Jeff Bezos: People Think the Press is Biased. That's Why I'm Not Ordering the Post to Shed Its Bias, But Merely to Hide Its Bias By No Longer Publishing Political Endorements.

Bezos published an op-ed defending his choice to stop the practice of endorsing candidates.

He acknowledged that the public simply doesn't believe journalists any longer, and journalists have to acknowledge that reality. Reality, he says, always wins every argument he's in.

But, he does not state the paper needs to reform itself, or hire editors to patrol for bias. And certainly he doesn't suggest the Post stop running propaganda ops for the Deep State. And most of all, he definitely does not suggest that the Post must apologize for its history of relentless and remorseless lying, about Russiagate (the lies about which got it a Pulitizer, which they continue bragging about, for some reason, about covid, about Hunter Biden's laptop, about Joe Biden's putative cognitive health.

No -- he just says let's stop endorsing candidates, and then the public will believe us again.

Because it's the endorsements, not the corporate culture of relentless lying and propaganda, that the public objects to.

In the annual public surveys about trust and reputation, journalists and the media have regularly fallen near the very bottom, often just above Congress. But in this year's Gallup poll, we have managed to fall below Congress. Our profession is now the least trusted of all. Something we are doing is clearly not working.

Let me give an analogy. Voting machines must meet two requirements. They must count the vote accurately, and people must believe they count the vote accurately. The second requirement is distinct from and just as important as the first.

Likewise with newspapers. We must be accurate, and we must be believed to be accurate. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but we are failing on the second requirement. Most people believe the media is biased. Anyone who doesn't see this is paying scant attention to reality, and those who fight reality lose. Reality is an undefeated champion. It would be easy to blame others for our long and continuing fall in credibility (and, therefore, decline in impact), but a victim mentality will not help. Complaining is not a strategy. We must work harder to control what we can control to increase our credibility.

Presidential endorsements do nothing to tip the scales of an election. No undecided voters in Pennsylvania are going to say, "I'm going with Newspaper A's endorsement." None. What presidential endorsements actually do is create a perception of bias. A perception of non-independence.

I can only say this so many times but what creates the perception of bias is, in fact, the bias.

Ending them is a principled decision, and it's the right one.

...

Lack of credibility isn't unique to The Post. Our brethren newspapers have the same issue. And it's a problem not only for media, but also for the nation. Many people are turning to off-the-cuff podcasts, inaccurate social media posts and other unverified news sources, which can quickly spread misinformation and deepen divisions. The Washington Post and the New York Times win prizes, but increasingly we talk only to a certain elite. More and more, we talk to ourselves. (It wasn't always this way -- in the 1990s we achieved 80 percent household penetration in the D.C. metro area.)

While I do not and will not push my personal interest, I will also not allow this paper to stay on autopilot and fade into irrelevance -- overtaken by unresearched podcasts and social media barbs -- not without a fight. It's too important. The stakes are too high. Now more than ever the world needs a credible, trusted, independent voice, and where better for that voice to originate than the capital city of the most important country in the world? To win this fight, we will have to exercise new muscles. Some changes will be a return to the past, and some will be new inventions. Criticism will be part and parcel of anything new, of course. This is the way of the world. None of this will be easy, but it will be worth it. I am so grateful to be part of this endeavor. Many of the finest journalists you'll find anywhere work at The Washington Post, and they work painstakingly every day to get to the truth. They deserve to be believed.

Oh, f*** yourself.

The amateur webzine Slate used to reveal its editors' and writers' votes every four years. Their belief-- that informing the public of our biases and our preferences helps the reader judge our reportage, while hiding those biases and preferences makes it harder for the reader to judge our reportage.

They were right. Bezos is wrong.

He's spraying down a fetid whorehouse with Industrial Strength Febreeze and calling it good.

Meanwhile, the NYT says "The public doesn't trust us because they know we're vicious partisans? HOLD MY BEER."

They have sent DMs to Ben Shapiro and Tucker Carlson informing them that they are running a story on leftwing propaganda organization Media Matters' claims about them spreading "election misinformation." They're now accepting Media Matters as a legitimate disinterested analyst.

Tucker's reply:

So the New York Times is working with a left wing hate group to silence critics of the Democratic Party? Please ask yourself why you're participating in it. This is why you got into journalism? It's shameful. I hope you're filled with guilt and self-loathing for sending me a text like this. Please quote me. ...

Would I like to participate in your attempt to censor me? No thanks. But I do hope you'll quote what I wrote above and also note that I told you to f*** off, which I am now doing. Thanks.

I don't think tucker used asterisks. I think he said "fudge."

