Posted by: Roy at November 04, 2024 09:26 AM (z+ik4) ++++ It only looks that way to contemporary eyes. In this era, high-SES women were expected to - and did - dress like this at all times, barring a specific and unusual laborious chore. It was a thoroughly patriarchal era and women were essentially chattels. They had only two purposes, which were to be decorative and bear children. Nothing more. This is an image not of the regal pomp of special occasions, but of female subjugation. "Sit there and be pretty and make babies and nothing more" is not something to be celebrated. Artworks such as this should be in a locked museum, used only as object lessons for instruction on the topic of the evils of patriarchy. Morning, Art Folken,
Yes, they do all resemble each other. And all three are remarkably attractive. Normally I prefer long hair on a woman, but the short-haired girl kind of reminds me of Nastassia Kinski when she did Cat People. I'd think the Meyers would have been very happy with this portrait. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 04, 2024 09:35 AM (J2vNu) 78
This is a portrait of Adèle Meyer (née Levis) with her daughter Elsie Charlotte and son Frank Cecil. Her husband, a banker, was foreign emissary of the Rothschilds and chairman of De Beers. The theatrical composition of the painting, with its plunging perspective, perhaps reflects Mrs Meyer’s own passion for theatre and opera. By using studio props, including the wood panelling and Louis XV sofa, Sargent created an image of opulence and unapologetic wealth reflecting the status of Adèle Meyer in society.

Willowed:
Why do I get the feeling the Democrats are going to steal another election? The Democrats have to steal every election. They are not the majority party, and haven't been since the Truman administration. Gavin Newsome had to cheat in "Deep Blue" CA to keep from being recalled. Democrats are the party of malcontents with grievances, and that is not the majority of citizens. They seem like the majority because of the Press, Hollywood, and Academia, but that is a hot air balloon; a big object with nothing to it. The only way they can win is cheating, which means they are very good at it, since they do it all the time. This seems like a standard Sargent portrait: effective detailed props like the couch's fabric and the clothing, great use of light to emphasize the figures in the painting, and pleasant facial expressions. The mother looks happy and proud of her kids. Can't help but wonder if Sargent has a subtle sense of humor because the children look like they are hatching some mischief.

This painting exemplifies the commissioned portraits of the wealthy upper class that brought Sargent his fame. It depicts Baronet Meyer, a British banker and diamond miner with connections to the Rothschild family and the De Beers group, along with his son Frank and daughter Elsie. By commissioning portraits from accomplished artists like Sargent, wealthy plutocrats like Meyer used their talent to showcase their wealth and social status in elite circles.
The opulent furniture and the family's attire are reminiscent of 18th-century British high society. The gilt sofa and Mrs. Meyer's heavy, iridescent rose silk gown exude the lavishness of Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles. Sargent intentionally surrounded Mrs. Meyer with luxurious objects to emphasize her status as a member of the London elite. Following the example of the most successful Old Master portraitists, such as Van Dyck, Sargent used flattering details to highlight the sitter's best features. So, an early voting thought:
There are states out there that don't do election day. States like CA that's 100% mail in voting. Comparing to 2020 isn't the cleanest thing because CA wasn't universal vote by mail at the time, but it almost was. Anyway, here's their final early vote numbers from 2020: Democrats 6,157,827 Republicans 2,955,528 No Party 2,977,358 TOTAL 12,090,534 Here's where they are now: Democrat 3,373,048 Republican 2,075,558 None/Minor 1,495,393 TOTAL 6,943,999 Half as much overall, half of the Democrat votes, 2/3 of the Republican votes, and half the unaffiliated. Even if you just take the proportions of this imperfect comparison, R's are turning out more in farking CA than D's are proportionally. This isn't the assert that Trump will win CA but to paint the portrait that D's are just not nearly as enthused to vote this year as in 2020. In a deep blue state, in an election where we're told Kamala is the second coming of Obama...D's don't seem to care. It's like movies. Some directors make good movies and some suck dog balls. Posted by: JackStraw at November 04, 2024 10:20 AM (LkLld) ======= Sorry, dude. No, polling is wildly imprecise even at the best of times. The margin of error is a joke because it's the mathematically derived margin of error within one standard deviation...assuming the data is fine. The data is never, ever fine. If you're modelling data to get it to "reflect the electorate" you're introducing giant margins of error that aren't reflected. It's the assumption that the process is normalization, but that process is not normalization. Polling is stupid, and I want people to stop paying any attention to polling. I'd rather see early vote numbers from 2024 compared to 2016 as opposed to 2024 vs 2020.
Voting was such an anomaly in 2020 it's almost worth chucking all the data out of the lab. The entire nation basically became California for that election. Everyone had an easier access to voting than ever before, and it was easy to blame Trump (party in power) for Covid, etc. 2024 is more like 2016 in terms of the "normalcy" of the election. Even then, the GOP has a sizeable advantage of early votes banked with many voters still to turn out on election day. Whether or not Trump wins will depend on if his people are motivated to vote. Posted by: JackStraw at November 04, 2024 10:20 AM (LkLld) ++++ And public polling will always be bullshit. There is no reason for there to be both public polling and internal party/candidate polling. Polling is expensive and hard to do. There is tremendous redundancy in the polling landscape, which means one thing: at least one set of polling is useless. If the public polls were good, the campaigns would use them. The campaigns, however, do *not* use public polls. They have shockingly expensive and sophisticated internal polling divisions, and keep the data produced by those polls a closely-guarded secret. Why go to the expense? Why spend hundreds of millions of dollars every four years just to duplicate what others are doing already? Because they aren't duplicating it. The public polling is untrustworthy and bad, so they roll their own. The existence of internal polling is all anyone needs to know about public polling. Polling is not perfect, but should not be discounted. It's like saying that you should not invest in a stock, because you don't know how it will perform in the future. there are variable that can lead you to a good assumption about its future performance - financial information, market conditions and trends, makeup of the BOD, etc. etc. same with polling. There is data, there are variables, and smart people can put things together to make it work and make it somewhat predictive.

