Top Story

AMD just made choosing a CPU much easier. Or much harder, depending on your perspective. (Tom's Hardware)

The 9000 series CPUs were - at their launch two months ago - overpriced for their performance relative to the existing 7000 series. They are actually great on some server-oriented tasks, but the improvement since the last generation for desktop tasks and gaming is relatively small.

AMD has adjusted the pricing to match. the 9900X is 6% faster than the 7900X on PassMark, for example, and now costs 8% more.

For me, good enough. That will be my next CPU.

If you're more interested in games or have a specific workload that loves large caches, the 9800X3D is due out this week and should also deliver great performance.

SpaceX's HLS - its lunar lander - is forty feet tall with space for twenty astronauts. (WCCFTech)

The interior is modular and can be re-arranged as the mission demands, but it is vastly, um, vaster than the Apollo lander, something like ten times the size. It would not be exactly roomy with twenty astronauts packed in, but it has a bathroom which is an automatic win over Apollo.
Apple's M4 Max performs quite well if your primary workload is GeekBench. (WCCFTech)

It will almost certainly perform well in real workloads as well, though not quite as well as it does on GeekBench.

Also, the cheapest Mac model with the M4 Max CPU costs as much as a maxed-out PC with a 9950X and an RTX 4090.
Speaking of maxed-out PCs the Asus ProArt Display 5K is a 5K display aimed at art professionals. From Asus. (TweakTown)

For $799.

That's the exciting part. That's a lot for a monitor these days, but it's not a lot for a professional-class 5K display. It's close to twice the price of the 4K model, but also has close to twice the number of pixels.

It's taken a very long time for 5K displays to become affordable. I have the 2015 Retina iMac (which I don't use much anymore) which has an integrated 5K display, but equivalent displays for PCs have been scarce and horribly expensive.

What does the rest if the world experience when Daylight Savings Time comes to an end in the U.S.?

One second the U.S. is there and then, POOF! it disappears for an hour? And when it reappears, folks here see all the jabbering fools wondering what happened or rejoicing because the missing have returned?

What slays those outside the cone of DST is when those within it simply blink and say, "Wut?"

7 Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals discombobulated by our U.S. time change! I've done okay -- I slept about six hours, as I hoped and planned. On my yesterday time line, this would be a little after four am, and I usually get up around then on Sunday to work out.

Hereby I proclaim Wolfus's Law of DST: There is always one clock you forget to change the night before. Last night I thought I'd covered everything except the kitchen wall clock, a pain to hang back up after adjusting, and the car's clock. Nope! The coffeemaker and microwave each have clocks, of course. One of my apartments in Denver had a timer and clock built into the oven, and I always forgot that one.

Most systems now run their clocks on UTC. All timestamps and internal timekeeping are done on Zulu. The only time the local time rules come into play is when displaying that time on the user interface (ie, Windows file explorer displays the modification date and time).

However, there are exceptions. The old FAT filesystem, including FAT32 stored timestamps in local time, not UTC. I was interested in that behavior during the period of ambiguous time during the change. There are two 1 - 2AM periods, a 1:30AM EDT and a 1:30AM EST. Without some special provision, there is no way to resolve that when storing only local time....

...Now, just as a test, I created and saved some files on a FAT32 drive here before, during, and after the ambiguous time period.

When the time changed, there were bugs, but in an unexpected way. Files saved before the 1AM window displayed 1 hour *later* after the change. That blew my mind.

Then some reading and I discovered the source of that bug. It's in the FAT filesystem driver of Windows.

17 Oh, and I had to reset the fourth hand on my GMT watch to Pixy's time. Australia just went to DST and we just came off, so my watch was set an hour behind. (Why set it to Sydney time? I don't have any other time zone to track at a glance. I could set it to GMT/UTC, but this is more fun.)

Same with my battery-powered wrist stopwatch. I leave it in that mode, but it also displays the current time in the corner. I never reset it in March or whenever it was -- so now it's correct.

In the latter part of the last century, the data center i managed required a staff of 5 to be on site to manually.change clocks and update scripts during the time change. No one wanted that duty, so we ended up paying triple time and making it prime rib night and guys would fight over it.

