Gun Thread: Last October Edition!

pumpkin pic scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the end of October? In just a few days, it will be Halloween and the Great Pumpkin will visit the range. Will you be prepared? Have you been practicing your Fundamentals?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
Are you so dedicated to your focus on fundamentals that you forget to have fun at the range? Remember, you can't have fundamentals withoutut having FUN! Practicing solid fundamentals and having fun are not mutually exclusive, so enjoy yourself at the range.

Six Pounds of Fury and Terror!
It's been almost exactly one year since we said goodbye to WeaselDog, and Fun Size Joe needed a sister, so please welcome our new little furry pal Unnamed Little Furry Pal! She's about three years old and weighs in at a solid six pounds. We brought her home yesterday from the local animal shelter and she makes FSJ look positively big by comparison. He is being a such good boy and sharing all of his stuff and our new little girl is settling right in!

Cigar of the Week

Packaging w Stickers scaled.jpg

This week our pal JSpicy , The Moron Formerly Known as Ooohm (TMFKAO) shares his favorite online cigar shop Fox Cigar.

Q: Weasel, should we continue calling Ooohm "Ooohm?"
A: No. Please refer to Ooohm as "JSpicy"

Anyhow...

When I'm not shaking my fist at imaginary kids on my lawn or wishing I had a lawn, my mind often wanders to the depressing state of online customer service. Today's know-nothing CEO's appear more interested in sucking out our personal data than delivering us beef jerky and booze. It's a damn shame.

What does that have to do with Cigars you ask? As it happens, plenty. First of all, I'm usually smoking a cigar when I'm shaking my fist at imaginary kids. Secondly, I was a life-long BigCigar customer but got fed up with their fees, email spam, weird clubs and poor customer service.

Then I happened upon a company that stocks the cigars I want, at competitive prices and great customer service. You think they'd be called Unicorn Cigars. Well you're wrong. They're called Fox Cigar company.

Did I mention free shipping? For cigars. Yeah. Delivery is quick, packaging is great with humidification packs in every order. Stickers too! The hand written notes make my day.

As for selection, I'm fancy so I buy my cigars in bundles and they carry my two favorites - Factory Smokes and Havana Q.

If you're looking for good smokes, good prices, free shipping and an excellent customer experience give foxcigar.com a try.

Now get the heck off my lawn!

Excellent, JSpicy! Thanks for the recommendation! I've added the link below.

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World
Fox Cigar New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

22 Thanks again for the competent and well-organized range activity at the MoMe.

Now I just have to figure out why I didn't shoot as well there as I do at my home ranges.

Speaking of which, it looks as though the Arizona summer will be over on Tuesday, which means I get to go back to my beloved outdoor range. Very excited. Next skill on my agenda is drawing and firing from a holster, and I prefer to get started with that with no witnesses to my incompetence.

23 Hi horde!

Made it to the range today - practicing fundamentals! Picked up a S&W 22lr Victory to better practice my terrible trigger control and save a little on more expensive ammo. I didn't clean it or anything before I went. It was finicky from the start - on the 10th round the rear of the casing blew off and the rest of the casing stayed in the barrel. I didn't have any tools with me so I packed it up. I have heard 22lr pistols can be a little choosy on ammo especially subsonic. Has anyone had that happen to them? I felt the back blast on my face. I wasn't sure where to send pictures so I sent them to Ace to pass on to Weasel. To make matters worse I was shooting my 9mm Shield and a spent casing bounced off the wall and stuck between my safety glasses and cheek. I don't think the shooting Gods were in my favor today!

33 This is a week late, as the TxMoMe was a week ago, but Weasel asked for reports. He gets one.

I am an absolute novice with firearms. I never shot a pistol until TxMoMe '22, and now I look forward to the opportunity each year.

The experienced shooters offer their guns and guidance. I worked with a 9mm for all three of my sessions. I learned a better way to place my thumbs when gripping the pistol and how to use a magazine loader. My arm quivers when extended, and I learned how to crouch slightly in an attempt to ease that.

And in regard to safety? My lands! The gun remains unloaded and in a case until arrival at the range table. Only then do I insert the magazine.

Out of two dozen shots total, I think I hit the target six times. Once I hit the target above the one I wanted.

I enjoyed myself thoroughly. If I had any regret, it was that I did not return to the range more often.

I look forward to TxMoMe X.

42 Colonial Williamsburg gunsmithing: It was still around in 1989 when I visited there. I had a discussion with the gunsmith about why double barreled pistols and muskets weren't very common (more expensive than making two single barrel weapons, weight problems). The gunsmith said that double barrel weapons you saw in the movies were almost entirely a figment of Hollywood. Double barrel shotguns didn't really enter the stage until the 19th century according to him.

