51 The Parable of the Rich Fool, also known as The Money Changer,[1] is an oil painting on canvas of 1627 by Rembrandt, now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.[2] Produced early in the artist's career, it depicts the eponymous Biblical parable. The model for the figure is said to have been Rembrandt's father.[1]
=====
He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I don't have room to store my crops?' He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."' "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 05, 2024 09:26 AM (EsZUh)

53 The rich farmer in this parable is portrayed negatively, as an example of greed.[1] By replacing his existing barn, he avoids using agricultural land for storage purposes, thus maximising his income, as well as allowing him to wait for a price increase before selling.[1] St. Augustine comments that the farmer was "planning to fill his soul with excessive and unnecessary feasting and was proudly disregarding all those empty bellies of the poor. He did not realize that the bellies of the poor were much safer storerooms than his barns."[3]

I just got back from voting (red-flags going up) and unfortunately, they moved the election place from my old location which was a retirement home served up cookies for each voter, to a new location which also is a retirement home but they didn't have any cookies.

Probably a good thing since today is also Dracula Day for me. I have to go in to have some blood drawn in a couple of hours for my annual checkup, so no need for prayers for me unless you wish to help the new location think about serving cookies for the voters in 2026, in which case if you do offer up prayers, I and the rest of the voters in precinct 18 will appreciate the thoughtfulness greatly!

My reading of it is, as a rich person it is easier to persist under the illusion that you can solve all life's problems and therefore have no need of God - there's a roof over your head, you don't miss meals, the money often buys social connections, etc.

YMMV, and it's also important to remember Jesus' answer to the disciples question, "Who then can be saved?"

"With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Part of it is the thrill from breaking a taboo. 60 years ago it was an affair with an adult willing woman now you have to go pretty far down the list to get to something society still formally disapproves of but...

Another part of this though is you only get to succeed in entertainment if you give the movers and shakers kompromat. So the reason we have so many pedos among our elites is they have to do something like that to be allowed to become elites.

202 Rembrandt is Dutch, but he cannot help that, and so Werner does not hold that against him. He is not Belgian, at least, and that is a point in his favor. The luminosity in this one is most diverting. It reminds Werner of The Night Watch, where the Dutch Civic Militia is depicted emerging from a dark background into the glare of daylight, on some mission of importance.

If this seems inconsistent with the work's title, it comes down to the fact that the work never had that title. It was applied by an English critic, after years of wood smoke and other environmental pollutants darkened the canvas. A proper cleaning revealed it to be an assembly of musketeers stepping forward from a darkened interior into the light of day. There is also an in-joke among art historians and critics about how Rembrandt's use of shadow reveals a romantic relationship between two individuals within the painting.

Werner will not reveal the details of this, but it could prove quite amusing for those who undertake the challenge of ferreting it out. A clue - prolific comics artist and all-around douche Alex Ross employs a similar technique in one of his Kingdom Come splash spages.

I couldn't see the other one,but it is the primary one and mine is only used when the pri.ary one has a blue hair asking g questions and holding up the line for some reason.

'Bama poll worker asked for my driver's license, scrutinized it for state issued watermarks and forgeries, handed it back to me after the checking machine scanned it, printed out my ballot ticket (registered that I had voted) and then sent me over to the ballot table where I exchanged the ticket for a ballot.

Voted straight Republican ticket. One oval and all done. No desire to select any Libertarian or Donl on any of the rest of the down ballot choices.

237 I don't usually think of Rembrandt paintings making a moral statement but he gets his point across with his typical brilliance. The dim (golden) light puts the emphasis on the miser with his intense examination of something. But the light is enough to show the ledgers that surround and hem him in. They are stacked haphazardly and so high it makes the viewer wonder if they will eventually bury the miser. The level of detail throughout the painting draws in the viewer's attention as he keeps noticing more and more about the scene.

The fool's expression is intent and he doesn't realize he is alone, with the implication that he will always be alone. A nice touch (if I have it right) is the cup under the single candle to catch the wax to be reused.

