43 I think what's going on here is NOT a depiction of the Immaculate Conception as a verb. This work is about the glorification of Mary. She IS the Immaculate Conception, according to Catholics. It's a title for her. There are other symbols and imagery here for her too: the lily and roses, and the crown of stars. She is surrounded by angels and clouds, and glows with this aura, and she stands on an orb. Above her head and in shadow are a crown and I think a rosery. I also think its interesting that as she holds part of her blue cloak to her chest, it takes the shape of a heart.

58 re: 24 - While for Catholics, Scripture is not the only carrier of Revelation, most Catholics would see Mary's Immaculate Conception (her being conceived without Original Sin) as an inference from Gabriel's announcement 'Hail, full of grace.' Of course, there are alternative translations but much of the motivation for the alternative translations comes a desire to undermine Catholic doctrine so they should not be taken too seriously. Having said that, the idea that Mary was conceived without Original Sin has been a controversial one. St. Thomas Aquinas, in fact, argued against it but after almost 2000 years of debate, the Church concluded that her complete freedom from sin was indeed a fact.

72 I'm not familiar with this work but the darkness could be dirt and dust accumulation over time. Oils tend to get dirty easy. There are many works that scholars thought were intentionally dark. Turns out, after cleaning, they're pretty bright. Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" for example.

102 Angels are actually some of the largest, and most danger-filled beings in the Spiritual Realms.

There's a REASON that their first words to such as Mary and the Shepherds were "Fear Not...."

Almighty God does not send fat, wee babies to fight the most important spiritual battles. No, He sends Michael the Archangel, and Gabriel and others of their kind. Think, Michael Bay's "Transformers", only more badass by orders of magnitude.

And they grind the (real) Hell's Angels under their heel, like the puny, Defeated at the Cross cockroaches that they actually are.

This, I think, may be the biggest failing of the classic artists, the failure to grasp and render the true nature of God's Angelic Host.

104 Luke the Doctor

26 Six months after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. 27 The angel went to a virgin promised in marriage to a descendant of David named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary.

28 When the angel entered her home, he greeted her and said, “You are favored by the Lord! The Lord is with you.”

Saint Anne and the Immaculate Conception
Ca. 1600. Wash, Pencil, Pencil, Grey-brown ink on dark yellow paper.
Not on display

St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, is the elderly female saint kneeling on the floor in the interior of a temple and the heavenly apparition that takes place above her head foretells her conception of Mary, the child in the upper register of the composition in a flowing dress, standing on a crescent moon, symbol of the Immaculate Conception, who in her turn would be the mother of Jesus. Winged angels, to either side of Mary, hold symbols of her sacred life as well as of her purity.

========

Paul Schrader wrote a book about this issue within the realm of cinema (he wrote it before he started as a filmmaker himself, when he was just a critic).

His conclusion is probably the best part of the book, and in that he compares what he had been outlining through what he called Transcendental Style in the films of Ozu, Bresson, and Dreyer with more "traditional" views of the religious, focusing on Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments.

The point of the Transcendental Style is about elevating the human, to transcend to another level through specific cinematic techniques which emphasized stillness. The point of The Ten Commandments film was to make the divine more human and easily digestible.

I've always preferred the former, but it requires investment on the part of the audience and very specific techniques from the artist. The latter feels more bombastic and less about the divine, less about inciting awe in something bigger and less strictly human in terms.

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at October 16, 2024 09:45 AM (v6JzV)

Intentionally dark, I think. Coello was of Portuguese descent, but his career was in Spain. This painting was likely painted in the early 1680s, during the reign of Charles II (Spain). Spain was on the decline and in distress. The British and the Dutch were the dominant powers at sea, revolts in the American colonies, and the "Little Ice Age" caused famine on the Iberian peninsula. Wiki says that Spain's population decreased from 8.5 million in 1600 to 6.6 million in 1680.

The world was a dark place for Spain.

149 Actual somewhat interesting discussion at DU today. Is higher voter turnout a good or bad sign for Trump?

Georgia SHATTERS Early Voting Record in GOOD NEWS for Kamala Harris. Early voting has shattered the early voting turnout in 2020.

How is that good news for us? Republicans have pushed early voting HARD this cycle.

Historically, high turnout is a positive sign for the Democrats. Most of the early votes are in Atlanta. High turnout gives us our best chance. This is why Republicans work so hard to suppress the vote.

Trump has changed the dynamics so thoroughly that I am not sure high turnout helps. Democrats used to have a hold on low-propensity voters. This is why they would always get creamed, it seemed, in midterm elections in the 90s and 2000s.

Trump has shifted things so much that a lot of those voters are now MAGA and the more consistent voters, those who tend to show up every election (generally white collar voters) have moved Democratic. In 2016, turnout was higher than 2012 and Democrats lost. In 2020, turnout was at an all-time high (well 100 year high) and Democrats barely won.

