How are lefties you know reacting to the election?

latinx election.jpg

Have you noticed a shift in "woke" among people you know?

Yesterday, Ace posted two pieces which showed a contrast in tone among committed leftists (don't comment on old threads no matter how compelling):

From before the election:

The New York Times Publishes an Article Calling for a Color Revolution In the United States to Block Trump from the Presidency

Astonishing.

And from after the election:

We May Have Finally Turned the Corner on Woke

"Even leftists are now admitting that woke = broke."

Of the examples given by Ace in this post, I found it remarkable that the article by Maureen Dowd was discussed on MSNBC!

Then again, "Morning Joe" pretends to have once been something other than a leftist. Joy Reid, OTOH, thinks that Kamala Harris ran a flawless campaign and had all the celebrities. How could she have lost with all the celebrities? Our country is just racist and sexist.

Introspection can only penetrate so far at MSNBC.

*

Also included by Ace in the "introspection by leftists" examples: Matthew Yglesias has written Nine principles for a Common Sense Democrat comeback. Greg Lukainoff of FIRE notes from past experience:

I don't know if Matty teaches anywhere, but if he does, particularly in elite higher education, or in any number of departments, he would be needing @TheFIREorg
’s help pretty soon for several of these views. We've seen people get in trouble for far tamer.

Yglesias replied in the thread:

Definitely not a teacher but I was just at Dartmouth preaching these points at three classes and a student lunch and a public talk last week and everyone I met was open-minded and receptive.
Appreciate FIRE’s work and hope things are changing for the better.

These are points he thinks the left needs to adopt in order to win. This is why he is preaching at college campuses.

slow borin.jpg

A lefty who interacts with me online reacted positively to the "nine principles". But then, I don't think his heart is into the destruction of Western Civilization. He is working on obtaining dual citizenship in Italy. He accidentally undermined illegal immigration into the USA by revealing that Italian authorities are insisting that he document that he has never committed a crime anywhere that he has ever lived, and that he must become sufficiently fluent in Italian that he shows himself to be committed to the Italian culture.

And he is defiantly spending Thanksgiving outside the USA.

*

Re-emphasizing from Ace:

Is woke really over?

Well, it's not completely over, obviously. Though it might now be on the glidepath to death.

But Batya Ungar-Sargon said on Megyn Kelly that for four weeks after a Democrat election debacle, we're finally allowed to "say The Thing" that everyone knows is true but is forbidden to say due to woke cancel mobs' power.

Then that four weeks of permissible speech ends, the Democrat Party settles on a new orthodoxy, barely indistinguishable from the previous one, and everyone is once again forbidden to say The Thing that everyone knows is true. . .

So, Yglesias might still need FIRE in a few weeks? Hard to say.

*

From a serious critic who comes from the environmental movement:

Michael Shellenberger says he would like a reconcillation with the woke -- but only after they have confessed their sins and recanted their many lies.

Here's the thread from which Ace took his excellent highlights. It names a few names.

*

While Matthew Yglesias is out preaching to the left on the necessity for their future conquests, it might be a good idea to re-read the Wednesday Morning Rant by Joe Mannix and pass it on:

Portability

When Barack Obama delivered the White House to the most radical faction of the Democrat Party and then his people took over the major institutions, many assumed that he had remade the Party, cemented it firmly and installed it permanently. The first is true, the jury is out on the third and the second is increasingly in doubt. He remade the Party, certainly, and remade it in his own image (or his shot-callers' images - the difference is perhaps irrelevant). The pre-2008 Democrat Party no longer exists, and hasn't for some time.

But that remaking - despite how deeply its product has infested the entire administrative state, the corporate world and the media complex - may be its undoing. Obama's Party takeover on the back of identity politics of all kinds is a hard thing to keep together, and its fractures have been showing for a while now. Outside of the strongholds, the Party is finding itself to be a tough sell. Obama remade the Party, but that remaking was not portable. Without Obama at the top, it doesn't have the juice. None of his successors could do it.

Part of the reason for his lack of portability is the nature of his coalition. Obama built a coalition of hatred. . .

A step up from the "I'm going to kill myself" theme among lefties

I have a NPR-listening-type lefty niece who has not posted on FB for 5 years, but chose to post a greeting card type message after the election - from a black woman with almost half a million followers on Instagram. It starts out with MLK:

In "draft of chapter X, 'Shattered Dreams,' " Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recounted a story of his first flight from New York to London. The flight to London took over 9 hours, but he discovered that the return flight would be over 12 hours. Longer.

The pilot told MLK that the engines would be strong enough to make the return flight against headwinds.

Most of the rest of the text focuses on feelings about the election.

We shouldn't have to face these winds. The grief is heavy and it is real. Yet the primary function of an engine is to take the fuel and convert it into some kind of energy that creates motion.

