  • Are Boeing's problems beyond fixable? (Financial Times / Ars Technica)

    Probably not.

They do need to ditch their space division, though. Find a buyer or just shut it down. Unless the government starts handing out cost plus contracts like candy again, it's a money pit for them.

The photoshopping of Red Kammie's face onto a dead woman's body to create an "authentic photograph" of Red Kammie in a McDonalds' workers uniform is both inept and despicable. One could even argue that it is stolen valor, as the woman they exploited was smart, accomplished and a positive contributor to society.

Canadian and white, too -- Suzanne Bernier Regan was her name. The source photo is here -- https://reganfamily.ca/Suzanne/growing.html

For a campaign that brought together the best and brightest staff from the Obama, Clinton, and Biden campaigns, they sure have done some extraordinarily stupid things. They should be made to eat this one from now to Election Day and beyond.

• Babel Street did not respond to multiple requests for comment sent to two press representatives and the company’s CEO Michael Southworth.
• Babel Street did not respond to questions asking about what restrictions exist for the tool.

GE Aerospace? Does that exist again? I worked for that company when they sold us out to Martin Marietta. That must have been about 25 years ago. Later, we were gobbled up by Lockheed, which is how we got Lockheed Martin. I guess that's still what it is.

An earlier place I worked was a huge aerospace company that eventually got gobbled up by Boeing, long after I no longer worked there. Boeing must be absolutely huge - who would be big enough to buy a significant part of it?

Posted by: MrExcitement at October 27, 2024 04:44 AM (hOOi9)

20 The Douglas part of McDonnell Douglas was in Southern CA, and made commercial aircraft, IIRC. They also had a plant in KS that made military aircraft. But that was all merged into Boeing, if I heard correctly. I have to wonder if anybody else in the US makes commercial aircraft. I would think their only real competition, globally, is in Europe.

Posted by: MrExcitement at October 27, 2024 04:48 AM (hOOi9)

21 Boeing is a mess. I read the article and 150 or so comments. The article is a restatement of what’s been known for a while but doesn’t really provide new insight to the company or the issues it faces.

The comments are loaded with clear eyed visionary leaders who correctly diagnosed the true ails and can fix it with one simple trick.

GE split up into multiple companies, a healthcare co, energy co, aircraft/space co. The aerospace co kept the ticker GE. Current GE market cap is $195 Billion while Boeing has a market cap of $95 Billion. So sayeth google anyway.

The northern coast of Western Australia is really a best-case location. Broome or Port Hedland don't even get as hot as Sydney (though they have more hot days) and nothing like the Sahara or Death Valley, but they have very low rainfall so it's almost always sunny.

They also have solid industrial infrastructure because it's a huge mining area. Port Hedland handles half a billion tons of shipping per year - it's in the top ten ports worldwide by volume.

53 This is so true:
@KTmBoyle
The most remarkable thing that Team Trump has done this election season is to find a new medium— not tv, not debate, not rallies. A medium with different and fractured audiences that isn’t captured. And then systematically put two candidates on every major podcast until they worked their way up to the Super Bowl of Podcasts.
Here’s a candidate everyone knows, everyone has an opinion on, but they decided to reintroduce him in a totally different medium that allows him to talk and talk and talk, flood the zone of information, in a medium that’s more smiles and shooting the sh*t than hits.

Love him or hate him, there’s a reason the phrase “media genius” was used when in 2016 when he won with rallies and television audiences.

No one saw this strategy coming.

This is truly the podcast election.

I can't imagine the Jewish vote isn't going to break hard for Trump based on what happened in Israel and his explicit support for Israel. The blue collar/union vote from what I can tell like Trump's proposal about bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States. Toss in a couple major left wing newspapers refused to endorse Harris and the usual collection of conservative voters... That is a broad and deep coalition of voters we've never seen before.

I have to say I'm not buying any of the polls and the Democrat bullshit. The mainstream media keeps pushing. The Harris campaign stalled out a couple weeks ago and since then it's been imploding.

Trump is his golden as his shoes he's selling. He could easily go 300 electoral votes or more. With a couple weeks to go it seems pretty clear this election is over except for the post election lawfare out of the Democrats, some obligatory Democrat sponsored antifa street riots and a couple constitutional crisis when it comes time to the certification.

I saw it last week when it was released. Still send shivers up my spine just thinking about what she said.

What a wretched human being.

175 College football has been primarily about money since at least 2010, with ESPN controlling the till, relishing in their role as kingmaker. Now that deal making happens more in the open, with more groups in the mix, and you can see how ugly it is.

I don't like the new way, either, but ESPN and weak conference leaders made it inevitable.

176 Boeing’s problems are not beyond fixable, but they need to immediately clear upper management and give harsh interviews to middle management. Clear accountants and non aerospace engineers from management ranks. Accounting acts in an advisory role, not a decision making role.

Return the company to its technical roots, making decisions on sound engineering and not on incremental cost decisions. People flying on your products rely on your design, construction, and maintenance not cutting safety corners to save a dollar on each of every 100,000 units.

177 Advo,

Where do you find all these White Knights that will right the ship?

Almost all these folks are retired and enjoying their freedom. There are a lot of them that were driven out and consider the situation hopeless.

The Government thinks they can solve a problem by throwing money at it. Others think you can just replace the management.

179 This week, my wife (the lovely and accomplished Annalucia) and I are reading aloud to each other Berry Gordy's autobiography, "To Be Loved".

Gordy was the founder Motown Records in the late 1950s, and its CEO up to its sale thirty years later. Motown was the label that nurtured the careers of many of the greatest R&B and soul performers of the 60s, including Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, Diana Ross, the Temptations, the Four Tops, and many others. Their music was immensely popular, and deeply influential on pop and rock music up to this day. (I grew up listening to Motown, and love it to this day.)

"To Be Loved" is a candid description of Gordy's life and the development of Motown. Gordy is candid about his failings, especially his failed marriages, but also celebrates Motown's many successes. He's also an entertaining storyteller; and his book is an in-depth look at how the grandson of a slave organized and ran one of the most successful music companies ever. It didn't hurt that some enormously talented musicians were playing literally within blocks of his studio: not just the stars, but the musicians of the house band, the "Funk Brothers". Highly recommended!