Polling has a couple of problems.
1) Right leaning voters are much less likely to answer a pollster 2) The number of people that vote and their ideological perspective varies significantly by year. So you might think you are trying to identify how many R voters from 2020 will vote D and vice versa but it is more important to identify what percentage of R voters will vote this year versus stay home and what percentage of D voters will vote this year versus stay home. This is very, very hard to identify Posted by: 18-1 at November 04, 2024 10:33 AM (oZhjI) 424

421 Polling is not perfect, but should not be discounted.
Posted by: runner ---------- You have to triangulate polling information as it is not dispositive by itself. You can get some information from biased sources but it takes outside verification through data that is reliable. Posted by: whig at November 04, 2024 10:37 AM (ctrM5) 444

Reality Winner is the woman, ex-AirForce, worked as a translator for some kind of intelligence analysis contractor in Athens, GA. The film recreates the hour and a half session she had with FBI agents in 2019 at her home, using the tape the FBI recorded of the entire session. So it's true-life, verbatim. Including the ums and the uhs. They had search warrants for her house, car, phone, and computer, and were after her for an event from June 2017 in which she leaked an NSA document to an online magazine, the doc allegedly documenting Russian military hacking voting records in the last day before the Trump vs Clinton election. So this alleged leak event was one month after Comey's firing, by Comey's FBI, in the midst of CNNs Russia Russia Russia assault on Trump. She was brainwashed and had an agenda. Her employer had two large TV screens on walls visible from her work cube, and ran FNC daily with sound turned on low, and she told the FBI she was bothered by the constant barrage of FNC. They are strong supporters of teachers’ unions, despising the very idea of charter schools and homeschooling. And yet they send their children more often to private schools where students are not the lab rats of the public school system.
Their ideology is the fruit of their privilege and so is often more utopian and abstract. Given that if it results in economic, social, and cultural damage to millions, they will certainly avoid the ensuing flotsam and jetsam. All the sources that can be found via google to to left wing rags. Nothing about voting machines was reported, and nothing about votes. Nothing about any kind of collusion between either Trump's campaign or Clinton's campaign was reported. Russia Russia Russia was all about collusion. Collusion was the word used in every CNN report about it. Tapper must have said the word collusion a thousand times or more on-air. Winner confessed to the leak to the FBI agents during the raid. She stupidly agreed to talk to them without a lawyer. Her confession led to a 63 month sentence in a Fed penitentiary in Texas, and she was let out about 9 months early for good behavior. As a convicted felon, she cannot find suitable employment. She is fluent in Arabic, Pashto, Dali, and something else. Harrison Ford ruined and killed off a beloved character.
Hooris and Walz will ruin and kill off a beloved country. Posted by: Sifty at November 04, 2024 10:57 AM (1gpOM) ++++ In both cases, it's not their fault. The writers and producers and directors - the behind-the-scenes operators - call the shots. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 04, 2024 10:58 AM (HnUIn) 575
Not supposedly, there is an actual transcript of their meeting discussing the age. I've dug it up online before but don't care to do it again.
That is my suspicion why Kathleen Kennedy is still employed as she has dirt on people that she worked for like Lucas and Spielburg among others. That makes perfect sense. Posted by: Archimedes at November 04, 2024 10:58 AM (xCA6C) 576

I watched season 2 of A Very English Scandal, about the Duke and Duchess of Argyle in 1963.
I realized that the Duchess Margaret was a bit of a precursor to Kumala, since she had a Polaroid showing her with an erect penis in her mouth. And it wasn't the Duke's wang. Posted by: anchorbabe fashion cop at November 04, 2024 10:59 AM (ufFY8) 578

Not a clothing optional day, today?
John Singer Sargent certainly knew how to keep his career going. The clothing is beautifully detailed but the family eerie appearing, very rich, possibly inbred. Most all those who heard the news back in 2019 about this, or most anyone seeing the film, would come away thinking it proves the corporate media Russia lie.

Eh. Epstein was NYC based.
LA has it's own separate cartel of kid diddling, I'm sure. It's been established since the 20s, you know. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, finding suspense, madness, and humanity with Michael Powell at November 04, 2024 10:56 AM (GBKbO) LA has more than one. There's the gay one, the "straight" one, the black one, and probably an hispanic one. Epstein of course had his branch office in New Mexico, and Lex Wexner rules the midwest from his fortress in Ohio. I know there are others, but some remain... hidden. >>I see the obvious tie-in with the Blowjob-Queen Campaign.
Harrison Ford made a career of playing men, the kind of guys who get things done, sometimes by the seat of their pants, but they are strong, dependable, etc.. No doubt they think having Indiana Jones/Han Solo endorse Kamala will help them with her lack of support from (white) men. This is so very desperate, lol!