The values we hold, combined with our grief, our anger, our disappointment, our fear, all work together. None of it is wasted. Feel it now. And when the time comes to take the long journey through what's to come, know this: we have the fuel. We are fully capable.

I think this is pretty creepy - to imagine that your "engines" run on that kind of fuel.

What do you think?

My niece subscribes to some form of "gentle parenting" which allows children to manipulate the adults around them through tantrums. She is not particularly demonstrative herself. Might this be related?

Waiting for some people to work through the stages of grief.

A few recent observations from X

Biden appointed some destructive advisors. Don't worry so much about the ones Trump is proposing.

*

Washington Post editorial board:

"But the realities of human biology raise legitimate questions about any notion that trans women should always and everywhere be treated exactly like cisgender women."

The Overton window is opening.

*

No citizen should be denied a government benefit because of their political views. In fact, the First Amendment forbids it.

@TheFIREorg will file a public records request to learn if this is indeed agency policy.

*

Bill Maher lectures the left.

*

Trump can't "capture" the managerial state - establishing human control over the Human Control Evasion Machine is a contradiction in terms

The question is whether he can kill it while retaining control of its territory, weapons, uniforms, legal & habitual legitimacy, etc.

The managerial state is dying anyway, there is no saving it

Everyone, regardless of their political persuasion, should want Trump to be as swift & successful as possible in replacing it

What do you think?

5 Woke woke woke; Left left left...

What I'm wondering is, how long is it going to take for people on the so-called right to realized, the problem isn't "the left."

The problem is The Uniparty.

And those who are observing the Republican Party bitching about Trump's nominations are merely recognizing the real problem, while so-called conservatives rejoice at "beating the left."

6 Morning.

Continuing on with the tale of the dead cat, I got a problem that might be simpler but I'm a fucking dunce so I ask the Horde.

So dead cat was in an advanced state of decay and my car was parked in front of my apartment all day yesterday. There are...dripping...on the space where I normally park. Now I imagine that a pressure washer will take care of this but I do not own one and also I can't get a hold of the apartment's maintenance cuz it's Saturday.

So, what do I do in the meantime? Dump cat litter on top?

7 I gotta admit that I'm quite concerned about the extreme displays of mental illness on the left. Those people look like someone who could rile themselves up to riots and terroristic acts.

8 Fantastic meaty content KT.

I don’t want a reconciliation with the left because that’s impossible… they’re liars and any uttered repentance would be entirely disingenuous. They’re never to be trusted. If it were up to me they’d never be close to power ever again

They need to be utterly defeated and discredited politically never to rise to power again

There is a lot to rejoice about.

For one thing, abortion won't be forced on Catholic hospitals. Has anyone noticed ammo prices are in freefall? That's a big win.

The truth is that confirmations are mostly theater, and Trump is going to fundamentally transform the landscape to make the Uniparty unsustainable.

This are the things I'm focusing on. Breaking open the Deep State and exposing its secrets will be hugely significant. The FBI has already been neutered and Trump hasn't even taken office! So many wins.

As for liberals, I think a lot are secretly relieved that the election wasn't contested, and have no stomach for continued turmoil. That's why MSNBC and CNN are in trouble. No one cares. The hate became too exhausting.

The only local-and-vocal Dem I know of is still driving around with his truck literally plastered stem to stern with Harris/Walz signs. It could be because he's such a supporter, or it could be because he's profoundly retarded and attached them with superglue. 50/50.

15 How are lefties reacting to the election?

Global salt markets are crashing. There’s a local rag here that’s basically just some tired old Boomer’s TDS soapbox. Pre-election he said Republicans were not going to accept Kamala’s victory because they are election deniers. Post-election he said democracy doesn’t work. He blamed the loss on the “far right” and Russia.

The left is not going to suddenly discover their wits. These are not healthy, sane people. Every time the left suffers a setback there’s a brief period of disarray, followed by a new orthodoxy.

The left will not stop until they’re made to stop. They’ve been pushing anti-white gay communism since the 1930s. They’ve very nearly achieved their goals.

In fact, if anything, the problem the left faces is they’ve been too successful. They’re running out of things to pervert. Trannyism has been a far left goal for a century; where do they go after that?

16 I’m actually proud of my daughter, who had Harris Walz signs up and was talking all about it for weeks. She’s decided to throw all the signs away and just pretend it never happened and never talk about it again. I’m good with that, I can live with that.

People, please adopt an abundance mentality. Focus on the riches that have been showered on you, not on the few things you don't have.

Their are thousands (if not tens of thousands) that must go to prison for violating civil rights under color of law, all branches of government, local and federal are subject to this law. Dawn dish soap and a hose is one option. Let the soap set for an hour, and make sure the gutter is clear all the way to the drain.
A pound of baking soda from the bulk bin at the supermarket, or a box of washing soda, though that is more expensive.
A box of dry washing soap, or a jug of wet if you prefer.