43 Way back when, Kirsten Joy did some stuff for TTAG. In an article, she casually mentioned the 30.06 was "ballistically inefficient."

Holy cow, I never saw so many people get so offended so quickly for someone stating the obvious.

Anyway, way back when, with her .22, she did a trick shot at an egg, off hand, at quite a distance, I don't remember how far, just that it was quite the shot.

Seems like a very nice young lady. She also did some shooting videos with Adam Baldwin.

Thanks again, Weasel!

47 So, I finished loading my first-ever 50 rounds yesterday. I performed one step a day for a week, starting with sorting and tumbling the brass. I can see that this will eventually be a relaxing and fun pastime but loading those first 50 was a nerve-wracking experience. I measured, calibrated, eyeballed, checked and rechecked every step. I know I did everything right, but there's always that nagging feeling that I missed something. I'll know for sure when I get to the range next week. I feel like Oppenheimer waiting on the first A bomb test.

49 Optics - like a spotting scope. We brought one to Texas and it is a MUST for shooting distances.

Pluses: it came with an adapter to hold a phone on the eyepiece - this was very useful as it kept you from having to lean over into the eyepiece. And we could video our shots way out there. Critical in confirming sra blaster hitting that 500 yd steel.

Minuses - it came with a small tripod - we set it up on the flatbed which gave it a good enough height especially with the camera adapter. But that meant the concussion from the shot shook the scope and made it tough to see the target clearly at first. I order a tall tripod so we can use it from ground level.

Pffft. That's why you have scorers in the pits below the targets.

Plus, it's extra incentive to avoid them waving Maggie's Drawers after a shot.

54 23, Lurking in Garland.
22 lr case blowing is pretty rare with good ammo. A quick and dirty way to clean at the range is a couple of drops of bore solvent on a bores that you pull through the bore and chamber.

A personal observation is that 22 lr semi autos are ammo sensitive to the point of finding one or two makes and sticking with them

62 Whig>>>

You probably saw a P7Pro. They are in Texas. They have put out a few guns, made from old German parts and some new parts but seem to be gearing up for full production of all new clones. I’ ve been keeping an eye on them because they are advertising some new features like optic cuts and titanium frames. With all the new goodies, they aren’t cheaper than original. But a basic clone is cheaper.

I plan on shooting mine. It was advertised on gunbroker as new old stock, but it had some obvious blemishes. I didn’t want a safe queen. Just wish spare mags weren’t so hard to come by. Strangely, ProMag seems to be the only ones producing them now, so it looks like I’m getting some pro mags.

Great news for Weasel, WW, and FSJ!

On the drive back from the MoMe, my wife was asking for background on all of her new Moron friends.

I told her that Weasel lost one of his Chihuahuas last year, but added that I thought he might rescue another one at some point.

She will be tickled to hear that bit of news.

66 The thing that makes me happiest when shooting these days, other than shooting itself, is when I have to move further away from the target because I'm too inclined to forgive the mistakes at my current distance.

Last time, I went out to 20 yards with my favorite pistol, for the first time. It's a great feeling.

67 Sniffy and whig, P7Pro is the name of the outfit that's brought back the P7 platform using HK frames and US made parts. They might be your best shot for additional magazines. The Firearms Blog had an article about them earlier this month.

Sniffy, the HK P7 is a great shooter if you can get used to the squeeze cocker mechanism in the front strap. If your P7M8 is in decent condition, most P7 variants have done pretty well on the collector's market as "investments."

69 I think I have decided on what's going under sra blaster's Christmas tree. Don't want to jinx it because I am currently high bidder on it on gunbroker, but I think a Howa 1500 APC in .308 - 24 inch heavy barrel. The one with the American flag pattern on it.

70 Range report. Failure after success edition. I made it to the range Friday to check zero before the silhouette match on Saturday. Per WeaselWisdom, I noted DA and Temp that morning, plugged the information in to my app to get elevation readings then headed over to shoot the practice targets after checking zero. I got everything dialed in and properly noted in notebook and left feeling like I was on it.

Before the match, I noted the DA and temp before I started shooting, and was pleased to note the readings had hardly changed from the previous day.

Then the match started. I went 10 for 20 on a day I should have easily scored 17 out of 20 or better. I didn't feel too bad, as a couple of our better shooters, who I thought should have gone 20 for 20 struggled to a winning score of 17.

