Seriously, Coolio and Weird Al were in a feud once?
Weird Al asks the original artists permission for his parody songs (although he isn't legally required to). He wrote Amish Paradise (parody of Coolio's Gangster's Paradise) and asked one of Coolio's agents who gave approval but the agent apparently didn't clear it with Coolio. Coolio was upset when he heard it on the radio (because he didn't give permission/didn't know his agent did, and also because GP meant something personally to him). andycanuck, reading your auto-translated post from former Pres. Bolsonaro last thread, thought I saw a funny mistranslation ("Forro de SP"), which I was sure meant to refer to Folha de Sao Paulo, one of Brazil's oldest newspapers and sort of the equivalent of the Wall Street Journal (at least in the past).
Funny because "forro" (emphasis on the last syllable) is of course the northeast Brazilian close-dancing style. So I guess there's a sarcastic nickname for the Folha de SP now, and Bolsonaro was using it. There might be other meanings for "forro" or other word-plays at work, not sure - been a long time since I spent time there. Posted by: rhomboid at October 18, 2024 10:34 PM (GcNJ2) 69

Sure, except the melody is ripped from a Stevie Wonder song, IIRC.
from wiki: "Coolio performed this song live at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards with L.V. and Wonder" ... "Stevie Wonder received crediting for the composition and lyrics due to the interpolation of his song "Pastime Paradise" from his 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life." ... "Due to the sampling of Wonder's music, "Gangsta's Paradise" is one of the few Coolio tracks that did not contain any profanity, as Wonder did not appreciate his song being paired with it. Coolio said, "I had a few vulgarities... and he (Wonder) wasn't with that. So I changed it. Once he heard it, he thought it was incredible" Posted by: Chuck C at October 18, 2024 10:50 PM (yOPBE) 114

Yes, Peter Sellers nailed that one. Terry Southern had Adlai in mind when he wrote the book, too, I've read. Stevenson was universally perceived as an "egghead" professor type. He wasn't. He just looked & sounded as if he was. Had a good sense of self-effacing humor. According to legend, when he was forced to wait in Paris while De Gaulle's motorcade passed by, Stevenson said, "I always seem to be getting in the way of national heroes." Publius, I think the baro was 29.55 the other day here (I’ve an old Gischard altimeter that I am calibrating by boxing it in over time. It is pretty accurate, but should be set in the middle of its range.
What I really need to do is find a measured location precisely at 7,000 feet (halfway in the device measurement range) . Right now it seems to be holding or has a resolution error of approx. + or - 150 feet, which may be as good as it gets. Oh yeah. So why is 29.22 hurricane and 29.55 just a cloudy day? I never paid too much attention to barometric pressure, just the trend up or down. I figured a hurricane was 27 or 28 or something like that. At the center when it's going full bore over water, it is. Milton was in the top 5 lowest in the Atlantic side, hitting 897 mbar, or 26.49" Hg. Those pressures I quoted above are relative, converted to sea level (via the "standard atmosphere" barometric formula, the "altimeter setting"). Absolute pressures ("station pressure" is the official term, I think) was 28.33" low, and 29.62" for that. The adjustment is 0.88" for this elevation. If you're getting high up in altitude, pressure gets lower and lower. At 10,000' standard pressure (for a standard atmosphere) is around 20.5". Above that, it gets well below 20" absolute. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 19, 2024 12:24 AM (w6EFb) 199

Doh! The altimeter knows we’re gonna need that scale as a practical matter.
So I want to set the 0 mark to the barometric pressure as indicated by weather service apps, correct? I never understood pressure altitude, though I can understand it might vary from my exact location? Posted by: Common Tater at October 19, 2024 12:32 AM (rjNWs) 204
>> So I want to set the 0 mark to the barometric pressure as indicated by weather service apps, correct?
Yes. And I don't know nuttin' 'bout the details of altimeter settings, just the general principles. The altimeter gives you altitude by comparing measured pressured to the known sea level pressure. The airport/NWS sends out the info, and you adjust your altimeter zero to that, as it does vary all the time. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 19, 2024 12:36 AM (w6EFb) 205

