Range report.
It's been over a month, so I was expecting the worst. Took my easiest pistol for me to shoot, the Walther PPQ. Didn't take too long to settle down and start putting rounds through the same hole. Concentrated on trigger pull, calm, smooth, straight back. Finished with plinking the Ruger Mark IV. I love how it's so decompressing after a week of loony tunes in Seattle being, well, looney. I don't know about that guy's stance though. I seem to recall a few Range Rambo's standing straight up with their feet together. Here's a reminder that apparently I need reminding of - if your gun oriented equipment runs on batteries, check them frequently and replace them on a regular basis.
Today's range trip we decided to run some of our house guns because we need to make sure they are in good stead and to rotate the stuff we shoot. One of the Ruger P95s resides in one of those hide-away-shelf thingies and the RFID card made it go beep beep beep and nothing else. It SHOULD go beeep and open. There is a way to attach an external battery pack and I got it open and replaced the batteries in the shelf thingy. This was a better time to find out about that some other time. Last week, someone mentioned the TX MoMe badges and how they didn't work very well as badges and attempted to save me some bruising on my ego. As the designer of those badges, mine was the first one made and it was also (as it happens) the first one lost at the MoMe. My sweetie was able to find the one I lost and it definitely works better than as a memento than as a name badge. In fact, by Saturday afternoon I'd given up and was just using one of the adhesive name tags that were available.
I don't know if I'll do badges for 2025, but if I do I'll have some other arrangement to hold it on to folks. There's no need to salve my ego (my day job is working on stuff that matters and those guys don't pull any of their punches when I screw up) I just ask that you not give me more than the usual level of crap associated with public screw ups. Pew Pew Tactical guy did NOT do a "low-ready" stance there at the end (IMO). He dropped the gun with his arms still straight. So his gun is pointing at the floor. It is nowhere near "ready" to engage another target at that point.
He should bend his arms so the handgun is still pointed in the direction of his targets. The upper arms descend from his shoulders, then from the elbow to muzzle is horizontal and can engage at any time from that position or anywhere up to a full stance. Posted by: GWB at November 17, 2024 07:12 PM (M+Nrs) 27
Also, while I understand why everyone loves the 2-handed grip, it would be nice to at least acknowledge stances that use a 1-handed grip.

No range report this week. However, I did make the acquaintance of a fellow retired Marine who is involved in long range shooting. I suspect if I mentioned his name, Weasel would know him.
For the interest of members of the Horde in the NoVa area, this is what he has to say about the matches he's involved with: "These matches are held in Culpepper, VA. they are very informal, but run same way as old time Marine Corps matches. Lots of old Marines, women, teenagers, FBI, contractors, ordinary everyday folks, but also beginners. They will hold the line up to help a new shooter having an issue and no one bitches about it. I have been that person 🥴. We have had between 15 and 70 shooters. There is permanent cover and there are benches for us old shooters. 1/2 Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at November 17, 2024 07:16 PM (Hdixl) 32