Trump definitely targets low propensity voters.

=======

I've been watching some analysis on the first day's numbers. The biggest point to take away, since GA doesn't do partisan voter registration but does track racial data, is that first day In Person Early Voting was 30% black.

High, huh? Not in comparison to the past two cycles that were nearly 40% each.

Where are the votes coming from? County by county, there's a large swell from rural Republican counties. Dekalb was high, Fulton was low (or the other way around, can't remember), so they kind of even out in the heavy blue areas.

Combine that with FL's early voting data, which is trending slightly more R than even 2022 when DeS won by 19%, and you've got potential evidence of a healthy Republican year.

We'll see.

Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at October 16, 2024 10:29 AM (rNE21)

======

The counter to that is that early voting "cannibalizes" the day of election vote totals, which generally heavily favor Republicans and always have. If you're turning out people who will vote anyway, will that decrease the advantage from day of voting? Will Democrats do well enough on that day of vote to undo any progress Republicans had in the early vote?

This is where the central vote analysis question is right now, especially in a place like PA.

PA is seeing a D advantage of about 30% in early vote requests. In previous elections it was about 50% (especially 2022). How will that materialize in the end with day of voting?

Well, I'm not convinced that cannibalization is really a thing, especially across parties (that one will do it more than the other when both sides emphasize early voting), so it feels like a pipe dream from the left.

For example, FL 2022 saw R's heavily close the early gap from 20...and then had a massive blowout overall anyway.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally? As i said...it's actually an interesting thread overall, with lots of back and forth. There is a distinct difference in the electorate when Trump is on the ballot, and (unfortunately) it doesn't always transfer to downballot Republicans.

I think a good chunk of Trump voters DON'T vote in the midterms...just for Trump. That means they probably don't show up in "likely" voter screening questions. I guess we'll see in a few weeks, but I'm hoping for a surprise Trump surge in the final count.

I think NJ is going to see a very big swing to the right.

Not enough to make it even close to a battleground, but swinging it from a 16% Biden victory to maybe an 8% Kamala victory.

The registrations point to a 10% improvement of R performance relative to D performance. (It's not just a straight 10%, but relative to proportions of registrations and their changes over the last 4 years.)

I'm really beginning to think that the only good way to predict elections is voter registration. Voter registration contains A LOT of information, especially about turnout. If a party gains and another loses, well, that should tell you which side is more enthused.

That was the 2020 and 2022 argument that carried.

I thought it was dumb because, if you have "banked" the votes of those you know will vote, it allows you to focus on getting the low-propensity voters to the polls.
A harvest, if you will.

There are basically 3 election days to watch: With 1st day of early voting (25%), last day of early voting (25%) and Election day (30%).
That was from my very, very in-depth analysis of a race in TX years ago.
Meaning, a good campaign knows it won the race the Sunday before Election Day.
Your door knockers and phone bank workers would get daily updates of who to call on.
Trump and the RNC are realizing that.
Which the GOPe consultants hate, hate, hate. Because they can't send mass mailers to all voters for 3 weeks, hire phone bankers to call even already voted for 3 weeks, etc., etc. Really cuts into the commissions when you only have to spend 1/3 to target those who haven't voted yet.

The truth is that TPTB need them to be active by election day, and can't just have them out there as an anti-Trump political army, which is what they will be, but the fig leaf for the violence will be police brutality against blacks, as usual.

We'll see how desparate the D's and their army of affiliated organizations are by whether or not they allow this shooting to be the one that fires up the outrage machine.
3 weeks until the election. Just enough time to grow the unrest to a point where going to the polls in some places becomes a dicey proposition, making the claims that Trump voters stayed home on election day valid enough for government work.

This opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it, but it'll be interesting what happens in the next few days.

Managers are made, not born. This guy's skills need to be replicated throughout the RNC. Make him a manager, and teach him what he needs to know. If the guy truly turned PA around, on the other hand, he didn't do it by himself. He probably knows how to manage already.

1. Blue is the color of the heavens
2. The Ark of the Covenant was covered in blue cloth and she is the new Ark
3. Blue is the color of the tassels Jews were supposed to wear - holy color
4. Blue (ultramarine) was the most expensive color in ye olde days so it was fitting for the Queen of Heaven (eastern icons frequently clothed her in gold for the same reason)

275 Mary had to be pure and full of grace and "immaculate" as she was going to bear Jesus. She then as assumed to Heaven on her death without any corruption.

She crushes Satan at her heel. She feels the piercing of the sword of death knowing that Jesus would be painfully sacrificed and bear all of our sins.

Koran mistakenly mixes up her parents, St. Joachim and St. Anne with the parents of Miriam from Exodus from 1600 years before. One of many errors.
