Re: Whatsapp... I believe that Whatsapp is built on Elixir/Erlang, which has binary pattern matching. 256 is a bit, if I remember correctly, and thus you can fit many of those in a single byte.
With as many messages as Whatsapp is slinging, it makes sense to look for optimizations that can save a bit of memory, literally. It's like no one hand codes assembly anymore, except for very rare instances. Like Apple's memory freeing routine is handcoded assembly, because they saved an instruction--and when you run that routine something like 20000 times a second, cutting one instruction out of a 6 line assembly program matters. Something like a general 15% speedup just by making that one change. Posted by: SimoHayha at November 15, 2024 10:22 PM (KfVMM) 71

The limit in WhatsApp can affect how many network packets might be required for each message. Going to 257, or 65536, is the same - messages on the edge have one more packet. That means more bandwidth, and perhaps longer to deliver the message. If you have limited bandwidth in your data plan, it costs you more money, and certainly costs WhatsApp more.

One of the odd things about modern hollywood is there are literally thousands of actresses that could play the role better then Rachel and cheaper too. No one is going to watch their movie because it stars her instead of say Jane Smith from Cleveland. Though I guess $2M isn't a lot by Hollywood standards - Gadot is making $15M. Posted by: Puddleglum at work at November 15, 2024 10:49 PM (C26rB) The Philthy Flyers and Big Bad Bruins era. Some epic games. My favorite, and the Klingons would approve, was when Phlithy played an exibition against The Red Army team in '76. The game was so brutal, the Russians left the ice in the first period after a non-call on a Philthy player who leveled one of the Russian's best, laying him out on the ice. I'm not a Flyers fan, obviously, but that game they did us proud, beating the shit our of the Commies 4-1. Posted by: RickZ at November 15, 2024 10:56 PM (gKDq2) 190

The US 104th Division (Timberwolves) under Terry Allen also participated in clearing the Scheldt, along with the Canadians. It was slow nasty work. And it didn't begin earlier partly because of the failed diversion/distraction of Market Garden. Some think Ike's biggest failure was approving Monty's idea and also failing to focus his subordinates' attention on clearing the approach to Antwerp ASAP.

andycanuck, I've been lucky to experience some cool things over the years, but that time at the Citadel was among the best.
Just remembered a funny part of it, that night I had chatted pleasantly with some local girls at a nearby bar, and when they asked me which hotel I was using, they didn't believe me when I said I was staying that night inside the Citadel. So one of them walked with me through the frigid night when the bar closed. We approached the sentry at the entrance to the military inner sanctum, I identified myself and he cleared me to enter, telling the young lady she could not come in. She was amazed, but sadly I left next day and was not able to, um, exploit the capital I had generated. Posted by: rhomboid at November 15, 2024 11:41 PM (1m82a) 301

I've mentioned previously that my dad owned and operated a bakery for 25 years. My mom cut out and saved nearly every bakery ad that ran in the local paper during those 25 years. I enjoy looking back at them every holiday season. After my parents died, I got to keep the folder of ads. For Christmas one year, I asked my 3 siblings what their favorite items were at the bakery, and then I searched through the ads to find ones that matched those items. I then framed the ads with pictures from the bakery.

I would take the Citadel, VMI, Texas A&M and maybe also Virginia Tech and put them at the top of the non-military Academy schools for ROTC. A lot of people don’t realize that Texas A&M even though it is a very old state school well over 120 or 30 years old, but it was always a military school as As well As an ag school. Up until the early 1970s everyone at Texas A&M was in the core of cadets and it was an all male school. There has been a big change because even in the early 90s it had the largest freshman class of any college in the country so things change.

I guess I could look up the date but I think it was actually later in 1970s maybe 75 or 76. Ever today at Texas A&M the core of cadets plays a pivotal role on campus and pretty much leads the campus life. At least that was true in the 90s when I was there, I know things change a lot and Texas A&M. I knew not exactly the Texas A&M students today experience. But by comparison to all the other schools, it’s pretty darn conservative.

