Mom Jailed for Letting 10-Year-Old Walk Alone to Town
"I was not panicking as I know the roads and know he is mature enough to walk there without incident," says Brittany Patterson. It still amazes me that six year-old me and my seven year-old sister made the two-mile journey to grammar school on foot and unsupervised, crossing a major boulevard in the process. Every weekday. Times have changed, and not for the better. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at November 16, 2024 09:56 PM (JkO4W) 25

In 1978–1979, 11 babies in Tennessee died within 8 days following DPT vaccination [43]. Five of the babies died suddenly within 24 h of vaccination. Nine of the 11 babies had received their vaccine from the same lot. A subsequent investigation confirmed a greater than expected relationship between Lot #64201 of the DPT vaccine and SIDS. Initially, health authorities "did not feel that a causal relationship could be totally excluded." Later, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a revised statement that "experts…did not find evidence of a cause-effect relationship." Finally, the CDC claimed that the SIDS cases in Tennessee that occurred shortly after DPT vaccination were all a "coincidence." (After this incident, internal memos by the vaccine manufacturer revealed a new policy of limiting shipments of DPT vaccine so that no geographical location would receive all of the product from a single lot, confounding the ability to trace hot lots that might cause clusters of SIDS cases post-vaccination.)

So continuing the saga of the dead cat, the details of which can be found in the morning thread and KT's subsequent thread. Long story short while I was on the road for the last couple of weeks a cat crawled into my car's engine compartment and proceeded to die. I found its remains late yesterday afternoon. Because I am a big weenie I made a few calls and found a place that would remove the remains at substantial cost. It was, I'm told, quite decomposed.
But now I'm not sure if I'm winning the battle of the stench. I changed both air filters and sprayed an odor eliminator in the cabin. I've kept the hood popped open all day (when not going here and there). I feel I may have to take it to another detailer to do a second engine detail. So this happened earlier tonight. Attempted to cook a frozen lasagna and notice it was smelling a little smoky. Open the oven to pull it out and sure enough, lasagna is blackened. Which isn't typical as I like lasagna and won't burn it to have an excuse to go get a burger. Well, feces.
So I hit the button to turn off the oven, and it doesn't turn off. I play with the controls, and still it's on. Fine. Hit the breaker, go to Culver's. Come back an hour later and flip the breaker back on. Within a minute or two the oven's element is back on full blast. Which means the controls are fornicated. And since this range came with the house, it's definitely out of warranty. Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at November 16, 2024 11:05 PM (lUFok) 199

-------- Not necessarily. I have had this happen, as has my BIL. The outside of the heating element is like tied to neutral. The heating control turns ONE of the two 240 legs on/off to control the heat. If the internal ceramic of the heating element fails, then the unswitched side of the 240v may short to the neutral sheath, which means it cannot be turned off with the control. It sounds like this is what has happened. A new heating element (cheap) will likely fix things. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at November 16, 2024 11:11 PM (XeU6L) 214

Have you heard about this? Anna Puma probably knows all about this. There's been a recent trend of a certain demographic going to places like Japan and making, or trying to make, viral videos of tormenting the locals, usually on the subway. The whole idea is to make the Japs feel uncomfortable around the antics of this certain demographic, and that's supposedly amusing ang gets clicks on tik-tok and instagram. Dancing, and acting like monkeys, etc. That type of dumb, unsettling behavior. Incidentally, shame on these platforms for not banning these accounts, and therefore encouraging it. Well, the Japanese had enough and eventually made an example out of one member of a certain demographic. But that certain demographic moved his "show" to Korea and began to torment the nice Koreans on the streets. Koreans, however, had less patience than the docile Japs. Concerned and fed up Koreans began communicating with each other and tracking down the location of the member of a certain demographic and chasing him off under the threat of violence. Police are on the Koreans side, which is nice, for a change. And now that member of a certain demographic is being prosecuted. Posted by: Soothsayer at November 16, 2024 11:50 PM (5uekx) 268

I am embarking on a new minor project. I have 8 LED modules out of one of those big "corncob" LED high-bay lamps, which had a failed power supply. Each module lights up brightly with about 17 volts applied, and pulls 200-220 mA. I am going to mount all these modules on the tin cover of a 3-foot fluorescent lamp fixture, and run them with a 24 volt transformer and bridge rectifier. Will put a resistor in series with each module to limit short-circuit current to maybe 500 mA. Will this work? I might even have an 18 volt transformer.