It had been a bit since we fired either of the P95s. It's weird that gun takes a warm up after shooting a different gun. We tend to shoot 5 round mags and pick up the P95 after another gun (or after not shooting for a long time) and those first 5 just go wherever.
But once you have done that it shoots pretty well. It was DMV MGC day so swa was there and shot it and first time it did not fully cycle - forgot that gun did not like her at all. But after that reminder she tightened up her grip and it worked fine after that. A year or more ago she would TRY to shoot that pistol and it would not cycle for her. Now she shows it who is boss! The rifle we shoot steel starting at 100 yards to verify zero. Then the targets vary out to 1100 yards and back with the last target being #%*~# eggs hanging on a string usually about a yard long. You get two shots at each target. Entry is $25. After you have gone through one time and if there is an open spot, you can go through again, no additional fee. I’ve gone through as many as three times. Rifle calibers run from 6mm and 300win mag. No 338 Lapua 🤢 save those for the mile match, $50. The .22 match runs pretty much the same way and so far we have only gone out to 320 yards." If anyone is interested, I can put you in touch with him. So, range report, failure edition. (seems to be a habit lately)
Anyway, I bought a new bipod, Sinclair F Class. I got it set up to work with 1,000 yard rifle and headed to the range. I made sure of zero and the bipod seemed to get the job done quite well. (low round count on this trip) Groovy. Headed to the match Saturday and, naturally, it was a wonderful day for shooting. Conditions were such there were no excuses for not performing. Yeah, guess what happened. The few rounds downrange the day before with the new bipod were not enough. The day was such I should have shot mid nineties. I failed all the way to last place and a miserable 84. Drat. On the up side, the guy I smarted off to about beating with a 30.06 the weekend before made sure to point out he whooped me with a bullet that was half the weight and slower than the .06. I laughed, shook his hand and said, "I knew I was going to pay for that remark." Anyway, I'm aware of where things are off, so, next Friday will be DA recording, writing elevations for the silhouette match and taking the rifle out to 200 yards on paper. Small group for today's meeting of the MGC. Just Blaster, SRA Blaster, Ed L and me. Range was pretty quiet so we had no trouble getting on lanes immediately. Wanted to again try the fancy 130 grain ammo in the Glocks as it seemed to perform better last time meaning no jams. So, of course, the more expensive ammo definitely worked better right after I just received an order of the stuff that used to work.
I shot mostly longer distances 7, 10,15 yds and was satidfied as long as I remembered to grip properly. Focused on that and it really helped when shooting Ed's P99. Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at November 17, 2024 07:27 PM (t/2Uw) 64

Hello, Weasel! Range activity consisted of taking my H&K Mark 23 w/ its new B&T Mark 23 suppressor for a test drive with Blaster, SRA Blaster, and Sharon (williow's apprentice). This combination's reputation for accuracy is confirmed. SRA Blaster and myself shot 2" - 2.5" groups offhand at 15 yards. The B&T suppressor is very effective at cutting down the noise, even on an indoor range. Downsides are that the suppressor pushes a noticeable amount of gas into the user's face, the balance of this "crew served pistol" (it's as long as your arm from your elbow to your fingertips) is off, and the very THICC grips for the double stack .45 ACP magazine. Since Knight's Armament has stopped making the OEM suppressor issued to SOCOM, B&T is next best thing available right now. B&T made its Mark 23 suppressor for the Euro market, but began making some in the US after KAC ended production of its suppressor.

Anyway, I ordered one today from the Glock Store. Either birthday or Christmas for DILIT. As far as DILIT is concerned, she and Jr. are in Hawaii right now. Jr. has something for her that will be a big hit at her family thanksgiving. Posted by: RI Red at November 17, 2024 07:26 PM (wqLUo) swa's Glock is a G48 which is narrower than most of the other Glocks so the tool does not work well on it. I could make it work, but it is easier for me to just pull the slide stop down with my fingers than it was with the tool, because I had to squeeze it in to fit and that was harder than just pulling it down. I am going to try it with a standard width Glock to see if it is easier to use. But I am going to put my CAD 3d printing hat on to see if I can make one for the G48. There are stl files for a standard sized Glock but I haven't seen one for the G48/43. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at November 17, 2024 07:31 PM (QfvaV) 76

Being able to place a metal object and then having it embedded in the printed part would be awesome. Posted by: haffhowershower at November 17, 2024 07:43 PM No. In general, obstacle detection in robotics (which is what you're talking about) is an extremely hard problem. The badges in question were actually printed around magnets, but that's done by making the design with voids and then telling the slicer to stop at the top of the void so you can put the magnet in, and then you tell it to go on with the rest of it. The big problem was that there's roughly half a millimeter between the neodymium magnets I used and the end of the material and then another half millimeter between the washers in the backs and the end of the plastic. The whole technique was excessively fiddly which is the real reason I won't do it that way again. You can, however, use similar techniques to reinforce printed parts. I've been thinking about how to make improvements to 3d printed pistols, and that's part of the approach. Posted by: Cybersmythe at November 17, 2024 07:55 PM (iZEhM) 138

