Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Music Thread: A Real Classic!Commenter and Classical Music fan Hadrian the Seventh has taste that diverges somewhat from mine. His tends to the schmaltzy romantics, but he redeems himself with a lovely selection of the real heavyweights. Not enough, so he will be on probation until he puts Mozart's 15th and 16th Piano Concertos on the short list. Really...there's no accounting for taste. Anyway, he has lists of his favorites, and has graciously made them available to The Horde. The 200 The 1200 All reflect my appalling taste, prejudice for orchestral music and preference of the Romantic and Classical periods. Most are reasonably short, but if the inspiration supports it they may be longer. I'd be happy to send anyone who asks a thumb drive with .mp3's of all the pieces from either list. That's a generous offer, and one that will make you very happy if you take him up on it. It is amazing how much classical music has crept into popular culture, and you will discover that you know a fair number of pieces on his lists! I don't know much of their music, but they are one of those bands that is instantly recognizable. And what I have heard...I like! Strange? Sure. But also musical. I have linked this song...I think...but I really like it, and so you should too! The Waterboys Fisherman's Blues Enough of their music is irritating that I stopped listening, but this is a pretty good one. You should listen to more Southside Johhny And The Asbury Jukes. Love On the Wrong Side of Town is just...fun! Somebody mentioned "Korn" in the comments, and I thought, "Gee...I haven't heard them in years! I barely remember what kind of music they make. Well, there's a reason I don't remember. My brain blocked it all out because they are terrible. The Dixie Dregs? Refried Funky Chicken Not a bad song! And remember...this is a lighthearted thread. A week or so back I fell down the rabbit hole of Polandball's YouTube channel. It's mostly crudely-animated cartoons of geo-political jokes or commentary. But also a few parody music videos.
One such video was "Two Days into Belgum," a parody of that "Two Days into College" song that swept the internet earlier this year. It's a light-hearted take on Germany's apprehension during WWI. It's pretty good, and pretty funny. The second video was "Red Commie Club," a somewhat farcical take on Poland's attitude to being in the eastern block after WWII. (Spoiler, animated Poland was feeling much better about it than any actual Poles of the day.) Because the song was pretty catchy, I tried to track down the original song that the video was parodying....And that was a mistake. I had to purge my YouTube preferences (lots of clicking 'I'm not interested' and 'Don't recommend this channel') so that my feed could go back to being clean and un-disturbing... One of the coolest things about a Southside show was when he often closed with The Fever. Invariably, the crowd knew every word and would often drown him out on the chorus. He'd leave the stage and then come back out for a half hour or more of encore calls. Great stuff.

========= That is a great album, through and through. Ol' Boz is a real bluesman, never got the success he deserved. I got to hear him live with The New York Rock and Soul Revue when they hit Cinci in '92, I think. The tour was so popular Donald Fagen (MC & performer) and Walter Becker (also performer) decided to get the band back together and take Steely Dan on the road live in 1995, their first concert tour since 1973! Donald said "Let's bring on Boz Scaggs", and Boz walked on as the band slid seamlessly into "Dirty Low Down". It was magical. I liked the one song so I got The Spin Doctors Pocket full of Kryptonite when I bought my first CD player. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at October 26, 2024 07:40 PM (ndoNK) I'm trying to remember. I would have bought it from the late, great Tower Records in Lower Manhattan in the 80s. Either Elvis Costello's Greatest Hits, or Anita Baker's Rapture album. Both are gems. 83 BTW Boz is not specifically featured on any tracks of the concert CD they released. I guess they wanted to save time & not make it a double disk. Still, give the NY Rock and Soul Review a listen, it is some great music.

The first single from Silk Degrees was Lowdown, which actually charted first on Black R&B radio. It owes a lot to drummer Jeff Porcaro who turned a Purdie shuffle into a disco groove.
I was at a Boz show on July 13, 1977. About seven songs in some guy yells "Loan me a dime!" Boz yelled back, "the price went up to a quarter." Then something happened. When we all regrouped two nights later to finish the show, same bat time, same bat channel, the same guy yells "loan me a quarter!" Posted by: Ignoramus at October 26, 2024 08:06 PM (Gqoy+) 97

Fun story about Dickie Betts (Allman Brothers) and Boz Skaggs, from an interview with Betts. In an interview, someone asked him about the source of the title, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". Dickie said, well it was like this - Boz Skaggs had a good looking girlfriend, and he was out of town touring a lot, so Dickie and her hooked up when Boz was out of town. They used to go to a quiet spot in the local cemetery to do their thing, since they had found a secluded spot that no one was in. The girl asked Dickie to write a song for her, and he agreed, but he couldn't use her name since Boz would find out what was going on. So the closest grave marker to their hook up spot in the cemetery said "Elizabeth Reed" on it, and that was the source of the title, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed."