Unrelated, but related:

I spend time every day reflecting on my life and the state of the world. I can accept the in your face deviancy, the rampant crime, and the crushing burden of inflation slowly eating away at the savings of a lifetime. I can relax in the face of declining standards of living, shortened lifespans, increasing hostility, and the increasing possibility of world war.

But when I think of the burden faced by our brave journalists struggling with their loss of credibility... it breaks a man.

Saying, "a journalist or newspaper endorsed the Party Man" is like saying, "bikini model endorses bright, sunny days."

86 Waaaaaaay back at my first job out of college I worked for an established corporation.
During their new employee training they instructed that we always be sure to behave with utmost professionalism, and to be aware of appearances. Specifically: Perception = Reality. If a customer perceived something bad about how we conducted business, it was as bad as if it were true. Perception is just as important as actual behavior.

Wash Post has a HUGE problem with perceived bias and malice against one party and its voters. Not endorsing Kamala barely scratches the surface of this problem, it is superficial.

Of course, I'm pretty sure if I were given, say, 30 days, I could come up with enough credible evidence of election fraud to justify a full scale investigation and multiple indictments.

But, go on with your assertions, FBI and DHS.

It signals non support for Kamala when she really needs a boost — to her party and her supporters. Doesn’t make a difference to anyone who hasn’t already decided to vote for her.

157 Bezos is most likely simply trying to preserve his business toy. WaPo does NOT need to make money. It doesn't even need to break even. It's a tool in the Bezos portfolio. It can lose all sorts of money.

Its value is as a legally-protected "First Amendment" Operation that allows him to research everyone and everything more openly under the guise of free speech. His proxies/employees get privileged access to people, places, things, and events that no citizen can. And he has a whole library of legal protection to utilize this tool to investigate anything, private or public.

It's essential to his larger operation to protect and defend WaPo for its unique tools he can exploit for much larger interests.

Not really true anymore. Most of the techlords nowadays could not make a living from coding and are about as smart on tech as your average CEO.

We detected the steal pretty quickly and how it was carried out pretty early in 2020 but the courts throughout the nation including Scotus exhibited extreme cowardice and compliance in the face of massive illegality of the Dems.

Cheating, like terrorism, bad schooling, etc. are all fixable by willpower and a willingness to fight for them. It was more the stab in the back by the GOPe that wanted Trump gone so Mitch and crew could carry on looting is why we lost in 2024.

The elites of the GOP were against Trump whether from fear, being on Biden side in the first place, or from greed. "Nous sommes trahis!"

Have you noticed the shift? Can you see how the messaging from the left is now more focussed on what happens after the election than the election itself?
That tells me:
1) They know they cannot win on votes. It’s over.
2) They know it is “too big to rig”. The cheat will fail.
3) They have shifted their main line of effort to preventing Trump from ever taking office.

Watch what they have planned. I suspect from their rhetoric that they are willing to burn this country to the ground before they will face accountability & let the will of the people prevail.

That is my professional analysis based on more than 35 years as a journalist watching the information landscape every day of my life.

A few things to add. While AG, Loretta Lynch ran FBI head Comey. Their Fix for Hillary's server exposure was to focus on narrow charges that purposefully ignored what really happened. The charges never got into how all that confidential information got on the server in the first place. e.g., Huma going into the SCIF to take screen captures with her phone.

Hillary used all this information to run her own shadow international operation, including to solicit hundreds of millions in bribes that were run through the Clinton Foundation.

The deal was that Hillary would make Loretta the first black woman SCOTUS and Comey would be her AG. It fell apart when Lynch was caught on the tarmac with Bill. Lynch then had to delegate to Comey who refused a total whitewash because it would kill Comey's future advancement.

Comey has a seedy past if you only connect the dots. One dot is his making his bones by putting Martha Stewart in jail on bogus charges. I especially hate his sanctimony for pretending to be religious.

Bezos is the Jerry Jones of Elon Musks.

Smart enough to hire the right people initially, buuuuut-

then his personal issues and subsequent poor decisions fuck everything up.

He had exactly the right idea with his space program. He went about it exactly the wrong way.

He bought the WaPo and ran it like a teenage nerd wanting approval from the cool kids, instead of as a money-making influential business.

Sad.

Bezos needs to get on his sailboat and enjoy his money. He's done as an influence from here on out.

Yeah, that dawned on me last night as I recounted the bat-**** crazy Hitlerian Hysteria that exploded over the weekend.

So, "they have shifted their main line of effort to preventing Trump from ever taking office" does seem like the most natural evolution of Deep State function. It's not like they're hiding it either.

