Hurricane Milton Starts Hitting Florida as a Category 4 Hurricane

I hope all Floridians are seeking higher ground -- in Pennsylvania. And declaring themselves residents there, and voting early and often.

Hey, Democrats have established the "rule" that if you just claim you're not sure if you're staying or not, you're a resident. That's what they say for college students in swing states who really live permanently in their home states, right?

The National Weather Service warned residents to shelter-in-place as conditions deteriorated dramatically Wednesday afternoon and Hurricane Milton roared toward Florida's beleaguered west coast.
Tropical-storm force winds, flooding rains and tornadoes were spreading inland as the fierce hurricane was just hours from making landfall. Milton's sustained winds tapered off from 145 mph to 130 mph -- just high enough to remain a Category 4 hurricane 00 but the storm has grown in size, making its potential damage more widespread.

If we could just get that down to a Category 3...

Milton's tropical-storm-force winds now extend out to 250 miles.

"Historic, catastrophic, life-threatening -- all those words summarize the situation," said Austen Flannery, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Tampa.

The hurricane is spawning tornadoes. Seven so far.

Tornadic supercells -- dangerous, rotating thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes -- were beginning to sweep across the Florida peninsula, the update said. More than 12 million people were under tornado warnings, and the National Weather Service in Miami said on social media it had "up to 4 visually confirmed tornadoes today," with unofficial reports of others.

Tampa, with a metropolitan area that is home to over 3 million people, has not had a direct hit by a major hurricane in more than 100 years. Storm surge from Milton could drive water levels up to 12 feet above ground, the hurricane center said.

I hope that's alarmism based on projections from when Milton was Cat 5.

Hundreds of search and rescue personnel and 180 high-water vehicles have been embedded in likely storm impact sites, he said. Over 6,000 state National Guard members and 3,000 more from other states are at the ready, along with 50,000 linemen who will work on restoring power after the storm.

I saw it reported that that is the greatest pre-mustering of linesmen in history.

I hope that rat DeSantis finally took the phone call from Noted Hurricane and Border Expert Kamala Harris. Her wise counsel and zero executive ability (or responsibility) will be critical to the state weathering this storm.

By the way: FEMA is hoarding $73 billion in unspent money appropriated to pay for past disasters. They're still sitting on an $8 billion slush fund to pay for Hurricane Sandy, which struck... 12 years ago in 2012.

But Biden can't free up any of those funds, hoarded like Smaug with a government expense account.

Saying that all monies needed to pay off Chris Christie for soft-endorsing Obama in 2012 were already spent on disaster relief and that the remainder is just being hoarded by government bureaucrats who get off on having huge sums of money under their control is just more Dangerous Misinformation, Bigots!

Nope, full trial. Resulted in conviction. Judge to determine sentence.

Short version is a aunt with some sort of schizophrenic disorder ends up with four other family members living with her in her apartment, and using the disabled aunts disability check to pay the rent.

Aunt becomes increasingly difficult to live with, and health declines. Ultimately there is a 911 call and the police discover her emaciated and lying in her own filth, nearly dead, extensive bed sores. Doctor reports that her sulfate level which is apparently a marker for dehydration was so high he still cannot find a record in any medical journal of someone having a sulfate reading as high as this woman had. 205 (they don't do units in court).

The niece living there was, according to her own mother's testimony at the time, the primary caregiver, and she had been trained and worked as a home health care worker for like 8 years. But she wasn't caring for the woman, wasn't trying to get her help, and had stuffed clothes under the door and lit candles to try to block the smell.

The eyewall itself is currently sheared. If it fails to re-organize before landfall, then there is an excellent chance of Milton going down to Cat 2 before landfall.

If I understand correctly, the pressure inside a hurricane is much lower than the air pressure surrounding the hurricane, causing water to "push up" in the center of the storm. This water is then carried forward with the storm.

The water does not come in as a wall, but rather comes in continuously over a short period of time like a very! high tide.

