Lucas copied WW2 combat movies for all of his fighter scenes, and it worked because that’s what we *expect* to see, even if it’s not accurate. That’s why all the fighters have these screaming engine noises in space, also. Spaceships at a bunch of different orientations would be disturbing for us to watch.

When I had a short job doing illustrations for a sci fi game that never was released, I always made sure any time I drew space ships they were always at weird angles from each other, because there's zero reason for them to end up at the same plane and facing.
Another thing I did was everything in space has INCREDIBLY high contrast, its super bright on the side facing the local star, and very black on the side not facing it. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 15, 2024 08:12 PM (Hh1ER) 115

Its in all media, sci fi games they all are on the same parking lot, too. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 15, 2024 08:22 PM (Hh1ER) I had an SF game in the 70s that was true 3d. Ships teleported using telepathic females. Fight by stunning the other telepaths mentally. Starforce Alpha Centauri. Blood free until the Xenophobes arrive and start putting 'conversion triggers' into suns and blowing up the solar system. Map was nearby space to some 20-40 lightyears., Come to think of it there was battlefleet mars, that the tactical game had 3d, two ship counters on 2 maps for XY and XZ. That one was cool because the planets moved on the map and there was a distance tool to figure out how long it would take to get to a planet from another, you had to aim where it was going to be. andycanuck, just curious, why link to xcancel instead of x?
------- People who don't have an X account can only see the initial tweet of any multiple-tweet thread; or if it's only one tweet but has good replies worth reading, you need an account to read/access the replies. I don't have an X account so I use the Nitter types so I can read them and I post them that way for other HQ freeloaders like me! Also, although I think anyone can read the Threadreader pages, for some URLs [I think for much-more popular conservative accounts], Threadreader won't let you sign in unless you have an X account that I don't have. When it's a single tweet that anyone can read, I always link the real X tweet so the conservative account holder will get credit for it, seeing as Musk pays people for how many views or replies they get or something like that. Ever notice every space ship in Star Wars and Star Trek, all the sci-fi movies and shows, are ALWAYS in the same orientation? We never see two space ships approaching each other with one inverted, or sideways. It's called "making it relatable for the audience". Kind of like how every jet battle in movies is presented as a dogfight, when the last time that happened as a norm was the Korean War. Since then the vast majority of fighter combat is done with missiles where you couldn't get two planes in the same frame without them being tiny dots. My favorite SF thing like that was always the first Star Wars movie space battle scenes which were total WW2 right down to gunners sitting in turrets. Why exactly did the torpedo that blew up the Death Star have to be flown manually right over the hole? Reality would say it would be programmed to hit the spot and the only thing that would matter would be the independent range of the weapon which would dictate the range where it was released. Why did it work like it did? Movies, that's why. Posted by: azjaeger at November 15, 2024 09:21 PM (3/XaG) 296

When I was there they were working on renovating where the hookers did their business.
It was a very narrow path on each side of the stage-second story. It's like they threw it in as an afterthought back then. What surprised me is how small the place was. I expected it to be so much bigger. Been to Tombstone. Mostly I wish they hadn't paved the main street but I suppose the dust was just too much for the building owners to keep up with. Yes, it is very touristy. But still fun. The most interesting thing is that saloon that was supposedly c!osed and left alone til reopened sometime in the 30s or 40s. I do wonder how much is actually original and how much was refurbished when it was reopened. There would be a good 80 years on it since then. Hard to imagine that when it closed and wasn't that old that people wouldn't have mostly stripped it for things they could use. Not a rich area after the mine played out. The town survived mostly on government work and nearly collapsed til the Old West got popular enough again to provide the tourist base.

$1 Billion in a landfill. https://tinyurl.com/3fyfhya8 photo worth a thousand words Posted by: andycanuck (hovnC) at November 15, 2024 07:42 PM (hovnC) Bwahaha! My neighbor across the street from me had a Kamala sign up before Hurricane Helene bowled through the area. They did not bother replacing the sign afterwards. Another house in my neighboorhood had a Trump sign up after the hurricane that wasn't there before. On another note my sister said she was going to write in her friend who is a successful realtor in their area. She said she saw a lot more signs for her than the other two candidates, lol. She decided to vote for Trump anyways since while she didn't like him, she had to accept there's "no there, there" with Kamala. And it's not like her vote counted much, she lives in the south Puget Sound area. Posted by: Farquad at November 15, 2024 09:41 PM (CFMhl) 321

He told the story of the poker game where he was shot. They also did a cheesy shoot-out in the street afterward. Maybe I wasn't impressed because I can just drive 20 miles over to Compton any weekend night in the summer and see the same d####d thing for free....
