I worked in a locked mental health ward for some time. Much of the art on the walls was very similar to this, although it was usually photographs. Quite a bit of analysis was done on the selection of photos: clear, and in-focus images, herbivores only, no clear eye contact from animals in the photo to the observer, outdoor, open spaces, often guidance for no lakes, ponds or oceans (small stream where the bottom was visible were fine), etc.
With those restrictions, a LOT of the photos were of sunset out west with a few distant horses lol. Posted by: Moron Analyst at October 10, 2024 09:43 AM (JCZqz) 75

Not a big fan of Benton's work. Most seems almost cartoonish in its exaggeration even when there is an emotional aspect.
HOWEVER, (clears throat to get peoples' attention) I like this one. The colors really do suggest autumn with the pasture no longer green and the fading reds of the leaves. There is a peaceful feeling as the horses gaze into the distance on the calm day, like the activity of the summer is over and things are winding down for the year. It's not highly profound but it is pleasant. Posted by: JTB at October 10, 2024 09:45 AM (yTvNw) 83

This style, known as American Regionalism, is the most purely American style of all, and its 3 main proponents were Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. Later on Russian communists stole the look and created Soviet art that was somewhat similar, but it was American first.

That is why it is utterly critical to Newsom that Harris loses to Trump this year. Gavin Newsom’s presidential ambitions—and they are significant—rest solely on a Harris defeat. Given his naked ambition and historical disdain for Harris, don’t be surprised to see Newsom torpedo his California rival in some below-the-radar manner to save his political future. We don’t call him Governor Hair Gel without reason. He gives new meaning to the definition of the word “slimy.”

Understood, but this painting dates from 1940-41, long after anyone with a brain understood who Stalin was, and long after they appropriated the style.
