Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Trumpy recovered well from being fixed about 10 days ago. Snowflake was neutered Thursday and has a cute onesie on. She has been going outside but I think she goes under a neighbour's deck and sleeps for hours.

Thanks to everyone for making me feel better about all of this.

She was kind of a dumb cat though. If she was eating, you could just grab her.

Yeah, it gets old. My friends now have all the cats neutered and fixed but the 3 females had 7 litters.....6 litters lived and the beautiful kittens found homes.

But even the home schooled kids grew tired. Kittens are a ton of work. I took care of the cats and kittens and it was crazy. Just way too much. I still have flashbacks....uuuggghhhh.

73 Will have to someday take photos of our doggies. Our last dog of our marriage was Shelby. A Golden we got to help our baby son's grief on the sudden loss of our Airedale (who was a story unto his own. He swam with gators). We looked for a rescue pup but son wanted a Golden, after searching all over. We went from a rescue to a show dog, rejected by his show people, who later regretted this as he was gorgeous. Pale English Golden breed. Not highly intelligent as others son has had, but the sweetest guy on earth. He had the retriever bred out of him but could pose royally. His grandfather was a Dog Fancy cover boy. I do miss his sweet self. My husband thinks I turned him ghey because I spoke French to him and called him Shel-bear.

Love the pet photos!

74 Ciampino's rescue kitties:
We have been feeding them some expensive kibble as they were throwing up a lot (some of them) with the old indoor formula. The change seemed to work but it has become even more expensive so tried going back - yep, the upchucking started again.
Much to our disgust a couple of the 'babies' like to eat cat vomit. By the time we get back with paper-towel and cleaner, very often the mess is gone. Well birds do that. I remember some actress also doing that with her kid.
Pictures in next comment -- no, not about vomit silly.

Eris, I once had a kitty like Lily, also a rescue. She was the cutest thing ever and she actually used to fall over when she did the kitty-itch, I think because her belly was so round and her feet were so tiny. I called her Badgirl because when I first got her she was sick and she wouldn't play with the existing cat. "Oh, that bad girl won't play with you?" I'd say.

She always knew when I was coming home by the sound of my car and my footsteps. She'd run to the window and start MEWing at the top of her little lungs.

RIP cutest cat ever.

When we first got Daisy, I started investigating Belgian Malinoises. One of the first things I found was that they retain their puppy-like energy for five years! Still a ways to go.

Fortunately, she's smart and aims to please, so we got past the chewing-up-everything and digging-giant-holes phase pretty quickly. Only a slight cost of shoes, rattan furniture, and a brand-new bra still in its package.

92 When we first got Daisy, I started investigating Belgian Malinoises.

We had a Malinois, Breccia, that we got from a kill facility in Portland. She was about 1 1/2 when we got her. For the next 12 years it was a battle of witts to keep her in the yard.

She could go straight up a 8 foot fence and get out. I had to bury cinder blocks under the fences and secure them to the bottom of the fence. She would lay down and act like she was sleeping while I would be patching another one of her escape routes. So as I would leave, she would "wake up " and go see what I did.

95 Afternoon, pet people!

Joining late here, but I have to say: Eris, Lily the thick-furred grey tabby could be my Dagny's sister or littermate or whatever it's called. Dagny looks a little wilder -- but the coloring and her shape and coat are very much like my little thuglina.

103 Eris, you told us the story of how you adopted Lily. Was it that she was at the pet store, for adoption from one of your rescue agencies, and you lucked across her one day? Or was that someone else?

Either way, to run across a pretty longhair at a rescue or pet store is lucky indeed. I couldn't find any cats I liked locally in '22 and expanded the Petfinder search. That was how I wound up with the kitten, four hours' drive away, who later became Stirling. (Something of a velociraptor in this own right.)

107 There's this cat that lives at my house.

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at November 09, 2024 05:08 PM (rJUaY)

108 Come to think of it, Nov. 9 was the day my mother brought home my first kitten, a red tabby w/ white whom we dubbed Rusty for his color and his tiny squeaky voice. He grew to be a non-fat 14 lbs., with the biggest green eyes I've ever seen on a cat, and was our devoted companion his whole life.

Mom had wanted a cat for years. But our lease was no-pets. Once the upstairs people, who would have squealed to the landlord, moved out and she knew their successor was not going to tell, she moved immediately to adopt a kitten from a friend of hers at the laundromat.

Mom didn't have a carrier, so she brought the kitten home in a paper bag. I got home from school, peeped into the bag -- Rusty was still shy that day -- and asked, "Did you get a kitten or a rabbit?"

Right, that's what I thought. My suburban PetSmarts and Petcos do that too. I dunno if polydactyly is *only* a trait of Maine Coons; if so, it would suggest Lily and her brother have some MC in their personal woodpile.

114 As for my menagerie, Stirling set a new record for individual times on my lap last Sunday, seven times. And the weather is not even cold yet. Little Dagny has been known to sleep on the bed next to me . . . but it's rare. She's up on the end table by my lamp as I write, while Stirling has conquered the dinette table and made it his (temporary) kingdom.

I leave early for work to avoid traffic, and so I'm gone about eleven hours a day during the week. The cats, I'm sure, entertain each other. Years ago when I lived with Arizona the part-Maine Coon, I was gone quite a bit while I worked two jobs and went to school at night. It didn't seem to bother him much; he really did not like other cats and didn't want another around. I guess he slept a lot.

Fen, there was also the story of how we took him to be neutered. He didn't start male spraying until he was something like seven *years* old. We didn't have a car or a carrier. And the vet was seven blocks away. We put him first in a pillowcase and then into a cardboard box. He tore his way out of the pillowcase within a block. Then Mom used a nylon string sock bag, and he couldn't tear out of that. My brother and I toted him in the box down to the vet, where he fell into a kind of waxy immobility like a psychotic -- he was afraid of strange people.

He did okay and came home the next day, walked as if still dopey all around to make sure he was home, paused by "his" favorite chair, and I lifted him up. He slept like a stone for three hours, and then was ravenous. All done.

The rescue agency in MS where I got Stirling was not bad at all. They did ask for a reference from a vet local to me. More important at the time, June '22, they did not insist on clot shot papers or a face diaper.