What I like to do, is mix up a couple heaping helping Tbsp. of Cocoa powder and several Tbsp. of Sugar, a healthy Pinch of Salt, and a splash of Cold Wster and stir in a cup to make a smooth paste. Heat this till nice and bubbly, don’t burn it, though don’t be shy either.
Then mix in the Milk, half and half, or what have you. Evaporated is pretty good too. Also, grated Nutmeg is really tasty stuff. The pre-ground is something different. You can buy these special-purpose Nutmeg Graters. It holds one (1) Nutmeg. Or Meg worth of Nut anyhow. Trust Me. Make a Vanilla shake and grate a big chunk off into that and tell me what you think! Posted by: Braenyard __________________ Nose rings are one of the most amusing pieces of jewelry. They are bright shining light of ignorance. Historically, you could trace nose rings back a couple centuries, but they were used on cattle to assure compliance. It's one of their most sensitive areas, and allowed the herder control of the more problematic cows. So, we have subjugation, control by the patriarchy and cows all in the same historical reference, and women wear nose rings not understanding their original purpose. Oh, and you can go back a few more centuries and see nose rings used to control slave factions over in Africa and what is now the Sudan. So when I see a woman wearing a prominent nose ring I have to laugh. It's like wearing a Swastika or the Lightning bolt SS because it looks nifty. When I was a kid, there were "lady finger" firecrackers. About an inch long, and maybe 1/8" in diameter. Made a pretty loud bang, too.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon IIRC from my long-ago yout', a lady finger was half a Black Cat. A black cat was half a cherry bomb, maybe. And a cherry bomb was half an M80. And an M80 was, what, a quarter sick of dynamite? Those proportions may just be wrong, but it was the lore of the July 4ths back when. Been a long, long time since I saw a cherry bomb, much less an M80. M80s could be thrown in the swimming pool, the fuse wouldn't go out, and they'd make quite a geyser. They also did some significant damage to toilets at school, so my older brother told me.... My best memory of Kyle Field (A&M): it was fall1980 I think, beautiful fall weekend, Baylor was 0-5 and sucked that year, the Aggies were 5-0 and talking about a national championship. Me and about 5 pals drove down to College Station, started drinking Bloody Mary’s when we got up, about the only time I recall being ripped before 11 am.
So we go down to the game, Kyle Field as always is sold out, about 96,000 Aggies, and maybe 4,000 Baylor fans in a little stadium ghetto they put us in. We were supposed to be destroyed - and then that Baylor team came out and destroyed them, final was like 36-10 or something, our small section were cheering and dancing and laughing while 96,000 angry and disgusted Aggie fans watched us in stone cold silence while wanting to murder us all. Well we were too drunk to be as scared as we should have been, it was glorious! Posted by: Tom Servo at November 16, 2024 12:20 AM (W6hoT) 367

That's my biggest beef with all of this crap in college football. It destroyed the natural rivalries. It's been slowly working that way for years but still. It sucks. I miss hating Pitt (as a wee Penn State fan). Those WVU/Pitt games were fun. They despised each other. Like the Hokies now so at least UV and VT still play each other every year but for how much longer. I expect the ACC with get PAC12'd at some point. Follow-up to the Kyle Field story - heard later through our friends there that the Aggies were so overconfident that the night before the game, the entire team stayed up til dawn partying, drinking, and smoking weed with a couple of the local sororities - at game time they were all too hungover to hardly stand. The A&M coach was fired 3 days later, which is why I believe that was the reason for their debacle.

One last thing about Texas A&M and then I’ll get off the subject. But one thing I remember about Texas A&M in the 90s and also for several decades before the 90s is that it was a conservative school. It was a patriotic school, but all of that came from the student body not the teachers. They had rules at Texas A&M on how you were supposed to act that were student body lead rules. They had nothing to do with the teacher, who probably other than the business or school were lefties. It was the student body that held the traditions together at Texas A&M and I think that is how old schools are going to come back if they ever will.

409, I will have to check that out up thread. My basic idea is places like tombstone come off as amusement parks, though I’m sure they have some great historical teachers there. I’ve read about seven books on Doc Holiday, Wyatt Earp and Tombstone and it’s really an amazing story. Not just about a place but about America. The thing that always gets me when you study actual academic information about the old west is how big politics was even back then it was Democrats versus Republicans and for sure that was the case in Tombstone. The other thing I recall was a very famous historian mentioning that. we have much better records on ancient Rome than we do on the American Old West.
Here’s a go anything you read about the old West was myth. From the 1940s on you had some people that really tried to do academic histories of the events in tombstone, but they got a lot wrong because they simply didn’t have the primary sources at hand. 278 The US 104th Division (Timberwolves) under Terry Allen also participated in clearing the Scheldt, along with the Canadians. It was slow nasty work. And it didn't begin earlier partly because of the failed diversion/distraction of Market Garden.
========== What gets Monty hit hard in the Monday morning QB sessions is the post facto revelation that the Scheldt was lightly defended at the time, and the Wehrmacht didn't seriously move to reinforce it until Market Garden revealed the strategic objective. Shoulda, woulda, coulda... Market Garden was really a case of wishful looking at a map and post-breakout optimism. And the operation still almost worked. Except for that word, "almost". The German Category B & C divisions proved to be capable of rapid and decisive movement to counter the airdrops. The SS Panzer units were just the ability for the Germans to quickly batter their way into Arnhem instead of having to pound the paratroops with towed artillery while maneuvering the mortars & MG 42s into place for the assault, thereby giving the British armored assault a few extra days of grace to arrive. Posted by: Quint at November 16, 2024 01:02 AM (CHy6B) The primary source for most of the stories about Tombstone and Dodge City was Wyatt Earp himself, since he ended up living in L.A. til 1929 and even tutored a young John Wayne. However, Wyatt Earp appears to have been quite a fabulist, spinning long heroic tales with he himself cast as the Hero, and it’s hard now to tell how much his stories have to do with the objective truth. The first legitimate academic study of the events and people in tombstone was dock Holiday by Johnny Myers Myers. He definitely got some things wrong but even today that is a good book to start with. Since the public record was so lacking compared to say ancient Rome, A lot of the new information comes from family records that were only released in the last few decades. On Doc Holliday especially, He came from an aristocratic Georgian family, and the last thing they wanted to do was talk about him to the public.

