  • WordPress looks to be entering a doom spiral as Mad King Matt Mullenweg tightens his grip. (404 Media) (archive site)
After an exodus of employees at Automattic who disagreed with CEO Matt Mullenweg's recently divisive legal battle with WP Engine, he's upped the ante with another buyout offer - and a threat that employees speaking to the press should "exit gracefully, or be fired tomorrow with no severance."
This divides the company neatly into three factions:

    1. Those with principles who will quit - and take advantage of the severance package on offer because principles don't pay the rent.
    2. Those who see the writing on the wall and get while the going is good.
    3. True believers.

True believers can be good if you're tackling a difficult problem under an experienced leader, like catching an office building falling from space.

    It can also produce Jonestown.

This is looking more like the latter.

WordPress itself will survive, since it's open source, but the company and foundation behind it won't.

  • Sad to say I was today years old when I realised why the company is called Automattic.

One of those things that's cute in a toddler but diagnostic of malignant narcissism in a CEO.

3 Evening and morning to all the outposts of the AoSHQ Empire! There was a discussion about the average and median age of commenters here, and a (shrewd) guess was made that the average is about 55. I skew a little higher, but have been here for about 13 years, so that's not a bad figure to use.

Thirteen years. My gosh. (I was reading before I started to post, too, so maybe a bit longer.)

I slept almost enough last night, and I have a long walk to and from my staff meeting this morning, which can stand in for my workout now. Pffft. Call me a slacker, I don't care.

14 Temp of 57 F. right now, with humidity low enough that the "feels like" temp is . . . 56! Maybe I'll wear my leather jacket to work today.

I'm still planning to run up to the full-scale tobacco and pipe shop in Jackson tomorrow. It's a three-hour drive each way, so I'd better be sure I'm ready for it. I'll check the tires, fill up with ethanol-free gas, and roll. Surely there'll be a decent place or two to have lunch on the Interstate if not in the vicinity of the pipe shop.

And I'll bring a little cash. I don't plan to buy a pipe -- I've got plenty -- but they have a couple of tobacco blends that sound interesting, and an ounce of each is about $6.

When I was in college (and still drinking), mornings were something I shunned. And most drama dept. rehearsals were in the afternoon anyway. Then I started working and doing mornings, and my whole system shifted. Now I want to get most things done by noon (though full-time work keeps interfering), take a nap, and relax in the afternoon and evening.

While I'm not a big Kevin Plank fan, nor an UnderArmor fan-boy, we do have a UA store at the outlet in North Charleston. And their clothing does work well, and washes/dries rather quickly.

So..yeh, everything except the scarf came home with me yesterday. And everything was about 70% below retail.

A big sale on things you need -- when you need them -- is a good thing!

I still call the long woolen thing a "muffler" after H.G. Wells, who described the Invisible Man wearing one. The word "scarf," to me, is that silken item women wear for an accent, or once used to wrap over their hair and tie under their chin when they went out.

Now with winter approaching I don't expect any activity until spring '25, if then.

'Combating Hate Speech'. Just who gets to decide what's hate speech? Only the government with its struggle sessions?

IMAO, all hate speech/crime laws are illegal. Making 'hate' an enhancement in a crime is taking away everyone's Constitutional right to hate anything they bloody well please. Something is a crime or it's not, hate has nothing to do with it. When you get down to brass tacks, 'hate speech/crime laws' are anti-Caucasian-American laws, seeing's how they mostly get charged only one way.

Morons, help me with an argument. The latest "white privilege" claim is based on generational wealth. Does anyone have any data, facts, etc to counter this argument with? My immediate answer is that generational wealth is actually something of a myth, since it's found not to last more than three generations. Also, every American right now has the opportunity to create personal wealth.

It's kind of early and there aren't many of us here, so you may see this question again later today.

What brought it up is this youtube where a Gen-Hopeless idiot girl dissolve in tears as a Black man tells her to shove her "white privilege" nonsense.

'Generational wealth' has, as a starting premise, a two-parent family. It's very difficult for single parents to save any money to pass along. I can also see most generational wealth starting from inheriting a parents' house as that's usually the most expensive thing most people ever buy.

72 Authorizing military use of deadly force against civilians absolutely violates the Posse Comitatus act - which prohibits the military being used to enforce civilian law. And no, liberal idiots, they can't be used to "assist" police in enforcing civilian law, as that IS enforcing civil law, the same way a desk SGT is enforcing civilian law just by their position, even though he is not out in the field making arrests. And no, you fools can't deputize private companies to censor people either: see the “Mississippi Burning” case for the definition of a government agent. This is absolutely the most lawless administration in the history of this country.

That's true, and I'm pretty sure Thomas Sowell has some stats showing that Black homeownership was solidly on the rise and would have been equal to white homeownership by now had the left not set out to destroy Black society. That's not white privilege, it's Black folly that they fell for it.

80 We HAVE TO WIN THE HOUSE in this election. Otherwise Raskin is plotting to try to use the 14th amendment to keep Trump out of office. Of course it does not apply as Trump has never even been charged with insurrection, let alone convicted, and the impeachment for that failed in the Senate. However the fact that Raskin's plot is a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, and signifying nothing" doesn't matter. If the Democrats control the house all those idiots will join together to pull it off.

81 ( Provided we overlook the Democratic House kneeling wearing those African scarves)

No, that kneeling was not what people think it was. It was Nazi Pelosi and her friends getting to re-inact a white person holding down a black man, and it symbolized exactly the way the Democrats have been holding down blacks since Lyndon Johnson. I'm surprised they were able to keep from laughing while they were doing it.

82 My understanding of generational wealth Is wealth so great that it is completely self-sustaining over many generations. I point to the Kennedys, the Fords, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk as examples on the extreme end of the wealth scale. How far this pushes down in terms a family wealth. I can't effectively say, but it would be a net worth probably in the tens of millions of dollars. For us schlubs who have done well in life, which I define as we live comfortable lives, have money for retirement and can have a comparatively small inheritance to pass on, I hardly see as generational wealth as most of that will be dissipated who once passed on to the next generation. Still having something to pass on is a foundational aspect that builds over time if fortunate and what that is precisely is how to be successful people in big and small ways. Money for the most part has nothing to do with this. And most certainly this generational wealth has nothing to do with the false assertion of white privilege is what makes this possible. What makes it possible is individual freedom and making good choices over time.