Posted by: Oddbob at November 17, 2024 07:48 PM (/y8xj) --- There are two versions, one that is not considered safe to shoot, and the later variant where they upgrade it and they are fine to shoot. Very important to read the description to see which one you are looking at. The Camp Perry store had some really nice ones that were good go to. One very important thing to do: READ THE TAG. Rifles do migrate from the wrong rack. The one I got was rack grade, partially rebuilt with Beretta parts, but is very slick. Everyone in the store agreed I had found the pick of the litter. My daughter (who came with my) still was pining for an M1917. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at November 17, 2024 07:55 PM (llXky) 140

“ My Sig Sauer Mosquito .22 LR has too many instances when the case doesn't clear the ejection port. Any ideas to improve the reliability.”
That model is blowback operated. Above all else you need to clean and lube the shit out of it. Get yourself some Slip 2000 EWL. Also use good ammo like CCI Stingers or even the “Stangers” which produce a higher muzzle velocity. That little extra will make it more reliable. YMMV Posted by: Marcus T at November 17, 2024 07:59 PM (WT51m) 145
Weasel, do you think the added performance of heavier 5.56mm ammo (i.e. greater than the 62 grain "green tip" GI standard) at 300 yards and greater justify its additional cost for non-expert shooters in the AR-15 platform? I keep reading articles that say heavier bullets deliver more accuracy than green tip ammo because they resist wind drift better over distance. But given my difficulty in accessing ranges w/ the longer range required to shoot for distance and low skill level at using the optics required to reach out that far w/ 5.56mm, am I better off just using cheaper 55 grain ammo until I address range access and skill w/ optics first? I don't want to adjust my zero on an indoor range only to find out later that I goofed it up at one of the rare opportunities I get to shoot outdoors.

Howdy, y'all. Seen that post over at Insty where he discusses the police qualification drills using paper targets and stopwatches?
It's all low-count ammo. The first one described uses the standard torso-plus-heat target, ten shots taken in total, first two within 1.5 seconds at ten feet, second two within 2 seconds at 20 feet, etc., etc. Ten is inner, second rim out is 9, you gotta score a min of 80 with your ten rounds. One later pan in he sequence involves two rounds then a mag change and two more, this inside 6 seconds. Sounds like a fun challenge. In Bakersfield, CA, every patrolman has to score a min of 80 once monthly using duty gear, no warmups. Posted by: Mr Gaga at November 17, 2024 08:03 PM (ZtgZZ) 152

I just used the Glock takedown tool - this url should be short enough:
https://www.glockstore.com/Slide-Removal-Tool On a PSA dagger which is pretty much a G19 clone - IOW its standard Glock width. The take down tool works excellently. You don't even have to do the weird grip to partially pull the slide back thing - you just pull or push down while squeezing and the slide will come right off. It needs a narrower version to work on the G48/43. I can probably do that I just need some time. Though I only have PLA and PLA+ filament and it would be better with a more flexible material. Got to get to the range finally. With vacations and chest colds, I missed the last few Saturdays. So it very good to put some holes in paper yesterday.
I tested my Taurus G3c TORO with 147 JHP rounds. This was the pistol and ammo I took with me to Florida. I didn't really need it but, that's also true of my first aid kit. I took that too. Anyway, for a ~$200 pistol that G3c really performs well. Fed the JHP rounds no problem sufficiently accurate and the grip texture makes it good for double taps. Now I just need to add a red dot to it. Because I'm old. May also look into an IWB holster for it too. Normally it's my winter pocket carry. If you want a slick .22 LR autoloader, the Beretta Cheetah is the ne plus ultra. Back in the days when Hogmartin still dwelt in the Mitten, we did a mini MiMoMe and it was the belle of the ball. Ask Eris what she thought of it.
I'm very fond of Berettas, and this is really nice. Accurate, zero recoil, wonderful. My daughters adore it, but because its rimfire, I can't be comfortable with it for self defense. Going back a few weeks, I went up to the Sultan Basin with Lazy Messenger. The DNR cops were there telling everyone 'you can't shoot there' in all the places we used to shoot. Only the quarry was 'safe' to shoot at. Not amused.
But I did get to do some drills. I also had my M1 Carbine, which I love for it's size, weight and handiness. Unfortunately, I had lots of failures to extract. I had to drop the mag, then cycle the action again to 'catch' and eject a round. So it has been permanently demoted from home defense duties. I need to take it to a gunsmith to see if it can be fixed, once money isn't so tight. New project: build an AR-15 that is as light as an M1 Carbine. And try to do it for under a grand. After the Knoxville shooting, Michigan authorized Guard members with permits to carry concealed in uniform. The PPQ was my choice and I loved it. An excellent choice. However, it also is harder to conceal in a non-uniform environment. I humbly suggest checking out the Charter Arms Undercoverette, in .32 Magnum. This is basically a J-frame .38, but it has two subtle differences. The first is that being in .32, you get six rounds instead of five, which is nice. The other is that .32 Magnum gives you exceptional performance (exceeding .38 special) with much less felt recoil. I tested this two weeks ago, and it's crazy how light the .32 magnum round are, yet they pack a heavy punch. The only downside is that .32 mag is pricey, though as with .38/.357 you can use .32 Long as practice ammo and save money. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. M855 or M855a1 typically start to drift a lot at ~365 meters and beyond. If your objective is to put rounds on target at distance then you want something heavier like the 77’s or a good compromise is the 69gr SMK. The problem is it starts to get spendy compared to the mM855, which is a good round at those shorter distances. But it was ultimately made for the improvement in barrier, body armor and LAV penetration. Posted by: Marcus T at November 17, 2024 08:22 PM (WT51m) 189

