I stayed up to observe the end of daylight savings time by watching watch my cell phone's clock go from 1:59 am to 1:00 am. It is now 2:08 am on November 3.

What does the rest if the world experience when Daylight Savings Time comes to an end in the U.S.? One second the U.S. is there and then, POOF! it disappears for an hour? And when it reappears, folks here see all the jabbering fools wondering what happened or rejoicing because the missing have returned? What slays those outside the cone of DST is when those within it simply blink and say, "Wut?" Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at November 03, 2024 05:10 AM (h2tDR) 5

Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals discombobulated by our U.S. time change! I've done okay -- I slept about six hours, as I hoped and planned. On my yesterday time line, this would be a little after four am, and I usually get up around then on Sunday to work out.
Hereby I proclaim Wolfus's Law of DST: There is always one clock you forget to change the night before. Last night I thought I'd covered everything except the kitchen wall clock, a pain to hang back up after adjusting, and the car's clock. Nope! The coffeemaker and microwave each have clocks, of course. One of my apartments in Denver had a timer and clock built into the oven, and I always forgot that one. Most systems now run their clocks on UTC. All timestamps and internal timekeeping are done on Zulu. The only time the local time rules come into play is when displaying that time on the user interface (ie, Windows file explorer displays the modification date and time). However, there are exceptions. The old FAT filesystem, including FAT32 stored timestamps in local time, not UTC. I was interested in that behavior during the period of ambiguous time during the change. There are two 1 - 2AM periods, a 1:30AM EDT and a 1:30AM EST. Without some special provision, there is no way to resolve that when storing only local time.... ...Now, just as a test, I created and saved some files on a FAT32 drive here before, during, and after the ambiguous time period. When the time changed, there were bugs, but in an unexpected way. Files saved before the 1AM window displayed 1 hour *later* after the change. That blew my mind. Then some reading and I discovered the source of that bug. It's in the FAT filesystem driver of Windows. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at November 03, 2024 05:19 AM (w6EFb) 13

That has been done in the early '70s during Nixon. They tried year-round DST in 1974. A majority were all for it. Until the winter solstice in the western-most regions of some time zones where sunrise didn't occur until after 9AM. That killed it, and the reverted. The Michigan upper peninsula is the most western edge of Eastern time, and Indiana's middle sliver is close to it as well. Michigan should be on central time, and Indiana too. The original idea was time zones should be centered on the given meridian and 15 degrees wide, for no more than 30 minutes off either side from local mean solar time. My clocks from the Marathon Watch Company all reset themselves automatically overnight thanks to the digital radio signal broadcast by WWV and WWVB in Fort Collins Colarado. DST change information is built right into the data stream.
Computers, routers, access points, and digital devices that connect to them; all good, as they're set to connect to NIST's NTP (network time protocol) servers, listed here: https://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi Things I have to adjust manually: My watch, the microwave clock, the clock in the vehicle, and the old digital thermostat that connects to nothing. This is also when I change batteries in the battery powered devices (especially the smoke/CO detectors.) Old batteries with some power left in them get relegated to use up their remaining energy in my wireless mouse. I still despise the whole DST thing and wish we'd just stick to Standard Time because standards are supposed to mean something. Also, the cheapest Mac model with the M4 Max CPU costs as much as a maxed-out PC with a 9950X and an RTX 4090. - Pixy
Linus of LinusTechTips was raving about the new M4 Mac Minis on his weekly podcast Friday night. He loves that they boosted the base RAM config to 16GB and the price is only $599. The problems: only a 256GB SSD, and add $200 just to upgrade to 500GB! To fully kit out the M4 Mac Mini with 32GB RAM & 2TB SSD is a whopping $1799. And remember, Mac Minis don’t come with a display or peripherals so you have to supply those yourself. Linus had his podcast co-host, Luke, price out what he could get to similar performance for PC - 7800X3D on a B650-Pro mobo with 32GB RAM, 4TB SSD and a RTX 4070 GPU for the same $1800. Apple is still making around 400% (!!!) profit to upgrade RAM and storage. Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 03, 2024 07:55 AM (6ydKt) 107