As I was leaving, I was contemplating my failures and realized during the match I was vertically stringing shots. And that tiny little light bulb went off which said, "Dummy, Weasel has mentioned multiple times vertical stringing means rear rest issue." Arggh.

73 I plan on shooting mine. It was advertised on gunbroker as new old stock, but it had some obvious blemishes. I didn’t want a safe queen. Just wish spare mags weren’t so hard to come by. Strangely, ProMag seems to be the only ones producing them now, so it looks like I’m getting some pro mags.

ProMags are hit or miss in quality. Buy one to see if your P7 likes it. Often people have had problems with ProMags, more if they are double stack which the P7 is not.

Useful manual of arms to the one carry gun crowd. but not one that is readily transferable to other handguns.

I would try the S&W forum which are useful for a particular S&W firearm and its particulars like preferred ammo. Nice folks (unless you start dissing S&W lol) and helpful on a lot of little things that can trip up someone.

Use to frequent it years ago but like a lot of things, active posting is not what I do much on firearms sites anymore.

That being said, copper washing aka plated or the newer polymer coated 22 LR can cut down on the muck generated from lead bullets and are useful for longer strings of fire than something like Thunderbird.

Ironically, some people get their best accuracy with that Remington rimfire cartridge.

He could probably get some good coin on it by selling them but run of the mill examples suffer some price loss when you suddenly get new clones competing with the original.

I like the Minimag but occasionally, you will actually see a warning by a 22 LR manufacturer not to use them in their semi auto. Sig had a bad time with its 22 LR Mosquito which was an understudy to their P series centerfire handguns at the time.

Turns out it was that there are actually two different 22 LR chambers--I think one was a Match and the other was Sporting (not unknown in other cartridges among gun makers as well). The Mosquitoes were made in Germany to the Match specification and it turns out that is not to the spec of most bulk 22 LR ammo shot in the US.

Old school, go for a revolver and carbine that fire the same ammo. Something like a Marlin 94 (or Rossi) in 38 Spc and 357 Magnum lever action carbine and a 38 Special/357 lever action carbine.

Coming out of a 18-20 inch rifle barrel, the already strong 357 magnum in a 4-6 inch revolver barrel turns into firebreathing monster hurling a 158 gr slug close to 200 fps with mild recoil.

Learn though to use speed loaders for the revolver.

I have pushed a LOT of wheelchairs. (Best friend after becoming quad, father last few years of his life.) I cannot imagine maneuvering a wheelchair and a long gun at the same time!

If you like revolvers, then I think that would be your best defensive choice.

Do you have any gun buddies? If so, I would have them go down with you to the local indoor range with all of their own revolvers and semi-autos.

Shoot all of the weapons straight from your wheelchair without touching the shooting station at all - if the RSO will allow that.

Figure out what you can shoot well and go with that!

It will be a helluva lot cheaper for 38 Special, 357 Magnum, and also 45 ACP. And much much cheaper for oddball antique ammo like the cowboy 32-20, 44-40, 38-40, or 45 Colt.

I find it marginally beneficial for 9mm, 223/5.56 or 308 in range quality ammo. If you start getting into competitions, then it makes sense to reload those as well.

Have you considered adding pistol caliber carbines (PCC) to your list? PCC are usually more shooter friendly to new shooters, usually have less recoil and muzzle blast than rifles and Magnum chambered revolvers, and (depending on the platform) can accommodate suppressors/silencers if you want to go that route. I like the HK MP5/SP5 platform because these are arguably the softest shooting PCC on the market today and are among the best suppressor hosts. But if you need something more affordable, the Extar EP-9 is very capable to do the job and comes in at around $450, less than half the price of the cheapest HK clone.

Question for the Morons and 'ettes that shoot their .22 pistols at a high volume.

Is the preferred ammo lead or "copper plated"?

(For gun cleaning and gun longevity purposes.)

She is shooting steel plates and paper. Her little 6" revolver performs very well on CCI Standard Velocity.

I've never seen much difference between plain lead or copper plated in a .22, for cleaning purposes. As far as longevity, you're unlikely to wear out the barrel on a .22 pistol with any ammo.

CCI Standard Velocity is decent ammo, my experience is that it's more accurate than most other US made .22 ammo. If her gun likes it and it's available, I'd stick with it.

A revolver does not require a locked wrist to fire and as the wheel chair serves also as a carrier, the weight of the revolver does not matter as much so you can go heavier with it (less recoil).

I like bolt actions and semi autos but in a wheel chair, operating an AR would be challenging, the recoil from a shotgun will be accentuated (when you sit because you cannot lean as much into the shotgun and the arms of the wheelchair might be a problem when running a pump action.

