too much of Conservative Media as well as the MSM is simply promoting individual agendas rather than anything resembling factual evidence.

That includes the story about Mike Rogers being considered for FBI chief.

We shall have to simply wait and see and as I said, Trump and his family's life, liberty, and property rests on making the right calls. So he has a lot more at risk from bad ones than we do.

For myself, I am simply glad that Kamala nor Biden will continue their rampage of destruction for a time.

270 I have a Craigslist ad from ten or so years ago where a guy was selling an XJ-6. I kept it as a reminder not to do stupid stuff. He tells all the things he's done to it, has a box of receipts, how much money he's put into it, etc., and wants something like $2000 for it and you'll need a tow truck to get it home.

Heh. I remember, a few years ago, attending the Mitch Silver car auction at Ft. McDowell Casino near Scottsdale. They ran through a '70's-something Jaguar with a bad transmission; went for $700. The auctioneer said, "Sold! As long as you promise to never bring that car here again". the crowd all laughed. Buyer probably parted it out, and sold the rear end to a hot rod shop.