Willowed from the prayer thread, but if I could get some prayers sent my way...I'm estranged from what used to be my closest family members, ever since Covid, politics, and my marriage to someone they don't approve of messed up the groove. (Which I've made my peace with. But I always thought we'd be a close knit family and right now we aren't. And it hurts.) I got a bombshell of family news in my face the other day, and sent off a reply. Waiting to hear back. Praying it's read in the spirit in which it's intended and that it starts some needed conversations.

56 Lots to think about in here. But I will start by saying that Bill Maher is a doofus and an intellectual lightweight. He is at heart an observer with no philosophy deeper than "I want to feel better than you".

Talk of Trump maintaining the power & legitimacy of the Presidency while cutting out the dodgers of responsibility is Maher setting Trump up for failure even if Trump does marvelous reform on the executive branch. Set the bar high so that even if Trump does great things, he doesn't cross Maher's abstract threshold.

That points to the real political conflict in Texas now - Democrats are irrelevant, and no longer part of the conversation. It’s important to recognize that Cornyn represents a significant wing of the Republicans; call it the Chamber of Commerce wing, or the GOP-e. They are in competition with the MAGA wing, led by Ken Paxton and Dan Patrick. Gov. Abbott leans MAGA but he works to stay on good terms with both factions.

There are many who believe Hamas will not be gotten rid of, that it's possible Israel has already lost that battle, as it ramps up the other battles.

I don't know what's true and what isn't, but your analogy might be more apt than most realize: The enemy is dug in deep, and superficial "wins" are not really changing anything in the long run. You have to go far deeper than you have, and it's not pessimism to acknowledge, you might not win.

The left is in various stages of all that, depending on which person or group you're talking about.

81 The US, the UK and the USSR all were in bad economic shape in the 70's. Inflation was the result, and we saw that all of the states represented by those economic blocks. USSR had papered over it with their centrally controlled economy that had massive shortages in consumer goods, so that the inflation was hidden, the UK ended a lot of the state run and union dominated industries that were dogging it down and allowed the resources to be reasonably applied to the real market, and focused on their international banking. The US did similar things, as well as the move to the PetroDollar, and the US outlasted the USSR.

I think it is important to ask what Reagan actually did to turn around the grinding stagflation that Ford and Carter ruled over, and if that is impossible to repeat, what is possible today to get those immediate results. 'Cause Reagan did more than just give memorable speeches.

There is huge pushback forming about gentle parenting. Especially from K-12 teachers, who are in the trenches every day with this nonsense. It doesn't mean permissive and it doesn't mean there's no consequences, but that's how it gets interpreted by lazy parents. A whole classroom of gently parented kids must be hell.

I’ve had this conversation on X with some Israeli’s, and have made a point with which they sorrowfully agree. Israel hasn’t made many mistakes, but one huge mistake they are making is withdrawing from areas in Gaza (which they do at the end of every battle) and not installing some kind of provisional government authority. Due to that, Hamas elements move right back in the day after the IDF leaves, because something, even a bad something, always beats nothing.

101 The values we hold, combined with our grief, our anger, our disappointment, our fear, all work together. None of it is wasted. Feel it now. And when the time comes to take the long journey through what's to come, know this: we have the fuel. We are fully capable.

I think this is pretty creepy - to imagine that your "engines" run on that kind of fuel.

What do you think?

I don't think the "fuel" is the issue as much as the values. Grief, anger, disappointment, fear can be powerful agents for change. I think the competing values are a reliance on God vs a reliance on self or men.

There's a book about this I read a review of in First Things. It points out that this really torments kids, because what they crave is order and structure, and having to figure out every part of their lives is confusing and exhausting.

Gentle parenting inevitably leads to counseling later on. Maybe they can pre-pay for it.

Based on my own experience (I retired 6 years ago but stay in close contact), there are bedrock rank & file, Trump voting conservatives who are STILL THERE.

They're energized at the prospect of being allowed to do their jobs properly again. There have been many reports about how happy CPB & ICE agents are, but that's just the spearpoint.

The deep state operatives are at the pinnacle, making policy. "7th Floor, " in the parlance of the FBI.

My point is, getting these numerically small policy makers out of there* should effect profound changes. The foot soldiers don't want to resist! They want to do their jobs; get on with their careers; and not be disciplined for insubordination by the New Bosses.

*Transfer, not fire. Most of them will resign before they'll move to Pocatello. They can also be transferred LATERALLY, i.e., from criminal to civil; from a desk job to a line responsibility. Again, lots will retire early.