Its a mound of water too wide to be thought of as a wave that the hurricane pushes/pulls along with it. So in effect the level of the water rises generally due to the surge then drains away.

Indeed. There is a second aunt who seems to also be on disability so maybe that's what they were planning to switch to.

Texas does not require motive for conviction so there was zero discussion of motive during the case. But it was super clear that the defendant was there, that she had been the caregiver, and that she had stopped providing care, and also did not get medical help for the victim, even though the defendant herself went to the ER twice in a pretty short period of time (weeks) leading up to calling 911 for the aunt.

Storm surge is the build up of water due to wind at the surface. When all that water hits land it pushes the water on shore more like a bathtub filling up than a tsunami wave.

Surge grows worse during high tide or when pushing into confined spaces like harbors or bays.

Local sea level goes up 15 feet in an hour or so. Large waves continue to ride the rising sea and crash onto everything on the new 'coastline' as the sea rises. The waves are what causes destruction of structures and force cars and debris and everything loose inland as sea level rises.

My state uses automobile registration (which is low) to charge delinquent state income tax because Washington has no state income tax, but has a high auto and license registration fee.
See, if someone were to be found to be an Oregon resident (as proven well enough by auto registration to an address in Oregon) and was to work in Washington, that person is on the hook for taxes, which makes those people clever enough to register a car with their kid, or second cousin, or the ex-wife's place in Multnomah county, suddenly due for 3 years back taxes, plus penalties, interest.

The low pressure in a hurricane is of an almost incomprehensible level for about 15 to 20 miles of coastline. Pretty much only that area.

Outside of that, not a big deal.

Do not ever be in that 15 to 20 miles of coastline.

Mostly. The forecast for the eye making landfall has shifted south from a direct hit on Tampa to south of Tampa and the level of storm surge has also shifted southward mirroring the leading edge of the counterclockwise spin of a hurricane.

Its not incomprehensible, they measure it.

If it were only pressure, the surge would be in the eye, where the pressure is lowest. If it is somewhere else then it has a component involving the wind.

It is more like a high tide, but caused by the low pressure zone in the center of the cyclone (which is caused by the wind,) and the wind. All that air is trying to get into the upper atmosphere so there is an updraft in the center of the storm, which is low pressure.

My Dad was a lineman, first for PG&E, then after Korea for ATT... retired from ATT as a Senior Engineer...

We had a downburst wind near a neighborhood where I lived, took out around 100 mature trees. It took a couple of weeks to get all of the downed trees removed. We were living on the third floor of an apartment building at the time. Rain was hitting the picture window so hard I hustled the kids into the hall, where we waited out the storm.

After years living in coastal zones (Navy Ret)... the only Coastal place I'd live is really close to the beach in San Diego... mainly because its still a lot like an old Beach Movie, with pretty girls, and people biking and roller skating on the sidewalks along the beach... plus, some good fun bars.

171 One thing not oft observed about the good old days of .20c gasoline.

Remember in those days they had a squad of younger folks to come out and wipe the windows and check the oil, check tires, and generally leave it so the motorist didn't even have to get out of the car unless he wanted to.

While this "gas monkey" job wasn't a living wage, it wasn't too bad, and was where most kids of a certain age were going to hang out anyhow. The stories I've read from "retired" kids who are all growed up now, talking about their job at the DX or Conoco or whatever, are absolutely hilarious. I'd have wanted to live in those times.

Now they just force us to pump our own fuel, unless you want to pay for "full service", and there are no gasoline price wars. That was a huge expense that was cost shifted onto "consumers". Not counted in official monetary inflation figures.

Sabi’s breeder had 3 English Bull Terriers. But we would definitely have to do a cat test. The cats rule here. I would absolutely do obedience training like with all my dogs, assuming the cat test was passed.

I miss my Doberman at times like these. You would have loved her. She was the best trained dog ever, she would lay down mid run hundreds of feet away with a hand signal. She was still goofy though, not a robot dog.
