3 Made it in one!

Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers on this Halloween! Ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties -- and garbage haulers -- that we are, it's Hallowe'en, as it used to be spelled.

A promo for Svengoolie was just on featuring the show's drop-in character Nostalgiaferatoo. For some reason I always laugh when I see him.

7 I love my venerable MacBook Air, which dates to 2014 and is still handling everything I throw at it (which ain't much compared to gaming and the like). But $1300 for a new *laptop*??? It's like paying today's prices for a new Benz when you could get nearly the same everyday experience and performance from a well-equipped Camry. (I did say nearly, and I did say everyday. If you *need* higher performance, then that's different.)

18 Anyway, here I am, up early after a poor night's sleep -- though I feel strangely rested. Some Cafe Bustelo coffee and a short pipe, and I'm (mostly) ready to face the day.

So I see Trump seized on the "garbage" remark from MushBrain and is making it his own. God, but I admire that man. He may not be perfect, but we're not hiring him to be our friend. (Though I think he'd be fun to have a cup of coffee and a McDonald's Happy Meal with.) We're hiring him to fix the country -- and he's doing his best to get us there, by getting himself in a position to do just that.

I wish it would get dark at 5 p.m. tonight. Well, I wish it most of the time during the will-sappingly long summer, but especially tonight. It may rain this p.m., so it least it may be appropriately gloomy when I get home.

25 My MacBook Pros are getting long in the teeth. I was wanting to upgrade to the M3 MBPs, but they looked like crap. And Apple’s really pissing me off lately. Every macOS and iOS update is worse than the last.

Not much of a Windows user. I used to have a second Windows workstation (primary being macOS) for when I needed Visual Studio to develop Windows Server stuff. And Win11 looks particularly bad. Ugh.

My primary desktop OS for school, home and work for 14 years was Linux. I can’t go back to desktop Linux.

If Apple still made x86-based laptops, I’d probably buy one, macOS gripes notwithstanding. I’ve developed server and embedded for arm64, but the thought of leaving the world of x86 behind saddens me.

37 "Rhetorical" was just one of many words I learned as a teen from reading Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe stories. Wolfe is a superman who talks like a superman -- but he is not one to use a long word when a short one is the best. His maxim, "The corner the light doesn't reach is the one the coin has rolled to" is simple clear English. Those who try to write pastiches of the Wolfe/Archie stories often miss that touch.

Great to hear. I have a couple of babies (male) and Scarlet (female) to do. Ran out of money but God seems to help in the form of a few really generous people on AoSHQ. Unfortunately there's also the odd sick cat that needs at least antibiotics and vets won't prescribe without seeing them so we have to prioritize funds. This is when it would be nice to have a $M in the bank and not have to worry.

LBJ and Clinton (I'll give Carter a pass on that attitude, though he may not deserve it) may have thought it in private but they would *never* have said it out loud.

84 On the last thread, I see my worst fears are being confirmed; betting markets are swinging back to Kamala, and the media is establishing the pretext for the "win" by suddenly talking about the polls underestimating the Dems. Cernovich, who is usually on the money, has also confimed that PA is already gone. In 2022, when the media suddenly started slathering about "hidden Roe vote" I knew it was over, and the same thing is happening now. Again, I really want to see Dave in Fla and the other optimists try to explain why this is any different from 2022.

104 Preventing voting fraud:

1. Voting in person.
2. Voting on one day only.
3. Voter verification against voter lists. You bring government issued picture ID, and you show it before you get a ballot.
4. Paper ballots with serial numbers. The serial number gets torn off, crossed off the list of empty ballots, and the tab gets put in the "used IDs" box. The anonymized ballot gets given to the voter.
5. Voter gets given two sharpie markers (two is one, one is none) which they must return with their marked ballot.
6. Voter returns with folded marked ballot, and their sharpie markers. Voter must now dip a finger in the indelible ink to show they've voted (and thus can't vote again.) Now they can drop the ballot in the secure box for ballots.
7. Secure ballot boxes remain guarded by armed men.
8. Observers from each party present at each polling station to observe the process, as well as do the count.
9. Vote count must be agreed upon by observers, then totals must be posted publicly, available to anyone so anyone can add up all the polling station totals themselves. THEN observers can go home, not until.

From a rando crap ad on the TwiX

Introducing Radar - Discover trends before they're trends.

This sounds like an assertion from a senior scientist I once knew, Ken W. He had accumulated so much SciCred that he could run an experiment that yielded a single data point and then automagically produce THE line than ran through said point. ("HOW DOES HE GET AWAY WITH THAT?" we young'uns would howl,) Much like Jack Crabb in "Little Big Man", Ken would then intone, "You go down there ..." and our tech leaders would unleash we newly hired hounds to go baying after that will-o-the-wisp.