My cleaning ritual has degenerated. Ahem, I mean to say, optimized. There I was, using nice patches and specialized versions of Q-tips. Then I watched a video of Bill Wilson and, I think, Ken Hackathorn, cleaning with paper towels in most spots, and only using cleaner and brushes in a couple of key spots. I'm not quite to that point, but it's mostly paper towels now, with the M-Pro7 and brushing ritual reserved for the slide rails and the chamber and a few other places that show wear. So you are looking at cutting a couple of pounds off an M4 - probably a polymer lower and a classic upper flattop with a polymer rear sight would get you there. It was a very inexpensive add on requiring just a few more hours than the HQL(handgun qualification license). You might check that out, Grateful.

MAE, before replacing your m1 carbine, switch magazines and replace springs. Saco used to have a complete spring kit for less than 20 bucks that were original gi issue.
Mags for the carbine were viewed as throwaways and that tradition still lives on in aftermarket ones. Most carbines work fine with the original 15 rounds mags design, hit and miss with 30 round banana mags. Can be picky with ammo too. Not feeling well tonight, doc appt tomorrow. No Range Report. But, a Collector's Question.
Year or two back, Weasel featured a 1934 Colt Police Positive Target, .22 LR revolver at the top of this thread. Full photo array, all the angles. The gun is VERY MINTY, and ALL ORIGINAL. Including the internal lubrication. Which as all the slippery goodness of half-cured concrete. The grease has lost it's goodness. The oil has flowed back down to the well. Question IS: Would the hard-core Colt Collector want the gun as it is, gunked up lube and all, or would he want the gun fresh back from Colt, with a thorough Cleaning by Colt, New Factory Lube, and a Colt's Letter? We had an outside outfit in for a Shoot/Noshoot drill at our Parish for our armed team. Very interesting results but really no surprises. Most of our retired LEO members were slow to engage once the 'bad guy' drew his weapon. Very concerned with taking him alive and no injuries to civilians. The former Military guys were, generally, much faster to make a shoot decision and to then engage - no matter who/what was behind the shooter.
It was a graded exercise with e-vests and (weak) laser type 'projectiles' for team members, bad guys and bystanders. We former mil guys scored better overall. The bad guys didn't get as many shoots off and therefore, fewer civilian casualties. As I said, interesting. Posted by: Tonypete at November 17, 2024 08:45 PM (WXNFJ) 223

