Geoff Hinton and John Hopfield have won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work in AI. (Tech Crunch)

Hinton invented the technique of back propagation in 1978, and Hopfield invented the Hopfield network in 1982, which is (says Wikipedia) a form of recurrent neural network, or a spin glass system, that can serve as a content-addressable memory.

The key trick for winning the Nobel Prize continues to be not dying before the committee recognises your work. Hinton is 76; Hopfield is 91.

Speaking of vtubers, my pre-order of the Murasaki Shion Pop Up Parade figure from Amazon Japan (or rather, their marketplace) got cancelled, and now there aren't any. But it's still available to pre-order from Amazon US, and the shipping to Australia is dirt cheap (these things don't weigh very much), so I just put the order in again.

Amane Kanata is already shipping in Japan, so I ordered her and the Pop Up Parade Frieren figure, who can hide among all the Hololive girls.

(I'm not collecting Figmas or Nendoroids or the big expensive scale models, just Pop Up Parade. Though I did grab the Banpresto figure of Yozora Mel, since there won't be any more of those.)

I'm not sure that was a mountain lion either. The body was not as long, for one thing, and the ears were taller and sharper. Coyote, maybe?

I don't have time to link it right now, but someone on YouTube did a Gilligan's Island trailer in the manner of a horror movie (I'm sure you can find it if you want). It wasn't so much the content that amazed me as the actual technology itself. I would dearly love to know how to create something like that - or know someone who does it - in order to get a trailer for my Theda Bara book.

37 Thanks so much. He a good and very smart young man. I can't fault him. He is looking and he's also doing a part time job writing stuff, but many of the jobs in research come through a large university which he did not attend , and I expect the favor their own graduates first and probably DEI.

Dave Baron's "The Beast in the Garden" says otherwise (chronicles how mountain lions changed behavior after hunting bans enacted, etc.), but yes, it's hard to tell what that animal is that so casually strolled by her was. Hope it was a dog!
