REMINDER: Catholics can believe in the death of the Virgin Mary and also believe in her bodily Assumption immediately afterwards.
Posted by: Pete in Texas Yep. (from one of my readings) And, as Catholics, we firmly believe in the incarnation of our Lord: Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. Through her, Jesus Christ, second person of the Holy Trinity, one-in-being with the Father, and true God from true God, entered this world taking on human flesh and a human soul. Jesus is true God and true man. In His person are united both a divine nature and a human nature. Mary did not create the divine person of Jesus, who existed with the Father from all eternity. Yeah, it's a pretty tight circle there. And we love it. Posted by: Tonypete at November 07, 2024 09:42 AM (WXNFJ) 49
I expect this is the death of Mary as an old woman? If she were 16, say, when Jesus was born around 4 BC, and she lived to be 75, this would have been around 56 AD, about 25 years after the death of her Son. The men gathered around her could very well be men who had actually known Jesus when he was on Earth -- perhaps some of the original disciples. There look to be eleven men here, which would be right (Judas took himself out of the club much earlier). But were all eleven disciples still alive by the mid-50s AD? I thought Stephen had been martyred -- in 34?
Peter was supposed to have died during Nero's time, and Nero reigned from 54 to 68, so that sounds about right if he's still here. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 07, 2024 09:42 AM (J2vNu) 50
The imagery is interesting. Eleven figures surround her, which I think are the Eleven Apostles. Peter is most likely the one in the center with the book. John might be the guy in front of Peter with the censor. These are all guesses. The most interesting guy in on the very left holding the palm branch. Palm branches were symbols of martyrdom. If these are the Eleven, I wonder if that's James, John's brother, who was killed by Herod very early on.

There's no doubt about Montagna's talent but I'm not a fan of having the distant background showing through a portal or window. To me it distracts from the main image. I do like how each of the mourners are distinguished by different facial expressions, postures, and colors.
Perhaps it was a style of the time but the halos attached to their heads like a saucer balanced on them seems odd and detracts from the solemnity of the painting. Posted by: JTB at November 07, 2024 09:50 AM (yTvNw) 84

There's going to be a lot of Democrat navel gazing happening after this election, but I don't think for a second that they're going to whiplash back to being a centrist, people's party.
What's more likely is that the loudest and most zealous coalition in the party will emerge as the leadership, since they're the most united. Everyone else will be too busy squabbling and finger pointing. I wouldnt be surpised to see democrats taken over at the grass roots level by Bernie Bros for 2028. I dont think Bernie will run (too old) but a standard bearer for his socialist wing of the Dem party might, like AOC. feels very much like 1972, when the Dems were hijacked by doves and McGovern lost 49 states. 47 I wonder where this is supposed to be. You should be able to identify it by the large pier outside the window.
I'd say painting background is either Venice or Geneo. The death of Mary (sometimes called "The Dormition" for "falling asleep") is traditionally thought to have been in Jerusalem, so the sea background is incorrect (but beautiful). Tradition holds that the Apostles were called by angels to return to Jerusalem to be at Mary's side when she died - hence the frisbee-head guys). St Thomas was delayed. He arrived three days after Mary's death, and requested that the tomb be opened so he could mourn. When the tomb was opened, there was no body, and hence the belief that Mary was taken bodily to heaven. So Thomas, in his way, gave prove of Christ's bodily resurrection and Mary's bodily assumption (hence the name "Feast of the Assumption"). In icons of the Dormition, Christ is depicted either in the background or above, holding the soul of Mary as an infant in swaddling clothes.

Regarding the sidebar Bill Whittle...
I totally understand where Whittle's coming from as a child from the Age of American optimism, exploration, and innovation. The Democrats and various marxists/progressives robbed that bright future from us for eating bugs and the shabby vengeful world of socialism. and I feel so relieved after the Trump victory. Finally, finally after 50-60 years we stand a chance to rebuild that Age of America and seize the future that was our birthright. However, unlike Whittle I don't think we can start joining hands and tripping through fields of daisies. There are some very evil and malicious people who need to be handled with American justice and punished. Without a reckoning the Democrats/progtards/commies will continue on their criminal and treasonous paths. We don't need to wheel out Madame Guillotine and engage in wholesale revenge, but we need to punish those responsible and need to defund the left from any and as much public/government funding as possible and it needs to be done quickly even as we move forward towards bright future America. Christians are going to fight over whether Mary was perpetually a virgin or not? Gosh! It's a matter of RC doctrine . Either one accepts it or one doesn't or is not particularly troubled either way. Maybe we could instead concentrate on The Apostle's Creed which we all have in common unless it's the Nicene Creed which the Orthodox use Do you believe in your heart and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead? Do you want to follow him? If so, you're a brother or sister in Christ. And we don't have to agree on everything. As Benjamin Franklin said in another context, " We must all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately when and if leftists come back into power.