The WWSD people are off the chain on weight, carbon fiber upper furniture etc etc. In reality the 5.56 punches harder than the .30 carbine at most ranges and definitely kicks more energy in the chamber so the weight has to be "at x." That said I wound up wanting to add the Alumium buttplate on my 18" AR to balance it out because when you go too featherweight it throws off the balance a smidge. You can have a lot of fun making a "spiritual" first gen-ar-15 theory design. The AR is meant at heart to be a medium range iron sighted rifle. Jim, If that revolver has 1) never been fired or 2) fired only a few times, I think it might be better to simply leave it as it is. The original oil (or what's left of it) is mute testimony to its original condition. Hopefully you still have the original box and everything inside it. That's a couple hundred $$ right there. I've heard Colt won't service its old model revolvers anymore. That ended in 2000 or so when commercial production of the original Colt Python ended. By now, all of the gunsmiths who worked on the older revolvers are long retired. But do check w/ Colt on their webpage just to make sure. The number of gunsmiths on the outside who know what they're doing can probably be counted on one hand. If you do decide to send your revolver out for work, I recommend Frank Glenn. He fixed up a couple of my Pythons that had gone out of time or had messed up firing pins. Colt will still provide archive letters stating when your firearm was originally shipped and to who. Look up "Archive Services" on Colt's webpage. Be prepared to wait 90-120 days for the letter to arrive, unless you pay a premium for express service. But some hints from the listing: pencil barrel (natch) carbon fiber mlok handguard, minimalist stock even a lightweight BCG! Says extra light receiver set. That's probably what drives the price up. My combat lifesaver course I took prior to my 2011 deployment boiled down to these three things: 1) Triage 2) Tourniquet first, bandage second. 3) Golden hour for evacuation to hospital / shock prevention. If you can get a Army medic or USN corpsman w/ recent deployment experience, they should be able to teach a decent combat lifesaver course which focuses on what you need to do to save lives in a mass casualty event. They'll need some tools/teaching aids, of course. I'm sure Grateful can provide better advice than I can. Posted by: Ed L at November 17, 2024 09:17 PM (AiJK3) 271
I was actually thinking rivets. Not pop rivets. The kind that are forged in place.
Posted by: Cybersmythe at November 17, 2024 07:16 PM (iZEhM) I have a bunch of miscellaneous pins that I will never use. Like "East Woopwoop 4H Centennial". Action rifle match today, and they keep getting better. More action, more variety. I was the only one not shooting something made of plastic and aluminum alloy - my usual, the M1. As expected, performance was so-so, as I haven't been shooting it much recently. A few of us might collaborate and all shoot bolts next time.
Amusement is still derived from hits on the hanging steels, which sends them swinging wildly ("hit!" me - "are you sure?" - standard joke now). And in the point-blank stage of course the cardboards were blown off the frames, but they spotted me the second Alpha that I couldn't shoot because the target was on the ground. I'm in the middle of refinishing my M1's stock. It's a Blue Sky rebuild from the 1990s, so it's nothing of any particular historical value.
The stock is pretty beat up, and I am not the world's best wood worker, so it isn't going to be gorgeous, but it's an interesting little project, and it will definitely look better. My impetus was redmindbluestate's M1 that his father refinished. He did an excellent job, and it looks great. Mine won't be that beautiful, but it will be nice looking! Did fine with mine today in the short-range stages (I always switch from big to little M1 when going to short-range at these matches). At very short ranges I find that Civil War artillery sighting (just looking over the sights) works fairly well, very well if the target's not already saturated with taped hits, and I can see my hits as they happen. If I recall correctly the M1 stocks would receive multiple treatments of linseed oil over time, but it varied a lot. That plus age and sunlight gave them their rich dark color (both of mine are very nice dark GI wood).

And I also need to go to Alabama and buy another one. As you know, one can't have too many M1s!

CBD, I have no recollection. All I remember is that it was shipped to my door in RI, so it would have been pre 2012.
Holy Scheisse. That was a long time ago. But a brand new unfinished stock that said, “Feed me linseed oil!” Posted by: RI Red at November 17, 2024 10:02 PM (wqLUo) 356

And yes, hand rub gun wax. You saw mine a couple of years back. Almost too beautiful to shoot. Almost.

Ok, sign off time. Weasel, I know we all say it, but thanks. This is a labor of love, I know, and many of us really look forward to this.
