Description
The painting shows a woman reclining on her back, with a pet parrot alighting on an outstretched hand. While painted in a style to gain Academy acceptance in its pose and smooth flesh tones, the model's discarded clothes and disheveled hair were controversial,[2] although less so than Le Sommeil, painted the same year. Joanna Hiffernan likely posed for both paintings, as she did for others by Courbet. ----- I think CBD gave us Le Sommeil [The Snooze!] once too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Sommeil Posted by: andycanuck (hovnC) at October 31, 2024 09:55 AM (hovnC) 125

Courbet certainly can portray naked, sensual women and seemed to enjoy doing so. He knows how to capture the feel of them in languid poses. Maybe it's me, but I often sense a bit of underlying humor in some of his paintings. In today's selection I get the humor aspect of the parrot as if that is the focus instead of the woman.
No idea how they were received by the critics of his time but he did some wonderful still life paintings as well. Posted by: JTB at October 31, 2024 09:58 AM (yTvNw) 146

Proving that I am single minded, I will ignore the picture of the naked lady...
Florida early vote update, and the trend lines are continuing to be clear. Florida is not unique, so behavior in this state will be similar to behavior in other states. 1) Republicans added another 59K votes to their lead yesterday 2) Democrats had a 115K lead in 2020, in 2024 Republicans have a 727K lead 3) This is a shift of 842,687 votes between the two elections (Trump won the state by about 400K votes) 4) Republicans have almost reached their IPEV total from 2020, and are now at 97% 5) Democrats are at 49% of their 2020 mail-in vote levels, while Republicans are at 60% While I expect a small closing of the gap this weekend, it will be trivial. Democrats traditionally get the bulk of their votes in during the first week and Republicans close the gap in the second. Simple fact is Democrats are not voting this year. My spidey sense is telling me that this is how Democrats are going to vote for Trump without having to vote for Trump. They are staying home. There are very few Democrat GOTV operations any more, since they shifted to using early voting. Getting them to the polls on election day is a very heavy lift, since they weren't willing to vote using the easiest available method. Many of them don't even know where their polling location is. NEW: Mysterious super PAC tied to Democrats is meddling in Senate and House races by boosting libertarian candidates, hoping to take away support from Republican candidates. "The Save Western Culture PAC, which appears to be targeting the Maryland and Texas Senate races and at least a dozen equally close House contests, registered with the Federal Election Commission on Oct. 11. Its late-stage FEC registration means that there is no public information available about its donors — and there very likely won’t be before the Nov. 5 election, further raising suspicions, including over whether it could be trying to siphon votes from GOP candidates. Details about its spending are also limited." === NY Post source. Posted by: andycanuck (hovnC) at October 31, 2024 10:30 AM (hovnC) 262

She really can't even do an interview, and her campaign is a festival of emptiness and contradictions. Sometimes I wonder if the Patriots somehow conspired to get her to be the candidate. ======= This is a false reading of the 2020 primary. Biden entered the race and ended up second in polling consistently for months and months. Second to Bernie. He never crashed and burned. He was steady as a rock. Who crashed and burned were all the establishment progressive hopes like Kamala, Warren, Beto, and Buttigieg (who won Iowa, remember). Biden just kind of stayed around. In terms of actual primary performance, he did poorly in IA and NH, but IA and NH are jokes in terms of actually delivering a candidate, especially if they disagree (IA should be shoved to the back of the schedule, to be honest). Suddenly, SC comes up, and Biden, who'd been polling consistently at the top in the state. It wasn't a last second change that he won SC. He'd been coasting to victory in SC since Feb of 2019 (look up the polls, it's true, Clyburn did shit). The establishment wanted someone else. Bernie was top of the stack. Less Republicans are voting early this year than 2020. In Florida Republicans are down 40% off the mail-in vote from 2020.
What has changed is that Democrat votes have fallen off a cliff. You are seeing big leads everywhere, but not because of Republicans over performing. It is because Democrats aren't showing up. Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 31, 2024 10:32 AM (Gjv0b) I'm confused. I thought R's were voting earlier this year. Could it be that they're doing early voting, instead of mail-in? Question for Dave in Fla,
Do you have a sense of whether the pro-abortion Amendment 4 will get 60%? I saw a recent poll that had support only at 54%, but with enough undecideds that it conceivably get to 60%. It said that among those who had already voted (a more Democratic group than the overall electorate, since this was taken last week when the FL vote was less R than now) it was at 58%. It seems likely to me that number would have dropped since, and perhaps continue to drop as more Rs vote early and on election day. Of course, maybe 25-30% of Rs are voting yes, and I would expect the yes side to get a majority, but maybe not 60%. Posted by: mikeybates at October 31, 2024 10:42 AM (ZunDp) 312

The blaze, which broke out at the 225,000-square-foot facility owned by Critical Mineral Recovery, led to shelter-in-place advisories and mandatory evacuation orders in the surrounding area. According to its website, the company uses this facility to “recycle lithium-ion battery materials from battery manufacturers, automotive OEMs, battery dealers, recyclers, and processors worldwide,” describing it as “one of the largest lithium-ion battery processing facilities in the world.” All plant workers have been safely accounted for, with only minor injuries reported https://is.gd/k5oR2L 1:09 minutes; infrequent but loud commentary. 363 The single most important thing the GOP can do is put pressure on the states to routinely audit their voter registration rolls a and then purge invalid election egistrations. When Florida did so, it went from a swing state to a reliable red one overnight.

My spidey sense is telling me that this is how Democrats are going to vote for Trump without having to vote for Trump. They are staying home.
Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 31, 2024 10:06 AM (TbTZs) Hope this means the stay homes won't be supplemented by "found" absentee votes without USPS date stamps. Posted by: InoGarbage at October 31, 2024 11:01 AM (53oGX) Posted by: muldoon at October 31, 2024 11:01 AM (uCfKO) 379
So the Clyburn thing was just a BS media narrative. Interesting.
Posted by: MrExcitement at October 31, 2024 10:59 AM (hOOi9) Not dissimilar to "Howard Dean lost the D primaries for yelling at a rally". He was polling way behind and was never considered likely to win any of the important super tuesday states. There was hope he might win NH (he's from VT). That speech he gave in Iowa was after he lost the caucus. And then he went on to lose NH. Lots of narratives and "accepted wisdom" around elections are complete bullshit. Biden has been around since the earth cooled.
Extorsion is an ugly word. He was never the only one connected in the family but either no one thought to look elsewhere or they were told to move on. Posted by: L - If they'll do it with you, they'll do it to you, too at October 31, 2024 11:03 AM (NFX2v) 381

323 You are seeing big leads everywhere, but not because of Republicans over performing. It is because Democrats aren't showing up.
Posted by: Dave in Fla ======= Independents in EV? In a lot of party registration states, these are about one third or so of the electorate. Saw in NC that independents early voting topped that of Dems statewide. Posted by: whig at October 31, 2024 11:04 AM (ctrM5) 383

This is illegal, and @JoshShapiroPA should do something about operatives in his own party depriving people of their right to vote. If he doesn't, he is complicit in voter fraud. Posted by: andycanuck ====== Technically Shapiro can be criminally charged for voter suppression (federal law) along with those activists if Shapiro collaborated with allowing them access to polling places as fraudulent polling workers.