If you take into account that the voltage out of the rectifier should be an average of 0.637 of the input voltage, a 24V transformer should land you at about 15.3 V or so. Of course, you'll want to check that for yourself. I'd recommend a filter capacitor as well, but then I normally deal in stuff that produces audio and that 60 cycle hum can be annoying. I’ve an ancient Adjust-A-Volt variac. Weighs a ton.
What I use it for, is a trick I picked up from someone on an RV forum board. Charging batteries is temperature based, the old school Schumacher 2/6 amp car chargers are among the best chargers ever made. But they are unregulated, if temperatures are warm and the charger is left connected it will boil the battery dry. Running the old school chargers via a Variac gives you a large variable DC bench supply. I can look at the chart and see that 15.3 volts for about 4 hours is needed at 32° F, say. With a Variac you can do that. Boost or cut as necessary and give a battery exactly what it needs. The modern smart chargers and blinking lights don’t always work right, and sometimes choke for some reason. Posted by: Common Tater at November 17, 2024 12:56 AM (lPSbt) 336

What is really genius, Schumacher engineers obviously “sized” the automobile battery charger to plus up 50 to 100 amp hour batteries. The transformer size.
With two settings, 2 or 6 amps. It is unregulated, but a battery will increase internal resistance as the temperature decreases. If it gets real cold - like Saskatoon 40 below cold for a week, you could connect it for that week at the 6 amp setting, it would maybe top out at 16 volts, which is barely a float charge at 40 below, but the Schumacher would keep the battery charged up, not frozen up. Amazing device, gets about 5 bucks at a garage sale. Posted by: Common Tater at November 17, 2024 01:05 AM (lPSbt) 346

Let's see.... 200 mA , 17V, bridge rectifier. Allow a volt and a half for the (2 diode) drop across the bridge rectifier, that's 18.5V you need to light it up. You want to limit the current to around 200 mA to keep from burning out the Leds, so... 24V -18.5V =5.5V. 5.5V/0.2 = 27.5 ohms Use a 26.7 ohm. It would be dissipating around 1.1 W. Either use a 2W resistor or it may be cheaper to go with two 13.7 ohm, 1 watt. With the bridge rectifier, you're going to have a small dead spot as the voltage crosses zero, and at 60Hz may produce some flicker. Most people won't be bothered. Will be a lamp for my workshop, so "pretty" is low on the scale. Will use some fat filter caps, too. And maybe a series resistor so inrush current to the filter cap doesn't blow the rectifier bridge. Job #1 is mount the LED modules to the metal lid; then I can play with circuitry to my heart's content. Night, Horde. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 17, 2024 01:13 AM (EOLxR) 349

The “converter” in the RV does not seem to so a particularly good job of taking care of a battery.
It appears to be a fixed voltsge of 13.7 volts DC. They take the (smart) step of shipping the units with a blown or missing fuse. Has 5 or 6 DC and AC branches. Sez 35 amps, but that’s probably distribution capability. Not 35 amps charging DC at the terminals. I wish. I noticed anything above about 15 amps DC is accompanied by a roll away cart, and engine start capability. I don’t need that. But about 25 real, honest to goodness DC amperes is just what the doctor ordered. I “piggyback” the Schumacher on top of the RV charger, and get good results this way. Awesome Robert. Mrs. Sock and I especially enjoyed the low clearance vid. Spokane has an 11' 10" viaduct downtown. I witnessed several stuck rigs. In my brief year plus driving career I always knew how tall my trailers where because of that.

Those $5 chargers can save money on batteries, but also alternators and other spendy electrical parts.
Defective batteries can hork an alternator over time. And, the reverse is also true. I like to baby electrical systems, and batteries are also getting damnably expensive. The RV manufacturers went to 12V DC refrigerators, and it will nuke a battery pretty good in hot weather fast. Beats buying ice. I can make it work for me, but I’m going to get two 6 volt golf cart batteries, big ones, and run them in series for 12 volts. Lots of weight on the trailer tongue where it kind of never hurts anyway. Posted by: Common Tater at November 17, 2024 01:23 AM (lPSbt) 354

So my wife and I are in Rome right now on vacation. First time in non-English Europe. Some observations:
1). So weird to see the ONT pop up at 6am 2). Both here and in the connecting flight in Frankfurt, everyone speaks in English. It's wild. I heard some people talking German/Italian to each other of course, but when you walk up to a stranger or business, they initiate in English. Not just in the airports. 3). All the Internet ads as I browse on the hotel Wi-Fi are in Italian. Hilarious given the above. 4). This is teaching me how incredibly effective the piholes I set up for home Internet are. Every single website I go to is an aerial bombardment of cookie permission menus and ads. Holy shit, I never really got how effective piholes were at improving browsing experience. If you don't have DNS blocking (I think Adguard? performs well too, for Windows users) look into it. It's night and day. Posted by: Qwinn at November 17, 2024 02:03 AM (T8isU) 368

Also thanks to polliwog for asking about Jules when I stopped by earlier and posted. Today was the best since she went in last Fri. They took her off of sedation and the ventilator and she lasted 3 hrs before they had to put her back on. It could have been better but this is progress. She had her eyes open and they got real wide when I came in. I could see J in there, I thought we lost her when she blanked out in the ER waiting room 8 days ago. She is still there and coming back, slowly but surely.