Not knowing much about Harris' actual trial background, I read the NY Post article this morning with interest, examining how many actual trials she conducted while a prosecutor in San Francisco. Between there and Alameda County the Post estimates she prosecuted in around 15 trials, though she would have had lots of cases the plead out before trial and she would also have been "involved" in other prosecutions as a supervisor etc.
She looks like a politician with a prosecutorial background, more than an actual prosecutor. https://tinyurl.com/2msczuty Posted by: Huck Follywood at November 03, 2024 08:41 AM (7qV16) 136

Now, why do you suppose a pollster would "change their methodology" during a heated election? If this is what, in fact, happened.
-- It goes back to my point that you can't have an unbiased poll if the pollster reads the news. There's just no way to eliminate the bias of the news that will creep in and taint your weighting. But, then the bias of the news also affects the voters so you have to be aware of that to understand the voters. It's not supposed to add up. It's supposed to give the impression of a surging Harris campaign just like the NYT/Sienna poll. Not a coincidence that both of them drop days before the election and are inconsistent with virtually every other poll. Atlas Intel was the most accurate pollster in 2020. They also dropped a series of polls last night. They have Trump winning every single swing state and the national popular vote. Emerson has Trump winning Iowa by around 10 points. Trump won Iowa easily in 2020 and the state has gotten redder and Harris is, well an idiot and she hasn't even campaigned there this year. Can you think of any logical reason why she would suddenly be surging in Iowa? Posted by: JackStraw at November 03, 2024 09:15 AM (LkLld) 217

Too many are betting on Trump to win. Not good for the gambling parlors.
--- There are reports that there were two 50k bets placed on Harris. And last week, there was someone who placed over $2 million in bets on Harris. One thing to know about crypto is, the market makers manipulate the market to keep liquidity. They have their algos that will place a constant stream of small purchases to move the market in a direction. Then when it starts moving by itself, they dump. They don't often drive huge shifts, but they have. And they're always trying to balance. So yeah, way too much betting on Trump will force a shakeout of positions to restore liquidity and balance. You can certainly chuckle at the Peanut the Squirrel story. But think about the details. The state, along with their DEC and a friendly judge conspired to violate the Fourth Amendment rights of a citizen. They rolled in heavy with guns for an alleged violation of a conservation statute, searched the citizens property, going through the entire contents of his house due to an overly broad warrant, they held him and his wife against their will, then threatened his wife with immigration violations and possible deportation. Ultimately when they found nothing in the search they killed his pets.
Now you tell me, is anyone safe in a state the violates the Fourth Amendment rights of its citizens by using friendly judges and state goon squads as a pretext to search someone’s home and possessions? The answer is no, and the fact there is a single person left in NY should amaze everyone. By the way, the Clown Governor of NY just said if you vote for Trump you hate women. So there’s that too. It seems that the polling is off. But is it? In 2016 no one knew anything about the "Trump voter", the polls were off and Trump overperformed. In 2020 they most likely adjusted, and showed Biden leading. A few days before election Rasmussen showed Biden ahead by 1, and by some measures, Biden by 3. 2024...well polls are saying something very distinct. People keep going back to 2020, because in 2020 they expected that the polls be off like they were in 2016, but in reality they had time to adjust and showed Biden over Trump by margin of error. WHich is what happened. a little over 81k across 4 key state. And now they are telling you a differenet story. And not just one poll.

Yeah, she is no doubt doing what Liz Cheney and so many other DC creatures have done: return to the state in which they were raised just long enough to be elected, and then back to the existing home in Potomac, Kalorama, whatever. Posted by: Lizzy at November 03, 2024 09:47 AM (scDBq) 269

I am not chuckling. What happened is an outrage. They treated this couple like serious criminals, sending in many armed officers, detaining him outside for 5 hours without counsel, tearing apart his home (looking for what?), taking the rescued squirrel and raccoon -- and then euthanizing them. People see this, after the way these same Democrat bureaucrats have allowed criminals to run free, and illegal aliens invade, etc. and understand where we are as a country. Hits just as hard as the Springfield, Ohio revelations. Posted by: Lizzy at November 03, 2024 09:54 AM (scDBq) 281