Another reason I’m glad I am off Reddit: I am sure that the anti-Trump hysteria will lead to doomsaying in the nerd communities that a right-wing SCOTUS will overturn some court decision they hold as an assertion of a fundamental right to their subculture. The emulation community will probably melt down that Nintendo and the ESA will lobby to get Sony v. Bleem overturned and make their hobby illegal. Movie nerds will probably melt down that the Betamax decision will get reversed. And of course, they all live in fear of the nuclear holocaust of their beloved Schrödinger’s cat “net neutrality” being definitively declared unconstitutional.

No. Dogma is the Assumption. Whether she died or not is not dogma. You are free to believe either. There is a tradition that Jesus said "It's time for you to come here." (Paraphrased) and she expressed the desire to experience death. She died. The Apostles carried her to a tomb. St. Thomas wasn't there. I used to be really into End Times scholarship (a long time ago). One of the major theories of who the Two Witnesses are supposed to be are Moses and Elisha. Together they symbolize the Bible, how the Law and the Prophets testify for Christ. I personally have no idea but I thought that was really cool symbolism and totally in keeping in style with other biblical imagery and allegory.

The bark-but-no-bite during Trump I hurt him and by extension, the country. Hopefully he's learned that in DC, there is no loyalty, only interests, and if you want a friend, get a dog.
Several people have noted that it would have been far better for the Democrats for Trump to have won in 2020 - he would have had a successful second term, but not spectacular, and the Republican candidate-in-waiting would have been - Mike Pence. But between his first term and having the election stolen from him, Trump has learned - he is a far more formidable adversary now. Dems are livid at Biden after Trump's win. Officials and party operatives told us that by the time he decided to pass the torch to Harris, he'd saddled her with too many challenges and far too little time to build a winning case for herself. Well, I'm not sure how that's Biden's fault. He was clearly planning on running for re-election the whole time until he was forced out by the Dem's. Was thinking last night about all the stupid unforced errors the dems committed to get themselves to this spot.
While the list is quite long, one that jumped out to me was not letting RFK simply challenge Biden to a primary. Biden would've trounced him. RFK would've felt heard. They would've made up. There was almost no downside. Instead...they pushed him (and ultimately Tulsi) right into the arms of the one guy who wants problem solvers, no matter who they are. It is a great day, isn't it? I have a weird question. I need to find a church.... ...Any advice? Posted by: Dave in Fla at November 07, 2024 10:30 AM (G/A+i) Step 1 - Pray! Ask God to put you where HE wants/needs you. Do you have have local friends with whom you have spoken about spiritual matters? If so, do you trust any of them? I get that you don't want to be a bible thumper -- but I do believe it is crucial to find a strongly bible-based church. Another thing to consider is viewing services online to get a sense of what is helpful in your relationship with God and what is not. If you are interested, I will gladly send you info on my local church, which streams its services online. If it is at all appealing, I can ask among our folks about recommendations in your area. We have a lot of people who know a lot of people / places. It is a big step to publicly ask about this. God wants to be in your life, and you have demonstrated that you know this. Prayers up for you in this process! Posted by: Doof at November 07, 2024 10:47 AM (N0dT2) 491

I'm certain everyone in DC knew that Biden was demented in 2020. For many years I've considered the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) my home denomination, but some congregations are rather lukewarm or dipping their toes in wokeness. In Iowa and Wyoming, I went to Evangelical Free churches. Both were unabashedly pro-life, which I appreciated. The worship style is more contemporary, not my preference but not something I worry too much about compared to preaching the gospel. The Reformed Presbyterian denomination is also conservative in my experience, but only sings unaccompanied Psalms. Posted by: screaming in digital at November 07, 2024 10:48 AM (JIkaw) 497

I spent some time on reddit this morning, enjoying the desperation, but it was interesting to see how much the tone has shifted since the election bots have been turned off.
Seems like a lot of people even on far-left reddit can accurately identify the messaging problem, but everyone is afraid to say something. "Well if you tell white men they have unearned white privilege, are the roots of all problems, and that if they have an issue with being passed over for colleges or jobs because of their skin color, they're racists -- it's easy to see why they wouldn't vote for you" was the general takeaway. LOTS of mentions of how millennial women calling gen z men "incels" in response to any of their (very real) concerns was of course going to turn off gen z men. Interesting to see. I have a weird question. I need to find a church....
...Any advice? Posted by: Dave in Fla at November 07, 2024 10:30 AM (G/A+i) Dave its not weird and let me the first to say "Welcome Home" even if you haven't yet chosen one that you are deciding is a good sign. Don't know what your family or cultural background is, or what your specific feelings are about how church is presented, but those things matter. If you think contemporary church music is blasphemy then don't go to a church that has it! If you want to have a familiar liturgical rhythm then look for a church with that. People will say none of that matters but I don't agree. If you are just new to it all and aren't even sure what to look for, then do some church shopping. See what's close to home. But I will strongly recommend whatever else with the church you look at, a strong children's program is important even if it is not something you need or will take advantage of. To me it is a sign of health for the church. It means that it is VITAL. My two cents. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at November 07, 2024 10:54 AM (QfvaV) 546

