Lot of claims today that Christopher Columbus has been genetically tested and was a Sephardic Jew.
I just saw this last week when I googled for Christopher Columbus. The conspiracy theory goes like this: Columbus's name was not, of course, Columbus. It was Christobal Colon.But why then do we call him Christopher Columbus? Supposedly, "Colon" is a name with "Jewish roots." That's vague and I don't know what that means. But anyway Spain, which financed his exploratory venture, was antisemitic and would expel all the Jews out of Spain just as Columbus reached the Bahamas, and I guess they wanted to hide the fact that they were financing a mission led by a Jew, so they called him "Christopher Columbus." Or so they say. I don't know if I believe this. Here's the Epoch Times on the genetic testing claims.

Columbus is a Latinization of Colon, It is what you did when you got rich and famous.
Colon is also considered a minor Catalan noble family apparently, and of course Valencia was the province in Spain that resisted the whole cleansing of muslims and Jews, and even had a few rebellions against Spanish rule. Of other myths of the area, Ruy Vivar, also known as El Cid was lord of Valencia until he was killed.
In Spain, previously, the argument was that Columbus was illegitimate from a Catalan noble and a Jewish mother, probably from Ibiza. It explained a number of things that a Genoese birth did not match.

Previous attempts to land in North America had been driven off, but the year before the Pilgrims landed, much of North America died from an epidemic (smallpox, IIRC). There's estimates that it may have been up to 97%.
Squanto chose to live with the Pilgrims because he was the only survivor out of all of the local villages. He had nowhere else to go.

I recommend reading Prescott's "History of the Conquest of Mexico," if you haven't already. It has a lot on Cortes' relations with the Tlaxcala and other tribes, and makes no bones about the fact that those guys repeatedly saved the conquistadors from total destruction.

Columbus couldn't get any traction among the crowned heads because he had this notion that the Earth was actually much smaller than was understood at the time (and the generally accepted figures were pretty accurate). This was the basis of his belief that a ship of the day would have the range to reach Asia. (In reality, no ship of that time could have crossed the roughly 14,000-mile span from Europe to Asia.)
Only Ferdinand and Isabella were willing to kick a few bucks at him and his crackpot scheme. They became very well-rewarded for it, but not because he turned out to be right.

I think germ theory didn't take hold as a real theory until the end of the 1800s. Before that it was all miasmas and humors, and bloodletting and leeches. But they did understand primitive vaccines, they could vaccinate people against smallpox in the 1700s. "Christopher" sounds rather Christian ... lineage isn't everything. Is it really logical to think only those of the Jewish lineage are "God's People"? imo even the old testament would say lineage was not the only thing ... it was faithfulness to God ... as in faithfulness to the scripture.
Is there currently one "Man of God" for Jews today? I should know that, but really don't. OT it seemed there was often one prophet, one man of God. In any case, Christians have one Father God, one Lord Jesus, our brother. There is no more Jew and Gentile.
I like that better than "chosen ones by bloodline" everyone else an "infidel". Christianist was an upgrade, cultures advance. just my viewpoint.

If there are any polls I don't know about them, but I expect we're way behind. The Dems outnumber Republicans 2 to 1.
I have to get a laugh-in a way-of all the events the Democrat Mayor (who's running again) is doing in the next two weeks. Sometime this week the Mayor is going to have an event with adults and children on crossing safety so that people will cross at the crosswalks. Perhaps it did not occur to the Mayor that we would not have this problem if there was not so much building and if people could read the signs in English. (sigh)

I think germ theory didn't take hold as a real theory until the end of the 1800s. Before that it was all miasmas and humors, and bloodletting and leeches. But they did understand primitive vaccines, they could vaccinate people against smallpox in the 1700s. Also recommended: Miguel Leon-Portilla, Vision de los vencidos which is translated (again) into "The Broken Spears". I say "again" because Leon-Portilla had translated these chronicles from Nahuatl into Spanish.
[Apparently it's also been translated into Otomi, which is what the Valley of Mexico spoke before they got conquered and colonised by the *checks notes* Nahua-speakers. Um.]

Technically, the Inquisition had no authority over Jews; however, it went after many conversos - Jews who had converted to Christianity - who were suspected of lapsing into Jewish practices.
