Tech News

  • The Verge is having a complete meltdown. I hope to see this continue.

  • OpenAI has hired the CEO of Twitter challenger Pebble. (Tech Crunch)

    Former Twitter challenger Pebble.

    Never heard of Pebble?

    Nobody else has either.

  • We have solved the problem of every device having its own unique charger. Now it's all USB-C. Some idiots still aren't happy. (MSN)

Don't bother reading the article; the author is an idiot, as I said.

  • The PlayStation 5 Pro has an extra 2GB of DDR5 RAM on top of the 16GB of GDDR6 memory it shares with the regular PS5. (Tom's Hardware)

Which seems to be a lot of trouble to go to for such a minor improvement.

  • SK Hynix has shown off 16-high HBM3E memory. (WCCFTech)

The memory chips are stacked up so you get 48GB in the space of a single chip, with more than 800GB per second of bandwidth.

That used to be a lot.

  • V'Ger phone home. (Mashable)

NASA lost contact with Voyager 1 - again - and regained it just a few days later - again.

Which is pretty impressive given that it takes about a day for a signal to reach the probe and for us to get a response back, even when the 47 year old spacecraft feels chatty.

Voyager 1 has apparently turned off its main (X-band) transmitter, but was still willing to talk on its backup (S-band) radio. NASA is working on persuading it to turn on the main transmitter again.

Disclaimer: Maybe you could give it a weekend off? It's logged more than six billion miles on the job, might be nice to put the feet up and relax for a bit.

9 My fancy new car has rain sensing windshield wipers. I fussed with them about a month ago when I got the car and promptly forgot about them. When you live in a desert, your need for windshield wipers is pretty low . Forgot about them that is until I went through the car wash the other day. It is a miracle that I was able to remember how to shut off the auto sensing function without losing my windshield wipers. I think I've reached that stage in my life where my brain is officially rejecting anything new. I didn't think this moment would come over rain sensing windshield wipers and I most certainly thought , if I did it all, that I would have received a letter from Social Security or my Medicare provider telling me that this time had arrived.

69 Rain sensing wipers . . . I had an early version of that on the '03 Park Avenue. The wipers had to be activated -- they didn't start themselves. But the system sensed the volume of incoming rain and sped the arms and blades up, and slowed them, as necessary.

My LaCrosse from '16 doesn't have that. In any case, if it does, I haven't activated it and so haven't seen that activity in five years.

82 Last night I watched most of Godzilla, King of the Monsters on Comet. This was the American version of the original Godzilla film, with Raymond Burr (the year before he started playing Perry Mason) as an American reporter on the ground in Japan. Partly I wanted to see it because Burr's character smokes a pipe in various scenes.

Anyway, the film is better than you'd expect. Not only do you get the horror, the human cost of the destruction Godzilla causes, but there is a tragic element. The young scientist who has developed what he hopes is a Godzilla-killing device is involved in a triangle: His long-time fiancee (arranged marriage) is in love with a young military officer. And the scientist is torn, as well, because his device or process may be dangerous to the whole world if unleashed upon Godzilla. Unlike in most big monster movies, one of the important characters pays a price for defeating the creature.

89 I was just in Ireland for two weeks with a rental car that had auto sensing wipers. Once i figured out what was going on with them, they were a godsend. Especially driving manual on a twisty narrow 60 mph back road in the dark. Not having to constantly screw with the delay as the Irish rain does its own inscrutable thing was very welcome.

145 Officials said up to 90,000 forms were submitted by third-party groups on the last day of voter registration before the upcoming election, far more than Recorder’s Office staff expected. Since then, about 50,000 forms have been processed, although some were incomplete and require voters to provide additional information.

This is so easy to fix. Google, Facebook, or any half assed competent company could have a standard online voter registration form that checks all the data.

157 Rain sensing wipers . . . I had an early version of that on the '03 Park Avenue. The wipers had to be activated -- they didn't start themselves. But the system sensed the volume of incoming rain and sped the arms and blades up, and slowed them, as necessary.