Lever actions, on the other hand, operate the bolt in a simple fashion that would seem to be to work better within a wheelchair. The classic objection to a lever action is based on it is harder to use when prone which does not appear to be a consideration here.

Most lever action pistol caliber cartridges hold more ammo (8-10 is normal) than the revolver and it hits harder if you get the 38+p or 357 Magnum.

Copper wash (very thin plating compared with centerfire) cuts down on that by eliminating the lube gunk.

Unless you are a wheelchair wizard doing wheelies and parkour stunts, you need concealable stopping power and accuracy. You need to stop the fight soonest. Depending on size of hand and arm strength, Ruger or S&W .357 revolvers are dependable. Go to a range with a gun wall and shoot what feels right and works for you. It’s good you’ve decided to not be a victim.

135 105 Whig and Rhomboid, thanks for the encouraging words. I've already bought a second set of dies for a different cartridge but will hold off on playing with those until I get a little more comfortable. I don' think reloading is going to be much cheaper than shooting store bought, but I think I'm going to enjoy it.

Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at October 27, 2024 08:01 PM (Hdixl)

Cost of reloading vs. factory ammo depends on the cartridge. You can probably buy factory 9mm or .556 cheaper than you can reload it. For less common cartridges, reloading will be cheaper, in particular for pistol, where brass lasts practically forever.

136 PI, interestingly, I clean my .22 bolties much less frequently now. It’s only if I see a decrease in accuracy that I do a full cleaning. Chambers get a scrub once in a while.
My 10-22 semiautomatic likes to be cleaned. A lot of the crap gets back in the action and gums things up. Same same my .22 auto pistols.

Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at October 27, 2024 08:30 PM (tT6L1)

148 FWIW, what EdL says also makes sense in having a PCC semi auto of some sort--Ruger, Smith and Wesson, Keltec, or High Point etc. make cheaper ones than the top of the line MP5 (and clones). You get a bit more felt recoil impulse from the cheaper blowback carbines but they are just as reliable as a roller lock in practice.

Some PCC will even use the same mags as a particular handgun---like Keltec does with Glock magazines and I think Ruger's PCC might.

You get higher capacity in a magazine fired PCC and easier to reload if you are planning for a large social event. But, other than maybe the 10 mm cartridge which is a bit much for self defense in a handgun, most semi auto pistol cartridges only gain a couple of hundred fps versus the same cartridge fired from a handgun. Most semi autos are optimized already for the handgun and not PCCs.

The old fashion lever action though gives something like 6-700 fps more in the 357 Magnum when going from pistol to carbine.

IIRC, he used a 1911 with a holster and magazine carriers mounted to the chair. He was a serious competitor, and rolled between stations. Curious if you have tried the new polymer coated match 22 LRs. Supposedly they are more accurate and less fouling.

I have fired Nyclads in the past out of a revolver and it eliminated leading as has the later HiTek (or variant) coated bullets in 9mm. Still have a bunch of 9mm Precision bullets that use a moly compound coating back from frequent range days.
Very little fouling and accurate.

Supposedly powder coating lead bullets does as well but seem to have hit or miss accuracy issues.

I was going to mention that some people with handicaps go all out - special chairs for racing. One could rig up a custom chair for race-gun competition too. Depends on the individual...

Quick sidebar - an uncle was a jumpmaster and rigger. He had a quad amputee who wanted to jump so made a custom harness for the jump.

Anyway, I assume this is just basic protection and like others would recommend going to a range (with rentals or a friend) and try many to see what works today when using your regular chair.

Cool. Glad to know that there is a Glock that I might be able to shoot well. I feel polymer framed pistols less in recoil than my metal framed ones now.

I have smallish hands (now ravaged by inflammatory arthritis) and simply cannot shoot a lot of pistols well like H&K due to being too large in the grip.

I was miserable when the Air Force switched from the Smith and Wesson Model 15 revolvers to the new Beretta 92 model and it immediately dropped my qualifying scores. It was simply too damn big for my hands.

Obviously my primary (L) is much stronger and all the shots were within the 3 inch circle. My (R) needs some work, but the shots were within the 6inch circle.
The most important note? Today was the first time I felt comfortable that if someone broke if or if I were approached, that I could successfully defend myself. That was my primary goal, and I'm thrilled to reach it. Of course, I will continue working to improve, but thought I'd share this milestone.

People with smaller hand sizes like me struggled. K Frame revolvers though were just right in the hand and no problem shooting those DA.