CBD, thanks. I hadn't seen this Rembrandt before. I wonder if this image served for Dickens' Ebenezer Scrooge.

291 Beginning in June 2024, Philippi told a confidential human source (CHS) about his desire to commit a mass shooting at a YMCA facility located in or around Columbia, Tennessee. In July 2024, Philippi told another CHS about the impact of attacking large interstate substations and said that attacking several substations would “shock the system,” causing other substations to malfunction. Philippi researched previous attacks on electric substations and concluded that attacking with firearms would not be sufficient. Philippi, therefore, planned to use a drone with explosives attached to it and to fly the drone into the substation.

In September 2024, Philippi drove with undercover employees (UCEs) of the FBI to an electric substation previously researched and targeted by Philippi, and Philippi conducted reconnaissance of the substation. While driving, Philippi ordered a plastic explosive composition known as C-4 and other explosives from the UCEs. Philippi later purchased black powder to be used in pipe bombs, which Philippi intended to use during the attack on the substation.

... C-4 and black power are a WMD ?

She is like the Ayn Rand of felines - if Ayn replaced Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip, coaxing Charley Brown to kick the ball, the results would be the same, except that the injuries to Herr Brown would be far more severe, and except that Rand would taunt the battered and bleeding Charley Brown, saying What did you expect, Playah? You goin' up against the Rand and you got youtself a lifetime membership in Ayn's Bitches Club. She would lean close and whisper Don't hate the playah, fool, hate the game. 420 I just don't see how (mathematically), you can hope to get to any kind of accurate number there. And that's if all of the polls being inputted are high quality. Which we know they are not.

I read the odds of say 4 polls showing a tie was one in 50 bajillion, or basically the same odds of winning Lotto 5

You should expect to see variance and outliers, not straight up exact same numbers between polls that use different weighting samples, models and demographics

425 I've been thinking about Oprah arguing people will lose the right to vote if Kamala doesn't win in light of the fact that leftists constantly engage in projection.

I know if Kamala wins we wouldn't have another real, meaningful election again - Trump, Musk, and all the other reformers will be jailed or given the choice to "retire" from the public sphere. We'll have the GOPe running Romneys and Bushes for whoever long Soviet America lasts.

But...is it more then that? For example is the Kamala plan to enter the Uke war and use that to formally cancel elections just like Lil Z has done? The forever war in 1984 was between socialist governments but there is no reason they couldn't run the same scenario against Vlad...

Posted by: 18-1 at November 05, 2024 09:35 AM (oZhjI)

***

That’s part of it, but I read it mostly as an exhortation against greed. People who have been blessed with wealth will be judged on how they use that wealth. Do they hoard it and think only of themselves, or do they care for their fellow man? Do they tend to the poor and pay fair wages?

Put another away: with great wealth comes great responsibility, and the rich will be judged accordingly. It’s much harder for someone who is poor to be miserly than someone who is rich, so that sin is one that wealthy people must contend with. Same as there are some people who struggle with lust or wrath more than is typical.

The “camel through the eye of a needle” scene illustrates something similar. The rich man is very devout, willing to do almost anything to serve the Lord. He believes in Jesus, but when Christ commands him to give away his wealth that is too much. His attachment to wealth is a stumbling block to salvation, just as we all have our own stumbling blocks.

Margin of error only applies to variance generated from random sampling of a representative population. That variance will follow a normal distribution.

It can't account for error from sampling a non-representative population. Figuring out how to get a representative sample is the hard part.

Which was the main thrust of my long post.

They cannot get a good sample, so their entire mode of operation is suspect from the start. So, they model, which they probably hang under the idea of "normalization", but that's not normalization.

Fun biblical anecdote: In ancient Jerusalem, there was an entrance to the city that was not the main city gates, but a small door. It had the nickname "eye of the needle" and to fit a camel through it, you'd have to remove everything it was carrying.

There's a reasonable interpretation of Jesus' words that don't mean "you're screwed if you're wealthy" but instead "you won't get to heaven unless you unburden yourself of worldly attachments."