Speaking of Creedence Clearwater Revival, in my working days, my employer had a summer promotion of "Cruisin' Classic" cassettes (that's how old I am), and the first tape included CCR's "Proud Mary." As soon as the cassette was released, we received a letter from John Fogerty's attorney that we were in violation of his copyright. It was fun and gratifying as a rookie copyright attorney to inform him that, oops, John had sold his rights to the music and that my employer had paid for the rights to include the song on the cassette. Fogerty was pissed that an oil company was distributing his music!!

A story, just amoungst us... One time we went to Birmingham to see them play at Baby Does in 5 Points. We had a table right by the stage and had a 6 shooter (IYKYK) set in the middle of the table. we got baked with the purple sensamilla one of us had grown that year. I think the podcast blitz, doing Rogan, Paul, Von, Nelk Boys, Dillon, etc. is good wholesale politics, especially in the home stretch. Smart move by the Trump campaign.
But I just like it on GPs. It's high damned time that a major political campaign recognized the facts, and moved away from the network/cable model of campaigning toward media that people who aren't in nursing homes actually view. Werner feels obliged to make mention of Kraftwerk. Ja, I know, I am a Kraut, but they were and are revolutionary. Take a glance across the entirety of present-day genres of music and it will be rare that you do not see their influence, even if the performing artists are not aware of it. The wizardry they used in "Autobahn" where one actually has the auditory (illusionary, but still) sensation of a vehicle passing through one's head from one ear to the other still impresses today. It is amusing that their lyrics "Fahren, fahren farhen," which mean "Drive, drive, drive" are still misinterpreted as an allusion to The Beach Boys' "Fun, fun, fun."
Equally, Werner feels obliged to slam Rammstein - their song "Deutschland" and its accompanying video are perhaps the best depiction of their lack of creativity and cartoonish view of the world and global politics. "99 Red Balloons" brings more to the table musically than all their work, and that is saying something. Well, at least Werner feels a sense of obligation.
Posted by: Notorious BFD Ach, of course Werner feels obligations. Remember, I kept Kinski employed for a sizable part of his career, and saw to it that he saw the Vet four times a year. On that last, just consider the size of the cat carrier that I had to heft each time. It was from a sense of obligation to all humanity that I did my best to prevent the musical career of Björk, back when she known merely as Björk Guðmundsdóttir. I failed, as is apparent to all, but I tried. Icelanders are notoriously quick-minded and nimble, and were it not for the volcanoes, the entirety of the world might be underneath their control. Yet one cannot weep over past failures - otherwise Werner should still despair over the fact that Gary Busey continues to get acting roles. I tried, I truly did. Alas. We got a pizza took it back to our campsite, realized it was basically runny tomato sauce over a big matzo cracker. It set a new standard for awfulness - we tried to give it to the dog, a half husky who would eat anything, and he took a sniff and looked up at us with a look that said "are you fukkin kiddin me?"
Posted by: Tom Servo That reminded me of the first time my future husband took me to a bowling alley/pizza parlor in his little hometown. The pizza was basically tomato sauce on a pizza crust with cut up bologna instead of pepperoni. Yum. Posted by: Tuna at October 26, 2024 09:36 PM (oaGWv) 270

241 Early 80's music - Bananarama was kind of a spin off of Talking Heads, out of the Rhode Island scene, and I always had a thing for their music.
======== Bananarama was a good girl group, not just saying that because they had some nice videos on MTV back in the day. (Although it helped!) They started out in the UK with message minded New Wave band The Fun Boy Three, and the two trios together made a decent band. See their version of "Our Lips Are Sealed". Then the girls got "discovered after a couple fo good hits & got brought to the USA to go mainstream. I like listening to their songs, which usually put me ina good mood. REOJOURNEYSPEEDWAGON
KANSASHATCHETTYX Nazareth was pretty good on tour. And they toured a lot, constantly. Tickets were $4.50 and $5.50 or whatever. "An Evening With" ... Styx, was an example of a band that was pretty hard rock. Really. I saw it live, but I think bands were required to record sappy ballads as part of their contract. Nothing else makes sense and also neatly explains Phil Collins. Has a demonstrably female person ever expressed an indication that Rush is a good band, however? Or "Yes", those guys. The dichotomy or quadrotomy or whatever, there were the stoners and rock and rollers, Disco in there somewhere for people who wanted to dance (and actually score chicks). The cerebral stuff didn't get any airplay or radio time except for college radio FM. Punk came along because everybody was sick of the "Arena Rock" era, and big hair and derivatives.