Ken was the same guy who drew an analogy between a hole about to go rouge in a spinneret operating under high pressure and the twisted surface of the urine stream that flowed from a man's pecker.

110 If Apple still made x86-based laptops, I’d probably buy one, macOS gripes notwithstanding. I’ve developed server and embedded for arm64, but the thought of leaving the world of x86 behind saddens me.
Posted by: Lurker

Once upon a time I worked for Microsoft and since it's paid for a significant part of my retirement, the odds of me even considering having a Mac or a Linux box in my house is non-starter. With that out of the way I never thought I would abandon x86 computing. However, the latest Qualcomm ARM chips running on Windows are quite intriguing to me, especially in the laptop area. The chips are quite performant, Microsoft finally has reasonable emulation for x86 apps, and the apps that I use are showing up compiled for ARM. It's getting to be a rather seamless transition. Further, I'm at a point where computers are no longer a central part of my life. I use them to manage my life, my photography, and for entertainment reasons. As usual, one's preferences, biases, needs would play a large part when considering running an ARM CPU with Windows but for me they're are looking like the preferred option going forward.

Here in Southern Illinois you have to be registered to vote beforehand and you receive a voting card with your name, etc.
You present that when voting and your name is found in a ledger and signed off. You have to sign too. Then you are issued a ballot, find a booth and do your stuff. Then you feed your ballot into a scanner. Done.
I don't know if you can vote without that card or vote at a different location other than your assigned one. Seems pretty good. The scanner and any manual shenanigans that could come later is another story.

Part of the prep should include purchasing large rolls of Supersoft Charmin.

I was in the hospital once for something different. They heard my story about a colonscopy prep with no colonoscopy before so they decided to do one while I was in the hospital. I gsave some hospital staffer cash to go to the deli/store across the street from the hospital and buy me a 4-roll pack of Charmin. I knew hospital toilet paper was not going to cut it -- at all.

Back when I was nearly out of my teens I had to have an inguinal hernia repaired. Those were pre-laproscopic surgery days, so cuts to the abdomen were involved, with an uncomfortable healing process to follow.

Two of my college roommates came to visit me in the hospital afterward. They spent most of their visit time telling jokes to me. As it hurt a lot to laugh, this was agony. I must have said, "I love you guys, but you are being such cruel assholes right now", a couple dozen times before they left my room.

178 169 My doctor scheduled a colon exam, and didn't explain it to me. It was the alternate to a colonoscopy, used if you are on blood thinners. You still go through the prep and then you're awake all the time while they pump air and white stuff into your innards. When I got off the table I noted the tech had two mop buckets strategically placed on the way to the rest room.

Exactly.
How about these reporters diagram Biden's sentence to show their work?

(I'm guessing none of them are capable of that task nowadays)

Isn't it funny that when a person makes an allegedly racist/sexist/bigoted "dog whistle" insult -- something that is interpreted as offensive when no insult/offense was intended -- we're lectured that it's the interpretation/hurt feelings that matter, not the speaker's intent? They demand the offender apologize profusely, maybe even agree to re-education or resign.

But Biden makes a "gaffe" and it's Trump's and our fault for taking it at face value. It's Trump's fault for not giving Biden the benefit of the doubt immediately.

224 George Clooney is lending his voice to a new ad aimed at Christian men, urging them to vote for Vice President Harris.

The ad, released Wednesday by the progressive evangelical organization Vote Common Good, follows a group of men as they head into the voting booth, seemingly prepared to cast ballots for former President Trump.

“Come on boys, let’s make America great again,” one of the men tells the group.

“Before you cast your vote in this election, think about how it will impact the people you care about the most,” Clooney says in a voiceover.

One of the men then eyes his daughter and opts to vote for Harris, as Clooney tells viewers, “Remember, you can vote any way you want. And no one will ever know.”

“What happens in the booth, stays in the booth,” the “Ocean’s Eleven” star says in the ad.

271 I hate the media… intentionally went looking for stories about Trump’s garbage truck trolling this morning and all I could find were headlines like “viral video shows Trump struggling to get in garbage truck”… the one exception I could find was Fox News but they can EABOD anyway

281 Absolutely not. Red is the Security Branch, who have a lot of trouble getting new recruits. Not one of them wants to transfer to Kirk's ship.

Hey, *everybody* on the Constellation and Capt. Tracey's ship died, not just the redshirts! No telling about the other nine. Enterprise might have been the safest of the bunch!

284 "...President Biden, where he in his explanation, inadvertently called Trump supporters garbage.”

Another person who doesn't know what the word "inadvertently" means - that, or he is claiming he understands the mind of Biden and knows the thoughts of his heart.

We have a fairly high confidence level in the default belief that Joe Biden hates at least half America - otherwise why try to replace the population and kill the rest with mRNA Kill Shots and crippling taxes and regulation?