The theory goes like this.

1) I read Kurt Schlichter's The Attack, and thought "If I were Iran, this is what I'd do, this year."

2) There was a terrorist dude that Biden-Harris let across the border, a serious guy that, when asked why he was coming over, said "you'll see."

3) There was another terrorist dude, an Afghan let in by Bush, who was busted for planning an attack on Election Day. My thought: he's probably an idiot. Did he really go for delayed gratifcation and long planning, or is this like The Attack?

4) Today the intelligence community issued a vague warning for Election Day.

The weird part: Mrs Splunge had a lunch with some local women. When she mentioned to them that I was insisting she stay home that day, they agreed that was the wise course of action.

WTF? The one time I do something off-the-wall, two people endorse it, instead of calling me a weirdo??

Twas not the hypothesis in question. You said, that they were superior regarding technology. I said they were not.

I explained why in most cases that the tech that the GOP had which included results of a truly massive investigation in swing states were ignored. It is because the courts and GOPe in the highest offices in the land were moral cowards or complicit in the steal--from top to bottom.

The legal rule in stopping a steal is whether or not the size of the alleged cheat exceeds the margin of victory. MAGA proved that again and again with facts, figures, science, and evidence and the deafening silence even from GOP officeholders in places like Wisconsin, GA, AZ, etc and the halls of Congress by and large to ignore that.

That is what a fight looks like regarding willpower but you have to have your leaders up front. The GOP leaders and jurists had to close ranks like they did for the shitty person GWB in 2000. They did not and the country is worse for it.

It was not the MAGA people, it was explictly the GOPe like Pence that shrank from the task in fighting the steal.

300 Lots of Libs are buying guns now. Range time, not so much.
Posted by: NaCly Dog

Handguns are defensive weapons. Rifles and shotguns to some degree are offensive. Most of the new firearms being sold are handguns which actually take more training to shoot well than rifles or shotguns. And so it goes.

Too many people think like the lawyer couple in St Louis when BLM came calling. They think of firearms as a magic talisman to show seriousness of purpose.

I'm listening to Spiegel im Spiegel for violin and piano by Arvo Pärt. "The piece is in F major in 6/4 time, with the piano playing rising crotchet triads and the violin playing slow F major scales, alternately rising and falling, of increasing length, which all end on the note A (the mediant of F). The piano's left hand also plays notes, synchronized with the violin." That is how I want to be spending my time.

Have you noticed the shift? Can you see how the messaging from the left is now more focussed on what happens after the election than the election itself?
That tells me:
1) They know they cannot win on votes. It's over.
2) They know it is "too big to rig".

My observation is that it's easy to get narcissists to believe anything. You can convince them of two conflicting things at the same time if both of them imply positive attributes about the members of the group.

It just hit me, this is how doublethink is grown: it is a virtue to think either thing. And narcissists love to hear positive traits attributed to themselves.

To some degree, Trump showing up in some blue places are as much for House races as they are to seriously challenge Harris there. NY has quite a few competitive house races that will turn on a relatively few votes.

here is an actual like, took me a while to find on line:

"One facet of Ms. Harris’s dignity is her recognition of the right of others to be treated with respect."

from "deadline dot com"

At the outset of the event, held before a group of undecided voters in Pennsylvania, Harris was asked by moderator Anderson Cooper if she herself believed Trump is a fascist. The vice president said without hesitation: “Yes, I do.”

I am far more worried about native born terror groups like antifa and blm than illegals.

Not including possible sleeper cells of jihadis, mind you, but your average Hispanic illegal is just going to go back home. It's what happened when Trump was President before.

The violent foreign gangs are emboldened by toothless and/or unenforced laws and complicit Soros DAs. That's a local problem that may or may not be fixable, depending on how much people are paying attention or acrually understand how the legal system works, but I doubt they're paying attention to the Presidential election.

All the madness that will be unleashed is going to be homegrown. Again, jihadis aside.

325 I fully expected this to happen. I thought the meeting between Biden and the UK Ambassador over using the Storm Missiles in Ukraine (ultimately Russia) would be the catalyst. My prediction was an approval on the missiles, and escalation in fighting and uncertainty, Biden assumes room temperature, Harris steps in, EU and Ukraine follow the script at take a step back at Harris's direction. Bingo, instant good press and foreign policy aficionado status.
Posted by: Orson at October 29, 2024 06:00 PM (dIske)

Zelensky can't 'take a step back' because he will get couped out by the Azov Nazi units in the army if he does. And not the 'visit a resort island' kind of coup but the shot in the head kind.