427, Tom servo, very true. For sure, you can’t trust Wyatt in his writings. There’s no question there. And there is a really cool book that everyone should read, called tombstone, an Iliad of the old West, but that thing is full of information as well. I was at a local auto shop who had some pretty serious old west magazines.
One laid out the info of Johnny Ringo's death as taken from witnesses, newspaper stories, and even those that knew him. This magazine reeked of heavily researched and weighty scholarly data. You could tell the people who were writing were suuuuuuper old west fans who wanted to be as factual as possible. Thanks to said magazine I learned things I hadn't known before and came to the conclusion that anyone claiming Ringo didn't shoot himself is either ignorant of the truth or selling something. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at November 16, 2024 12:26 AM (zdLoL) Technically not closing. They're merging with the University of Findlay. And apparently will still play sports separately. Pending NCAA approval, after the merger is complete, Findlay would continue to participate in NCAA Division II as the Oilers, while Bluffton would continue competing in Division III as the Beavers. This is a model that other schools are following successfully. https://tinyurl.com/2fznn8hv Posted by: buzzion at November 16, 2024 12:34 AM (aRLgQ) Looking at the Bluffton website - the student senate leader sports a nose ring. Supposedly Earp pandas book called my friend, Doc, Holiday, and a bunch of people paid him, but they really wanted to make the book about Earp. Was definitely an American original no one can deny that he lived along time and did a ton of stuff more than dark Holiday let’s be honest about it. But the basic reality if you want to look into the history is urban holiday were run out of town they weren’t considered heroes. They fly out, became outlaws to Arizona. That doesn’t end the story it really just begins it, but people have to understand that one thing. For sure, a lot of people in Arizona defended the Cowboys after the gunfight. And the truth is Wyatt abandoned, dark Holiday to die I think Leadville Colorado and the Wyatt story went off for another couple decades.

442, I know there’s a book called Ringo the man who never was in fact I think there are a few of them. I am not denying that Johnny Ringo existed far from it, but for some reason, he as well became this mythical figure that seem to be everywhere. Same with Doc holiday everyone considers him this horrible gunfighter who killed tons of people, but that’s not the case. My history studies basically focused on the Civil War and also western civilization so I came to the old west a bit late though not really late as I was always interested in it. A book that really opened, my eyes was the encyclopedia of Western gunfighters. Anyone with any interest in the old West should have that book for sure. The author goes to great pain to only a kill that actually happened and very few gunfighters actually killed a lot of people, though there were a few that killed a ton. Along with the book by Myers Myers, I would definitely recommend the encyclopedia of Western gunfighters, That book is full of information that you don’t get from the myths and the movies

449, hey Jim!, bat Masterson is in the book the encyclopedia of Western gunfighters. The thing that’s cool about that book is if anything, the guy plays down the gunfighters he only attributes gunfights they were proven to be in. I could be missing a few for sure, but basically Hickock and John Wesley Hardin were Stone cold killers, and most of the others. It was myth. Most interesting part of that book is all the different jobs these guys held, Very few held the official job title of gunfighter lol.

I saw road sign about project 2025 here. Unless you are in some lefty enclave in Manhattan or LA I don’t think the average American has any idea what project 2025 is. Bit when the lefties had some good lines like calling the SDI “Star Wars” Or calling bush, and Cheney chicken hawks, But this project 2025 thing is not resonating. Maybe it is simply about lefty UI wanting to communicate with each other because I promise you the average American has no idea what project 2025 is and they simply do not care. I do hope they keep going with it though.

I think the left thinks they can scare people if they use dates like project 2025 or the 1619 project. They just got their asses handed to them. Haven’t read it, but I’m pretty sure project 2025 is still something maybe one percent of the nation discusses.