Yeah, the TV, DVD, and my laptop here all reset themselves. (Well, I *think* the DVD does.)

I'm having some coffee and perhaps some juice so I won't be too hungry. In about an hour I'll change and stretch, and head over to the track about five a.m. The sky will get light about the time I start my workout. The new M4 Mac Mini at $599.00 looks like a pretty great deal If your primary workload is cat videos and ignoring emails from your employer. Just don't buy the $1599 Apple monitor as that is sort of not a great deal.

For that matter I wouldn't mind if it got light around 7:00 a.m. and got dark about 4:30 p.m. Maybe, when I move to a four-season climate, I'll change my mind. But right now, less oppressive sunlight is all to the good.

Having lived in Seattle most of my life and the annual big dark, you will change your mind. On the flip side, living in the southwest now, I miss the late Summer evening twilights that go on until about 10:00 pm

Go to Alaska, Fairbanks, when they are on DST. Sunset occurs *after midnight* near the summer solstice.

Alaska, most of it is on UTC-9. It should be -10, so they're already about an hour ahead of where they should be standard time wise. Add another hour for DST and it gets crazy.

I may. After a long dark winter, I can imagine I would welcome the first warm days -- as I did in Denver. Yet even there I always welcomed the first cold spell, the shorter days, and the first snowfall. I worked outdoors in will-draining heat for too many years to think "sunny" or "summer" automatically = "good."

That has been done in the early '70s during Nixon. They tried year-round DST in 1974. A majority were all for it. Until the winter solstice in the western-most regions of some time zones where sunrise didn't occur until after 9AM.

That killed it, and the reverted. I imagine the same thing would happen again if they try.

The Michigan upper peninsula is the most western edge of Eastern time, and Indiana's middle sliver is close to it as well.

Michigan should be on central time, and Indiana too. The original idea was time zones should be centered on the given meridian and 15 degrees wide, for no more than 30 minutes off either side from local mean solar time.

But politics and local "flavor" changed the actual boundaries to what we have now.

I still despise the whole DST thing and wish we'd just stick to Standard Time because standards are supposed to mean something.

81 one thing about living in the sticks out here is that one can easily miss little things like the insanity of screwing with the time.
I saw absolutely nothing about a time change yesterday so I was a little puzzled when my wife called at 5:02 cdt to ask me to watch her weather as the tornado sirens were going off in Tulsa. I looked and told her the warning was until 4:15am so it was almost over ... and she noted that it was only 4:05 in Tulsa. Fortunately it was another of those "radar indicated" episodes ... so I finally talked her out of the closet.
Now I'm awake and resetting clocks ... and drinking coffee

I'm having coffee and a slice of toast w/ peanut butter, a light breaking of the fast before I head to the grocery in about an hour. Real breakfast, an egg and burrito maybe, will be on the menu after.

135 Not knowing much about Harris' actual trial background, I read the NY Post article this morning with interest, examining how many actual trials she conducted while a prosecutor in San Francisco. Between there and Alameda County the Post estimates she prosecuted in around 15 trials, though she would have had lots of cases the plead out before trial and she would also have been "involved" in other prosecutions as a supervisor etc.

She looks like a politician with a prosecutorial background, more than an actual prosecutor.

Ultimately when they found nothing in the search they killed his pets.

Now you tell me, is anyone safe in a state the violates the Fourth Amendment rights of its citizens by using friendly judges and state goon squads as a pretext to search someone’s home and possessions? The answer is no, and the fact there is a single person left in NY should amaze everyone.

By the way, the Clown Governor of NY just said if you vote for Trump you hate women. So there’s that too.

In 2020 they most likely adjusted, and showed Biden leading. A few days before election Rasmussen showed Biden ahead by 1, and by some measures, Biden by 3. 2024...well polls are saying something very distinct. People keep going back to 2020, because in 2020 they expected that the polls be off like they were in 2016, but in reality they had time to adjust and showed Biden over Trump by margin of error. WHich is what happened. a little over 81k across 4 key state. And now they are telling you a differenet story. And not just one poll.