The sky has been very clear here for the last few days. The other morning I had to leave at about 6 am for a meeting across the bay to the west just as the moon was setting. It was right in front of me as I drove over the bridge, huge, bright and orange. It lit up the bay with a weird and warm light. Fall is my favorite season. When I was younger a good pocket altimeter by Thommen was probably a couple hundred bucks, now they aren’t worth much, as electronics (even smart phone devices) have all that, and more.
Pretty much anything important I want redundant backup, and devices that particularly do not require batteries or blue teeth to operate. But now I can get a good used Thommen altimeter for $10 probably. Posted by: Common Tater at October 19, 2024 12:36 AM (rjNWs) 208

For an example, here's the GSP observations page. This is an ASOS station, and gives readings hourly. This is for general weather info. The aviation readings are updated much more frequently, broadcast, and automated data links now: https://tinyurl.com/26jc9v7x Note pressure is given as "altimeter setting", which is the relative pressure we use. The "sea level pressure" is something else. The altimeter value uses the "standard atmosphere", which is a given sea level temperature and a standard lapse rate, or variation of temperature with altitude. The sea level pressure, given in mbar and not "Hg, is based on a more sophisticated calculation which uses the actual observed temperature values. So, "pressure altitude" is the result of the more simple value. It will be close, but not really the actual true height above sea level. Right, the analog altimeter is of course also a barometer.
By a series of adjustments - setting the barometric pressure to a known accurate standard, the needle should correspond to the correct elevation, and vice versa: Going back and forth the error rate has declined, it is accurate now, within maybe a couple hundred feet. But the error rate tends to be larger at the low and high ends of the scale. Posted by: Common Tater at October 19, 2024 12:42 AM (rjNWs) 214

Louis Farrakhan is one of those people who vaccilates between being a raving lunatic, and a man with a great deal of common sense who cannot abide a layabout ninja who won't work or take care of his family.
I suspect he also has strong opinions about a party who thinks gender is a choice, that men can get pregnant, and that boys should be in girls' locker rooms. He is choosing the blue-eyed devil that may come from another planet ( I think he changed his mind on that one) but who has put his money where his mouth is and done tangible work to help the black community, over the actual devil who encourages fatherless households and aborting black babies by the literal hundreds of thousands, never mind all the dependence on ( a white) government and all the trans insanity. I just finished "The Inside" 2007 from France. Only 82 minutes. Thankfully "Terrifier" 1 and 2 prepared me. That was a tight, beautiful gorefest where a woman with scissors goes after a 9 month pregnant woman. And they showed muslim rioters!! And arrested one. It was pretty brutal. Can't wait to see it again. About 6 months ago, I had barely seen maybe 50 movies and watched Disney and Nick kids comedy shows because they were funny, cute, no gay or black racism shit and I didn't want to be pissed off 24-7. Republican challenger Chandler Stewart Hadraba (ID 16) is running on a Bigfoot plank: "I really want to make Idaho number one for Bigfoot tourism. I think this is a creative way to have our rural communities and remote areas benefit more from tourism in such a great state,” says Republican candidate for State Representative Chandler Hadraba. Hadraba’s proposal to make Bigfoot Idaho’s state animal — and even offer Bigfoot hunting tags — stands in contrast to more conventional campaign promises, but he argues that his ideas can bring more tourism revenue to rural areas in Idaho. Wandered off to get caught up on the last three Cafe videos. Then I looked up and watched both Gangster and Amish Paradises videos, which caused me to look up Amish Paradise on Wikipedia, which mentioned the Gangster vid featured Michelle Pfeiffer, in connection with the movie Dangerous Minds, with Florence Henderson in Amish parodying Pfeiffer's bit in Gangster, and then looking up Dangerous Minds on W, I learned that there was a short-lived Dangerous Minds TV series, starring Annie Potts, the Ghostbusters secretary, and that's why I've been away so long.
And now it's past time for me to say so long. Who was cameo in Amish? What the heck happened in that Boom! video? In The thrill of victory, that wasn't Mickey, that was Minnie. Whats up this is somewhat of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors
or if you have to manually code with HTML. I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding knowledge so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Posted by: modelporntube.com at November 11, 2024 09:48 PM (k6/az) 287
