300 Defendant pled out? Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at October 09, 2024 05:39 PM (D6PGr) ... Nope, full trial. Resulted in conviction. Judge to determine sentence. Short version is a aunt with some sort of schizophrenic disorder ends up with four other family members living with her in her apartment, and using the disabled aunts disability check to pay the rent. Aunt becomes increasingly difficult to live with, and health declines. Ultimately there is a 911 call and the police discover her emaciated and lying in her own filth, nearly dead, extensive bed sores. Doctor reports that her sulfate level which is apparently a marker for dehydration was so high he still cannot find a record in any medical journal of someone having a sulfate reading as high as this woman had. 205 (they don't do units in court). The niece living there was, according to her own mother's testimony at the time, the primary caregiver, and she had been trained and worked as a home health care worker for like 8 years. But she wasn't caring for the woman, wasn't trying to get her help, and had stuffed clothes under the door and lit candles to try to block the smell. Texas does not require motive for conviction so there was zero discussion of motive during the case. But it was super clear that the defendant was there, that she had been the caregiver, and that she had stopped providing care, and also did not get medical help for the victim, even though the defendant herself went to the ER twice in a pretty short period of time (weeks) leading up to calling 911 for the aunt. It's not a tsunami, a huge wall of water rushing in. So, if it's not a wall of water what does, say, a 15' storm surge mean? Posted by: Braenyard at October 09, 2024 05:56 PM (Qts0j) -- --- -- Storm surge is the build up of water due to wind at the surface. When all that water hits land it pushes the water on shore more like a bathtub filling up than a tsunami wave. If I understand correctly, the pressure inside a hurricane is much lower than the air pressure surrounding the hurricane, causing water to "push up" in the center of the storm. This water is then carried forward with the storm.

My employer (and many other linework contractors), are posted in S. Georgia. Duke energy or whichever utility the brokers fixed individual contractors with, will direct contractors after the fuckery has abated and bird dogs have assessed damage. Initial damage assessments are always half-assed, stupid, and just plain wrong. Generally, the utilities won't have any idea of the true scope or nature of damages until 4 days later - in large part because contractors start seeing all of the things the bird dogs never noticed.

One thing not oft observed about the good old days of .20c gasoline.
Remember in those days they had a squad of younger folks to come out and wipe the windows and check the oil, check tires, and generally leave it so the motorist didn't even have to get out of the car unless he wanted to. While this "gas monkey" job wasn't a living wage, it wasn't too bad, and was where most kids of a certain age were going to hang out anyhow. The stories I've read from "retired" kids who are all growed up now, talking about their job at the DX or Conoco or whatever, are absolutely hilarious. I'd have wanted to live in those times. Now they just force us to pump our own fuel, unless you want to pay for "full service", and there are no gasoline price wars. That was a huge expense that was cost shifted onto "consumers". Not counted in official monetary inflation figures. Posted by: Common Tater at October 09, 2024 06:35 PM (nvcsU) 172

From 5PM
Insider Paper@TheInsiderPaper 1h ALERT: Key messages for Hurricane Milton - NHC 1.A large area of destructive storm surge, with highest inundations of 10 ft or greater, is expected along a portion of the west-central coast of the Florida Peninsula. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by damaging waves. Water levels will rise rapidly as the eye approaches, and strong onshore winds on the backside of the hurricane will also cause a rapid rise in water as the center makes landfall. 2.Devastating hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the west coast of Florida within the Hurricane Warning area. Life-threatening hurricane-force winds, especially in gusts, are expected to spread inland across the peninsula and to portions of the Florida east coast within the Hurricane Warning area tonight and early Thursday. Residents should be prepared to take shelter in an interior room, away from windows, as the core of the hurricane moves across the central Florida Peninsula. Posted by: andycanuck (CEzQx) at October 09, 2024 06:40 PM (CEzQx) 193
3.The risk of strong tornadoes will continue into the evening hours across the southern and central portions of the Florida Peninsula. Be prepared to take immediate shelter in an interior room if a Tornado Warning is issued for your area.
4.Heavy rainfall across the Florida Peninsula through Thursday brings the risk of catastrophic and life-threatening flash and urban flooding along with moderate to major river flooding, especially in areas where coastal and inland flooding combine to increase the overall flood threat. Helicopter rotor wash can cause trouble. Without nefarious intent.
I was ... surprised ... at how high paperwork and other light articles can be strewn into the atmosphere, very quickly. Paper work from the division TOC, on a field exercise. Also, people have a natural aversion to occupying porta-potties in such conditions and will naturally un-ass the area. Posted by: Common Tater at October 09, 2024 06:46 PM (nvcsU) 221
Milton is just about broken. Coming ashore now with barely tropical storm winds. All the heavy convection has cleared on the southside and moved off the east coast.

Eh, the whole NG rotor wash thing is overblown in MVHO. I’ve seen plenty of crap like that from NG guys who don’t have a ton of experience or are just trying to do the right thing the wrong way.

"[T]hat rat DeSantis" is so incompetent that he has brought in out of state police officers to shoot post hurricane looters. Okay he didn't actually say "to shoot looters" but that is what I heard him say.

Something noted on Ryan Hall, Y'all's YouTube stream about the hurricane; the direction the tornados are spawning will shift/are shifting from South-to-North to South-to-Northwest as the storm spirals in.

Despite the growth and (self) californication, San Diego remains very nice, if you like ridiculously nice weather, the ocean, the desert, proximity to/safe distance from LA and it’s buffet of great food, and a few other things. Housing absurdly expensive of course.

Better and better news!
Milton still does NOT have a clear eye on the visible satellite image. Also, the three major areas of supercell thunderstorm activity have now moved east out of Florida and into the Atlantic. Bad news. Milton is jogging north more towards the heavier population area in Tampa. (We really want the eye to go make landfall south of Tampa.) I’ve been a lot of places. But San Diego is probably one of the nicest places on the planet. Perfect weather the even with the invasion and being Californication.

26 People of Earth, your attention, please. This is Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz of the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council. As you will no doubt be aware, the plans for development of the outlying regions of the Galaxy require the building of a hyperspatial express route through your star system. And regrettably, your planet is one of those scheduled for demolition. The process will take slightly less than two of your Earth minutes.