Posted by: grammie winger - cheesehead at November 07, 2024 10:36 AM (SfhV1) Seconded, for what that's worth from a gray box stranger. If you're looking for non-woke, you can do worse EFC. Also, many of us Bible thumpers are very friendly and not at all like how the media depicts us =) Posted by: NJ Class Traitor at November 07, 2024 11:02 AM (XfoBK) 606
600 Again, we're not dealing with Bond villains here.
We are dealing with mediocrities who have gotten their positions because of who they know. >>>The Left is being, for them, rather quiet, too quiet.
I feel that too. They regular libs are not to the pussyhat riot level of grief yet. They are still shaving their heads and screaming to the skies. The libs in the elite...they conceded way too easily. I thought the there would be contested races in PA and NC, lots of riots by now since we duly elected trumpenhitler. But nope. Something is up. I do think part of it is they feel utterly betrayed by minorities. Almost half Hispanics voted Trump, and 60% of native Americans. Lots of women and men voted Trump. Gen x voted Trump. They don't know how to bash Trump voters without bashing minorities now, or groups they thought they had in the bag and had properly brainwashed. 582 They are not going to course correct. If anything, they'll double down.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes Remember when the Left was going to be kinder and gentler and more positive and "tone it down" after Trump got shot? Posted by: ... ======== I think you also have to distinguish between public virtue signalling face on social media and private face. My wife is chuckling at reading all the wailing on Fakebook from muh stronk wimmen that she works with and knows (in education industry). Personally, for those not in line for direct consequences (like Reid Hoffman) and without actual severe mental health issues, most of it represents a childish tantrum by people that never grew up and never had someone say no to them. It is the kind of tantrum that children do including fake tears in order to get the 'adults' to do something to make them stop. It will stop when it is not recognized and ignored with the 'adults' simply moving on. The numerous people on the left with mental health issues though are the ones that will have some worsening problems like severe depression, etc. Posted by: whig at November 07, 2024 11:07 AM (ctrM5) 610
The fact is Kamala Harris is not worth it for the Left to lose their shit and riot /protest. They will express their displeasure with the Trump victory on the internet for a week or so but I think that’s it .
I do think though the Alphabets are internally planning action against Trump. I hope he is prepared. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at November 07, 2024 11:07 AM (D6PGr) 611

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth ========= The Alphabets tried and failed and if they try to off Trump now--they get a very pissed off Vance who has to go even more MAGA with his VP replacement for his own safety. They are not omnipotent and can be taken down--they can be reached and suspending security clearances for all their buddies in private land is something that will have repercussions as well. We are not Rome yet and the IC by and large are not really competent operators like the CIA or even FBI was in its heyday. These are the nepots and trustfund/married wealth babies--not the same thing. They have also been made soft by reliance on technology like intercepts which is why HUMINT is shit nowadays and tradecraft is poor. Posted by: whig at November 07, 2024 11:11 AM (ctrM5) 614
Serious Answer - stealing the 2020 election. And thats the irony of it all. They can't even publicly revel in it.
Funny thing there: BlueAnon has latched onto the number of votes being radically lower than Joe's 81 million (good) and come to the wrong conclusion: that Trump cheated in 2024 to suppress the vote (LOL). Posted by: Ian S. at November 07, 2024 11:16 AM (2ocoG) 615

You know, when we consider it, does any really want to click on the comments? Perhaps the comments don't want to be clicked on? Or maybe, throughout the space-time continuum, clicking comments is just an existential exercise in futility.

Posted by: He learned almost too late that Moron is a feeling creature at November 07, 2024 10:55 AM (7kSOl) LOL Well I honestly think they're going to try and emulate Trump with someone. So much of their hate of Trump is envy that he's ours. They know what a force he would be on their side. The whole world would be a gulag if they could find a Trump. Late, late, late Mea Culpa
Do like the spacing and perspective, the colors, the detail. Wikipedia, in part, "Mantegna experimented with perspective, e.g. by lowering the horizon in order to create a sense of greater monumentality." I guess, like many great artists of the time, religion and death were front and center. But I'd pass hanging for the very same reason.