195 173 Unlike last time the left actually does seem to be recognizing that they have to change this time. I think the popular vote thing took them off their feet, because in 2017 they tripled down on the insane.

This time they're going back to advertise on Twitter, supposedly the View is looking to add a Trump-friendly voice, AOC deleted her pronouns, etc. There are some changes being done across the board. They are actually showing signs that they are realizing that they went too crazy, too fast.

The virtue of Rogan's podcast is that he can have a 2-3 hour conversation with someone. The Commie Purity Spiral changed Rogan from a "Bernie Bro" into a "Trump Curious" guy.

Donald Trump going on these various podcasts has completely changed how politicians will campaign in the future. The politicians that are comfortable in their own skin will go on these podcasts, and the phonies will avoid them.

264 A revolution based solely on economic classes can't work in the US because class mobility is common and visible. Identity politics developed because even the Marxists could see that. And even that's being undermined because the racial minorities all want to be Donald Trump too.

Exactly. Communism comes in a variety of forms, differing based on the country it is trying to destroy. Or even within the same country: Stalinism was very different from Brezhnev’s reign. Maoism and Dengism differ.

American communism came cloaked in the language of democracy and equality, of civil rights and fairness. To see how far gone are, consider this: Democrats promise equality of outcome (“equity”. As a counter to this, many Republican politicians promote equality of opportunity.

However, it is neither desirable nor possible for the government to enforce equality of opportunity. In a free market, the only equality the government should provide is procedural equality before the law.

266 I haven't had much conversation with many people who voted for Kamala since the election. One woman I 've been friendly with for about 13 years saw me before the election She had a "Cats for Kamala " sign outside her house and I told her that my cat was too young to vote and hadn't expressed his opinion on the Presidential race. We had a very nice lunch out yesterday and assiduously avoided the subject of politics.

Another friend who I've only known for about a year can't stand Trump. I wrote a snail mail card saying they were probably disappointed by the election, but I sent this friend a word search about tea as well as England- both of which they appreciate-to divert them. I haven't heard back yet but my e-mail is down. I would call both of these people "old time liberals" and one of them voted for me for township committee since she lives in my town , so I suspect neither of them would be saying, "Well eff you" to me.

Pope Francis can cajole and punish all he wants, but at the end of the day, the Catholic Church has Sacred Traditions that go back for centuries. He will be regarded as one of the "bad Popes" by future generations.

Most of the "Tiger King" tigers have been rescued and relocated to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado.

It's a wonderful facility, they do great work, although sadly, most of those tigers are not capable of being integrated with other tigers, and have to remain isolated from each other. Some of them are, indeed, very sick, from the horrible conditions in which they were kept.

Disney managed to keep her under control nearly a year, when she went off the reservation again. I honestly don't think she has much of a future in Hollywood. There is a huge amount of electrical power shipped across border via HVDC power lines. California basically runs on power generated by dams in B.C. There is a big HVDC line runs from west of Edmonton down into Montana. It was originally designed to transmit coal-generated power. A 10% tariff on gas-fired power could encourage Alberta to reopen the coal mines, and restart the coal generators.

Heh, when a typo isn't a typo.

"Depressed" is definitely the vibe I got in my office. Not a word spoken, but a lot of heavy sighs and long faces. People tentatively, mayyyyybe inviting a moment of shared lamentation but not daring to verbalize.

325 I think an awful lot of the left bought into the lie that they outnumbered us, that we're just a small crazy minority, that they are on the right sided of history, that this dumb right wing thing is just a blip that will soon be over.

And they found out otherwise. And that's really tough, I've been there before in my life. It takes some time to get your head around, even assuming you have intellectual honesty and any sense of emotional control. Lacking both of those, you get either someone who has a breakdown or someone who just goes back to their old position as if nothing changed.

The only real solution is in Congress' hands. They have to remove the laws creating large swaths of the government, and the associated funding.

338 >>I am afraid that may be wishful thinking.

I was told that for the last 2 years about Trump winning.

Trump didn't just win a normal left/right election. He won an election for the people against the entrenched, corrupt government that has been lying to them and abusing them for years and he did it by galvanizing the people who are sick of all of it. Mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.

Look at Trump's cabinet choices. They aren't being chosen to run those places. They are being chosen to wreck those places and gut the corruption. None of this is going to be quick and without set backs but the whole point of Trump is an end to the status quo.

We aren't going away either. We've been beaten down, slandered and punished for no reason other than we wouldn't obey. They aren't omnipotent. We just beat them and now they are afraid. This is our time.

I have a friend I am eating Thanksgiving with who told me six months ago that they would never allow Trump to be elected, no matter what.

I just have to say this sort of thing has happened before. Two years ago, it was common understanding that Argentina would never find a way to resolve its inflation, and El Salvador would never find a way to solve the street violence.
