9 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers!

Only slept about six hours last night, with a mild dream about going to the bank to find out why I had a $2.12 discrepancy in my statement vs. my check register. I wore a suit to the bank, and for some reason the streets outside were desert-sunny, as if I were in Albuquerque.

Re: KH calling the Weather Channel: Did that really happen, or is it just a meme? It seems to me almost everything Kammie-Ha-Ha does seems designed to sabotage her campaign . . . as if she, or her handlers, or both don't really think they can win, or even want to. Unlikely, given the Dems' will to power, but there it is.

20 And a short update on the weight loss goals.

As of yesterdayI have lost 35 pounds since the beginning of July.

21 Is not just that they're incompetent. They don't even know what competence looks like, only what the results of competence look like. Which means that the only way for them to advance in life is through nefarious means. Grifting, fraud, manipulation, smooth talk. So the ones we ever get to hear of got to where they are by getting really good at all that stuff. And being really good at all that stuff just means you're a terrible person who makes terrible decisions and does terrible things.

To mangle a phrase: power corrupts. Unearned power corrupts absolutely.

... unless you're doing intermittent fasting?

Posted by: Warai-otoko at October 10, 2024 04:48 AM (DDGz9)

28 I have a question for Wolfus when he comes back.

About 45? years ago I went on a hike with the cub scouts in New Orleans. It was somewhere on the West Bank, on the levee.... we walked along the levee where there was a refinery on the other side and then stopped to eat at a park with a lot of shade and baseball diamonds.

I can't figure out anything about the situation when I look on google maps, there's not a refinery where I think there should be downriver of the Big New Orleans bridge, and no parks that fit my memory.

I think of the walk, and that park, though, occasionally when I walk in a park near a baseball diamond.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at October 10, 2024 04:51 AM (DDGz9)

30 "unless you're doing intermittent fasting?"

Does 'not eating between 9:00PM and 7:00AM qualify as Intermittent Fasting'?

Other than that, it's the 4 mile walk every morning, and a constant awareness of carb intake that seems to be doing it.

But...I do miss bread.

Fresh hot french bread slathered in cold Wegman's Butter Boy French butter with sea salt crystals in it.

I think I would hurt someone for some of that.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at October 10, 2024 04:53 AM (a1415)

I have no clue. I was just making a terrible pun.

I do know that my "non-eating" window has been roughly 6PM to 9AM for just about my entire life, before there was even a word for doing that on purpose, and I've always been in decent enough shape despite eating like a taste-blind racoon with a tape worm outside of that window.

Data is not the plural of anecdote, but i figured i'd share.

Hey, TfSM,

I reread your post. You're talking about the part beyond the Naval Support station, where the levee trail emerges from it and runs on down toward the area they now call English Turn? In '79 I think the Tenneco Refinery was still a going concern on the East Bank, across from what you're talking about, and downriver from Chalmette Battlefield. Baseball diamond, I'm not sure about. But I didn't live on the WB until '88, so I don't know what they might have had. (cont.)

54 (cont., For TfSM) There's been new housing, homes I mean, developed just off the levee in recent years. In '79 there might have been more open fields and maybe even a baseball diamond.

57 TfSM: Do you remember seeing the Chalmette Monument, the miniature Washington Monument, sticking up on the East Bank? It's visible from the levee in the area you're talking about. As a kid when we played on the battlefield site, I used to stand on the river levee there and wonder what lay on the other side, i.e., the West Bank. Now I live there.

74 "Sure, [Elon]'s worth a quarter of a trillion dollars, but we've got him this time."

Next time you see someone cackling with glee at how Twitter/X's evaluation has gone from $44B to $8B or so, remember: Elon Musk was basically forced to pay the $44B, or lose however many billions in pulling out of the deal. He tried to get it restructured, because it probably wasn't even worth $44B. He tried to get a "bot" discount, to determine how many fake accounts were that were pumping up the evaluation.

But they didn't, and he had to spend $$$ rather than lose it. That was a LOT of money, and there's about no hope of earning it back. So? That's not business money at this point. It's F.U. money.

Twitter, now X, is Musk's plaything.

That he's now heavily into free speech, especially in contrast to how the Twits of before blatantly censored and attacked people they didn't like, is a fortunate thing. He could have been a Soros, funneling money and power into destroying things and extracting the blood and money from it (see the UK's "Black Wednesday"). But he builds things, makes things, and with Twitter/X, pushes the American Dream of freedom.
