10 My 20+ year old workstation finally gave up and died. RIP. Anyway, I still have 2 laptops and one of them is pretending to be a workstation, until I figure out what I want to do. No rush. I do like those mini-PCs. I really don't want MS Windows. Linux seems just fine. I've noticed some of the Beelink mini-PCs come with Ubuntu, so I do have options.

14 If you are running Windows 10, a year from now Microsoft will finally stop bothering you with pointless updates. (Ars Technica)

I bet they don't though. - Pixy

I agree with this assessment. Currently about 2/3 of Windows PCS are running Windows 10, presumably many of them not able to upgrade to Windows 11. The public, government, and corporate uproar over Microsoft single-handedly obsoleting something like half the PCS on the planet at the exact same moment simply isn't going to fly. My current desktop PC will be 8 years old when the shut-off date hits. It's more than ready to be replaced. But being at a point in life where I don't want to deal with building a PC, I'm waiting for Intel to get their act together so Dell can sell me a proper PC that doesn't blow up its CPU after a few years and/or has hyper threading. I've been holding my breath now for a while and I'm about ready to turn blue and pass out unfortunately. What a mess!. It's almost enough to make me want to buy an Apple PC. I said almost.

23 "What I’m so proud of is that we stood up, we didn’t step back. Everybody here had the courage of their convictions, and they stood tall,” Newsom said. This comment was in response to a new California law that puts the state in charge of managing oil refinery reserves in an attempt to avoid price hikes. This is insanity. For years, the state of California has restricted and driven refineries nearly out of existence and by doing so created shortages and exorbitant prices for fuel. Once again government creates the problem and solves it with more government which will create more chaos. If Harris gets elected she's bringing that same courage of a convictions to the White House.

Jim McCloskey fought for years to prove Roger Coleman, executed by VA for rape/murder, was innocent. Roger was strapped into the chair in 1992 and said as his last words 'you murder an innocent man'. A decade later, VA did DNA testing (the case was originally from, 1980-81). Guess what? McCloskey was played. Coleman raped and killed his sister-in-law, Wanda Jean. Supposedly, Coleman 'still haunts' McCloskey.

46 I had a fascinating conversation with a very sharp HVAC person long time back about managing a home HVAC system efficiently, and he mentioned specifically lowering the temp when you were away then a reset when you got back, and why over time it results in increased fuel cost.

Comfort is achieved when the ambient temp is at a level where you are just that--comfortable. This means when the air and all objects within a living space are at or close to the same. Thus if the temp is at a lower level than is tolerable, raising it until things "warm up" means then the heating unit will run correspondingly.

Hence the increased cost.

47 Might buy a half a cord of firewood for this winter. Probably only have 7-10 nights, if that where we have a fire. Out on the patio, sweats, wool socks and throw blankets usually do the trick. I'd like to have a fire pit or a table with a gas flame but the patio is pretty low.

Sq ft? Dunno. Old, two story farm house. 4 gables, I guess you'd say. Lap siding, original windows and insulation in attic only.

Have gone without a/c for four summers now. Only really bad part about that is when it gets 90+, and working outside, when I've had enough there's no coming in and cooling off for a bit. Then back out. Done is done.
Have pretty much decided next spring, for 70th b'day gift to self, get it fixed.

I've noticed that over the years with my central air unit; I've left it at about 74-75 while I'm gone, not 78, and edged it down to 72-73 when I come home. Not sure if this applies the same way to the window unit I've been running instead since July. It has an "ECO" mode that cuts the unit and compressor off when the inside temp gets to the set figure.

My power bill has been about $15-20/month less this summer compared to the central unit.

58 The prevailing wisdom years ago, especially for large buildings, was to turn the hvac into an "unoccupied" mode when physically unoccupied overnight or on weekends, essentially turning the unit off and only using it if the space temperature gets way out of range, say below 65 or above 80. Then put the unit into a warm-up or cool-down mode to quickly recover back to a comfortable setpoint.

However, it turns out that's not terribly efficient anyway, buildings aren't really "unoccupied" as long as they used to be anymore, and engineers started designing units that were a bit undersized for the space even normally meaning there's no hope of recovering from setup or setback in a reasonable time anyway.

I've personally been working towards a softer kind of unoccupied state in the buildings i control, essentially the same but not as aggressive. I think some other companies are too, and calling it "standby" instead of "unoccupied" mode.