Just goes to show that how a firearm fits the hand is far more important than the brand name or the latest gizmo/cartridge/etc of it. From a Ransom Rest, nearly a century old K Frames can exhibit a 1 MOA grouping with ammo it likes at 25 yards.

200 Copper wash (very thin plating compared with centerfire) cuts down on that by eliminating the lube gunk.

Posted by: whig at October 27, 2024 08:18 PM

Thanks whig!

Even an Idiot like me knows there must be SOME reason they make the copper wash rounds.

I think I will run a box of lead, then examine and clean barrel, and then run a box of copper washed and do a comparison.

Right now some of the copper plated is only $0.01 more per round.

I think Ruger just added a 10mm version of their PCC too. Too bad we never saw that cartridge chambered in the P90 in 45 ACP which was actually built to handle the 10mm. Vast overkill in that firearm's design to shoot the 45 ACP which is a gentle cartridge by comparison.

I would only buy a small box of Remington's Golden Bullet gilding metal wash (why it is gold instead of copper colored). The Golden Bullet seems to be hit or miss with particular firearms. But in Remington's self defense ammo, that same gilding metal jacket tends to perform very well as a defensive centerfire cartridge under the Golden Saber and Ultimate Defense brand names. Accurate pretty much across the line with good expansion. Their HTP older hollow points, on the other hand, are not that good for expansion.

207 I love my SiG P938.

Answer to "snappy" recoil maybe... go down to some lighter projectiles, or lower pressure ammo.

Not everything has to be Hornady Critical Defense to be Good Ammo.

In any given gun, the BEST ammo are the loads you can aim, control and score follow-up shots, reliably. No matter how badass the load, it's best to be able to hit with more than just the first round.

Also. Consider the SiG , rubber, finger groove grip. Wraps around the frontstrap. Does work to reduce the Sting.

It was a rental so shooting the range's 115 grain Blazer.

It's a nice gun - it was even a Legion model. But seemed like a Baby 1911 would eat a little more of the recoil than the Polymer P365.

You adapted to it which is fine. I learned to shoot revolvers and that involves the power crease (aka first joint on the trigger) so you can shoot double action. So, I don't shoot with the pad well and tend to pull my shots. Would do even worse now as hand strength has declined.

Heavy is good. You don't have an action to take the edge off of recoil via springs, etc. on a lightweight snubbie versus a small semi auto.

Learn to shoot a heavier one before moving to a snubbie. A snubbie, like the Smith Chief Special has the same intrinsic accuracy that the bigger one does but people shoot it more poorly without a lot of practice due to recoil and the shorter sight distance.

K Frames are a happy size, the new Colts are nice (or an Official Police if going older), Security Six are as tough as hammers and about the same size but a bit heavier than the K Frame, and then you have new players on the field like Kimber (never shot one) or the Chiappias Rhino (never tempted to even look at one).

I shot and carried a Smith Chief's Special in Stainless for years and could pretty much clock it via a flash sight picture. Alas, arthritis and reloading via speedloaders became futile and moved to an XDS because of it.

Yes there are and that is a good thing. PCCs are easier to shoot for a lot of people than handguns and quite effective for self defense with virtually no recoil and pretty large capacity mags out there depending on free state or not status.

The 2020 Colt Python in its various forms has a smooth DA trigger pull, better (I think) than the vintage models. The Colt King Cobra (2019 version) is pretty good too, but .357 Magnum out of this small frame revolver is tough to control. You'll need a 3" barrel to cut back on the worst of the muzzle blast and recoil.

I still have my XD's as Glocks (aside from the 30) never fit me and I did not shoot as well with them.

First new firearm (usually could only afford used until then) I bought was a Springfield XD (with the safety) in 45 ACP. Very accurate as most 45's tend to be. The safety was in the same place and same size as my older used FM (Argentine) High Power. Like them but those bitty safeties chewed my thumb up in extended range sessions.

I like their XDS in 9mm for carry as well when I do my infrequent visits now out of the house but not carrying now due to med issue.

I have the tactical aka 5 inch version of the XD in 40 S&W--last firearm I bought several years ago and never yet fired it due to Covid and then medical issues.

The new Mod 3 looks appealing as it has the slide cut already for a red dot and is coming in at list price of $325. It uses the older versions magazines. But, have to get better before trying to buy a new gun that I cannot shoot.

Sorry about the limit. You might get a kick out of a lever action though--Rossi makes a clone of the old Winchester 92 which is nice enough, and Marlin, after going through Remington and now Ruger, is making their 1894 lever actions in 357 and 44 Magnums for a bit more. I think S&W has come up with a lever action (new design but has a misleading name) and then there is Henry which some people here have.