Both candidates have been accused of tiring and skipping events, both have been accused of dodging tough interviews, etc. Now, I'm seeing both accused of "melting down" and internally accepting defeat.

I'm not sure who Tim Alberta is, but he tweeted: @TimAlberta Re: my comments on CNN and MSNBC this evening... yes, there are Trump staffers who no longer much care whether he wins or loses. Not exactly breaking news. Hard to overstate how terrible morale is inside of this campaign—and how much anger/resentment is felt toward the candidate.

And The Hill: Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz (D) declared Sunday that former President Trump is having a “thermonuclear meltdown” in the final days of the campaign, citing what he called “violent talk, paranoid fantasies and promises of retribution.”

I'm hoping we'll have some great on-air Dem meltdowns like 2016, to make all the crap we've endured worthwhile.

But somehow it works. They’ve been married 15ish years, kids, the works.

Sampling errors follow a normal distribution.

Say you wanted to test a single die, so you roll it 10 times, in a certain number of sets. (1 set =10 rolls, 5=50, 10=100 and so on).

By adding more sets together you'll get closer to the "true" average the die rolls.

The representativeness issue is that testing die A doesn't necessarily tell you how a different die B will perform.

Walked over to vote, a nice mile stroll.

Very quiet, maybe 5 people voting. The other party self identified by the wearing of WhuFLu masks.

Once again, the Erie County GOPe beclowns themselves: no signage for any Republican candidate.
They also supported every candidate for higher Court Offices that the Dems did. There were no Republicans running for the three Family Court offices ... but at least they didn't run the Dems on the Rep line.

I was surprised that there wasn't one Trump sign. Last campaign, his placards were everywhere leading up to the polling place.

Also of note was the fact that signage was noticeably lower for all parties ... election fatigue?

640 A mentally ill 40-year-old man, whose health rapidly declined after receiving three COVID-19 shots, was euthanized in Canada under Justin Trudeau’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program. Millions of vaccine-injured citizens are seen to be a “drain on the system,” so rather than pay out insurance compensation, the Canadian authoritarian Government has opted to kill off its own citizens. Under the new program’s assessment, the man was allegedly suffering from post-COVID-19 “vaccination syndrome,” known as myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome.

NEW: CNN's Van Jones says he is "nervous and worried" about Kamala Harris' chances in Pennsylvania.
"Nothing is making me happy about Pennsylvania."
Jones specifically pointed to poor Philadelphia turnout for Democrats and concerns over Jewish voters.
"Well, I’m just nervous all the time. So I don’t feel good about nothin’ and I’m not gonna feel good about nothin’ ’til it’s over. I’m worried."
"Philadelphia is where we’ve gotta run up a big margin, but Philly overall has been trending down, not in terms of going toward the Republicans, just people not getting out to vote."
"And so you got people out there like Pastor Carl Day, who’s got a bunch of young men with him knockin’ on doors, trying to get people to come out."
"It’s a bigger, tougher fight in Philly to get that vote count up than it has been in the past. That has me worried."
Vote, and drag your friends and family members with you.

Ideally aggregating them is what should be done. A crude average doesn't weight them properly by sample size. Running a Monte Carlo is a slightly imprecise method of combining probability distributions, which unfortunately like much of statistics seems to hold a magical status for a lot of people using them.

If he succeeds in winning back his old job, he will pick up the phone the first day and call… the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. And it won’t just be to chit-chat and trade niceties—Trump said he will inform her that he will immediately impose massive tariffs unless she does her part to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the U.S.

'I haven't met her, and I'm going to inform her on Day One or sooner, that if they don't stop this onslaught of criminals and drugs coming into our country, I'm going to immediately impose a 25 percent tariff on everything they send into the United States of America,' he said he would threaten.

If the die being rolled is weighted to come up snake eyes is doesn't matter how many times you roll it - the bias is still there. Only if errors are indeed random does increasing the sample size work to reduce them. There is no reason to believe that polling errors are random. In fact there are many reasons to believe they are not.