I went to Dicks Sporting goods with my sons because they have been saving their money and wanted to buy a Nike Tech jacket ( apparently it’s all the rage) when we asked if they had any in stock the young man at the door said they will only be selling them online for the foreseeable future due to overwhelming theft. He said they will be hiring private security because at least once a week kids go in and steal armfuls of merchandise and walk right out of the door. This is obviously not sustainable. I don’t understand why this is tolerated and allowed to happen.

Fantasy setting about a man who decides at 30 to become an adventurer. He is looked down on for his age but he underwent training by the most powerful adventuring groups in the world.

One of the things that got my attention was that he was constantly sparring against people who were prodigies. Because of their skill level, they were never defeated. The main character had a lot of practice and constant improvement to overcome them. It's a bit like my Aikido teacher talking about "try to improve by 1-2% with every practice."

In a sense, that's what humans do, to. People very rarely use pure unfiltered logic, even when they're trying to. We slap together busted syllogisms that "look like" logic and pat ourselves on the back for it, but I've had a sneaking suspicion that some of the shortcomings of what they're calling artificial intelligence are starting to butt up against the shortcomings of actual meat-based intelligence.

"No, no, that's pretty accurate, actually."

84 It's ironic that we have brains and intelligence that are flawed and unreliable, so we invented computers to be rigidly algorithmic to make up for it, and then we used those computers to make algorithms that are intentionally flawed and unreliable so that they Look Like Us.

85 Just because there are no reactors operating in the US with molten salt really means nothing. The US really has a number of blind spots in it's technological development and because of Big Reactor, small-scale nuclear power is one.

Read up on the Topaz reactor the Soviets designed and built. It a good starting point if you want to go down this rabbit hole.

Some drop rants about how stupid everyone here is and how great they are and then flounce.

The FB group for thd community in which our Sussex County place dwells has a dedicated group to exchange information and the like.

It allows one to post anonymously. I do not know how, nor do I care.

However, most anonymous posts are either barbed remarks -- directed at whom, you cannot tell -- or inane observations posted, I think, because their owners believe themselves to be profound, deep thinkers.

A commonly posted rejoinder to such nonsense is, "Well, that's what you get when you allow anonymous posting.".

It is time to start asking, "If you do not like anonymous posts, then why don't we insist that the site moderator(s) turn it off?" Problem solved.

Congratulations!
Long story behind my journey. Original instructor literally lived with Sil Lum master for 6.5 years till joining service. While in, he "borrowed" techniques from any style that worked and were practical. Spent 6 years under him.
When I moved back to home state I visited a number of dojos looking to continue but always left, just shaking my head.
Finally found a guy, another noncommercial school, with 3rd to 6th degree rankings in judo, jiu-jitsu, aikido and karate.
He'd be asking how I did this or that when it was stand up but, when he did get ahold of me,,, ow!! My knee, wrist, finger...

90 Even though I've been using 3D printers at work, having one in your home is awesome.

If I could 3D print toys when I was a kid, it would have been mind blowing.

Sure it probably would have been just printing Lincoln Logs and Erector Set Pieces, still, it would have been pretty sweet.

These kids today do not understand how good they have it.

Had a thought (uh-oh) the other day that it is people, who God created, trying to create God.
Yeah, um, good luck with that.

94 89 Congratulations!

Thank you. It's been just over a year and I don't feel strange wearing the black belt.

While in, he "borrowed" techniques from any style that worked and were practical.

That's a smart approach. I have both LINE training and MCMAP courtesy of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children to borrow from myself.

Finally found a guy, another noncommercial school, with 3rd to 6th degree rankings in judo, jiu-jitsu, aikido and karate.

We're definitely noncommercial as well. My teacher has groused about the fact that some of the flaws in Aikido is we generally don't advertise and that a lot of demo videos look choreographed. I'd like to help him get some more practical stuff uploaded without it running afoul of Japan.

but, when he did get ahold of me,,, ow!! My knee, wrist, finger...

Let me guess; you barely saw him move as well?

Yeah, um, good luck with that."

A more useful analogy would be to approach it idea of AI as Man creating a machine similar to God creating Man.

Whereas the machine could be theoretically "perfected".

And people ask why the first thing I do when I buy a computer is nuke Windows and install Linux.

Posted by: Nemo at October 15, 2024 09:01 AM (S6ArX)

98 You'll be able to get support for Windows 10 after 2025, you'll just have to pay for it. Microsoft has always been happy to extend support for legacy OSes if you purchase the appropriate support plan.

Microsoft isn't exactly on the side of the angels but it no longer matters what they do, people are going to bitch and complain anyway. People complain Windows is virus bait, so they tighten up the security model and then people complain that their ancient software that writes directly to protected system directories won't work any more.
